OCTOBER 16

PSALMS: 16, 46, 76, 106, 136

PROVERBS: 16

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 11:1 - 13:4

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 5:1 - 26

PSALMS: 16

1 Preserve me, God, for in you do I take refuge.

2 My soul, you have said to the LORD,

"You are my Lord.

Apart from you I have no good thing."

3 As for the holy ones who are in the eretz,

They are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who give gifts to another god.

Their drink-offerings of blood I will not offer,

Nor take their names on my lips.

5 The LORD assigned my portion and my cup.

You made my lot secure.

6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places.

Yes, I have a good inheritance.

7  I will bless the LORD, who has given me counsel.

Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.

8 I have set the LORD always before me.

Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices.

My body shall also dwell in safety.

10 For you will not leave my soul in She'ol,

Neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

11 You will show me the path of life.

In your presence is fullness of joy.

In your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

PSALMS: 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore will we not be afraid, though the eretz changes,

Though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;

3 Though the waters of it roar and are troubled,

Though the mountains tremble with the swelling of it. Selah.

4 There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad,

The holy place of the tents of Ha`Elyon.

5 God is in the midst of her.

She shall not be moved.

God will help her at dawn.

6 The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved.

He uttered his voice, and the eretz melted.

7  The LORD of Hosts is with us.

The God of Ya`akov is our refuge. Selah.

8 Come, see the works of the LORD,

What desolations he has made in the eretz.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the eretz.

He breaks the bow, and cuts the spear apart.

He burns the chariots in the fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations.

I will be exalted in the eretz."

11 The LORD of Hosts is with us.

The God of Ya`akov is our refuge. Selah.

PSALMS: 76

1 In Yehudah, God is known.

His name is great in Yisra'el.

2 His tent is also in Shalem;

His dwelling-place in Tziyon.

3 There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow,

The shield, and the sword, and the weapons of war.

Selah.

4 Glorious are you, and excellent,

More than mountains of game.

5 Valiant men lie plundered,

They have slept their last sleep.

None of the men of war can lift their hands.

6 At your rebuke, God of Ya`akov,

Both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.

7 You, even you, are to be feared.

Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?

8 You pronounced judgment from heaven.

The eretz feared, and was silent,

9 When God arose to judgment,

To save all the afflicted ones of the eretz. Selah.

10 Surely the wrath of man praises you.

The survivors of your wrath are restrained.

11 Make vows to the LORD your God, and fulfill them!

Let all of his neighbors bring presents to him who is to be feared.

12 He will cut off the spirit of princes.

He is feared by the kings of the eretz.

PSALMS: 106

1 Praise the LORD!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,

For his loving kindness endures forever.

2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD,

Or fully declare all his praise?

3 Blessed are those who keep justice,

He who does righteousness at all times.

4 Remember me, LORD, with the favor that you show to your people.

Visit me with your yeshu`ah,

5 That I may see the prosperity of your chosen,

That I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,

That I may glory with your inheritance.

6 We have sinned with our fathers.

We have committed iniquity.

We have done wickedly.

7  Our fathers didn't understand your wonders in Mitzrayim.

They didn't remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses,

But were rebellious at the sea, even at the Sea of Suf.

8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake,

That he might make his mighty power known.

9 He rebuked the Sea of Suf also, and it was dried up;

So he led them through the depths, as through a desert.

10 He saved them from the hand of him who hated them,

And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

11 The waters covered their adversaries.

There was not one of them left.

12 Then they believed his words.

They sang his praise.

13 They soon forgot his works.

They didn't wait for his counsel,

14 But gave in to craving in the desert,

And tested God in the wasteland.

15 He gave them their request,

But sent leanness into their soul.

16 They envied Moshe also in the camp,

And Aharon, the LORD's holy one.

17 The eretz opened and swallowed up Datan,

And covered the company of Aviram.

18 A fire was kindled in their company.

The flame burned up the wicked.

19 They made a calf in Horev,

And worshiped a molten image.

20 Thus they exchanged their glory

For an image of a bull that eats grass.

21 They forgot God, their Savior,

Who had done great things in Mitzrayim,

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,

And awesome things by the Sea of Suf.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them,

Had Moshe, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach,

To turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them.

24 Yes, they despised the pleasant land.

They didn't believe his word,

25 But murmured in their tents,

And didn't listen to the voice of the LORD.

26 Therefore he swore to them

That he would overthrow them in the wilderness,

27 That he would overthrow their seed among the nations,

And scatter them in the lands.

