PSALMS: 4

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

¹Answer me when I call to you,

O my righteous God.

Give me relief from my distress;

be merciful to me and hear my prayer.

²How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame ^A?

How long will you love delusions and seek false gods ^B?

Selah

³Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;

the LORD will hear when I call to him.

⁴In your anger do not sin;

when you are on your beds,

search your hearts and be silent.

Selah

⁵Offer right sacrifices

and trust in the LORD.

⁶Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?"

Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.

⁷You have filled my heart with greater joy

than when their grain and new wine abound.

⁸I will lie down and sleep in peace,

for you alone, O LORD,

make me dwell in safety. ¹

PSALMS: 34

Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he left.

¹I ^A will extol the LORD at all times;

his praise will always be on my lips.

²My soul will boast in the LORD;

let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

³Glorify the LORD with me;

let us exalt his name together.

⁴I sought the LORD, and he answered me;

he delivered me from all my fears.

⁵Those who look to him are radiant;

their faces are never covered with shame.

⁶This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;

he saved him out of all his troubles.

⁷The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,

and he delivers them.

⁸Taste and see that the LORD is good;

blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

⁹Fear the LORD, you his saints,

for those who fear him lack nothing.

¹⁰The lions may grow weak and hungry,

but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

¹¹Come, my children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

¹²Whoever of you loves life

and desires to see many good days, ²

¹³keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking lies.

¹⁴Turn from evil and do good;

seek peace and pursue it.

¹⁵The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous

and his ears are attentive to their cry;

¹⁶the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,

to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

¹⁷The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

¹⁸The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

¹⁹A righteous man may have many troubles,

but the LORD delivers him from them all;

²⁰he protects all his bones,

not one of them will be broken.

²¹Evil will slay the wicked;

the foes of the righteous will be condemned.

²²The LORD redeems his servants;

no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him. ³

PSALMS: 64

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

¹Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint;

protect my life from the threat of the enemy.

²Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked,

from that noisy crowd of evildoers.

³They sharpen their tongues like swords

and aim their words like deadly arrows.

⁴They shoot from ambush at the innocent man;

they shoot at him suddenly, without fear.

⁵They encourage each other in evil plans,

they talk about hiding their snares;

they say, "Who will see them ^A?"

⁶They plot injustice and say,

"We have devised a perfect plan!"

Surely the mind and heart of man are cunning.

⁷But God will shoot them with arrows;

suddenly they will be struck down.

⁸He will turn their own tongues against them

and bring them to ruin;

all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.

⁹All mankind will fear;

they will proclaim the works of God

and ponder what he has done.

¹⁰Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD

and take refuge in him;

let all the upright in heart praise him!⁴

PSALMS: 94

¹O LORD, the God who avenges,

O God who avenges, shine forth.

²Rise up, O Judge of the earth;

pay back to the proud what they deserve.

³How long will the wicked, O LORD,

how long will the wicked be jubilant?

⁴They pour out arrogant words;

all the evildoers are full of boasting.

⁵They crush your people, O LORD;

they oppress your inheritance.

⁶They slay the widow and the alien;

they murder the fatherless.

⁷They say, "The LORD does not see;

the God of Jacob pays no heed."

⁸Take heed, you senseless ones among the people;

you fools, when will you become wise?

⁹Does he who implanted the ear not hear?

Does he who formed the eye not see?

¹⁰Does he who disciplines nations not punish?

Does he who teaches man lack knowledge?

¹¹The LORD knows the thoughts of man;

he knows that they are futile.

¹²Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD,

the man you teach from your law;

¹³you grant him relief from days of trouble,

till a pit is dug for the wicked.

¹⁴For the LORD will not reject his people;

he will never forsake his inheritance.

¹⁵Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,

and all the upright in heart will follow it. ⁵

¹⁶Who will rise up for me against the wicked?

Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?

¹⁷Unless the LORD had given me help,

I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.

¹⁸When I said, "My foot is slipping,"

your love, O LORD, supported me.

¹⁹When anxiety was great within me,

your consolation brought joy to my soul.

²⁰Can a corrupt throne be allied with you--

one that brings on misery by its decrees?

²¹They band together against the righteous

and condemn the innocent to death.

²²But the LORD has become my fortress,

and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.

²³He will repay them for their sins

and destroy them for their wickedness;

the LORD our God will destroy them. ⁶

PSALMS: 124

A song of ascents. Of David.

¹If the LORD had not been on our side--

let Israel say--

²if the LORD had not been on our side

when men attacked us,

³when their anger flared against us,

they would have swallowed us alive;

⁴the flood would have engulfed us,

the torrent would have swept over us,

⁵the raging waters

would have swept us away.

⁶Praise be to the LORD,

who has not let us be torn by their teeth.

⁷We have escaped like a bird

out of the fowler's snare;

the snare has been broken,

and we have escaped.

⁸Our help is in the name of the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth. ⁷

PROVERBS: 4

4 ¹ Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction;

pay attention and gain understanding.

²I give you sound learning,

so do not forsake my teaching.

³When I was a boy in my father's house,

still tender, and an only child of my mother,

⁴he taught me and said,

"Lay hold of my words with all your heart;

keep my commands and you will live.

⁵Get wisdom, get understanding;

do not forget my words or swerve from them.

⁶Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;

love her, and she will watch over you.

⁷Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.

Though it cost all you have, ^A get understanding.

⁸Esteem her, and she will exalt you;

embrace her, and she will honor you.

⁹She will set a garland of grace on your head

and present you with a crown of splendor."

¹⁰Listen, my son, accept what I say,

and the years of your life will be many.

¹¹I guide you in the way of wisdom

and lead you along straight paths.

¹²When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;

when you run, you will not stumble.

¹³Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;

guard it well, for it is your life.

