the LORD cut off all flattering lips
and
every boastful tongue

that
says, "We will triumph with our tongues;
we
own our lips B--who
is our master?"
5
"Because
of the oppression of the weak
and
the groaning of the needy,
I
will now arise,"
says the LORD.
"I
will protect them from those who malign them."

And
the words of the LORD are flawless,
like
silver refined in a furnace of clay,
purified
seven times.

O
LORD, you will keep us safe
and
protect us from such people forever.

Endow
the king with your justice, O God,

royal son with your righteousness.

will defend the afflicted among the people

save the children of the needy;

A
prayer of an afflicted man. When he is faint and pours out his lament
before the LORD.
1
Hear
my prayer, O LORD;
let
my cry for help come to you.
2
Do
not hide your face from me
when
I am in distress.
Turn
your ear to me;
when
I call, answer me quickly.
3
For
my days vanish like smoke;
my
bones burn like glowing embers.
4
My
heart is blighted and withered like grass;
I
forget to eat my food.
5
Because
of my loud groaning
I
am reduced to skin and bones.
6
I
am like a desert owl,
like
an owl among the ruins.
7
I
lie awake; I have become
like
a bird alone on a roof.

All
day long my enemies taunt me;
those
who rail against me use my name as a curse.

For
I eat ashes as my food
and
mingle my drink with tears

of your great wrath,

release those condemned to death."

So
the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion
and
his praise in Jerusalem

the peoples and the kingdoms
assemble
to worship the LORD.

I said:
"Do
not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days;
your
years go on through all generations.

the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,

O
LORD, remember David

all the hardships he endured.

swore an oath to the LORD
and
made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

"I
will not enter my house

go to my bed--

I
will allow no sleep to my eyes,
no
slumber to my eyelids,
5
till
I find a place for the LORD,
a
dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."

We
heard it in Ephrathah,

"Let
us go to his dwelling place;
let
us worship at his footstool--

arise,

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,

he who hates correction is stupid.

good man obtains favor from the LORD,

the LORD condemns a crafty man.

man cannot be established through wickedness,

the righteous cannot be uprooted.

A
wife of noble character is her husband's crown,
but
a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

The
plans of the righteous are just,
but
the advice of the wicked is deceitful.

The
words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,
but
the speech of the upright rescues them.

Wicked
men are overthrown and are no more,
but
the house of the righteous stands firm.

A
man is praised according to his wisdom,
but
men with warped minds are despised.

Better
to be a nobody and yet have a servant

pretend to be somebody and have no food.

The
LORD said to Job:

"Will
the one who contends with the Almighty correct him?
Let
him who accuses God answer him!"
3
Then Job answered the LORD:
4
"I
am unworthy--how can I reply to you?
I
put my hand over my mouth.
5
I spoke once, but I have no answer--
twice,
but I will say no more."
6
Then
the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm:
7
"Brace
yourself like a man;
I
will question you,
and
you shall answer me.
8
"Would you discredit my justice?
Would
you condemn me to justify yourself?
9
Do you have an arm like God's,
and
can your voice thunder like his?
10
Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
and
clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
11
Unleash the fury of your wrath,
look
at every proud man and bring him low,
12
look at every proud man and humble him,
crush
the wicked where they stand.
13
Bury them all in the dust together;
shroud
their faces in the grave.

Then I myself will admit to you 14
that
your own right hand can save you.

which
I made along with you

which feeds on grass like an ox.

What strength he has in his loins,

you pull in the leviathan A
with a fishhook
or
tie down his tongue with a rope?

Can you put a cord through his nose
or
pierce his jaw with a hook?

Will he keep begging you for mercy?
Will
he speak to you with gentle words?

Will he make an agreement with you
for
you to take him as your slave for life?
5
Can you make a pet of him like a bird
or
put him on a leash for your girls?

Will traders barter for him?
Will
they divide him up among the merchants?

Can
you fill his hide with harpoons
or
his head with fishing spears?

If
you lay a hand on him,
you
will remember the struggle and never do it again!

Any hope of subduing him is false;
the
mere sight of him is overpowering.

No one is fierce enough to rouse him.
Who
then is able to stand against me?

Who has a claim against me that I must pay?
Everything
under heaven belongs to me.

"I will not fail to speak of his limbs,
his
strength and his graceful form.

Who can strip off his outer coat?
Who
would approach him with a bridle? 16

Who dares open the doors of his mouth,
ringed
about with his fearsome teeth?

sealed together;

each is so close to the next

no air can pass between.

They are joined fast to one another;

cling together and cannot be parted.

His snorting throws out flashes of light;

eyes are like the rays of dawn.

Smoke pours from his nostrils

from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.

His breath sets coals ablaze,

flames dart from his mouth.

Strength resides in his neck;
dismay

The folds of his flesh are tightly joined;

His chest is hard as rock,
hard
as a lower millstone.

The sword that reaches him has no effect,
nor
does the spear or the dart or the javelin.

Iron he treats like straw

bronze like rotten wood.

Arrows do not make him flee;

are like chaff to him.

A club seems to him but a piece of straw;
he
laughs at the rattling of the lance.

His undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving
a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.

He makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron
and
stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.

Behind him he leaves a glistening wake;
one
would think the deep had white hair.

Nothing on earth is his equal--
a
creature without fear.

He looks down on all that are haughty;
he
is king over all that are proud."

Then
Job replied to the LORD:
2
"I
know that you can do all things;
no
plan of yours can be thwarted.
3
You
asked, `Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?'
Surely
I spoke of things I did not understand,
things
too wonderful for me to know.
4
"You
said, `Listen now, and I will speak;
I
will question you,
and
you shall answer me.'
5
My ears had heard of you
but
now my eyes have seen you.
6
Therefore I despise myself
and
repent in dust and ashes."
7
After
the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the
Temanite, "I
am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken
of me what is right, as my servant Job has. 8
So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and
sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray
for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according
to your folly. You have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant
Job has."
9
So
Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite
did what the LORD told them; and the LORD accepted Job's prayer.
10
After
Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again
and gave him twice as much as he had before. 11
All
his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came
and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over
all the trouble 19
the
LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver A
and a gold ring.
12
The
LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first. He
had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of
oxen and a thousand donkeys.
13
And
he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14
The
first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third
Keren-Happuch. 15
Nowhere
in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's
daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with
their brothers.
16
After
this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and
their children to the fourth generation. 17
And
so he died, old and full of years. 20
NEW
TESTAMENT:
2 CORINTHIANS 5:11 - 21
11
Since,
then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.
What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your
conscience. 12
We
are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you
an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who
take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13
If
we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our
right mind, it is for you. 14
For
Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for
all, and therefore all died. 15
And
he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for
themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16
So
from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we
once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17
Therefore,
if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the
new has come! 18
All
this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and
gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
19
that
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting
men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of
reconciliation. 20
We
are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his
appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled
to God. 21
God
made him who had no sin to be sin A
for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 21
