PSALMS: 21

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

¹O LORD, the king rejoices in your strength.

How great is his joy in the victories you give!

²You have granted him the desire of his heart

and have not withheld the request of his lips.

Selah

³You welcomed him with rich blessings

and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.

⁴He asked you for life, and you gave it to him--

length of days, for ever and ever.

⁵Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;

you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.

⁶Surely you have granted him eternal blessings

and made him glad with the joy of your presence.

⁷For the king trusts in the LORD;

through the unfailing love of the Most High

he will not be shaken.

⁸Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;

your right hand will seize your foes.

⁹At the time of your appearing

you will make them like a fiery furnace.

In his wrath the LORD will swallow them up,

and his fire will consume them.

¹⁰You will destroy their descendants from the earth,

their posterity from mankind.

¹¹Though they plot evil against you

and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed;

¹²for you will make them turn their backs

when you aim at them with drawn bow. ¹

¹³Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength;

we will sing and praise your might. ²

PSALMS: 51

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

¹Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion

blot out my transgressions.

²Wash away all my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

³For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is always before me.

⁴Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight,

so that you are proved right when you speak

and justified when you judge.

⁵Surely I was sinful at birth,

sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

⁶Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ^A;

you teach ^B me wisdom in the inmost place.

⁷Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;

wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

⁸Let me hear joy and gladness;

let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

⁹Hide your face from my sins

and blot out all my iniquity. ³

¹⁰Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

¹¹Do not cast me from your presence

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

¹²Restore to me the joy of your salvation

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

¹³Then I will teach transgressors your ways,

and sinners will turn back to you.

¹⁴Save me from bloodguilt, O God,

the God who saves me,

and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

¹⁵O Lord, open my lips,

and my mouth will declare your praise.

¹⁶You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;

you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

¹⁷The sacrifices of God are ^C a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart,

O God, you will not despise.

¹⁸In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;

build up the walls of Jerusalem.

¹⁹Then there will be righteous sacrifices,

whole burnt offerings to delight you;

then bulls will be offered on your altar. ⁴

PSALMS: 81

For the director of music. According to gittith. ^A Of Asaph.

¹Sing for joy to God our strength;

shout aloud to the God of Jacob!

²Begin the music, strike the tambourine,

play the melodious harp and lyre.

³Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon,

and when the moon is full, on the day of our Feast;

⁴this is a decree for Israel,

an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

⁵He established it as a statute for Joseph

when he went out against Egypt,

where we heard a language we did not understand. ^B

⁶He says, "I removed the burden from their shoulders;

their hands were set free from the basket.

⁷In your distress you called and I rescued you,

I answered you out of a thundercloud;

I tested you at the waters of Meribah.

⁸"Hear, O my people, and I will warn you--

if you would but listen to me, O Israel!

⁹You shall have no foreign god among you;

you shall not bow down to an alien god.

¹⁰I am the LORD your God,

who brought you up out of Egypt.

Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. ⁵

¹¹"But my people would not listen to me;

Israel would not submit to me.

¹²So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts

to follow their own devices.

¹³"If my people would but listen to me,

if Israel would follow my ways,

¹⁴how quickly would I subdue their enemies

and turn my hand against their foes!

¹⁵Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him,

and their punishment would last forever.

¹⁶But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;

with honey from the rock I would satisfy you." ⁶

PSALMS: 111

¹Praise ^A the LORD. ^B

I will extol the LORD with all my heart

in the council of the upright and in the assembly.

²Great are the works of the LORD;

they are pondered by all who delight in them.

³Glorious and majestic are his deeds,

and his righteousness endures forever.

⁴He has caused his wonders to be remembered;

the LORD is gracious and compassionate.

⁵He provides food for those who fear him;

he remembers his covenant forever.

⁶He has shown his people the power of his works,

giving them the lands of other nations.

⁷The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy.

⁸They are steadfast for ever and ever,

done in faithfulness and uprightness.

⁹He provided redemption for his people;

he ordained his covenant forever--

holy and awesome is his name.

¹⁰The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;

all who follow his precepts have good understanding.

To him belongs eternal praise. ⁷

PSALMS: 141

A psalm of David.

¹O LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me.

Hear my voice when I call to you.

²May my prayer be set before you like incense;

may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

³Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD;

keep watch over the door of my lips.

⁴Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil,

to take part in wicked deeds

with men who are evildoers;

let me not eat of their delicacies.

⁵Let a righteous man ^A strike me--it is a kindness;

let him rebuke me--it is oil on my head.

