Why,
A
O LORD, do you stand far off?
Why
do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2
In
his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who
are caught in the schemes he devises.
3
He
boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he
blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4
In
his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in
all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5
His
ways are always prosperous;
he
is haughty and your laws are far from him;
he
sneers at all his enemies.
6
He
says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;
I'll
always be happy and never have trouble."
7
His
mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;
trouble
and evil are under his tongue.
8
He
lies in wait near the villages;
from
ambush he murders the innocent,
watching
in secret for his victims.
9
He
lies in wait like a lion in cover;
he
lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he
catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

His
victims are crushed, they collapse;
they
fall under his strength.

He
says to himself, "God has forgotten;
he
covers his face and never sees." 1

Arise,
LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.

not forget the helpless.

Why
does the wicked man revile God?

does he say to himself,
"He
won't call me to account"?

you, O God, do see trouble and grief;
you
consider it to take it in hand.
The
victim commits himself to you;

are the helper of the fatherless.

Break
the arm of the wicked and evil man;
call
him to account for his wickedness
that
would not be found out.

I
waited patiently for the LORD;
he
turned to me and heard my cry.

He
lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out
of the mud and mire;
he
set my feet on a rock
and
gave me a firm place to stand.

He
put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
Many
will see and fear
and
put their trust in the LORD.
4
Blessed
is the man
who
makes the LORD his trust,
who
does not look to the proud,
to
those who turn aside to false gods. A

Many,
O LORD my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The
things you planned for us
no
one can recount to you;
were
I to speak and tell of them,
they
would be too many to declare.

Sacrifice
and offering you did not desire,

In
the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and
visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. He wrote
down the substance of his dream.
2
Daniel
said: "In
my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds
of heaven churning up the great sea.
3
Four
great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.
4
"The
first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle.
I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the
ground so that it stood on two feet like a man, and the heart of a
man was given to it.
5
"And
there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear.
It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its
mouth between its teeth.
It was told,
`Get
up and eat your fill of flesh!'
6
"After
that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that
looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those
of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to
rule.
7
"After
that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a
fourth beast--terrifying and frightening and very powerful.
It
had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and
trampled underfoot whatever was left.
It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
8
"While
I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a
little one, which came up among them;
and three of the first horns were uprooted before it.
This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke
boastfully.
9
"As
I looked,
"thrones
were set in place,
and
the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His
clothing was as white as snow;
the
hair of his head was white like wool.
His
throne was flaming with fire,
and
its wheels were all ablaze.
10
A
river of fire was flowing,
coming
out from before him.
Thousands
upon thousands attended him;
ten
thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
12
The
court was seated,
and
the books were opened.
11
"Then
I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was
speaking.
I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and
thrown into the blazing fire.
12
(The
other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed
to live for a period of time.)
13
"In
my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son
of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.
He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.
14
He
was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations
and men of every language worshiped him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and
his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
15
"I,
Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through
my mind disturbed me.
16
I
approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning
of all this.
"So
he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:
17
`The
four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.
18
But
the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess
it forever--yes, for ever and ever.'
19
"Then
I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast, which was
different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron
teeth and bronze claws--the beast that crushed and devoured its
victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left.
20
I
also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the
other horn that came up, before which three of them fell--the horn
that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a
mouth that spoke boastfully.
21
As
I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and defeating
them,
22
until
the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the
saints of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the
kingdom.
23
"He
gave me this explanation:
`The
fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth.
It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the
whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.
24
The
ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them
another king will arise, different from the earlier ones;
he will subdue three kings.
25
He
will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to
change the set times and the laws.
The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a
time.
A
26
"`But
the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely
destroyed forever.
27
Then
the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole
heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most
High.
His kingdom will be an everlasting 13
kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.'
28
"This
is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my
thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself."

NEW
TESTAMENT:
2 PETER 3:1 - 18

1
Dear
friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of
them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2
I
want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets
and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3
First
of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4
They
will say, "Where is this `coming' he promised? Ever since our
fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of
creation." 5
But
they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens
existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6
By
these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7
By
the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,
being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8
But
do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is
like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9
The
Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.
He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to
come to repentance.
10
But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will
disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and
the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. A
11
Since
everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought
you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12
as
you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. B
That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and
the elements will melt in the heat. 13
But
in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven
and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
14
So
then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every
effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15
Bear
in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear
brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16
He
writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these
matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand,
which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other
Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17
Therefore,
dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that
you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from
your secure position. 18
But
grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. 15
