Give
ear to my words, O LORD,
consider
my sighing.

Listen
to my cry for help,
my
King and my God,
for
to you I pray.

In
the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice;
in
the morning I lay my requests before you
and
wait in expectation.
4
You
are not a God who takes pleasure in evil;
with
you the wicked cannot dwell.
5
The
arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
you
hate all who do wrong.
6
You
destroy those who tell lies;
bloodthirsty
and deceitful men
the
LORD abhors.
7
But
I, by your great mercy,
will
come into your house;
in
reverence will I bow down
toward
your holy temple.
8
Lead
me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because
of my enemies--
make
straight your way before me. 1
9
Not
a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their
heart is filled with destruction.
Their
throat is an open grave;
with

Of

1
Contend,
O LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight
against those who fight against me.

Take
up shield and buckler;
arise
and come to my aid.

Brandish
spear and javelin A
against
those who pursue me.
Say
to my soul,
"I
am your salvation."
4
May
those who seek my life
be
disgraced and put to shame;
may
those who plot my ruin
be
turned back in dismay.
5
May
they be like chaff before the wind,
with
the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6
may
their path be dark and slippery,
with
the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7
Since
they hid their net for me without cause
and
without cause dug a pit for me,

may
ruin overtake them by surprise--
may
the net they hid entangle them,
may
they fall into the pit, to their ruin.

Then
my soul will rejoice in the LORD
and
delight in his salvation.

My
whole being will exclaim,
"Who
is like you, O LORD?
You
rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the
poor and needy from those who rob them." 3

Ruthless
witnesses come forward;
they
question me on things I know nothing about.
12
They
repay me evil for good
and
leave my soul forlorn.
13
Yet
when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and
humbled myself with fasting.
When
my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14
I
went about mourning
as
though for my friend or brother.
I
bowed my head in grief
as
though weeping for my mother.
15
But
when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
attackers
gathered against me when I was unaware.
They
slandered me without ceasing.
16
Like
the ungodly they maliciously mocked B;
they
gnashed their teeth at me.
17
O
Lord, how long will you look on?
Rescue
my life from their ravages,
my
precious life from these lions.
18
I
will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among
throngs of people I will praise you.
19
Let
not those gloat over me
who
are my enemies without cause;
let
not those who hate me without reason
maliciously
wink the eye.
20
They
do not speak peaceably,
but
devise false accusations
against
those who live quietly in the land.
21
They
gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha!
With
our own eyes we have seen it." 4
22
O
LORD, you have seen this; be not silent.
Do
not be far from me, O Lord.
23
Awake,
and rise to my defense!
Contend
for me, my God and Lord.
24
Vindicate
me in your righteousness, O LORD my God;

not let them gloat over me.

not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!"
or
say, "We have swallowed him up."

May
all who gloat over my distress
be
put to shame and confusion;

Praise

you, O God, in Zion;

you our vows will be fulfilled.

O
you who hear prayer,

you all men will come.

When
we were overwhelmed by sins,
you

our transgressions.

Blessed
are those you choose
and
bring near to live in your courts!
We
are filled with the good things of your house,
of
your holy temple.
5
You
answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
O
God our Savior,
the
hope of all the ends of the earth
and
of the farthest seas,
6
who
formed the mountains by your power,
having
armed yourself with strength,
7
who
stilled the roaring of the seas,
the
roaring of their waves,
and
the turmoil of the nations.

Those
living far away fear your wonders;
where
morning dawns and evening fades

care for the land and water it;

Come,
let us sing for joy to the LORD;

us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

extol him with music and song.

the LORD is the great God,

great King above all gods.

In
his hand are the depths of the earth,
and
the mountain peaks belong to him.

The
sea is his, for he made it,
and
his hands formed the dry land.

Come,
let us bow down in worship,

us kneel before the LORD our Maker;

he is our God

who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,

the land allotted to the righteous,
for
then the righteous might use
their
hands to do evil.

Do
good, O LORD, to those who are good,

those who are upright in heart.

But
those who turn to crooked ways

My son, pay attention to my wisdom,

well to my words of insight,

the lips of an adulteress drip honey,

as a double-edged sword.

Her
feet go down to death;

paths are crooked, but she knows it not.

then, my sons, listen to me;

Drink

Then
Job replied:

"I
have heard many things like these;
miserable
comforters are you all!
3
Will
your long-winded speeches never end?
What
ails you that you keep on arguing?
4
I
also could speak like you,
if
you were in my place;
I
could make fine speeches against you
and
shake my head at you.
5
But
my mouth would encourage you;
comfort
from my lips would bring you relief.
6
"Yet
if I speak, my pain is not relieved;
and
if I refrain, it does not go away.
7
Surely,
O God, you have worn me out;
you
have devastated my entire household.
8
You
have bound me--and it has become a witness;
my
gauntness rises up and testifies against me.
9
God
assails me and tears me in his anger
and
gnashes his teeth at me;
my
opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.
10
Men
open their mouths to jeer at me;
they
strike my cheek in scorn
and
unite together against me. 12
11
God
has turned me over to evil men
and
thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.

