My
God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why
are you so far from saving me,
so
far from the words of my groaning?

O
my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by
night, and am not silent.
3
Yet
you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you
are the praise of Israel. A

In
you our fathers put their trust;
they
trusted and you delivered them.
5
They
cried to you and were saved;
in
you they trusted and were not disappointed.
6
But
I am a worm and not a man,
scorned
by men and despised by the people.

All
who see me mock me;
they
hurl insults, shaking their heads:

"He
trusts in the LORD;
let
the LORD rescue him.
Let
him deliver him,
since
he delights in him."

Yet
you brought me out of the womb;

made me trust in you

Why
do you boast of evil, you mighty man?
Why
do you boast all day long,
you
who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
2
Your
tongue plots destruction;
it
is like a sharpened razor,
you
who practice deceit.
3
You
love evil rather than good,
falsehood
rather than speaking the truth.
Selah
4
You
love every harmful word,
O
you deceitful tongue!
5
Surely
God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He
will snatch you up and tear you from your tent;
he
will uproot you from the land of the living.

The
righteous will see and fear;
they

now is the man
who
did not make God his stronghold

presides in the great assembly;

gives judgment among the "gods":

defend the unjust

show partiality to the wicked?

Defend
the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain
the rights of the poor and oppressed.

Rescue
the weak and needy;
deliver
them from the hand of the wicked.

"They
know nothing, they understand nothing.
They
walk about in darkness;
all
the foundations of the earth are shaken.

"I
said, `You are "gods";
you
are all sons of the Most High.'

Praise

Blessed
is the man who fears the LORD,

finds great delight in his commands.

children will be mighty in the land;

generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth
and riches are in his house,

his righteousness endures forever.

in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for
the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. C

will come to him who is generous and lends freely,

conducts his affairs with justice.

he will never be shaken;

righteous man will be remembered forever.

cry aloud to the LORD;

lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.

pour out my complaint before him;

him I tell my trouble.

my spirit grows faint within me,

is you who know my way.

the path where I walk
men
have hidden a snare for me.

Look
to my right and see;
no
one is concerned for me.
I
have no refuge;
no
one cares for my life.

I
cry to you, O LORD;
I
say, "You are my refuge,

A good name is more desirable than great riches;

be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Rich
and poor have this in common:
The
LORD is the Maker of them all.

A
prudent man sees danger and takes refuge,
but
the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Humility
and the fear of the LORD
bring
wealth and honor and life.
5
In
the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares,
but
he who guards his soul stays far from them.
6
Train
A
a child in the way he should go,
and
when he is old he will not turn from it.
7
The
rich rule over the poor,
and
the borrower is servant to the lender.
8
He
who sows wickedness reaps trouble,
and
the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

A
generous man will himself be blessed,
for
he shares his food with the poor.

Drive
out the mocker, and out goes strife;
quarrels

Pay
attention and listen to the sayings of the wise;
apply
your heart to what I teach,

it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart

have all of them ready on your lips.

So
that your trust may be in the LORD,
I
teach you today, even you.

Have
I not written thirty B
sayings for you,
sayings
of counsel and knowledge,

teaching
you true and reliable words,
so
that you can give sound answers
to
him who sent you?

Do
not exploit the poor because they are poor
and
do not crush the needy in court,
23
for
the LORD will take up their case
and
will plunder those who plunder them. 10

Do
not make friends with a hot-tempered man,
do
not associate with one easily angered,
25
or
you may learn his ways
and
get yourself ensnared.
26
Do
not be a man who strikes hands in pledge
or
puts up security for debts;
27
if
you lack the means to pay,
your
very bed will be snatched from under you.
28
Do
not move an ancient boundary stone
set
up by your forefathers.

you see a man skilled in his work?
He
will serve before kings;
he

19
Some
of the men of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the
Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the
Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away.
They said, "It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his
master Saul.") 20
When
David went to Ziklag, these were the men of Manasseh who defected to
him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai,
leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21
They
helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave
warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22
Day
after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the
army of God. A
23
These
are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at
Hebron to turn Saul's kingdom over to him, as the LORD had said:
24
men
of Judah, carrying shield and spear--6,800 armed for battle;
25
men
of Simeon, warriors ready for battle--7,100;
26
men
of Levi--4,600, 27
including
Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28
and
Zadok, a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;
29
men
of Benjamin, Saul's kinsmen--3,000, most of whom had remained loyal
to Saul's house until then;
30
men
of Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans--20,800;
31
men
of half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make
David king--18,000;
32
men
of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel 12
should do--200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;
33
men
of Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type
of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty--50,000;
34
men
of Naphtali--1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying
shields and spears;
35
men
of Dan, ready for battle--28,600;
36
men
of Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle--40,000;
37
and
from east of the Jordan, men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of
Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon--120,000.
38
All
these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They
came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.
All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David
king. 39
The
men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their
families had supplied provisions for them. 40
Also,
their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali
came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were
plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil,
cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

David
conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and
commanders of hundreds. 2
He
then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to
you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far
and wide to the rest of our 13brothers
throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and
Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come
and join us. 3
Let
us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of A
it B
during the reign of Saul." 4
The
whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the
people.
5
So
David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to
Lebo C
Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. 6
David
and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath
Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is
enthroned between the cherubim--the ark that is called by the Name.
7
They
moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah
and Ahio guiding it. 8
David
and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before
God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and
trumpets.
9
When
they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand
to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10
The
LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he
had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
11
Then
David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against
Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. D
12David
was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the
ark of God to me?" 13
He
did not take the ark to be with 14
him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of
Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14
The
ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for
three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he
had.

Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs,
stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2
And
David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and
that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people
Israel.
3I
n Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons
and daughters.
4
These
are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab,
Nathan, Solomon, 5
Ibhar,
Elishua, Elpelet, 6
Nogah,
Nepheg, Japhia, 7
Elishama,
Beeliada A
and Eliphelet.
8
When
the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all
Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard
about it and went out to meet them. 9
Now
the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim; 10 so
David inquired of God: "Shall I go and attack the Philistines?
Will you hand them over to me?"
The
LORD answered him, "Go,
I will hand them over to you."
11
So
David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated
them. He said, "As waters break out, God has broken out against
my enemies by my hand." So that place was called Baal 15
Perazim. B
12
The
Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to
burn them in the fire.
13
Once
more the Philistines raided the valley; 14
so
David inquired of God again, and God answered him, "Do
not go straight up, but circle around them and attack them in front
of the balsam trees. 15
As
soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam
trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in
front of you to strike the Philistine army."
16
So
David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine
army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
17
So
David's fame spread throughout every land, and the LORD made all the
nations fear him. 16

him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to
call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes

am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the
