heavens declare the glory of God;
the
skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2
Day
after day they pour forth speech;
night
after night they display knowledge.
3
There
is no speech or language
where
their voice is not heard. A

Their

goes out into all the earth,
their
words to the ends of the world.
In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5
which
is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like
a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6
It
rises at one end of the heavens
and
makes its circuit to the other;
nothing
is hidden from its heat.
7
The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving
the soul.
The
statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making
wise the simple.
8
The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.
The
commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.
9
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring
forever.
The
ordinances of the LORD are sure
and
altogether righteous. 1

They
are more precious than gold,
than
much pure gold;
they
are sweeter than honey,
than
honey from the comb.

By
them is your servant warned;

mouth will speak words of wisdom;

utterance from my heart will give understanding.

will turn my ear to a proverb;
with
the harp I will expound my riddle:

Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--
6
those
who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches?
7
No
man can redeem the life of another
or
give to God a ransom for him--
8
the
ransom for a life is costly,
no
payment is ever enough--
9
that
he should live on forever
and
not see decay.
10
For
all can see that wise men die;
the
foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.

Their
tombs will remain their houses A

dwellings for endless generations,

But
man, despite his riches, does not endure;

A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.
8
Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for
we are in desperate need.

Help
us, O God our Savior,
for
the glory of your name;
deliver

should the nations say,

O
God, whom I praise,
do
not remain silent,
2
for
wicked and deceitful men
have
opened their mouths against me;
they
have spoken against me with lying tongues.
3
With
words of hatred they surround me;
they
attack me without cause.
4
In
return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.
5
They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.
6
Appoint
A
an evil man B
to oppose him;
let
an accuser C
stand at his right hand.
7
When
he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and
may his prayers condemn him.

May
his days be few;

another take his place of leadership.

his children be fatherless

well with me for your name's sake;

LORD, you have searched me

you know me.

know when I sit and when I rise;

a word is on my tongue

know it completely, O LORD.

hem me in--behind and before;
you
have laid your hand upon me.

Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too
lofty for me to attain.

Where
can I go from your Spirit?

can I flee from your presence?

I go up to the heavens, you are there;

count them my enemies.

me, O God, and know my heart;

19
1
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.
3
A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A
8
He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.
10
It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. 12

A
king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.
13
A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.

Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.

He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
17
He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.
18
Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. 13
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
29
Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and
beatings for the backs of fools. 14

The
word of the LORD came to me: 2
"What
do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:
"`The
fathers eat sour grapes,
and
the children's teeth are set on edge'?
3
"As
surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer
quote this proverb in Israel. 4
For
every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both
alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
5
"Suppose
there is a righteous man
who
does what is just and right.
6
He
does not eat at the mountain shrines
or
look to the idols of the house of Israel.
He
does not defile his neighbor's wife
or
lie with a woman during her period.
7
He
does not oppress anyone,
but
returns what he took in pledge for a loan.
He
does not commit robbery
but
gives his food to the hungry
and
provides clothing for the naked.
8
He
does not lend at usury
or
take excessive interest. A
He
withholds his hand from doing wrong
and
judges fairly between man and man.
9
He
follows my decrees
and
faithfully keeps my laws.
That
man is righteous;
he
will surely live, 15
declares
the Sovereign LORD.

"Suppose
he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other
things B
11
(though
the father has done none of them):
"He
eats at the mountain shrines.
He
defiles his neighbor's wife.
12
He
oppresses the poor and needy.
He
commits robbery.
He
does not return what he took in pledge.
He
looks to the idols.
He
does detestable things.
13
He
lends at usury and takes excessive interest.
Will
such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these
detestable things, he will surely be put to death and his blood will
be on his own head.
14
"But
suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits,
and though he sees them, he does not do such things:
15
"He
does not eat at the mountain shrines
or
look to the idols of the house of Israel.
He
does not defile his neighbor's wife.
16
He
does not oppress anyone
or
require a pledge for a loan.
He
does not commit robbery
but
gives his food to the hungry
and
provides clothing for the naked.
and
takes no usury or excessive interest.
He
keeps my laws and follows my decrees.
He
will not die for his father's sin; he will surely live. 18
But
his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion,
robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.
19
"Yet
you ask, `Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since
the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep
all my decrees, he will surely live.
20
The
soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the
guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son.
The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and
the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
21
"But
if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and
keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely
live; he will not die. 22
None
of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him.
Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live. 23
Do
I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the
Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their
ways and live?
24
"But
if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and
does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live?
None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because
of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has
committed, he will die.
25
"Yet
you say, `The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel:
Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26
If
a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will
die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. 27
But
if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and
does what is just and right, he will save his life. 28
Because
he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from
them, he will surely live; he will not die. 29
Yet
the house of Israel says, `The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my
ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
30
"Therefore,
O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways,
declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your
offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31
Rid
yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new
heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32
For
I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign
LORD. Repent and live! 17

up a lament concerning the princes of Israel 2
and
say:
"`What
a lioness was your mother
among
the lions!
She
lay down among the young lions
and
reared her cubs.
3
She
brought up one of her cubs,
and
he became a strong lion.
He
learned to tear the prey
and
he devoured men.

The
nations heard about him,
and
he was trapped in their pit.
They
led him with hooks
to
the land of Egypt.
5
"`When
she saw her hope unfulfilled,
her
expectation gone,
she
took another of her cubs
and
made him a strong lion.
6
He
prowled among the lions,
for
he was now a strong lion.
He
learned to tear the prey
and
he devoured men.

He
broke down A
their strongholds
and
devastated their towns.
The
land and all who were in it
were
terrified by his roaring. 18

Then
the nations came against him,
those
from regions round about.
They
spread their net for him,
and
he was trapped in their pit.

With
hooks they pulled him into a cage
and
brought him to the king of Babylon.
They
put him in prison,
so
his roar was heard no longer
on
the mountains of Israel.

"`Your
mother was like a vine in your vineyard B
planted
by the water;
it
was fruitful and full of branches
because
of abundant water.
11
Its
branches were strong,
fit
for a ruler's scepter.
It
towered high
above
the thick foliage,
conspicuous
for its height
and
for its many branches.
12
But
it was uprooted in fury
and
thrown to the ground.
The
east wind made it shrivel,
it
was stripped of its fruit;
its
strong branches withered
and
fire consumed them.

Now
it is planted in the desert,
in
a dry and thirsty land.
14
Fire
spread from one of its main C
branches
and
consumed its fruit.
No
strong branch is left on it
fit
for a ruler's scepter.'
This
is a lament and is to be used as a lament."

Now
the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly
sanctuary.
2
A
tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand, the
table and the consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3
Behind
the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4
which
had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the
covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff
that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5
Above
the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement
cover. A
But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.
6
When
everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly
into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7
But
only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a
year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for
the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8
The
Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place
had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still
standing. 9
This
is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts
and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of
the worshiper. 10
They
are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial
washings--external regulations applying until the time of the new
order. 21
