have granted him the desire of his heart

welcomed him with rich blessings

placed a crown of pure gold on his head.

He
asked you for life, and you gave it to him--
length
of days, for ever and ever.
5
Through
the victories you gave, his glory is great;
you
have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.

Surely
you have granted him eternal blessings
and
made him glad with the joy of your presence.

For
the king trusts in the LORD;
through
the unfailing love of the Most High
he
will not be shaken.

Your
hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
your
right hand will seize your foes.

At
the time of your appearing
you
will make them like a fiery furnace.
In
his wrath the LORD will swallow them up,

mercy on me, O God,

out my transgressions.

I know my transgressions,

my sin is always before me.

Against
you, you only, have I sinned
and
done what is evil in your sight,

that you are proved right when you speak

justified when you judge.

is a decree for Israel,

Praise
A

I
will extol the LORD with all my heart
in
the council of the upright and in the assembly.

Great
are the works of the LORD;
they
are pondered by all who delight in them.

Glorious
and majestic are his deeds,
and
his righteousness endures forever.

He
has caused his wonders to be remembered;
the
LORD is gracious and compassionate.
5
He
provides food for those who fear him;

remembers his covenant forever.

He
has shown his people the power of his works,

them the lands of other nations.

O
LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me.
Hear
my voice when I call to you.

May
my prayer be set before you like incense;

the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

Set
a guard over my mouth, O LORD;
keep
watch over the door of my lips.
4
Let
not my heart be drawn to what is evil,
to
take part in wicked deeds
with
men who are evildoers;
let
me not eat of their delicacies.
5
Let
a righteous man A
strike me--it is a kindness;
let
him rebuke me--it is oil on my head.
My
head will not refuse it.
Yet
my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

their
rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,

the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD;
he
directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

All
a man's ways seem right to him,
but
the LORD weighs the heart.

To
do what is right and just
is
more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
4
Haughty
eyes and a proud heart,
the
lamp of the wicked, are sin!
5
The
plans of the diligent lead to profit
as
surely as haste leads to poverty.
6
A
fortune made by a lying tongue
is
a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. A
7
The
violence of the wicked will drag them away,
for
they refuse to do what is right.
8
The
way of the guilty is devious,
but
the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9
Better
to live on a corner of the roof
than
share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

The
wicked man craves evil;
his
neighbor gets no mercy from him. 9

When
a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom;

takes note of the house of the wicked
and
brings the wicked to ruin.

a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor,

gift given in secret soothes anger,

proud and arrogant man--"Mocker" is his name;

behaves with overweening pride.

sluggard's craving will be the death of him,
because

day long he craves for more,

the righteous give without sparing.

The
sacrifice of the wicked is detestable--
how
much more so when brought with evil intent!

false witness will perish,
and

wicked man puts up a bold front,
but
an upright man gives thought to his ways.

There
is no wisdom, no insight, no plan
that
can succeed against the LORD.

horse is made ready for the day of battle,

TESTAMENT:
JEREMIAH 14:11 - 16:15
11
Then
the LORD said to me, "Do
not pray for the well-being of this people.
12
Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer
burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead,
I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague."
13
But
I said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, the prophets keep telling them,
`You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you
lasting peace in this place.' "
14
Then
the LORD said to me, "The
prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or
appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false
visions, divinations, idolatries A
and the delusions of their own minds. 15
Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who are
prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, `No
sword or famine will touch this land.' Those same prophets will
perish by sword and famine. 16
And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the
streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be
no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I
will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.
17
"Speak
this word to them:
"`Let
my eyes overflow with tears
night
and day without ceasing;
for
my virgin daughter--my people--
has
suffered a grievous wound,
a
crushing blow.
18
If I go into the country,
I
see those slain by the sword;
if
I go into the city,
I
see the ravages of famine.
Both
prophet and priest
have
gone to a land they know not.'"
19
Have
you rejected Judah completely?
Do
you despise Zion? 12
Why
have you afflicted us
so
that we cannot be healed?
We
hoped for peace
but
no good has come,
for
a time of healing
but
there is only terror.
20
O
LORD, we acknowledge our wickedness
and
the guilt of our fathers;
we
have indeed sinned against you.
21
For
the sake of your name do not despise us;
do
not dishonor your glorious throne.
Remember
your covenant with us
and
do not break it.
22
Do
any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
Do
the skies themselves send down showers?
No,
it is you, O LORD our God.
Therefore
our hope is in you,
for
you are the one who does all this.