28 They joined themselves also to Ba`al-Pe`or,

And ate the sacrifices of the dead.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds.

The plague broke in on them.

30 Then Pinechas stood up, and executed judgment,

So the plague was stopped.

31 That was credited to him for righteousness,

To all generations forevermore.

32 They angered him also at the waters of Merivah,

So that Moshe was troubled for their sakes;

33 Because they were rebellious against his spirit,

He spoke rashly with his lips.

34 They didn't destroy the peoples,

As the LORD commanded them,

35 But mixed themselves with the nations,

Learned their works.

36 They served their idols,

Which became a snare to them.

37  Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.

38 They shed innocent blood,

Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters,

Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Kana`an.

The land was polluted with blood.

39 Thus were they defiled with their works,

And prostituted themselves in their deeds.

40 Therefore the wrath of the LORD was kindled against his people.

He abhorred his inheritance.

41 He gave them into the hand of the nations.

Those who hated them ruled over them.

42 Their enemies also oppressed them.

They were brought into subjection under their hand.

43 Many times he delivered them,

But they were rebellious in their counsel,

And were brought low in their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless he regarded their distress,

When he heard their cry.

45 He remembered for them his covenant,

And repented according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.

46 He made them also to be pitied

By all those who carried them captive.

47 Save us, LORD, our God,

Gather us from among the nations,

To give thanks to your holy name,

To triumph in your praise!

48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Yisra'el,

From everlasting even to everlasting!

Let all the people say, ‘

"Amein.

" Praise the LORD!

PSALMS: 136

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

For his loving kindness endures forever.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods;

For his loving kindness endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

4 To him who alone does great wonders;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

5 To him who by understanding made the heavens;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

6 To him who spread out the eretz above the waters;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

7  To him who made the great lights;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

8 The sun to rule by day;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

9 The moon and stars to rule by night;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

10 To him who struck down the Mitzrian firstborn;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

11 And brought out Yisra'el from among them;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

12 With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

13 To him who divided the Sea of Suf apart;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

14 Made Yisra'el to pass through the midst of it;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

15 But overthrew Par`oh and his host in the Sea of Suf;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

16 To him who led his people through the wilderness;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

17 To him who struck great kings;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

18 And killed mighty kings;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

19 Sichon king of the Amori;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

20 `Og king of Bashan;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

21 And gave their land as an inheritance;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

22 Even a heritage to Yisra'el his servant;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

23 Who remembered us in our low estate;

For his loving kindness endures forever;

24 And has delivered us from our adversaries;

For his loving kindness endures forever:

25 Who gives food to every creature;

For his loving kindness endures forever.

26 Oh give thanks to the God of heaven;

For his loving kindness endures forever.

PROVERBS: 16

1 The plans of the heart belong to man,

But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes;

But the LORD weighs the motives.

3 Commit your deeds to the LORD,

And your plans shall succeed.

4 The LORD has made everything for its own end --

Yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.

5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD:

They shall assuredly not be unpunished.

6 By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for.

By the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

7 When a man's ways please the LORD,

He makes even his enemies to be at shalom with him.

8 Better is a little with righteousness,

Than great revenues with injustice.

9 A man's heart plans his course,

But the LORD directs his steps.

10 Inspired judgments are on the lips of the king.

He shall not betray his mouth.

11 Honest balances and scales are the LORD's;

All the weights in the bag are his work.

12 It is an abomination for kings to do wrong,

For the throne is established by righteousness.

13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings.

They value one who speaks the truth.

14 The king's wrath is a messenger of death,

But a wise man will pacify it.

15 In the light of the king's face is life.

His favor is like a cloud of the spring rain.

16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold!

Yes, to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

17  The highway of the upright is to depart from evil.

He who keeps his way preserves his soul.

18 Pride goes before destruction,

A haughty spirit before a fall.

19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor,

Than to divide the plunder with the proud.

20 He who gives heed to the Word finds prosperity.

Whoever trusts in the LORD is blessed.

21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent.

Pleasantness of the lips promotes instruction.

22 Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it,

But the punishment of fools is their folly.

23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth,

And adds learning to his lips.

24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb,

Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

25 There is a way which seems right to a man,

But in the end it leads to death.

26 The appetite of the laboring man labors for him;

For his mouth urges him on.

27 A worthless man devises mischief.

His speech is like a scorching fire.

28 A perverse man stirs up strife.

A whisperer separates close friends.

29 A man of violence entices his neighbor,

And leads him in a way that is not good.

