heavens declare the glory of God;

skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day
after day they pour forth speech;
night
after night they display knowledge.

There
is no speech or language
where
their voice is not heard. A

Their

goes out into all the earth,
their
words to the ends of the world.
In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5
which
is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like
a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It
rises at one end of the heavens
and
makes its circuit to the other;
nothing
is hidden from its heat.
7
The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving
the soul.
The
statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making
wise the simple.
8
The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.
The
commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.
9
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring
forever.
The
ordinances of the LORD are sure
and

They
are more precious than gold,
than
much pure gold;
they

the harp I will expound my riddle:

Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--

those
who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches?

No
man can redeem the life of another
or
give to God a ransom for him--

the
ransom for a life is costly,
no
payment is ever enough--

that
he should live on forever
and
not see decay.

For
all can see that wise men die;

foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.

Their

A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.
8
Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for
we are in desperate need.

Help
us, O God our Savior,
for
the glory of your name;
deliver

should the nations say,
"Where

our eyes, make known among the nations

not remain silent,

wicked and deceitful men
have
opened their mouths against me;
they
have spoken against me with lying tongues.

words of hatred they surround me;

attack me without cause.

return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.

They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.

Appoint

hem me in--behind and before;

have laid your hand upon me.

knowledge is too wonderful for me,

lofty for me to attain.

can I go from your Spirit?

can I flee from your presence?

19
1
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.
3
A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A
8
He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.
10
It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. 12

A
king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.

A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.

Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.
16
He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
17
He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.
18
Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. 13
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
29
Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and
beatings for the backs of fools. 14

34
1
Then
Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of
Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole
land--from Gilead to Dan, 2
all
of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of
Judah as far as the western sea, A
3
the
Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of
Palms, as far as Zoar. 4
Then
the LORD said to him, "This
is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I
said,
`I
will give it to your descendants.'
I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over
into it."
5
And
Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had
said.
6He
buried him B
in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one
knows where his grave is. 7
Moses
was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were
not weak nor his strength gone. 8
The
Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until
the time of weeping and mourning was over.
9
Now
Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit C
of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites
listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.
10
Since
then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew
face to face, 11
who
did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in
Egypt--to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12
For
no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds
that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. 15
Joshua
1 1
After
the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua
son of Nun, Moses' aide: 2
"Moses
my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to
cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them--to
the Israelites. 3
I
will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised
Moses.
4
Your
territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great
river, the Euphrates--all the Hittite country--to the Great Sea A
on the west. 5
No
one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life.
As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you
nor forsake you.
6
"Be
strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit
the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.
7
Be
strong and very courageous.
Be
careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you;
do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be
successful wherever you go.
8
Do
not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth;
meditate
on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything
written in it.
Then
you will be prosperous and successful.
9
Have
I not commanded you?
Be
strong and courageous.
Do
not be terrified;
do
not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever
you go."
10
So
Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11
"Go
through the camp and tell the people, `Get your supplies ready. Three
days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take
possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your 16
own.’"
12
But
to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua
said,
13
"Remember
the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: `The LORD
your God is giving you rest and has granted you this land.' 14
Your
wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that
Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, fully
armed, must cross over ahead of your brothers. You are to help your
brothers 15
until
the LORD gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too
have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving
them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which
Moses the servant of the LORD gave you east of the Jordan toward the
sunrise."
16
Then
they answered Joshua, "Whatever you have commanded us we will
do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17
Just
as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your
God be with you as he was with Moses. 18
Whoever
rebels against your word and does not obey your words, whatever you
may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and
courageous!"

Then
Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go,
look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So
they went and entered the house of a prostitute A
named Rahab and stayed there.
2
The
king of Jericho was told, "Look! Some of the Israelites 17
have come here tonight to spy out the land." 3
So
the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the
men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to
spy out the whole land."
4
But
the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, "Yes,
the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5
At
dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don't
know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up
with them." 6
(But
she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of
flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7
So
the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the
fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the
gate was shut.
8
Before
the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9
and
said to them, "I know that the LORD has given this land to you
and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live
in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10We
have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea B
for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og,
the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely
destroyed. C
11
When
we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed
because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on
the earth below. 12
Now
then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to
my 18
family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13
that
you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and
sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from
death."
14
"Our
lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't
tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when
the LORD gives us the land."
15
So
she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she
lived in was part of the city wall. 16
Now
she had said to them, "Go to the hills so the pursuers will not
find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and
then go on your way."
17
The
men said to her, "This oath you made us swear will not be
binding on us
18
unless,
when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window
through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your
father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.
19
If
anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on
his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the
house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on
him.
20
But
if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you
made us swear."
21
"Agreed,"
she replied. "Let it be as you say." So she sent them away
and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22
When
they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three 19
days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned
without finding them.
23
Then
the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the
river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had
happened to them.
24
They
said to Joshua, "The LORD has surely given the whole land into
our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us." 20
NEW

Then
Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his
way to Jerusalem. 23
Someone
asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?"
He
said to them, 24
"Make
every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell
you, will try to enter and will not be able to.
25
Once
the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand
outside knocking and pleading,
`Sir,
open the door for us.'
"But
he will answer,
`I
don't know you or where you come from.'
26
"Then
you will say, `We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our
streets.'
27
"But
he will reply, `I
don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you
evildoers!'
28
"There
will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you
yourselves thrown out.
29
People
will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their
places at the feast in the kingdom of God.
30
Indeed
there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be
last."
31
At
that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave
this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you."
32
He
replied, "Go
tell that fox,
`I
will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the
third day I will reach
21
my
goal.'
33
In
any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day--for
surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!
34
"O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent
to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as
a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
35
Look,
your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me
again until you say,
`Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'

1
One
Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,
he was being carefully watched. 2
There
in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy.
3
Jesus
asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is
it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
4
But
they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and
sent him away.
5
Then
he asked them, "If
one of you has a son
A
or
an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day,
will
you not immediately pull him out?"
6
And
they had nothing to say. 22

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