¹⁴Do not set foot on the path of the wicked

or walk in the way of evil men.

¹⁵Avoid it, do not travel on it;

turn from it and go on your way.

¹⁶For they cannot sleep till they do evil; ⁸

they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.

¹⁷They eat the bread of wickedness

and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁸The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,

shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

¹⁹But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;

they do not know what makes them stumble.

²⁰My son, pay attention to what I say;

listen closely to my words.

²¹Do not let them out of your sight,

keep them within your heart;

²²for they are life to those who find them

and health to a man's whole body.

²³Above all else, guard your heart,

for it is the wellspring of life.

²⁴Put away perversity from your mouth;

keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

²⁵Let your eyes look straight ahead,

fix your gaze directly before you.

²⁶Make level ^B paths for your feet

and take only ways that are firm.

²⁷Do not swerve to the right or the left;

keep your foot from evil. ⁹

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 48:1 - 49:33

48 ¹Some time later Joseph was told, "Your father is ill." So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him. ²When Jacob was told, "Your son Joseph has come to you," Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

³Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty ^A appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me ⁴and said to me, `I am going to make you fruitful and will increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.'

⁵"Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine. ⁶Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. ⁷As I was returning from Paddan, ^B to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath" (that is, Bethlehem).

⁸When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, "Who are these?"

⁹"They are the sons God has given me here," Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, "Bring them to me so I may bless them."

¹⁰Now Israel's eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.

¹¹Israel said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too."

¹²Then Joseph removed them from Israel's knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. ¹³And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel's left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel's right hand, and brought them close to him.

¹⁴But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim's head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh's head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

¹⁵Then he blessed Joseph and said,

"May the God before whom my fathers

Abraham and Isaac walked,

the God who has been my shepherd

all my life to this day, ¹⁶the Angel who has delivered me from all harm

--may he bless these boys. ¹⁰

May they be called by my name

and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,

and may they increase greatly

upon the earth."

¹⁷When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim's head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. ¹⁸Joseph said to him, "No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."

¹⁹But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations." ²⁰He blessed them that day and said,

"In your ^C name will Israel pronounce this blessing:

`May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.'"

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

²¹Then Israel said to Joseph, "I am about to die, but God will be with you ^D and take you ^E back to the land of your ^F fathers. ²²And to you, as one who is over your brothers, I give the ridge of land ^G I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow."

49 ¹Then Jacob called for his sons and said: "Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come. ²"Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;

listen to your father Israel.

³"Reuben, you are my firstborn,

my might, the first sign of my strength,

excelling in honor, excelling in power. ⁴Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,

for you went up onto your father's bed,

onto my couch and defiled it.

⁵"Simeon and Levi are brothers--

their swords ^A are weapons of violence. ¹¹

⁶Let me not enter their council,

let me not join their assembly,

for they have killed men in their anger

and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. ⁷Cursed be their anger, so fierce,

and their fury, so cruel!

I will scatter them in Jacob

and disperse them in Israel.

⁸"Judah, ^B your brothers will praise you;

your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;

your father's sons will bow down to you. ⁹You are a lion's cub, O Judah;

you return from the prey, my son.

Like a lion he crouches and lies down,

like a lioness--who dares to rouse him? ¹⁰The scepter will not depart from Judah,

nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,

until he comes to whom it belongs ^C

and the obedience of the nations is his. ¹¹He will tether his donkey to a vine,

his colt to the choicest branch;

he will wash his garments in wine,

his robes in the blood of grapes. ¹²His eyes will be darker than wine,

his teeth whiter than milk. ^D

¹³"Zebulun will live by the seashore

and become a haven for ships;

his border will extend toward Sidon.

¹⁴"Issachar is a rawboned ^E donkey

lying down between two saddlebags. ^F ¹⁵When he sees how good is his resting place

and how pleasant is his land, ¹²

he will bend his shoulder to the burden

and submit to forced labor.

¹⁶"Dan ^G will provide justice for his people

as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷Dan will be a serpent by the roadside,

a viper along the path,

that bites the horse's heels

so that its rider tumbles backward.

¹⁸"I look for your deliverance, O LORD.

¹⁹"Gad ^H will be attacked by a band of raiders,

but he will attack them at their heels.

²⁰"Asher's food will be rich;

he will provide delicacies fit for a king.

²¹"Naphtali is a doe set free

that bears beautiful fawns. ^I

²²"Joseph is a fruitful vine,

a fruitful vine near a spring,

whose branches climb over a wall. ^J ²³With bitterness archers attacked him;

they shot at him with hostility. ²⁴But his bow remained steady,

his strong arms stayed ^K limber,

because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,

because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, ²⁵because of your father's God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, ^L who blesses you

with blessings of the heavens above,

blessings of the deep that lies below,

blessings of the breast and womb. ²⁶Your father's blessings are greater

than the blessings of the ancient mountains, ¹³

than ^M the bounty of the age-old hills.

Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,

on the brow of the prince among ^N his brothers.

²⁷"Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;

in the morning he devours the prey,

in the evening he divides the plunder."

²⁸All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.

²⁹Then he gave them these instructions: "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite, along with the field. ³¹There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.

³²The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites. ^O"

³³When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people. ¹⁴

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 15:29 - 16:12

²⁹Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. ³⁰Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. ³¹The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.

³²Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."

³³His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"

³⁴"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked.

"Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."

³⁵He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. ³⁶Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. ³⁷They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. ³⁸The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. ³⁹After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

16 ¹The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

²He replied, ^A "When evening comes, you say, `It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' ³ and in the morning, `Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. ⁴ A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.

⁵When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. ⁶"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

⁷They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."

⁸Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? ⁹ Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ¹⁰ Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ¹¹ How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." ¹²Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. ¹⁵

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
