LORD is my light and my salvation--

evil men advance against me

an army besiege me,

I may dwell in the house of the LORD

you do not know what a day may bring forth.

another praise you, and not your own mouth;

else, and not your own lips.

Stone
is heavy and sand a burden,

provocation by a fool is heavier than both.

Anger
is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but
who can stand before jealousy?

Better
is open rebuke
than
hidden love.

Wounds
from a friend can be trusted,
but
an enemy multiplies kisses.

He
who is full loathes honey,
but
to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.

Like
a bird that strays from its nest
is
a man who strays from his home.

Perfume
and incense bring joy to the heart,
and
the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.

Do
not forsake your friend and the friend of your father,

These
were the divisions of the sons of Aaron:
The
sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2
But
Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons;
so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests.
3
With
the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelech a descendant
of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed
order of ministering. 4
A
larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar's descendants than
among Ithamar's, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of
families from Eleazar's descendants and eight heads of families from
Ithamar's descendants. 5
They
divided them impartially by drawing lots, for there were officials of
the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both
Eleazar and Ithamar.
6
The
scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in
the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest,
Ahimelech son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests
and of the Levites--one family being taken from Eleazar and then one
from Ithamar.

The
first lot fell to Jehoiarib,
the
second to Jedaiah,

the
third to Harim,
the
fourth to Seorim,
9
the
fifth to Malkijah,
the
sixth to Mijamin,
10
the
seventh to Hakkoz,
the
eighth to Abijah, 11

of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by
their forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded
him.

for the rest of the descendants of Levi:
from
the sons of Amram: Shubael;
from
the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.

As
for Rehabiah, from his sons:
Isshiah
was the first. 12

From
the Izharites: Shelomoth;
from
the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.

The
sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, A
Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.

The
son of Uzziel: Micah;
from
the sons of Micah: Shamir.

The
brother of Micah: Isshiah;
from

sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.

David,
together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons
of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying,
accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men
who performed this service:

From
the sons of Asaph:
Zaccur,
Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the
supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king's supervision. 3
As
for Jeduthun, from his sons:
Gedaliah,
Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, A
Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their
father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking and
praising the LORD. 4
As
for Heman, from his sons:
Bukkiah,
Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah,
Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and
Mahazioth. 5
All
these were sons of Heman the king's seer. They were given him through
the promises of God to exalt him. B
God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All
these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music
of the temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the
ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under
the supervision of the king. 7
Along
with their relatives--all of them trained and skilled in music for
the LORD--they numbered 288.
8
Young
and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their
duties. 13

Obed-Edom

son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their father's family

Elihu and Semakiah were also able men. 8
All
these were descendants of Obed-Edom; they and their sons and their
relatives were capable men with the strength to do the
work--descendants of Obed-Edom, 62 in all.

Meshelemiah
had sons and relatives, who were able men--18 in all.
10
Hosah
the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the
firstborn, his father had appointed him the first), 11
Hilkiah
the second, Tabaliah the third and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and
relatives of Hosah were 13 in all. 17

What
then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this
matter? 2
If,
in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast
about--but not before God. 3
What
does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was
credited to him as righteousness." A

Now
when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as
an obligation.
5
However,
to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked,
his faith is credited as righteousness. 6
David
says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to
whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7
"Blessed
are they
whose
transgressions are forgiven,
whose
sins are covered.
8
Blessed
is the man
whose
sin the Lord will never count against him." B
9
Is
this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the
uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited
to him as righteousness. 10
Under
what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised,
or before? It was not after, but before! 11
And
he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness
that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is
the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order
that righteousness might be credited to them. 18
12
And
he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised
but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father
Abraham had before he was circumcised. 19