30 One who winks his eyes to plot perversities,

One who compresses his lips, is bent on evil.

31 Gray hair is a crown of glory.

It is attained by a life of righteousness.

32 One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty;

One who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city.

33 The lot is cast into the lap,

But its every decision is from the LORD.

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 11:1 - 13:4

11:1 The whole eretz was of one language and of one speech. 2 It happened, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shin`ar; and they lived there. 3 They said one to another, "Come, let's make brick, and burn them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 They said, "Come, let's build us a city, and a tower, whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole eretz." 5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. 6 The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. 7 Come, let's go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the eretz. They stopped building the city. 9Therefore the name of it was called Bavel, because the LORD confused the language of all the eretz, there. From there, the LORD scattered them abroad on the surface of all the eretz. 10 This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpakhshad two years after the flood. 11 Shem lived after he became the father of Arpakhshad five hundred years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 12Arpakhshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelach. 13 Arpakhshad lived after he became the father of Shelach four hundred three years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 14 Shelach lived thirty years, and became the father of `Ever: 15 and Shelach lived after he became the father of `Ever four hundred three years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 16 `Ever lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg. 17 `Ever lived after he became the father of Peleg four hundred thirty years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 18 Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Re`u. 19 Peleg lived after he became the father of Re`u two hundred nine years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 20 Re`u lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug. 21 Re`u lived after he became the father of Serug two hundred seven years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 22 Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nachor. 23 Serug lived after he became the father of Nachor two hundred years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 24 Nachor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terach. 25 Nachor lived after he became the father of Terach one hundred nineteen years, and became the father of sons and daughters. 26 Terach lived seventy years, and became the father of Avram, Nachor, and Haran. 27 Now this is the history of the generations of Terach. Terach became the father of Avram, Nachor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot. 28 Haran died before his father Terach in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Kasdim. 29 Avram and Nachor took wives. The name of Avram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nachor's wife, Milkah, the daughter of Haran who was also the father of Yiskah. 30 Sarai was barren. She had no child. 31 Terach took Avram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Avram's wife. They went forth from Ur of the Kasdim, to go into the land of Kana`an. They came to Haran, and lived there. 32 The days of Terach were two hundred five years. Terach died in Haran.

12:1 Now the LORD said to Avram, "Get out of your country, and from your relatives, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you, and make your name great. You will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you. In you will all of the families of the eretz be blessed." 4 So Avram went, as the LORD had spoken to him. Lot went with him. Avram was seventy-five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5 Avram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother's son, all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls who they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Kana`an. Into the land of Kana`an they came. 6 Avram passed through the land to the place of Shekhem, to the oak of Moreh. The Kana`ani was then in the land. 7 The LORD appeared to Avram, and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." He built an altar there to the LORD, who appeared to him. 8 He left from there to the mountain on the east of Beit-El, and pitched his tent, having Beit-El on the west, and `Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and called on the name of the LORD. 9 Avram journeyed, going on still toward the South. 10 There was a famine in the land. Avram went down into Mitzrayim to sojourn there, for the famine was sore in the land.11 It happened, when he was come near to enter into Mitzrayim, that he said to Sarai his wife, "See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look on. 12 It will happen, when the Mitzrim will see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife.' They will kill me, but they will save you alive. 13 Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you." 14 It happened that when Avram had come into Mitzrayim, the Mitzrim saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Par`oh saw her, and praised her to Par`oh; and the woman was taken into Par`oh's house. 16 He dealt well with Avram for her sake. He had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and she-asses, and camels. 17  The LORD plagued Par`oh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Avram's wife. 18 Par`oh called Avram, and said, "What is this that you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way."20 Par`oh gave men charge concerning him: and they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had.

13:1 Avram went up out of Mitzrayim: he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South. 2 Avram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3 He went on his journeys from the South even to Beit-El, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beit-El and `Ai, 4 to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Avram called on the name of the LORD.

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 5:1 - 26

5:1 Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto a mountain. When he had sat down, his talmidim came to him.

2 He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the humble, For they shall inherit the eretz.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, For they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13 "You are the salt of the eretz, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill can't be hidden.

15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.

16 Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 "Don't think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill.

18 For most assuredly, I tell you, until heaven and eretz pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.

19 Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least mitzvot, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Sofrim and Perushim, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21 "You have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not murder;' and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'

22 But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Reyka!' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'Shoteh!' shall be in danger of the fire of Gehinnom.

23 "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,

24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

26 Most assuredly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last peruta.

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
