ear to my words, O LORD,
consider
my sighing.

Listen
to my cry for help,
my
King and my God,
for
to you I pray.

In
the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice;
in
the morning I lay my requests before you
and
wait in expectation.
4
You
are not a God who takes pleasure in evil;
with
you the wicked cannot dwell.
5
The
arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
you
hate all who do wrong.
6
You
destroy those who tell lies;
bloodthirsty
and deceitful men
the
LORD abhors.
7
But
I, by your great mercy,
will
come into your house;
in
reverence will I bow down
toward
your holy temple.

Lead
me, O LORD, in your righteousness

of my enemies--

Not

1
Contend,
O LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight
against those who fight against me.

Take
up shield and buckler;
arise
and come to my aid.

Brandish
spear and javelin A
against
those who pursue me.
Say
to my soul,
"I
am your salvation."
4
May
those who seek my life
be
disgraced and put to shame;
may
those who plot my ruin
be
turned back in dismay.
5
May
they be like chaff before the wind,
with
the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6
may
their path be dark and slippery,
with
the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7
Since
they hid their net for me without cause
and
without cause dug a pit for me,

may
ruin overtake them by surprise--
may
the net they hid entangle them,
may
they fall into the pit, to their ruin.

Then
my soul will rejoice in the LORD
and
delight in his salvation.

My
whole being will exclaim,
"Who
is like you, O LORD?
You
rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the
poor and needy from those who rob them." 3

Ruthless
witnesses come forward;
they
question me on things I know nothing about.
12
They
repay me evil for good
and
leave my soul forlorn.
13
Yet
when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and
humbled myself with fasting.
When
my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14
I
went about mourning
as
though for my friend or brother.
I
bowed my head in grief
as
though weeping for my mother.
15
But
when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
attackers
gathered against me when I was unaware.
They
slandered me without ceasing.
16
Like
the ungodly they maliciously mocked B;
they
gnashed their teeth at me.
17
O
Lord, how long will you look on?
Rescue
my life from their ravages,
my
precious life from these lions.
18
I
will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among
throngs of people I will praise you.
19
Let
not those gloat over me
who
are my enemies without cause;
let
not those who hate me without reason
maliciously
wink the eye.
20
They
do not speak peaceably,
but
devise false accusations
against
those who live quietly in the land.
21
They
gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha!
With
our own eyes we have seen it." 4
22
O
LORD, you have seen this; be not silent.
Do
not be far from me, O Lord.
23
Awake,
and rise to my defense!
Contend
for me, my God and Lord.
24
Vindicate
me in your righteousness, O LORD my God;
do
not let them gloat over me.

not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!"
or
say, "We have swallowed him up."

May
all who gloat over my distress
be
put to shame and confusion;

all who exalt themselves over me

Praise
awaits A
you, O God, in Zion;
to
you our vows will be fulfilled.
2
O
you who hear prayer,
to
you all men will come.
3
When
we were overwhelmed by sins,
you
forgave B
our transgressions.
4
Blessed
are those you choose
and
bring near to live in your courts!
We
are filled with the good things of your house,
of
your holy temple.
5
You
answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
O
God our Savior,
the
hope of all the ends of the earth
and
of the farthest seas,
6
who
formed the mountains by your power,
having
armed yourself with strength,
7
who
stilled the roaring of the seas,
the
roaring of their waves,
and
the turmoil of the nations.
8
Those
living far away fear your wonders;
where
morning dawns and evening fades
you
call forth songs of joy.

You
care for the land and water it;

enrich it abundantly.

streams of God are filled with water

Come,
let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let
us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

Let
us come before him with thanksgiving
and
extol him with music and song.
3
For
the LORD is the great God,
the
great King above all gods.
4
In
his hand are the depths of the earth,
and
the mountain peaks belong to him.
5
The
sea is his, for he made it,
and
his hands formed the dry land.
6
Come,
let us bow down in worship,
let
us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
7
for
he is our God
and
we are the people of his pasture,
the
flock under his care.
Today,
if you hear his voice,

do
not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, A

in the desert,

your fathers tested and tried me,

they had seen what I did.

For
forty years I was angry with that generation;

Those
who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which
cannot be shaken but endures forever.

As
the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so
the LORD surrounds his people
both
now and forevermore.

The
scepter of the wicked will not remain
over
the land allotted to the righteous,
for
then the righteous might use
their
hands to do evil.
4
Do
good, O LORD, to those who are good,
to
those who are upright in heart.
5
But
those who turn to crooked ways
the
LORD will banish with the evildoers.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom,
listen
well to my words of insight,

that
you may maintain discretion
and
your lips may preserve knowledge.

