The
LORD is my light and my salvation--
whom
shall I fear?
The
LORD is the stronghold of my life--
of
whom shall I be afraid?

When
evil men advance against me
to
devour my flesh, A
when
my enemies and my foes attack me,
they
will stumble and fall.
3
Though
an army besiege me,
my
heart will not fear;
though
war break out against me,
even
then will I be confident.
4
One
thing I ask of the LORD,
this
is what I seek:
that
I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all
the days of my life,
to
gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and
to seek him in his temple.
5
For
in the day of trouble
he
will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he
will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and
set me high upon a rock.

Then
my head will be exalted
above
the enemies who surround me;
at
his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;

things are said of you,

and Babylon

of Zion it will be said,
"This
one and that one were born in her,

Do not boast about tomorrow,
for
you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2
Let
another praise you, and not your own mouth;
someone
else, and not your own lips.
3
Stone
is heavy and sand a burden,
but
provocation by a fool is heavier than both.
4
Anger
is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but
who can stand before jealousy?
5
Better
is open rebuke
than
hidden love.
6
Wounds
from a friend can be trusted,
but
an enemy multiplies kisses.
7
He
who is full loathes honey,
but
to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8
Like
a bird that strays from its nest
is
a man who strays from his home.
9
Perfume
and incense bring joy to the heart,
and
the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.

Do
not forsake your friend and the friend of your father,
and
do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes you--
better
a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.

wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;

who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,

and Destruction A
are never satisfied,

neither are the eyes of man.

The
crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,

man is tested by the praise he receives.

you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding
him like grain with a pestle,

Be
sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give
careful attention to your herds;

riches do not endure forever,
and
a crown is not secure for all generations.

When
the hay is removed and new growth appears
and
the grass from the hills is gathered in,

the
lambs will provide you with clothing,
and
the goats with the price of a field.

You
will have plenty of goats' milk
to
feed you and your family

1
In
the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the
reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur,
who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD in the
presence of the priests and all the people: 2
"This
is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: `I will break the
yoke of the king of Babylon. 3
Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of
the LORD's house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from
here and took to Babylon. 4
I will also bring back to this place Jehoiachin A
son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles from Judah
who went to Babylon,' declares the LORD, `for I will break the yoke
of the king of Babylon.'
"
5
Then
the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the
priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the
LORD. 6
He
said, "Amen! May the LORD do so! May the LORD fulfill the words
you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the LORD's house and
all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.
7
Nevertheless,
listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of
all the people: 8
From
early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war,
disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. 9
But
the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent
by the LORD only if his prediction comes true."
10
Then
the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of the prophet
Jeremiah and broke it, 11
and
he said before all the people, "This
is what the LORD says: `In the same way will I break the yoke of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations within
two years.'"
At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.
12
Shortly
after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the
prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 13
"Go
and tell Hananiah, `This is what the LORD says: You have broken a
wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron. 14
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will put
an iron yoke on the necks of all these nations to make them serve
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I will even
give him control over the wild animals.'"
15
Then
the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, "Listen,
Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, yet you have persuaded this
nation to trust in lies. 16
Therefore,
this is what the LORD says: `I
am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you
are going to die, because you have preached rebellion against the
LORD.'"
17
In
the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.

1
This
is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from
Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the
priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had
carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2
(This
was after King Jehoiachin A
and the queen mother, the court officials and the leaders of Judah
and Jerusalem, the craftsmen and the artisans had gone into exile
from Jerusalem.)
3
He
entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of
Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in 11
Babylon. It said:
4
This
is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I
carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5
"Build
houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6
Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give
your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and
daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7
Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have
carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it
prospers, you too will prosper."
8
Yes,
this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Do
not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not
listen to the dreams you encourage them to have.
9
They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,"
declares the LORD.
10
This
is what the LORD says: "When
seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and
fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place. 11
For I know the plans I have for you,"
declares the LORD, "plans
to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a
future. 12
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen
to you. 13
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
14
I will be found by you,"
declares the LORD, "and
will bring you back from captivity. B
I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have
banished you,"
declares the LORD, "and
will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into
exile."
15
You
may say, "The LORD has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,"
16
but
this is what the LORD says about the king who sits on David's throne
and all the people who remain in this city, your countrymen who did
not go with you into exile—17
yes,
this is what the LORD Almighty says: "I
will send the sword, famine and plague against them and I will make
them like poor figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18
I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make
them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth and an object of
cursing and horror, of scorn and reproach, among all the nations
where I drive them. 19
For they have not listened to my words,"
declares the LORD, "words
that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets. And
you exiles have not listened either,"
declares the LORD.
20
Therefore,
hear the word of the LORD, all you exiles whom I have sent away from
Jerusalem to Babylon. 21
This
is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of
Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you
in my name: "I
will hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will
put them to death before your very eyes. 22
Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will
use this curse: `The LORD treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the
king of Babylon burned in the fire.' 23
For they 12
have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery
with their neighbors' wives and in my name have spoken lies, which I
did not tell them to do. I know it and am a witness to it,"
declares the LORD.
24
Tell
Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25
"This
is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel,
says: You
sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to
Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the other priests.
You said to Zephaniah, 26
`The LORD has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in
charge of the house of the LORD; you should put any madman who acts
like a prophet into the stocks and neck-irons. 27
So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as
a prophet among you?
28
He has sent this message to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.
Therefore build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what
they produce.'
"
29
Zephaniah
the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30
Then
the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 31
"Send
this message to all the exiles: `This is what the LORD says about
Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even
though I did not send him, and has led you to believe a lie,
32
this is what the LORD says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the
Nehelamite and his descendants. He will have no one left among this
people, nor will he see the good things I will do for my people,
declares the LORD, because he has preached rebellion against me.'"

1
Paul,
an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of
Christ Jesus our hope,
2
To
Timothy my true son in the faith:
Grace,
mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3
As
I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that
you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4
nor
to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote
controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith. 5
The
goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a
good conscience and a sincere faith. 6
Some
have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. 7
They
want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are
talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
8
We
know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9
We
also know that law A
is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the
ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill
their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10
for
adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and
perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11
that
conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he
entrusted to me.
12
I
thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he
considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13
Even
though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I
was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14
The
grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the
faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15
Here
is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus
came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. 16
But
for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of
sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an
example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
17
Now
to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and
glory for ever and ever. Amen.
18
Timothy,
my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies
once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good
fight, 19
holding
on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so
have shipwrecked their faith. 20
Among
them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to
be taught not to blaspheme. 14