My head will not refuse it.

Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

⁶their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,

and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.

⁷They will say, "As one plows and breaks up the earth,

so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave. ^B"

⁸But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD;

in you I take refuge--do not give me over to death.

⁹Keep me from the snares they have laid for me,

from the traps set by evildoers.

¹⁰Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

while I pass by in safety. ⁸

PROVERBS: 21

21 ¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD;

he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

²All a man's ways seem right to him,

but the LORD weighs the heart.

³To do what is right and just

is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

⁴Haughty eyes and a proud heart,

the lamp of the wicked, are sin!

⁵The plans of the diligent lead to profit

as surely as haste leads to poverty.

⁶A fortune made by a lying tongue

is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. ^A

⁷The violence of the wicked will drag them away,

for they refuse to do what is right.

⁸The way of the guilty is devious,

but the conduct of the innocent is upright.

⁹Better to live on a corner of the roof

than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

¹⁰The wicked man craves evil;

his neighbor gets no mercy from him. ⁹

¹¹When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom;

when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.

¹²The Righteous One ^B takes note of the house of the wicked

and brings the wicked to ruin.

¹³If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor,

he too will cry out and not be answered.

¹⁴A gift given in secret soothes anger,

and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.

¹⁵When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous

but terror to evildoers.

¹⁶A man who strays from the path of understanding

comes to rest in the company of the dead.

¹⁷He who loves pleasure will become poor;

whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.

¹⁸The wicked become a ransom for the righteous,

and the unfaithful for the upright.

¹⁹Better to live in a desert

than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.

²⁰In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil,

but a foolish man devours all he has.

²¹He who pursues righteousness and love

finds life, prosperity ^C and honor. ¹⁰

²²A wise man attacks the city of the mighty

and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust.

²³He who guards his mouth and his tongue

keeps himself from calamity.

²⁴The proud and arrogant man--"Mocker" is his name;

he behaves with overweening pride.

²⁵The sluggard's craving will be the death of him,

because his hands refuse to work.

²⁶All day long he craves for more,

but the righteous give without sparing.

²⁷The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable--

how much more so when brought with evil intent!

²⁸A false witness will perish,

and whoever listens to him will be destroyed forever. ^D

²⁹A wicked man puts up a bold front,

but an upright man gives thought to his ways.

³⁰There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan

that can succeed against the LORD.

³¹The horse is made ready for the day of battle,

but victory rests with the LORD. ¹¹

OLD TESTAMENT: AMOS 4:1 - 6:14

4 ¹ Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,

you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy

and say to your husbands, "Bring us some drinks!"

²The Sovereign LORD has sworn by his holiness:

"The time will surely come

when you will be taken away with hooks,

the last of you with fishhooks.

³You will each go straight out

through breaks in the wall,

and you will be cast out toward Harmon, ^A"

declares the LORD.

⁴"Go to Bethel and sin;

go to Gilgal and sin yet more.

Bring your sacrifices every morning,

your tithes every three years. ^B

⁵Burn leavened bread as a thank offering

and brag about your freewill offerings--

boast about them, you Israelites,

for this is what you love to do,"

declares the Sovereign LORD.

⁶"I gave you empty stomachs ^C in every city

and lack of bread in every town,

yet you have not returned to me,"

declares the LORD.

⁷"I also withheld rain from you ¹²

when the harvest was still three months away.

I sent rain on one town,

but withheld it from another.

One field had rain;

another had none and dried up.

⁸People staggered from town to town for water

but did not get enough to drink,

yet you have not returned to me,"

declares the LORD.

⁹"Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,

I struck them with blight and mildew.

Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees,

yet you have not returned to me,"

declares the LORD.

¹⁰"I sent plagues among you

as I did to Egypt.

I killed your young men with the sword,

along with your captured horses

I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps,

yet you have not returned to me,"

declares the LORD.

¹¹"I overthrew some of you

as I ^D overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. ¹³

You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire,

yet you have not returned to me,"

declares the LORD.

¹²"Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,

and because I will do this to you,

prepare to meet your God, O Israel."

¹³He who forms the mountains,

creates the wind,

and reveals his thoughts to man,

he who turns dawn to darkness,

and treads the high places of the earth--

the LORD God Almighty is his name.

5 ¹Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:

²"Fallen is Virgin Israel,

never to rise again,

deserted in her own land,

with no one to lift her up."

³This is what the Sovereign LORD says: ¹⁴

"The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel

will have only a hundred left;

the town that marches out a hundred strong

will have only ten left."

