¹O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger

or discipline me in your wrath.

²Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint;

O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony.

³My soul is in anguish.

How long, O LORD, how long?

⁴Turn, O LORD, and deliver me;

save me because of your unfailing love.

⁵No one remembers you when he is dead.

Who praises you from the grave ^B?

⁶I am worn out from groaning;

all night long I flood my bed with weeping

and drench my couch with tears.

⁷My eyes grow weak with sorrow;

they fail because of all my foes.

⁸Away from me, all you who do evil,

for the LORD has heard my weeping.

⁹The LORD has heard my cry for mercy;

the LORD accepts my prayer.

¹⁰All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;

they will turn back in sudden disgrace. ¹

¹An oracle is within my heart

concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: ^A

There is no fear of God

before his eyes.

²For in his own eyes he flatters himself

too much to detect or hate his sin.

³The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;

he has ceased to be wise and to do good.

⁴Even on his bed he plots evil;

he commits himself to a sinful course

and does not reject what is wrong.

⁵Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the skies.

⁶Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,

your justice like the great deep.

O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.

⁷How priceless is your unfailing love!

Both high and low among men

find ^B refuge in the shadow of your wings.

⁸They feast on the abundance of your house;

you give them drink from your river of delights.

⁹For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light we see light.

¹⁰Continue your love to those who know you,

your righteousness to the upright in heart.

¹Shout with joy to God, all the earth!

²Sing the glory of his name;

make his praise glorious!

³Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds!

So great is your power

that your enemies cringe before you.

⁴All the earth bows down to you;

they sing praise to you,

they sing praise to your name."

⁵Come and see what God has done,

how awesome his works in man's behalf!

⁶He turned the sea into dry land,

they passed through the waters on foot--

come, let us rejoice in him.

⁷He rules forever by his power,

his eyes watch the nations--

we went through fire and water,

but you brought us to a place of abundance.

¹³I will come to your temple with burnt offerings

and fulfill my vows to you--

¹⁴vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke

when I was in trouble.

and an offering of rams;

I will offer bulls and goats.

¹⁶Come and listen, all you who fear God;

let me tell you what he has done for me.

¹⁷I cried out to him with my mouth;

his praise was on my tongue.

¹⁸If I had cherished sin in my heart,

the Lord would not have listened;

¹⁹but God has surely listened

and heard my voice in prayer.

²⁰Praise be to God,

who has not rejected my prayer

PSALMS: 96

¹Sing to the LORD a new song;

sing to the LORD, all the earth.

²Sing to the LORD, praise his name;

proclaim his salvation day after day.

³Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

⁴For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;

he is to be feared above all gods.

⁵For all the gods of the nations are idols,

but the LORD made the heavens.

⁶Splendor and majesty are before him;

strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

⁷Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

⁸Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

bring an offering and come into his courts.

⁹Worship the LORD in the splendor of his ^A holiness;

tremble before him, all the earth.

¹⁰Say among the nations, "The LORD reigns."

The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;

he will judge the peoples with equity.

¹¹Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;

let the sea resound, and all that is in it;

¹²let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.

Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy;

¹³they will sing before the LORD, for he comes,

he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

and the peoples in his truth. ⁶

PSALMS: 126

A song of ascents.

¹When the LORD brought back the captives to ^A Zion,

we were like men who dreamed. ^B

²Our mouths were filled with laughter,

our tongues with songs of joy.

Then it was said among the nations,

"The LORD has done great things for them."

³The LORD has done great things for us,

and we are filled with joy.

⁴Restore our fortunes, ^C O LORD,

like streams in the Negev.

⁵Those who sow in tears

will reap with songs of joy.

⁶He who goes out weeping,

carrying seed to sow,

will return with songs of joy,

carrying sheaves with him. ⁷

PROVERBS: 6

6 ¹ My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,

if you have struck hands in pledge for another,

²if you have been trapped by what you said,

ensnared by the words of your mouth,

³then do this, my son, to free yourself,

since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:

Go and humble yourself;

press your plea with your neighbor!

⁴Allow no sleep to your eyes,

no slumber to your eyelids.

⁵Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,

like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

⁶Go to the ant, you sluggard;

consider its ways and be wise!

⁷It has no commander,

no overseer or ruler,

⁸yet it stores its provisions in summer

and gathers its food at harvest.

⁹How long will you lie there, you sluggard?

When will you get up from your sleep?