For
the lips of an adulteress drip honey,
and
her speech is smoother than oil;

but
in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp
as a double-edged sword.
5
Her
feet go down to death;
her
steps lead straight to the grave. A

She
gives no thought to the way of life;
her
paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
7
Now
then, my sons, listen to me;
do
not turn aside from what I say.
8
Keep
to a path far from her,
do
not go near the door of her house,

lest
you give your best strength to others
and
your years to one who is cruel,

lest
strangers feast on your wealth
and
your toil enrich another man's house.
11
At
the end of your life you will groan,
when
your flesh and body are spent.

will say, "How I hated discipline!

my heart spurned correction!

would not obey my teachers

listen to my instructors.

have come to the brink of utter ruin
in
the midst of the whole assembly."

Drink
water from your own cistern,
running
water from your own well.

your springs overflow in the streets,
your
streams of water in the public squares?

to be shared with strangers.

your fountain be blessed,

may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

A
loving doe, a graceful deer--

you ever be captivated by her love.

Why
be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?

For
a man's ways are in full view of the LORD,

he examines all his paths.

The
evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the
cords of his sin hold him fast.

will die for lack of discipline,
led

OLD
TESTAMENT:
DANIEL 1:1 - 2:23
1
1
In
the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2
And
the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with
some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to
the temple of his god in Babylonia A
and put in the treasure house of his god.
3
Then
the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in
some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—4
young
men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every
kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified
to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the language and
literature of the Babylonians. B
5
The
king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's
table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they
were to enter the king's service.
6
Among
these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7
The
chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar;
to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8
But
Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine,
and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself
this way. 9
Now
God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, 10
but
the official told Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who
has assigned your C
food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other
young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you."
11
Daniel
then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12
"Please
test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to
eat and water to drink. 13
Then
compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal
food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see."
14
So
he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
15
At
the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished
than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16
So
the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink
and gave them vegetables instead.
17
To
these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all
kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions
and dreams of all kinds.
18
At
the end of the time set by the king to bring them in, the chief
official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19
The
king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king's service. 20
In
every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king
questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the
magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21
And
Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

In
the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was
troubled and he could not sleep. 2
So
the king summoned the 12
magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers A
to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before
the king, 3
he
said to them, "I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to
know what it means. B"
4
Then
the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, C
"O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will
interpret it."
5
The
king replied to the astrologers, "This is what I have firmly
decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I
will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of
rubble. 6
But
if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me
gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret
it for me."
7
Once
more they replied, "Let the king tell his servants the dream,
and we will interpret it."
8
Then
the king answered, "I am certain that you are trying to gain
time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9
If
you do not tell me the dream, there is just one penalty for you. You
have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the
situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know
that you can interpret it for me."
10
The
astrologers answered the king, "There is not a man on earth who
can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has
ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.
11
What
the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king
except the gods, and they do not live among men."
12
This
made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of
all the wise men of Babylon. 13
So
the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent
to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.
14
When
Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to
death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and
tact. 15
He
asked the king's officer, "Why did the king issue such a harsh
decree?" Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16
At
this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might
interpret the dream for him.
17
Then
Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends
Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18
He
urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this
mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the
rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19
During
the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel
praised the God of heaven 20
and
said:
"Praise
be to the name of God for ever and ever; 13
wisdom and power are his.
21
He
changes times and seasons;
he
sets up kings and deposes them.
He
gives wisdom to the wise
and
knowledge to the discerning.
22
He
reveals deep and hidden things;
he
knows what lies in darkness,
and
light dwells with him.
23
I
thank and praise you, O God of my fathers:
You
have given me wisdom and power,
you
have made known to me what we asked of you,
you
have made known to us the dream of the king." 14
NEW
TESTAMENT:
1 PETER 3:8 - 4:6
8
Finally,
all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as
brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9
Do
not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing,
because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
10
For,
"Whoever
would love life
and
see good days
must
keep his tongue from evil
and
his lips from deceitful speech.
11
He
must turn from evil and do good;
he
must seek peace and pursue it.
12
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and
his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but
the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

13
Who
is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14
But
even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do
not fear what they fear B;
do not be frightened."
C
15
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give
an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope
that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16
keeping
a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your
good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
17
It
is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for
doing evil. 18
For
Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous,
to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive
by the Spirit, 19
through
whom D
also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20
who
disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah
while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all,
were saved through water, 21
and
this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the
removal of dirt from the body but the pledge E
of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of
Jesus Christ, 22
who
has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels,
authorities and powers in submission to him.

Therefore,
since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same
attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. 2
As
a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil
human desires, but rather for the will of God.
3
For
you have spent enough 15
time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in
debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable
idolatry.
4
They
think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood
of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. 5
But
they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the
living and the dead. 6
For
this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now
dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the
body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. 16
