PSALMS: 29

A psalm of David.

¹Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

²Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

worship the LORD in the splendor of his ^A holiness.

³The voice of the LORD is over the waters;

the God of glory thunders,

the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.

⁴The voice of the LORD is powerful;

the voice of the LORD is majestic.

⁵The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;

the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

⁶He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,

Sirion ^B like a young wild ox.

⁷The voice of the LORD strikes

with flashes of lightning.

⁸The voice of the LORD shakes the desert;

the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.

⁹The voice of the LORD twists the oaks ^C

and strips the forests bare.

And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

¹⁰The LORD sits ^D enthroned over the flood;

the LORD is enthroned as King forever.

¹¹The LORD gives strength to his people;

the LORD blesses his people with peace. ¹

¹Deliver me from my enemies, O God;

protect me from those who rise up against me.

²Deliver me from evildoers

and save me from bloodthirsty men.

³See how they lie in wait for me!

Fierce men conspire against me

for no offense or sin of mine, O LORD.

⁴I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.

Arise to help me; look on my plight!

⁵O LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel,

rouse yourself to punish all the nations;

show no mercy to wicked traitors.

⁶They return at evening,

snarling like dogs,

and prowl about the city.

⁷See what they spew from their mouths--

they spew out swords from their lips,

and they say, "Who can hear us?"

⁸But you, O LORD, laugh at them;

you scoff at all those nations.

⁹O my Strength, I watch for you;

you, O God, are my fortress, ¹⁰my loving God. ²

God will go before me

and will let me gloat over those who slander me.

¹¹But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, ^B

or my people will forget.

In your might make them wander about,

and bring them down.

¹²For the sins of their mouths,

for the words of their lips,

let them be caught in their pride.

For the curses and lies they utter,

¹I will sing of the LORD's great love forever;

with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.

²I will declare that your love stands firm forever,

that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

³You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one,

I have sworn to David my servant,

⁴`I will establish your line forever

and make your throne firm through all generations.'"

⁵The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,

your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

⁶For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?

Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?

⁷In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;

he is more awesome than all who surround him.

⁸O LORD God Almighty, who is like you?

You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

⁹You rule over the surging sea;

¹⁴Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

love and faithfulness go before you.

¹⁵Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,

who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.

¹⁶They rejoice in your name all day long;

they exult in your righteousness.

¹⁷For you are their glory and strength,

and by your favor you exalt our horn. ^B

¹⁸Indeed, our shield ^C belongs to the LORD,

our king to the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹Once you spoke in a vision,

to your faithful people you said:

"I have bestowed strength on a warrior;

I have exalted a young man from among the people.

²⁰I have found David my servant;

with my sacred oil I have anointed him.

²¹My hand will sustain him;

surely my arm will strengthen him.

²²No enemy will subject him to tribute;

no wicked man will oppress him.

²³I will crush his foes before him

and strike down his adversaries.

²⁴My faithful love will be with him,

and through my name his horn ^D will be exalted.

²⁵I will set his hand over the sea,

his right hand over the rivers.

²⁶He will call out to me, `You are my Father,

my God, the Rock my Savior.'

²⁷I will also appoint him my firstborn,

the most exalted of the kings of the earth.

²⁸I will maintain my love to him forever,

and my covenant with him will never fail.

²⁹I will establish his line forever, ⁵

his throne as long as the heavens endure.

³⁰"If his sons forsake my law

and do not follow my statutes,

³¹if they violate my decrees

and fail to keep my commands,

³²I will punish their sin with the rod,

their iniquity with flogging;

³³but I will not take my love from him,

nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.

³⁴I will not violate my covenant

or alter what my lips have uttered.

³⁵Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness--

and I will not lie to David--

³⁶that his line will continue forever

and his throne endure before me like the sun;

³⁷it will be established forever like the moon,

the faithful witness in the sky."

