the peoples plot in vain?

The
kings of the earth take their stand
and
the rulers gather together
against
the LORD
and
against his Anointed One. B

"Let
us break their chains," they say,
"and
throw off their fetters."

The
One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the
Lord scoffs at them.
5
Then
he rebukes them in his anger
and
terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

"I
have installed my King C
on
Zion, my holy hill."

I
will proclaim the decree of the LORD:
He
said to me, "You
are my Son D;
today
I have become your Father.

of me,

I will make the nations your inheritance,

Blessed
is he
whose
transgressions are forgiven,
whose
sins are covered.

Blessed
is the man

sin the LORD does not count against him

in whose spirit is no deceit.

When
I kept silent,
my
bones wasted away
through
my groaning all day long.

For
day and night
your
hand was heavy upon me;
my
strength was sapped
as
in the heat of summer.

Then
I acknowledged my sin to you
and
did not cover up my iniquity.

said, "I will confess

transgressions to the LORD"--

My
soul finds rest in God alone;
my
salvation comes from him.

He
alone is my rock and my salvation;

is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

How
long will you assault a man?
Would
all of you throw him down--
this
leaning wall, this tottering fence?

They
fully intend to topple him
from
his lofty place;
they
take delight in lies.
With
their mouths they bless,
but
in their hearts they curse.

Find
rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my
hope comes from him.

He
alone is my rock and my salvation;

It
is good to praise the LORD
and
make music to your name, O Most High,

to
proclaim your love in the morning
and
your faithfulness at night,

to
the music of the ten-stringed lyre
and
the melody of the harp.
4
For
you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD;
I
sing for joy at the works of your hands.
5
How
great are your works, O LORD,
how
profound your thoughts!
6
The
senseless man does not know,
fools
do not understand,
7
that
though the wicked spring up like grass
and
all evildoers flourish,
they
will be forever destroyed.
8
But
you, O LORD, are exalted forever.

For
surely your enemies, O LORD,
surely
your enemies will perish;
all
evildoers will be scattered.

You
have exalted my horn A
like that of a wild ox;
fine
oils have been poured upon me.

eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;

A
song of ascents. Of David.

I
rejoiced with those who said to me,
"Let
us go to the house of the LORD."

Our
feet are standing
in
your gates, O Jerusalem.
3
Jerusalem
is built like a city
that
is closely compacted together.
4
That
is where the tribes go up,
the
tribes of the LORD,
to
praise the name of the LORD
according
to the statute given to Israel.
5
There
the thrones for judgment stand,
the
thrones of the house of David.
6
Pray
for the peace of Jerusalem:
"May
those who love you be secure.
7
May
there be peace within your walls
and
security within your citadels."
8
For
the sake of my brothers and friends,
I
will say, "Peace be within you."
9
For
the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I
will seek your prosperity. 8
PROVERBS:

1
My son, if you accept my words
and
store up my commands within you,
2
turning
your ear to wisdom
and
applying your heart to understanding,
3
and
if you call out for insight
and
cry aloud for understanding,
4
and
if you look for it as for silver
and
search for it as for hidden treasure,
5
then
you will understand the fear of the LORD
and
find the knowledge of God.
6
For
the LORD gives wisdom,
and
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7
He
holds victory in store for the upright,
he
is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8
for
he guards the course of the just
and
protects the way of his faithful ones.
9
Then
you will understand what is right and just
and
fair--every good path.
10
For
wisdom will enter your heart,
and
knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11
Discretion
will protect you,
and
understanding will guard you.
12
Wisdom
will save you from the ways of wicked men,
from
men whose words are perverse,
13
who
leave the straight paths
to
walk in dark ways,
14
who
delight in doing wrong
and
rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
15
whose
paths are crooked
and
who are devious in their ways.

It
will save you also from the adulteress,
from
the wayward wife with her seductive words 9

who
has left the partner of her youth
and
ignored the covenant she made before God. A

For
her house leads down to death
and
her paths to the spirits of the dead.

None
who go to her return
or
attain the paths of life.

Thus
you will walk in the ways of good men
and
keep to the paths of the righteous.

For
the upright will live in the land,
and
the blameless will remain in it;

but
the wicked will be cut off from the land,
and
the unfaithful will be torn from it. 10

TESTAMENT:
JUDGES 2:10 - 3:31

After
that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another
generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done
for Israel. 11
Then
the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.
12
They
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out
of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples
around them. They provoked the LORD to anger 13
because
they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14
In
his anger against Israel the LORD handed them over to raiders who
plundered them. He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they
were no longer able to resist. 15
Whenever
Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to
defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great
distress.
16
Then
the LORD raised up judges, C
who saved them out of the hands of these raiders.
17
Yet
they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to
other gods and worshiped them. Unlike their fathers, they quickly
turned from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of
obedience to the LORD's commands. 18
Whenever
the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved
them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived;
for the LORD had compassion on them as they groaned under those who
oppressed and afflicted them. 19
But
when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt
than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and
worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
20
Therefore
the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, 11
"Because
this nation has violated the covenant that I laid down for their
forefathers and has not listened to me,
21
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left
when he died.
22
I
will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way
of the LORD and walk in it as their forefathers did."
23
The
LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out
at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.

These
are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had
not experienced any of the wars in Canaan 2
(he
did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites
who had not had previous battle experience): 3
the
five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians,
and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal
Hermon to Lebo A
Hamath. 4
They
were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the
LORD's commands, which he had given their forefathers through Moses.
5
The
Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites,
Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 6
They
took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to
their sons, and served their gods.
7
The
Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD
their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
8
The
anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold them into the
hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, B
to whom the 12
Israelites were subject for eight years. 9
But
when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer,
Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. 10
The
Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge C
and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into
the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 11
So
the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
12
Once
again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because
they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over
Israel. 13
Getting
the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked
Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms. D
14
The
Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15
Again
the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a
deliverer--Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite.
The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16
Now
Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a half E
long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17
He
presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.
18
After
Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had
carried it. 19
At
the idols F
near Gilgal he himself turned back and said, "I have a secret
message for you, O king."
The
king said, "Quiet!" And all his attendants left him.
20
Ehud
then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of
his summer palace G
and said, "I have a message from God for you." As the king
rose from his seat,
21
Ehud
reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and
plunged it into 13
the king's belly. 22
Even
the handle sank in after the blade, which came out his back. Ehud did
not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. 23
Then
Ehud went out to the porch H;
he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.
24
After
he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room
locked. They said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner
room of the house." 25
They
waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the
doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw
their lord fallen to the floor, dead.
26
While
they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the idols and escaped to
Seirah.
27
When
he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim,
and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him
leading them.
28
"Follow
me," he ordered, "for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy,
into your hands." So they followed him down and, taking
possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab, they allowed
no one to cross over. 29
At
that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous
and strong; not a man escaped. 30
That
day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for
eighty years.
31
After
Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred
Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel. 14
NEW
TESTAMENT:
LUKE 22:14 - 34

When
the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15
And
he said to them, "I
have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in
the kingdom of God."
17
After
taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take
this and divide it among you.
18
For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until
the kingdom of God comes."
19
And
he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying,
"This
is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
20
In
the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This
cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21
But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the
table. 22
The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man
who betrays him."
23
They
began to question among themselves which of them it might be who
would do this.
24
Also
a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be
greatest.
25
Jesus
said to them, "The
kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise
authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you
should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who
serves. 27
For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who
serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as
one who serves.
28
You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29
And I confer on you a 15
kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30
so
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on
thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift youA
as wheat. 32
But
I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when
you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
33
But
he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to
death."
34
Jesus
answered, "I
tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three
times that you know me."
