1 How
long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How
long will you hide your face from me?
2 How
long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and
every day have sorrow in my heart?
How
long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look
on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give
light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4 my
enemy will say, "I have overcome him,"
and
my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But
I trust in your unfailing love;
my
heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I
will sing to the LORD,
for
he has been good to me. 1

43
1 Vindicate A me,
O God,
and
plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
rescue
me from deceitful and wicked men.
2 You
are God my stronghold.
Why
have you rejected me?
Why
must I go about mourning,
oppressed
by the enemy?
3 Send
forth your light and your truth,
let
them guide me;
let
them bring me to your holy mountain,
to
the place where you dwell.
4 Then
will I go to the altar of God,
to
God, my joy and my delight.

73
A
psalm of Asaph.
1 Surely
God is good to Israel,
to
those who are pure in heart.
2 But
as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I
had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For
I envied the arrogant
when
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 They
have no struggles;
their
bodies are healthy and strong. A
5 They
are free from the burdens common to man;
they
are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore
pride is their necklace;
they
clothe themselves with violence.
7 From
their callous hearts comes iniquity B;
the
evil conceits of their minds know no limits.
8 They
scoff, and speak with malice;
in
their arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 Their
mouths lay claim to heaven,
and
their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore
their people turn to them
and
drink up waters in abundance. C
11 They
say, "How can God know?
Does
the Most High have knowledge?"
12 This
is what the wicked are like--
always
carefree, they increase in wealth. 3

13 Surely
in vain have I kept my heart pure;
in
vain have I washed my hands in innocence.
14 All
day long I have been plagued;
I
have been punished every morning.
15 If
I had said, "I will speak thus,"
I
would have betrayed your children.
16 When
I tried to understand all this,
it
was oppressive to me
17 till
I entered the sanctuary of God;
then
I understood their final destiny.
18 Surely
you place them on slippery ground;
you
cast them down to ruin.
19 How
suddenly are they destroyed,
completely
swept away by terrors!
20 As
a dream when one awakes,
so
when you arise, O Lord,
you
will despise them as fantasies.
21 When
my heart was grieved
and
my spirit embittered,
22 I
was senseless and ignorant;
I
was a brute beast before you.
23 Yet
I am always with you;
you
hold me by my right hand.
24 You
guide me with your counsel,
and
afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom
have I in heaven but you?
And
earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My
flesh and my heart may fail,
but
God is the strength of my heart
and
my portion forever. 4

who are far from you will perish;

destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

as for me, it is good to be near God.

103
Of
David.
1 Praise
the LORD, O my soul;
all
my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise
the LORD, O my soul,
and
forget not all his benefits--
3 who
forgives all your sins
and
heals all your diseases,
4 who
redeems your life from the pit
and
crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who
satisfies your desires with good things
so
that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The
LORD works righteousness
and
justice for all the oppressed.
7 He
made known his ways to Moses,
his
deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The
LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow
to anger, abounding in love.
9 He
will not always accuse,
nor
will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he
does not treat us as our sins deserve
or
repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For
as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so
great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as
far as the east is from the west,
so
far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13 As
a father has compassion on his children,
so
the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for
he knows how we are formed, 6
he
remembers that we are dust.
15 As
for man, his days are like grass,
he
flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 the
wind blows over it and it is gone,
and
its place remembers it no more.
17 But
from everlasting to everlasting
the
LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and
his righteousness with their children's children--
18 with
those who keep his covenant
and
remember to obey his precepts.
19 The
LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and
his kingdom rules over all.
20 Praise
the LORD, you his angels,
you
mighty ones who do his bidding,
who
obey his word.
21 Praise
the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you
his servants who do his will.
22 Praise
the LORD, all his works
everywhere
in his dominion.

133
A
song of ascents. Of David.
1 How
good and pleasant it is
when
brothers live together in unity!
2 It
is like precious oil poured on the head,
running
down on the beard,
running
down on Aaron's beard,
down
upon the collar of his robes.
3 It
is as if the dew of Hermon
were
falling on Mount Zion.
For
there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even
life forevermore. 8
PROVERBS:
13
13 1 A
wise son heeds his father's instruction,
but
a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
2 From
the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things,
but
the unfaithful have a craving for violence.
3 He
who guards his lips guards his life,
but
he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
4 The
sluggard craves and gets nothing,
but
the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
5 The
righteous hate what is false,
but
the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
6 Righteousness
guards the man of integrity,
but
wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7 One
man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another
pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
8 A
man's riches may ransom his life,
but
a poor man hears no threat.
9 The
light of the righteous shines brightly,
but
the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
10 Pride
only breeds quarrels,
but
wisdom is found in those who take advice.
11 Dishonest
money dwindles away,
but
he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. 9
12 Hope
deferred makes the heart sick,
but
a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
13 He
who scorns instruction will pay for it,
but
he who respects a command is rewarded.
14 The
teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning
a man from the snares of death.
15 Good
understanding wins favor,
but
the way of the unfaithful is hard. A
16 Every
prudent man acts out of knowledge,
but
a fool exposes his folly.
17 A
wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but
a trustworthy envoy brings healing.
18 He
who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but
whoever heeds correction is honored.
19 A
longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but
fools detest turning from evil.
20 He
who walks with the wise grows wise,
but
a companion of fools suffers harm.
21 Misfortune
pursues the sinner,
but
prosperity is the reward of the righteous.
22 A
good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children,
but
a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. 10
23 A
poor man's field may produce abundant food,
but
injustice sweeps it away.
24 He
who spares the rod hates his son,
but
he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
25 The
righteous eat to their hearts' content,
but
the stomach of the wicked goes hungry. 11