All
was well with me, but he shattered me;
he
seized me by the neck and crushed me.
He
has made me his target;

his
archers surround me.
Without
pity, he pierces my kidneys
and
spills my gall on the ground.

Again
and again he bursts upon me;
he
rushes at me like a warrior.

"I
have sewed sackcloth over my skin
and
buried my brow in the dust.

My
face is red with weeping,
deep
shadows ring my eyes;

yet
my hands have been free of violence
and
my prayer is pure.

"O
earth, do not cover my blood;
may
my cry never be laid to rest!

Even
now my witness is in heaven;

advocate is on high.

intercessor is my friend A

my eyes pour out tears to God;

behalf of a man he pleads with God

a few years will pass
before
I go on the journey of no return.

My spirit is broken,
my
days are cut short,

grave awaits me.

Surely
mockers surround me;

eyes must dwell on their hostility.

"Give
me, O God, the pledge you demand.

else will put up security for me?

You
have closed their minds to understanding;
therefore
you will not let them triumph.

If
a man denounces his friends for reward,
the
eyes of his children will fail.

"God
has made me a byword to everyone,
a
man in whose face people spit.

My
eyes have grown dim with grief;
my
whole frame is but a shadow.

Upright
men are appalled at this;
the
innocent are aroused against the ungodly.

Nevertheless,
the righteous will hold to their ways,
and
those with clean hands will grow stronger. 14

"But
come on, all of you, try again!
I
will not find a wise man among you.

My
days have passed, my plans are shattered,
and
so are the desires of my heart.

These
men turn night into day;
in
the face of darkness they say, `Light is near.'

If
the only home I hope for is the grave, A

I spread out my bed in darkness,

if
I say to corruption, `You are my father,'
and
to the worm, `My mother' or `My sister,'

where
then is my hope?
Who
can see any hope for me?

Will
it go down to the gates of death B?

we descend together into the dust?"

When will you end these speeches?
Be
sensible, and then we can talk.

are we regarded as cattle
and
considered stupid in your sight?

You
who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, 15
is
the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
Or
must the rocks be moved from their place?

"The
lamp of the wicked is snuffed out;
the
flame of his fire stops burning.

The
light in his tent becomes dark;
the
lamp beside him goes out.
7
The
vigor of his step is weakened;
his
own schemes throw him down.
8
His
feet thrust him into a net
and
he wanders into its mesh.
9
A
trap seizes him by the heel;
a
snare holds him fast.

A
noose is hidden for him on the ground;
a
trap lies in his path.

Terrors
startle him on every side
and
dog his every step.

Calamity
is hungry for him;
disaster
is ready for him when he falls.

It
eats away parts of his skin;
death's
firstborn devours his limbs.

He
is torn from the security of his tent
and
marched off to the king of terrors.

roots dry up below

his branches wither above.

memory of him perishes from the earth;

long will you torment me
and
crush me with words?
3
Ten
times now you have reproached me;
shamelessly
you attack me.

If
it is true that I have gone astray,
my
error remains my concern alone.

If
indeed you would exalt yourselves above me
and
use my humiliation against me,

then
know that God has wronged me 17
and
drawn his net around me.

"Though
I cry, `I've been wronged!' I get no response;
though
I call for help, there is no justice.

He
has blocked my way so I cannot pass;

has shrouded my paths in darkness.

has stripped me of my honor

removed the crown from my head.

Now
about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian
churches to do.

On
the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum
of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I
come no collections will have to be made.
3
Then,
when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you
approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. 4
If
it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me.
5
After
I go through Macedonia, I will come to you--for I will be going
through Macedonia.
6
Perhaps
I will stay with you awhile, or even spend the winter, so that you
can help me on my journey, wherever I go. 7
I
do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to
spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. 8
But
I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, 9
because
a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many
who oppose me.
10
If
Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with
you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am. 11
No
one, then, should refuse to accept him. Send him on his way in peace
so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the
brothers.

Now
about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the
brothers. He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he
has the opportunity.

Be
on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.

Do
everything in love.

You
know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in
Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the
saints. I urge you, brothers, 16
to
submit to such as these and to everyone who joins in the work, and
labors at it. 17
I
was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because
they have supplied what was lacking from you. 18
For
they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve
recognition.
