1
Do not envy wicked men,
do
not desire their company;
2
for
their hearts plot violence,
and
their lips talk about making trouble.
3
By
wisdom a house is built,
and
through understanding it is established;
4
through
knowledge its rooms are filled
with
rare and beautiful treasures.
5
A
wise man has great power,
and
a man of knowledge increases strength;
6
for
waging war you need guidance,
and
for victory many advisers.
7
Wisdom
is too high for a fool;
in
the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.
8
He
who plots evil
will
be known as a schemer.
9
The
schemes of folly are sin,
and
men detest a mocker.
10
If
you falter in times of trouble,
how
small is your strength!
11
Rescue
those being led away to death;
hold
back those staggering toward slaughter.
12
If
you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does
not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does
not he who guards your life know it?
Will
he not repay each person according to what he has done? 9

Eat
honey, my son, for it is good;
honey
from the comb is sweet to your taste.

Know
also that wisdom is sweet to your soul;
if
you find it, there is a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.

Do
not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's house,
do
not raid his dwelling place;
16
for
though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again,
but
the wicked are brought down by calamity.
17
Do
not gloat when your enemy falls;
when
he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18
or
the LORD will see and disapprove
and
turn his wrath away from him.
19
Do
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of the wicked,
20
for
the evil man has no future hope,
and
the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21
Fear
the LORD and the king, my son,
and
do not join with the rebellious,
22
for
those two will send sudden destruction upon them,
and
who knows what calamities they can bring?
23
These
also are sayings of the wise:
To
show partiality in judging is not good:
24
Whoever
says to the guilty, "You are innocent"--
peoples
will curse him and nations denounce him.
25
But
it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and
rich blessing will come upon them. 10

An
honest answer
is
like a kiss on the lips.
27
Finish
your outdoor work
and
get your fields ready;
after
that, build your house.
28
Do
not testify against your neighbor without cause,
or
use your lips to deceive.

Do
not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me;
I'll
pay that man back for what he did."

I
went past the field of the sluggard,
past
the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment;

thorns
had come up everywhere,

ground was covered with weeds,
and
the stone wall was in ruins.

I
applied my heart to what I observed
and
learned a lesson from what I saw:

A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--

poverty will come on you like a bandit

David
left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the
LORD to minister there regularly, according to each day's
requirements. 38
He
also left Obed-Edom and his sixty-eight associates to minister with
them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were gatekeepers.
39
David
left Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of
the LORD at the high place in Gibeon 40
to
present burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering
regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written
in the Law of the LORD, which he had given Israel. 41
With
them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and
designated by name to give thanks to the LORD, "for his love
endures forever." 42
Heman
and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and
cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song.
The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate.
43
Then
all the people left, each for his own home, and David returned home
to bless his family.

After
David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here
I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of
the LORD is under a tent."
2
Nathan
replied to David, "Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is
with you." 12
3 That
night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:
4"Go
and tell my servant David, `This is what the LORD says: You are not
the one to build me a house to dwell in. 5
I
have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of
Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from
one dwelling place to another. 6
Wherever
I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their
leaders A
whom I commanded to shepherd my people, "Why have you not built
me a house of cedar?" '
7
"Now
then, tell my servant David, `This is what the LORD Almighty says: I
took you from the pasture and from following the flock, to be ruler
over my people Israel. 8
I
have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all
your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the
names of the greatest men of the earth. 9
And
I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so
that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.
Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the
beginning 10
and
have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people
Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.
"`I
declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you: 11
When
your days are over and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise
up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will
establish his kingdom. 12
He
is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his
throne forever. 13
I
will be his father,
13
and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I
took it away from your predecessor.
14
I
will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be
established forever.'"
15
Nathan
reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
16
Then
King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said:
"Who
am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me
this far?
17
And
as if this were not enough in your sight, O God, you have spoken
about the future of the house of your servant. You have looked on me
as though I were the most exalted of men, O LORD God.
18
"What
more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know
your servant, 19
O
LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you
have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.
20
"There
is no one like you, O LORD, and there is no God but you, as we have
heard with our own ears. 21
And
who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth whose God
went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for
yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out
nations from 14
before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22
You
made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, O LORD, have
become their God.
23
"And
now, LORD, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and
his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24
so
that it will be established and that your name will be great forever.
Then men will say, `The LORD Almighty, the God over Israel, is
Israel's God!' And the house of your servant David will be
established before you.
25
"You,
my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for
him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26
O
LORD, you are God! You have promised these good things to your
servant. 27
Now
you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may
continue forever in your sight; for you, O LORD, have blessed it, and
it will be blessed forever."

In
the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them,
and he took Gath and its surrounding villages from the control of the
Philistines.
2
David
also defeated the Moabites, and they became subject to him and
brought tribute.
3
Moreover,
David fought Hadadezer king of Zobah, as far as Hamath, when he went
to establish his control along the Euphrates River. 4
David
captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers and
twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but 15
a hundred of the chariot horses.
5
When
the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David
struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6
He
put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans
became subject to him and brought tribute. The LORD gave David
victory everywhere he went.
7
David
took the gold shields carried by the officers of Hadadezer and
brought them to Jerusalem. 8
From
Tebah A
and Cun, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, David took a great
quantity of bronze, which Solomon used to make the bronze Sea, the
pillars and various bronze articles.
9
When
Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of
Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10
he
sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him
on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with
Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and
bronze.
11
King
David dedicated these articles to the LORD, as he had done with the
silver and gold he had taken from all these nations: Edom and Moab,
the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek.
12
Abishai
son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley
of Salt.
13
He
put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David.
The LORD gave David victory everywhere he went.
14
David
reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his
people. 15
Joab
son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was
recorder; 16
Zadok
son of Ahitub and 16
Ahimelech B
son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary;
17
Benaiah
son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's
sons were chief officials at the king's side. 17

1
You,
therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for
at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself,
because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2
Now
we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based
on truth. 3
So
when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same
things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? 4
Or
do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and
patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward
repentance?
5
But
because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are
storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when
his righteous judgment will be revealed.
6
God
"will
give to each person according to what he has done."
A
7
To
those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and
immortality, he will give eternal life. 8
But
for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow
evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9
There
will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:
first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10
but
glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew,
then for the Gentile. 11
For
God does not show favoritism.
12
All
who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and
all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13
For
it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight,
but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14
(Indeed,
when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required
by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not
have the law, 15
since
they show that the 18
requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their
consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing,
now even defending them.)
16
This
will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through
Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
17
Now
you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag
about your relationship to God; 18
if
you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are
instructed by the law; 19
if
you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for
those who are in the dark, 20
an
instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in
the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—21
you,
then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach
against stealing, do you steal? 22
You
who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit
adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
23
You
who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24
As
it is written: "God's
name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."