TESTAMENT:
GENESIS 3:1 - 4:26
31 Now
the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God
had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, `You
must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The
woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in
the garden, 3 but
God did say, `You
must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden,
and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
4 "You
will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For
God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you
will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 When
the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and
pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took
some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her,
and he ate it. 7 Then
the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were
naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for
themselves.
8 Then
the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was
walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the
LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But
the LORD God called to the man, "Where
are you?"
10 He
answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I
was naked; so I hid."
11 And
he said, "Who
told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I
commanded you not to eat from?"
12 The
man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some
fruit from the tree, and I ate it."
13 Then
the LORD God said to the woman, "What
is this you have done?"
The
woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
14 So
the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because
you have done this,
"Cursed
are you above all the livestock
and
all the wild animals!
You
will crawl on your belly
and
you will eat dust
all
the days of your life.
15 And
I will put enmity
between
you and the woman,
and
between your offspring A and
hers; 12
he
will crush B your
head,
and
you will strike his heel."
16 To
the woman he said,
"I
will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with
pain you will give birth to children.
Your
desire will be for your husband,
and
he will rule over you."
17 To
Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from
the tree about which I commanded you, `You must not eat of it,'
"Cursed
is the ground because of you;
through
painful toil you will eat of it
all
the days of your life. 18 It
will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and
you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By
the sweat of your brow
you
will eat your food
until
you return to the ground,
since
from it you were taken;
for
dust you are
and
to dust you will return."
20 Adam C named
his wife Eve, D because
she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The
LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed
them.
22 And
the LORD God said, "The
man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not
be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life
and eat, and live forever." 23 So
the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground
from which he had been taken. 24 After
he drove the man out, he placed on the east side E of
the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and
forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
4 1 Adam A lay
with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to
Cain. B She
said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth C a
man." 2 Later
she gave birth to his brother Abel. 13
Now
Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In
the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an
offering to the LORD. 4 But
Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.
The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but
on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then
the LORD said to Cain, "Why
are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If
you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do
what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you,
but you must master it."
8 Now
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the
field." D And
while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and
killed him.
9 Then
the LORD said to Cain, "Where is
your brother Abel?"
"I
don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
10 The
LORD said, "What
have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the
ground. 11 Now
you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its
mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When
you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You
will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13 Cain
said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can
bear. 14 Today
you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your
presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever
finds me will kill me."
15 But
the LORD said to him, "Not
so E;
if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over."
Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would
kill him. 16 So
Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of
Nod, F east
of Eden.
17 Cain
lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.
Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son
Enoch. 18 To
Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and
Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father
of Lamech.
19 Lamech
married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah
gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and
raise livestock. 21 His
brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp
and flute. 22 Zillah
also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out
of G bronze
and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech
said to his wives,
"Adah
and Zillah, listen to me;
wives
of Lamech, hear my words.
I
have killed H a
man for wounding me,
a
young man for injuring me. 24 If
Cain is avenged seven times, 14
then
Lamech seventy-seven times."
25 Adam
lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him
Seth, I saying,
"God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain
killed him."
26 Seth
also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At
that time men began to call on J the
name of the LORD. 15
NEW
TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 2:13 - 3:6
13 When
they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.
"Get
up,"
he said, "take
the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell
you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
14 So
he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left
for Egypt,
15 where
he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the
Lord had said through the prophet: "Out
of Egypt I called my son."F
16 When
Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was
furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its
vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the
time he had learned from the Magi.17 Then
what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 "A
voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping
and great mourning,
Rachel
weeping for her children
and
refusing to be comforted,
because
they are no more."G
19 After
Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in
Egypt
20 and
said, "Get
up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for
those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
21 So
he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of
Israel. 22 But
when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his
father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a
dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and
he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what
was said through the prophets: "He
will be called a Nazarene."
31 In
those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of
Judea 2 and
saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." 3 This
is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
"A
voice of one calling in the desert,
`Prepare
the way for the Lord,
make
straight paths for him.'"A 16
4 John's
clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around
his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People
went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of
the Jordan. 6 Confessing
their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.17

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
