Why,
A
O LORD, do you stand far off?
Why
do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2
In
his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who
are caught in the schemes he devises.
3
He
boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he
blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4
In
his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in
all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5
His
ways are always prosperous;
he
is haughty and your laws are far from him;
he
sneers at all his enemies.
6
He
says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;
I'll
always be happy and never have trouble."
7
His
mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;
trouble
and evil are under his tongue.
8
He
lies in wait near the villages;
from
ambush he murders the innocent,
watching
in secret for his victims.
9
He
lies in wait like a lion in cover;
he
lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he
catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10
His
victims are crushed, they collapse;
they
fall under his strength.

He
says to himself, "God has forgotten;
he
covers his face and never sees." 1

Arise,
LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.
Do
not forget the helpless.

Why
does the wicked man revile God?
Why
does he say to himself,
"He
won't call me to account"?

But
you, O God, do see trouble and grief;
you
consider it to take it in hand.
The
victim commits himself to you;
you
are the helper of the fatherless.
15
Break
the arm of the wicked and evil man;
call
him to account for his wickedness
that
would not be found out.
16
The
LORD is King for ever and ever;
the
nations will perish from his land.

You
hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted;
you
encourage them, and you listen to their cry,

defending
the fatherless and the oppressed,
in

I
waited patiently for the LORD;
he
turned to me and heard my cry.

He
lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out
of the mud and mire;
he
set my feet on a rock
and
gave me a firm place to stand.

He
put a new song in my mouth,
a
hymn of praise to our God.
Many
will see and fear
and
put their trust in the LORD.
4
Blessed
is the man
who
makes the LORD his trust,
who
does not look to the proud,
to
those who turn aside to false gods. A

Many,
O LORD my God,
are
the wonders you have done.
The
things you planned for us
no
one can recount to you;
were
I to speak and tell of them,
they
would be too many to declare.

Sacrifice
and offering you did not desire,
but
my ears you have pierced BC;
burnt
offerings and sin offerings

did not require.

I said, "Here I am, I have come--

pleased, O LORD, to save me;

all who seek to take my life
be
put to shame and confusion;

all who desire my ruin

turned back in disgrace.

those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"

rejoice

Lazy
hands make a man poor,
but
diligent hands bring wealth.

He
who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,

he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

Blessings
crown the head of the righteous,
but
violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. A

memory of the righteous will be a blessing,

wise in heart accept commands,

am the man who has seen affliction
by
the rod of his wrath.
2
He
has driven me away and made me walk
in
darkness rather than light;
3
indeed,
he has turned his hand against me
again
and again, all day long.
4
He
has made my skin and my flesh grow old
and
has broken my bones.
5
He
has besieged me and surrounded me
with
bitterness and hardship.
6
He
has made me dwell in darkness
like
those long dead.
7
He
has walled me in so I cannot escape;
he
has weighed me down with chains.
8
Even
when I call out or cry for help,
he
shuts out my prayer.
9
He
has barred my way with blocks of stone;
he
has made my paths crooked.
10
Like
a bear lying in wait,
like
a lion in hiding,
11he
dragged me from the path and mangled me
and
left me without help.
12
He
drew his bow
and
made me the target for his arrows. 12

He
pierced my heart
with
arrows from his quiver.

I
became the laughingstock of all my people;
they
mock me in song all day long.

He
has filled me with bitter herbs
and
sated me with gall.

has broken my teeth with gravel;

of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,

LORD is good to those whose hope is in him,

the one who seeks him;

is good to wait quietly

him sit alone in silence,

the LORD has laid it on him.

him bury his face in the dust--

may yet be hope.

men are not cast off

he brings grief, he will show compassion,

crush underfoot

prisoners in the land,

deny a man his rights

the Most High,

deprive a man of justice--

not the Lord see such things?

Who
can speak and have it happen

the Lord has not decreed it?

it not from the mouth of the Most High
that
both calamities and good things come?

Why
should any living man complain
when
punished for his sins?

Let
us examine our ways and test them,
and
let us return to the LORD.

Let
us lift up our hearts and our hands
to
God in heaven, and say:

"We
have sinned and rebelled
and
you have not forgiven.
43
"You
have covered yourself with anger and pursued us;
you
have slain without pity.
44
You
have covered yourself with a cloud
so
that no prayer can get through.
45
You
have made us scum and refuse 15
among
the nations.
46
"All
our enemies have opened their mouths
wide
against us.
47
We
have suffered terror and pitfalls,
ruin
and destruction."

Streams
of tears flow from my eyes
because
my people are destroyed.

My
eyes will flow unceasingly,
without
relief,

until
the LORD looks down
from
heaven and sees.

What
I see brings grief to my soul
because
of all the women of my city.
52
Those
who were my enemies without cause
hunted
me like a bird.

They
tried to end my life in a pit
and
threw stones at me;

the
waters closed over my head,
and
I thought I was about to be cut off.

I
called on your name, O LORD,
from
the depths of the pit.

You
heard my plea: "Do not close your ears 16

my cry for relief."

You
came near when I called you,
and
you said, "Do
not fear."

O
Lord, you took up my case;
you
redeemed my life.

You
have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me.
Uphold
my cause!

have seen the depth of their vengeance,

their plots against me.

O
LORD, you have heard their insults,

their plots against me--

what
my enemies whisper and mutter

at them! Sitting or standing,

them back what they deserve, O LORD,

In
the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many
times and in various ways, 2
but
in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed
heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3
The
Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of
his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had
provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the
Majesty in heaven. 4
So
he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited
is superior to theirs.
5
For
to which of the angels did God ever say,
"You
are my Son;
today
I have become your Father A" B?
Or
again,
"I
will be his Father,
and
he will be my Son" C?

And
again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
"Let
all God's angels worship him."

In
speaking of the angels he says,
"He
makes his angels winds,
his
servants flames of fire."

about the Son he says,
"Your
throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,

righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