¹⁰A little sleep, a little slumber,

a little folding of the hands to rest--

¹¹and poverty will come on you like a bandit

and scarcity like an armed man. ^A

¹²A scoundrel and villain,

who goes about with a corrupt mouth,

¹³ who winks with his eye,

signals with his feet

and motions with his fingers,

¹⁴ who plots evil with deceit in his heart--

he always stirs up dissension.

¹⁵Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; ⁸

he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.

¹⁶There are six things the LORD hates,

seven that are detestable to him:

¹⁷haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

hands that shed innocent blood,

¹⁸a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil,

¹⁹a false witness who pours out lies

and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

²⁰My son, keep your father's commands

and do not forsake your mother's teaching.

²¹Bind them upon your heart forever;

fasten them around your neck.

²²When you walk, they will guide you;

when you sleep, they will watch over you;

when you awake, they will speak to you.

²³For these commands are a lamp,

this teaching is a light,

and the corrections of discipline

are the way to life,

²⁴keeping you from the immoral woman,

from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.

²⁵Do not lust in your heart after her beauty

or let her captivate you with her eyes,

²⁶for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,

and the adulteress preys upon your very life.

²⁷Can a man scoop fire into his lap

without his clothes being burned?

²⁸Can a man walk on hot coals

without his feet being scorched?

²⁹So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; ⁹

no one who touches her will go unpunished.

³⁰Men do not despise a thief if he steals

to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.

³¹Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,

though it costs him all the wealth of his house.

³²But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment;

whoever does so destroys himself.

³³Blows and disgrace are his lot,

and his shame will never be wiped away;

³⁴for jealousy arouses a husband's fury,

and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.

³⁵He will not accept any compensation;

he will refuse the bribe, however great it is. ¹⁰

OLD TESTAMENT: DEUTERONOMY 9:1 - 10:22

9 ¹Hear, O Israel. You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.

²The people are strong and tall--Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: "Who can stand up against the Anakites?" ³But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you.

⁴After the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, "The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness." No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. ⁵It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, ¹¹ to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. ⁶Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

⁷Remember this and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the desert. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the LORD. ⁸At Horeb you aroused the LORD's wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. ⁹When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. ¹⁰The LORD gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the LORD proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.

¹¹At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. ¹²Then the LORD told me, "Go down from here at once, because ¹² your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made a cast idol for themselves."

¹³And the LORD said to me, "I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! ¹⁴ Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they."

¹⁸Then once again I fell prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in ¹³ the LORD's sight and so provoking him to anger. ¹⁹I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me. ²⁰And the LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. ²¹Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.

²²You also made the LORD angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.

²³And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, "Go up and take possession of the land I have given you." But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not trust him or obey him. ²⁴You have been rebellious against the LORD ever since I have known you.

²⁵I lay prostrate before the LORD those forty days and forty nights because the LORD had said he would destroy you. ²⁶I prayed to the LORD and said, "O Sovereign LORD, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought ¹⁴ out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin. ²⁸Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say, `Because the LORD was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the desert.' ²⁹But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm."

10 ¹At that time the LORD said to me, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden chest. ^A ²I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the chest."

³So I made the ark out of acacia wood and chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. ⁴The LORD wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the ¹⁵ Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And the LORD gave them to me. ⁵Then I came back down the mountain and put the tablets in the ark I had made, as the LORD commanded me, and they are there now.

⁶(The Israelites traveled from the wells of the Jaakanites to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest. ⁷From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water. ⁸At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister and to pronounce blessings in his name, as they still do today. ⁹That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as the LORD your God told them.)

¹⁰Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and nights, as I did the first time, and the LORD listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you.

¹¹At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. ¹²Then the LORD told me, "Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. ¹⁵So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. ^A ¹⁶When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the LORD your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD had commanded you. ¹⁷So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes. ¹⁶ ¹⁸Then once again I fell prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the LORD's sight and so provoking him to anger. ¹⁹I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. NEW TESTAMENT: LUKE 8:4 - 21

⁴While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: ⁵"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

⁶ Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. ⁷ Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. ⁸ Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown."

When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

⁹His disciples asked him what this parable meant. ¹⁰He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that,

"`though seeing, they may not see;

though hearing, they may not understand.' ^A

¹¹"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. ¹² Those along the ¹⁸ path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. ¹³ Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. ¹⁴ The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. ¹⁵ But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

¹⁶ "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. ¹⁷ For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. ¹⁸Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him." ¹⁹

¹⁹Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. ²⁰Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."

²¹He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice." ²⁰

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