Then
the LORD said to me: "Even
if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go
out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go!
2
And if they ask you, `Where shall we go?' tell them, `This is what
the LORD says:
"`Those
destined for death, to death;
those
for the sword, to the sword; 13
those
for starvation, to starvation;
those
for captivity, to captivity.'
3
"I
will send four kinds of destroyers against them,"
declares the LORD, "the
sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds of the air and
the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4
I will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth because
of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.
5
"Who
will have pity on you, O Jerusalem?
Who
will mourn for you?
Who
will stop to ask how you are?
6
You have rejected me," declares the LORD.
"You
keep on backsliding.
So
I will lay hands on you and destroy you;
I
can no longer show compassion.
7
I will winnow them with a winnowing fork
at
the city gates of the land.
I
will bring bereavement and destruction on my people,
for
they have not changed their ways.
8
I will make their widows more numerous
than
the sand of the sea.
At
midday I will bring a destroyer
against
the mothers of their young men;
suddenly
I will bring down on them
anguish
and terror.
9
The mother of seven will grow faint
and
breathe her last.
Her
sun will set while it is still day; 14
she
will be disgraced and humiliated.
I
will put the survivors to the sword
before
their enemies,"
declares
the LORD.
10
Alas,
my mother, that you gave me birth,
a
man with whom the whole land strives and contends!
I
have neither lent nor borrowed,
yet
everyone curses me.
11
The
LORD said,
"Surely
I will deliver you for a good purpose;
surely
I will make your enemies plead with you
in
times of disaster and times of distress.
12
"Can
a man break iron--
iron
from the north--or bronze?
13
Your wealth and your treasures
I
will give as plunder, without charge,
because
of all your sins
throughout
your country.
14
I will enslave you to your enemies
in
A
a land you do not know,
for
my anger will kindle a fire
that
will burn against you."
15
You
understand, O LORD; 15
remember
me and care for me.
Avenge
me on my persecutors.
You
are long-suffering--do not take me away;
think
of how I suffer reproach for your sake.

When
your words came, I ate them;
they
were my joy and my heart's delight,
for
I bear your name,
O
LORD God Almighty.
17
I
never sat in the company of revelers,
never
made merry with them;
I
sat alone because your hand was on me
and
you had filled me with indignation.
18Why
is my pain unending
and
my wound grievous and incurable?
Will
you be to me like a deceptive brook,
like
a spring that fails?
19
Therefore
this is what the LORD says:
"If
you repent, I will restore you
that
you may serve me;
if
you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
you
will be my spokesman.
Let
this people turn to you,
but
you must not turn to them.
20
I will make you a wall to this people, 16
a
fortified wall of bronze;
they
will fight against you
but
will not overcome you,
for
I am with you
to
rescue and save you,"
declares
the LORD.
21
"I
will save you from the hands of the wicked
and
redeem you from the grasp of the cruel."

Then
the word of the LORD came to me: 2
"You
must not marry and have sons or daughters in this place."
3
For
this is what the LORD says about the sons and daughters born in this
land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are
their fathers: 4
"They
will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but
will be like refuse lying on the ground. They will perish by sword
and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds of
the air and the beasts of the earth."
5
For
this is what the LORD says: "Do
not enter a house where there is a funeral meal; do not go to mourn
or show sympathy, because I have withdrawn my blessing, my love and
my pity from this people,"
declares the LORD. 6
"Both
high and low will die in this land. They will not be buried or
mourned, and no one will cut himself or shave his head for them.
7
No
one will offer food to comfort those who mourn for the dead--not even
for a father or a mother--nor will anyone give them a drink to
console them.
8
"And
do not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down to eat and
drink. 9 For
this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Before your
eyes and in your days I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and
gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in this place.
10
"When
you tell these people all this and they ask you, `Why has the LORD
decreed such a great disaster against us? What wrong have we done?
What sin have we committed against the LORD our God?'
11
then
say to them, `It is because your fathers forsook me,'
declares the LORD, `and
followed other gods and served and worshiped them. They forsook me
and did not keep my law. 12
But you have behaved more wickedly than your fathers. See how each of
you is following the stubbornness of his evil heart instead of
obeying me. 13
So I will throw you out of this 17land
into a land neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you
will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.'
14
"However,
the days are coming,"
declares the LORD, "when
men will no longer say, `As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the
Israelites up out of Egypt,'
15
but they will say, `As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the
Israelites up out of the land of the north and out of all the
countries where he had banished them.' For I will restore them to the
land I gave their forefathers. 18

TESTAMENT: 1 THESSALONIANS 2:9 - 3:13

Surely
you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and
day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the
gospel of God to you.
10
You
are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we
were among you who believed. 11
For
you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his
own children, 12
encouraging,
comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you
into his kingdom and glory.
13
And
we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of
God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men,
but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who
believe. 14
For
you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Judea, which are
in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own countrymen the same
things those churches suffered from the Jews, 15
who
killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They
displease God and are hostile to all men 16
in
their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they
may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the
limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last. A
17
But,
brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in
person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every
effort to see you. 18
For
we wanted to come to you--certainly I, Paul, did, again and
again--but Satan stopped us. 19
For
what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the
presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20
Indeed,
you are our glory and joy.

So
when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by
ourselves in Athens. 2
We
sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker A
in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in
your faith, 3
so
that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well
that we were destined for them. 4
In
fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be
persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. 5
For
this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out
about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might
have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.
6
But
Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news
about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have
pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also
long to see you. 7
Therefore,
brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged
about you because of your faith. 8
For
now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. 9
How
can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in
the presence of our God because of you? 10
Night
and day we pray most earnestly that we may 19
see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
11
Now
may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for
us to come to you. 12
May
the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for
everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13
May
he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in
the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all
his holy ones. 20
