are they who maintain justice,

Remember
me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people,
come
to my aid when you save them,

I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,

I may share in the joy of your nation

join your inheritance in giving praise.

We
have sinned, even as our fathers did;

forgot the God who saved them,

had done great things in Egypt,

miracles
in the land of Ham
and
awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

So
he said he would destroy them--
had
not Moses, his chosen one,
stood
in the breach before him
to
keep his wrath from destroying them.

Then
they despised the pleasant land;
they
did not believe his promise.

They
grumbled in their tents
and
did not obey the LORD.

So
he swore to them with uplifted hand
that
he would make them fall in the desert,
27
make
their descendants fall among the nations 7
and
scatter them throughout the lands.

They
yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor
and
ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29
they
provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds,
and
a plague broke out among them.

But
Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and
the plague was checked.

This
was credited to him as righteousness
for
endless generations to come.

By
the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD,
and
trouble came to Moses because of them;

for
they rebelled against the Spirit of God,
and
rash words came from Moses' lips. C

did not destroy the peoples
as
the LORD had commanded them,

but
they mingled with the nations
and
adopted their customs.

They
worshiped their idols,
which
became a snare to them.

To man belong the plans of the heart,

from the LORD comes the reply of the tongue.

a man's ways seem innocent to him,

motives are weighed by the LORD.

Commit
to the LORD whatever you do,

your plans will succeed.

The
LORD works out everything for his own ends--
even
the wicked for a day of disaster.

The
LORD detests all the proud of heart.
Be
sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Through
love and faithfulness sin is atoned for;
through
the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil.

When
a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD,

"If
men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth
prematurely E
but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever
the woman's husband demands and the court allows.
23
But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24
eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25
burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
26
"If
a man hits a manservant or maidservant in the eye and destroys it, he
must let the servant go free to compensate for the eye.
27
And if he knocks out the tooth of a manservant or maidservant, he
must let the servant go free to compensate for the tooth.
28
"If
a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull must be stoned to
death, and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the bull will
not be held responsible.
29
If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has
been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or
woman, the bull must be stoned and the owner also must be put to
death.
30
However, if payment is demanded of him, he may redeem his life by
paying whatever is demanded.
31
This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter.
32
If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty
shekels F
of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull must be stoned.
33
"If
a man uncovers a pit or digs one and fails to cover it and an ox or a
donkey falls into it, 34
the owner of the pit must pay for the loss;
he must pay its owner, and the dead animal will be his.
35
"If
a man's bull injures the bull of another and it dies, they are to
sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal
equally.
36
However,
if it was known that the bull had the habit of 15
goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up, the owner must pay,
animal for animal, and the dead animal will be his.

a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he must
pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

"If
a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the
defender is not guilty of bloodshed; 3

after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed.
"A
thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he must
be sold to pay for his theft.

"If
the stolen animal is found alive in his possession--whether ox or
donkey or sheep--he must pay back double.

"If
a man grazes his livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray
and they graze in another man's field, he must make restitution from
the best of his own field or vineyard.

"If
a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns
shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who
started the fire must make restitution.

"If
a man gives his neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping and they are
stolen from the neighbor's house, the thief, if he is caught, must
pay back double. 8
But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear
before the judges B
to determine

whether
he has laid his hands on the other man's property.

In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a
garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says,
`This
is mine,'
both parties are to bring their cases before the judges.
The one whom the judges declare C
guilty must pay back double to his neighbor.

"If
a man gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to his
neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away
while no one is looking,

the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath
before the LORD that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other
person's property.
The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required.
12
But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, he must make
restitution to the owner.
13
If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, he shall bring in the
remains as evidence and he will not be required to pay for the torn
animal.
14
"If
a man borrows an animal from his neighbor and it is injured or dies
while the owner is not present, he must make restitution.
15
But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to
pay.
If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss.
16
"If
a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps
with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.
17
If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still
pay the bride-price for virgins.

"Do
not allow a sorceress to live.

"Whoever
sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

"Do
not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.
22
"Do
not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.
23
If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
24
My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword;
your
wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

"If
you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be
like a moneylender; charge him no interest.

you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, return it to him by

because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body.

not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the
words of the righteous.

yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in
Egypt.

six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops,

but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.
Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild
animals may eat what they leave.
Do
the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your
ox and your donkey may rest and the slave born in your household, and
the alien as well, may be refreshed.

careful to do everything I have said to you.

Jesus
left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to
him to call his attention to its buildings. 2

you see all these things?"
he asked. "I
tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every
one will be thrown down."

As
Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him
privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this
happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of
the age?"

Jesus
answered: "Watch
out that no one deceives you.
5
For
many will come in my name, claiming,
`I
am the Christ,

and will deceive many.
6
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are
not alarmed.
Such
things must happen, but the end is still to come.

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

All these are the beginning of birth pains.

"Then
you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you
will be hated by all nations because of me.

At
that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate
each other,

and
many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12
Because
of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13
but
he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

And
this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a
testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

"So
when you see standing in the holy place `the
abomination that causes desolation,'

spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand—

then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

Let
no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the
house.

Let
no one in the field go back to get his cloak.

How
dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing
mothers!
20
Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the
Sabbath.
21
For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning
of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.

If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for
the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.

At that time if anyone says to you,
`Look,
here is the Christ!'
or,
`There
he is!'
do
not believe it.
24
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great
signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible.

See,
I have told you ahead of time.

"So
if anyone tells you,
`There
he is, out in the desert,'
do
not go out;
or,
`Here
he is, in the inner rooms,'
do not believe it.
27
For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the
west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
