Hear,
O LORD, my righteous plea;
listen
to my cry.
Give
ear to my prayer--

does not rise from deceitful lips.

my vindication come from you;

your eyes see what is right.

you probe my heart and examine me at night,
though
you test me, you will find nothing;
I
have resolved that my mouth will not sin.

As
for the deeds of men--
by
the word of your lips
I
have kept myself
from
the ways of the violent.

My
steps have held to your paths;

I
call on you, O God, for you will answer me;

Give
thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

love endures forever.

the redeemed of the LORD say this--

he redeemed from the hand of the foe,

he gathered from the lands,
from
east and west, from north and south. A

Some
wandered in desert wastelands,
finding
no way to a city where they could settle.
5
They
were hungry and thirsty,
and
their lives ebbed away.

Then
they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he delivered them from their distress.

He
led them by a straight way
to
a city where they could settle.

Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love

became fools through their rebellious ways

suffered affliction because of their iniquities.

loathed all food
and
drew near the gates of death.

they cried to the LORD in their trouble,

he saved them from their distress.

sent forth his word and healed them;

rescued them from the grave.

Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and
his wonderful deeds for men.

them sacrifice thank offerings
and
tell of his works with songs of joy.

Others
went out on the sea in ships;
they
were merchants on the mighty waters.

saw the works of the LORD,

wonderful deeds in the deep.

he spoke and stirred up a tempest

lifted high the waves.

mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;

their peril their courage melted away.

reeled and staggered like drunken men;

turned rivers into a desert,

their numbers decreased, and they were humbled

oppression, calamity and sorrow;

who pours contempt on nobles

them wander in a trackless waste.

he lifted the needy out of their affliction

increased their families like flocks.

The
upright see and rejoice,
but
all the wicked shut their mouths.

Whoever
is wise, let him heed these things

By
the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when
we remembered Zion.

There
on the poplars
we
hung our harps,

for
there our captors asked us for songs,
our
tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they
said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"

How
can we sing the songs of the LORD
while
in a foreign land?
5
If
I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may
my right hand forget its skill.
6
May
my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if
I do not remember you,
if
I do not consider Jerusalem
my
highest joy.
7
Remember,
O LORD, what the Edomites did
on
the day Jerusalem fell.
"Tear
it down," they cried,
"tear
it down to its foundations!"

Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,

the LORD tests the heart.

wicked man listens to evil lips;
a
liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.

He
who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;
whoever
gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.

Children's
children are a crown to the aged,
and
parents are the pride of their children.

Arrogant

lips are unsuited to a fool--
how
much worse lying lips to a ruler!

bribe is a charm to the one who gives it;
wherever

They
are a nation without sense,
there
is no discernment in them.

If
only they were wise and would understand this
and
discern what their end will be!
30
How
could one man chase a thousand,
or
two put ten thousand to flight,
unless
their Rock had sold them,
unless
the LORD had given them up?
31
For
their rock is not like our Rock,
as
even our enemies concede.
32
Their
vine comes from the vine of Sodom
and
from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their
grapes are filled with poison,
and
their clusters with bitterness.
33
Their
wine is the venom of serpents,
the
deadly poison of cobras.

"Have
I not kept this in reserve
and
sealed it in my vaults?

is mine to avenge; I will repay.
In
due time their foot will slip;

day of disaster is near

LORD will judge his people 13

he sees their strength is gone

no one is left, slave or free.

will say: "Now where are their gods,

rock they took refuge in,

gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices

drank the wine of their drink offerings?
Let
them rise up to help you!

them give you shelter!

"See
now that I myself am He!
There
is no god besides me.
I
put to death and I bring to life,

have wounded and I will heal,
and
no one can deliver out of my hand.

I
lift my hand to heaven and declare:
As
surely as I live forever,

I sharpen my flashing sword

my hand grasps it in judgment,

will take vengeance on my adversaries

repay those who hate me.

declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to

are not just idle words for you--they are your life. By them you will
live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."

up into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo in Moab, across from Jericho,
and view Canaan, the land I am giving the Israelites as their own
possession.

There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be
gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor
and was gathered to his people.

This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of
the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin
and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.

Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance; you will not

"Be
dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,

like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet,
so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door
for him.
37
It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching
when he comes.
I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them
recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38
It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready,
even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.
39
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour
the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40
You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour
when you do not expect him."

Peter
asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to
everyone?"
42
The
Lord answered, "Who
then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge
of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
43
It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when
he returns.

I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his
possessions.
45
But
suppose the servant says to himself,
`My
master is taking a long time in coming,'
and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to
eat and drink and get drunk.

The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect
him and at an hour he is not aware of.
He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the
unbelievers.

"That
servant who knows his master's will and does not get 16
ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many
blows. 48
But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment
will be beaten with few blows.
From
everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the
one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

"I
have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already
kindled!
50
But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is
completed!
51
Do you think I came to bring peace on earth?
No,
I tell you, but division.
52
From now on there will be five in one family divided against each
other, three against two and two against three.
53
They will be divided, father against son and son against father,
mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law
against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

He said to the crowd:
"When
you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, `It's
going to rain,'
and
it does. 55
And when the south wind blows, you say,
`It's
going to be hot,'
and it is.

Hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky.
How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
57
"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
58
As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to
be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge,
and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you
into prison. 59
I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