³⁸But you have rejected, you have spurned,

you have been very angry with your anointed one.

³⁹You have renounced the covenant with your servant

and have defiled his crown in the dust.

⁴⁰You have broken through all his walls

and reduced his strongholds to ruins.

⁴¹All who pass by have plundered him;

he has become the scorn of his neighbors.

⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his foes;

you have made all his enemies rejoice.

⁴³You have turned back the edge of his sword

and have not supported him in battle. ⁶

⁴⁴You have put an end to his splendor

and cast his throne to the ground.

⁴⁵You have cut short the days of his youth;

you have covered him with a mantle of shame.

⁴⁶How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?

How long will your wrath burn like fire?

For what futility you have created all men!

¹Blessed ^A are they whose ways are blameless,

who walk according to the law of the LORD.

²Blessed are they who keep his statutes

and seek him with all their heart.

³They do nothing wrong;

they walk in his ways.

⁴You have laid down precepts

that are to be fully obeyed.

⁵Oh, that my ways were steadfast

in obeying your decrees!

⁶Then I would not be put to shame

when I consider all your commands.

⁷I will praise you with an upright heart

as I learn your righteous laws.

⁸I will obey your decrees;

do not utterly forsake me.

⁹How can a young man keep his way pure?

By living according to your word.

¹⁰I seek you with all my heart;

do not let me stray from your commands.

¹¹I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.

all the laws that come from your mouth.

⁵²I remember your ancient laws, O LORD,

and I find comfort in them.

⁵³Indignation grips me because of the wicked,

who have forsaken your law.

⁵⁴Your decrees are the theme of my song

⁵⁵In the night I remember your name, O LORD,

and I will keep your law.

⁵⁶This has been my practice:

I obey your precepts.

⁵⁷You are my portion, O LORD;

I have promised to obey your words.

⁵⁸I have sought your face with all my heart;

be gracious to me according to your promise.

and have turned my steps to your statutes.

⁶⁰I will hasten and not delay

to obey your commands.

⁶¹Though the wicked bind me with ropes,

I will not forget your law.

for your righteous laws.

to all who follow your precepts.

¹Praise the LORD. ^A

Sing to the LORD a new song,

his praise in the assembly of the saints.

²Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;

let the people of Zion be glad in their King.

³Let them praise his name with dancing

and make music to him with tambourine and harp.

⁴For the LORD takes delight in his people;

he crowns the humble with salvation.

⁵Let the saints rejoice in this honor

and sing for joy on their beds.

⁶May the praise of God be in their mouths

and a double-edged sword in their hands,

⁷to inflict vengeance on the nations

and punishment on the peoples,

⁸to bind their kings with fetters,

their nobles with shackles of iron,

⁹to carry out the sentence written against them.

This is the glory of all his saints.

Praise the LORD. ²¹

PROVERBS: 29

29 ¹ A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes

will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.

²When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;

when the wicked rule, the people groan.

³A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,

but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

⁴By justice a king gives a country stability,

but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.

⁵Whoever flatters his neighbor

is spreading a net for his feet.

⁶An evil man is snared by his own sin,

but a righteous one can sing and be glad.

⁷The righteous care about justice for the poor,

but the wicked have no such concern.

⁸Mockers stir up a city,

but wise men turn away anger.

⁹If a wise man goes to court with a fool,

the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.

¹⁰Bloodthirsty men hate a man of integrity

and seek to kill the upright. ²²

¹¹A fool gives full vent to his anger,

but a wise man keeps himself under control.

¹²If a ruler listens to lies,

all his officials become wicked.

¹³The poor man and the oppressor have this in common:

The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.

¹⁴If a king judges the poor with fairness,

his throne will always be secure.

¹⁵The rod of correction imparts wisdom,

but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

¹⁶When the wicked thrive, so does sin,

but the righteous will see their downfall.

¹⁷Discipline your son, and he will give you peace;

he will bring delight to your soul.