⁴This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel:

"Seek me and live;

⁵ do not seek Bethel,

do not go to Gilgal,

do not journey to Beersheba.

For Gilgal will surely go into exile,

and Bethel will be reduced to nothing. ^A"

⁶Seek the LORD and live,

or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire;

it will devour,

and Bethel will have no one to quench it.

⁷You who turn justice into bitterness

and cast righteousness to the ground

⁸(he who made the Pleiades and Orion,

who turns blackness into dawn

and darkens day into night,

who calls for the waters of the sea

and pours them out over the face of the land--

the LORD is his name--

⁹he flashes destruction on the stronghold ¹⁵

and brings the fortified city to ruin),

¹⁰you hate the one who reproves in court

and despise him who tells the truth.

¹¹You trample on the poor

and force him to give you grain.

Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,

you will not live in them;

though you have planted lush vineyards,

you will not drink their wine.

¹²For I know how many are your offenses

and how great your sins.

You oppress the righteous and take bribes

and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

¹³Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times,

for the times are evil.

¹⁴Seek good, not evil,

that you may live.

Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you,

just as you say he is.

¹⁵Hate evil, love good;

maintain justice in the courts.

Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy

on the remnant of Joseph. ¹⁶

¹⁶Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD God Almighty, says:

"There will be wailing in all the streets

and cries of anguish in every public square.

The farmers will be summoned to weep

and the mourners to wail.

¹⁷There will be wailing in all the vineyards,

for I will pass through your midst,"

says the LORD.

¹⁸Woe to you who long

for the day of the LORD!

Why do you long for the day of the LORD?

That day will be darkness, not light.

¹⁹It will be as though a man fled from a lion

only to meet a bear,

as though he entered his house

and rested his hand on the wall

only to have a snake bite him.

²⁰Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light--

pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?

²¹"I hate, I despise your religious feasts;

I cannot stand your assemblies.

²²Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, ¹⁷

I will not accept them.

Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, ^B

I will have no regard for them.

²³Away with the noise of your songs!

I will not listen to the music of your harps.

²⁴But let justice roll on like a river,

righteousness like a never-failing stream!

²⁵"Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings

forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?

²⁶You have lifted up the shrine of your king,

the pedestal of your idols,

the star of your god ^C--

which you made for yourselves.

²⁷Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,"

says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.

6 ¹ Woe to you who are complacent in Zion,

and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria,

you notable men of the foremost nation,

to whom the people of Israel come! ¹⁸

²Go to Calneh and look at it;

go from there to great Hamath,

and then go down to Gath in Philistia.

Are they better off than your two kingdoms?

Is their land larger than yours?

³You put off the evil day

and bring near a reign of terror.

⁴You lie on beds inlaid with ivory

and lounge on your couches.

You dine on choice lambs

and fattened calves.

⁵You strum away on your harps like David

and improvise on musical instruments.

⁶You drink wine by the bowlful

and use the finest lotions,

but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

⁷Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;

your feasting and lounging will end.

⁸The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself--the LORD God Almighty declares:

"I abhor the pride of Jacob

and detest his fortresses;

I will deliver up the city

and everything in it." ¹⁹

⁹If ten men are left in one house, they too will die. ¹⁰And if a relative who is to burn the bodies comes to carry them out of the house and asks anyone still hiding there, "Is anyone with you?" and he says, "No," then he will say, "Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD."

¹¹For the LORD has given the command,

and he will smash the great house into pieces

and the small house into bits.

¹²Do horses run on the rocky crags?

Does one plow there with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness--

¹³you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar ^A

and say, "Did we not take Karnaim ^B by our own strength?"

¹⁴For the LORD God Almighty declares,

"I will stir up a nation against you, O house of Israel,

that will oppress you all the way

from Lebo ^C Hamath to the valley of the Arabah." ²⁰

NEW TESTAMENT: REVELATION 2:18 - 3:6

¹⁸"To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. ¹⁹I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

²⁰Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. ²¹I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. ²²So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. ²³I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

²⁴Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you):

²⁵Only hold on to what you have until I come.

²⁶To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations--

²⁷`He will rule them with an iron scepter;

he will dash them to pieces like pottery' ^B--

just as I have received authority from my Father. ²⁸I will also give him the morning star.

²⁹He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

3 ¹"To the angel ^A of the church in Sardis write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits ^B of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. ²Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. ³Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. ²¹

⁴Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. ⁵He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. ⁶He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ²²

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