¹⁸Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;

but blessed is he who keeps the law.

¹⁹A servant cannot be corrected by mere words;

though he understands, he will not respond.

²⁰Do you see a man who speaks in haste?

There is more hope for a fool than for him.

²¹If a man pampers his servant from youth,

he will bring grief ^A in the end. ²³

²²An angry man stirs up dissension,

and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.

²³A man's pride brings him low,

but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.

²⁴The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy;

he is put under oath and dare not testify.

²⁵Fear of man will prove to be a snare,

but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

²⁶Many seek an audience with a ruler,

but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.

²⁷The righteous detest the dishonest;

the wicked detest the upright. ²⁴

OLD TESTAMENT: 1 CHRONICLES 28:1 - 29:30

28 ¹David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the mighty men and all the brave warriors.

²King David rose to his feet and said: "Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. ³But God said to me, `You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.'

⁴"Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah he chose my family, and from my father's sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. ⁵Of all my sons--and the LORD has given me many--he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. ⁶He said to me: `Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

⁷I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.'

⁸"So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the LORD your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your ²⁵ descendants forever.

⁹"And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. ¹⁰Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do the work."

¹¹Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement.

¹²He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the LORD and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. ¹³He gave him instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the LORD, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service.

¹⁴He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: ¹⁵the weight of gold for the gold lampstands and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; ¹⁶the weight of gold for each table for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the ²⁶ silver tables; ¹⁷the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; ¹⁸and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense. He also gave him the plan for the chariot, that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and shelter the ark of the covenant of the LORD.

¹⁹"All this," David said, "I have in writing from the hand of the LORD upon me, and he gave me understanding in all the details of the plan."

²⁰David also said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. ²¹The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing man skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command."

29 ¹Then King David said to the whole assembly: "My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the LORD God. ²With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God--gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, ^A stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble--all of these in large quantities. ³Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple: ⁴three thousand talents ^B of gold (gold of Ophir) and seven thousand talents ^C of refined silver, for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, ⁵for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?"

⁶Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king's work gave willingly. ⁷They gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents ^D and ten thousand darics ^E of gold, ten thousand talents ^F of silver, eighteen thousand talents ^G of bronze and a hundred thousand talents ^H of iron. ⁸Any who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the temple of the LORD in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

¹⁰David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

"Praise be to you, O LORD, ²⁷ God of our father Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting.

¹¹Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power

and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,

for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom;

you are exalted as head over all.

¹²Wealth and honor come from you;

you are the ruler of all things.

In your hands are strength and power

to exalt and give strength to all.

¹³Now, our God, we give you thanks,

and praise your glorious name.

¹⁴"But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. ¹⁵We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. ¹⁶O LORD our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. ¹⁷I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. ¹⁸O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. ¹⁹And give ²⁸ my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, requirements and decrees and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided."

²⁰Then David said to the whole assembly, "Praise the LORD your God." So they all praised the LORD, the God of their fathers; they bowed low and fell prostrate before the LORD and the king.

²¹The next day they made sacrifices to the LORD and presented burnt offerings to him: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. ²²They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD that day.

Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the LORD to be ruler and Zadok to be priest. ²³So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. ²⁴All the officers and mighty men, as well as all of King David's sons, pledged their submission to King Solomon.

²⁵The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.

²⁶David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. ²⁷He ruled over Israel forty years--seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. ²⁸He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king. ²⁹ ²⁹As for the events of King David's reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer,

³⁰together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands. ³⁰

NEW TESTAMENT: ROMANS 5:6 - 21

⁶You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

⁷Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. ⁸But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

⁹Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! ¹⁰For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! ¹¹Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

¹²Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned—¹³for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law.

¹⁴Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

¹⁵But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! ¹⁶Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. ¹⁷For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's ³¹ abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

¹⁸Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. ¹⁹For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

²⁰The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, ²¹so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. ³²

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
