soul finds rest in God alone;

you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD;
I
sing for joy at the works of your hands.

How
great are your works, O LORD,

The
senseless man does not know,
fools

though the wicked spring up like grass
and
all evildoers flourish,
they

rejoiced with those who said to me,
"Let
us go to the house of the LORD."

Our
feet are standing
in
your gates, O Jerusalem.
3
Jerusalem
is built like a city
that
is closely compacted together.
4
That
is where the tribes go up,
the
tribes of the LORD,
to
praise the name of the LORD
according
to the statute given to Israel.
5
There
the thrones for judgment stand,
the
thrones of the house of David.
6
Pray
for the peace of Jerusalem:
"May
those who love you be secure.
7
May
there be peace within your walls
and
security within your citadels."
8
For
the sake of my brothers and friends,
I
will say,
"Peace
be within you."

For
the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I

My son, if you accept my words
and
store up my commands within you,
2
turning
your ear to wisdom
and
applying your heart to understanding,
3
and
if you call out for insight
and
cry aloud for understanding,
4
and
if you look for it as for silver
and
search for it as for hidden treasure,
5
then
you will understand the fear of the LORD
and
find the knowledge of God.
6
For
the LORD gives wisdom,
and
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7
He
holds victory in store for the upright,
he
is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8
for
he guards the course of the just
and
protects the way of his faithful ones.
9
Then
you will understand what is right and just
and
fair--every good path.
10
For
wisdom will enter your heart,
and
knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11
Discretion
will protect you,
and
understanding will guard you.
12
Wisdom
will save you from the ways of wicked men,
from
men whose words are perverse,

who
leave the straight paths
to
walk in dark ways,

who
delight in doing wrong
and
rejoice in the perverseness of evil,

whose
paths are crooked
and
who are devious in their ways.

It
will save you also from the adulteress,
from

her house leads down to death

Now
Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: "Fill
the men's sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each
man's silver in the mouth of his sack. 2
Then
put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack,
along with the silver for his grain." And he did as Joseph said.
3
As
morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys. 4
They
had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, "Go
after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to
them, `Why have you repaid good with evil?
5
Isn't
this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This
is a wicked thing you have done.' "
6
When
he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7
But
they said to him, "Why does my lord say such things? Far be it
from your servants to do anything like that! 8
We
even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found
inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold
from your master's house? 9
If
any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest
of us will become my lord's slaves."
10
"Very
well, then," he said, "let it be as you say. Whoever is
found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free
from blame."
11
Each
of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12
Then
the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending
with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. 13
At
this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and
returned to the city.
14
Joseph
was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they
threw themselves to the ground before him. 15
Joseph
said to them, "What is this you have done? Don't you know that a
man like me can find things out by divination?"
16
"What
can we say to my lord?" Judah replied. "What can we say?
How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants'
guilt. We are now my lord's slaves--we ourselves and the one who was
found to have the cup."
17
But
Joseph said, "Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man
who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you,
go back to your father in peace."
18
Then
Judah went up to him and said: "Please, my lord, let your
servant speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant,
though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19
My
lord asked his servants, `Do you have a father or a brother?' 20
And
we answered, `We have an aged father, and there is a young son born
to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of
his mother's sons left, and his father loves him.'
21
"Then
you said to your servants, `Bring him down to me so I can see him for
myself.'
22
And
we said to my lord, `The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves
him, his father will die.' 23
But
you told your servants, `Unless your youngest brother comes down with
you, you will not see 11my
face again.' 24
When
we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had
said.
25
"Then
our father said, `Go back and buy a little more food.' 26
But
we said, `We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us
will we go. We cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother
is with us.'
27
"Your
servant my father said to us, `You know that my wife bore me two
sons.
28
One
of them went away from me, and I said, "He has surely been torn
to pieces." And I have not seen him since. 29
If
you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring
my gray head down to the grave A
in misery.'
30
"So
now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my
father and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the
boy's life, 31
sees
that the boy isn't there, he will die. Your servants will bring the
gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. 32
Your
servant guaranteed the boy's safety to my father. I said, `If I do
not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my
father, all my life!'
33
"Now
then, please let your servant remain here as my lord's slave in place
of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. 34
How
can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let
me see the misery that would come upon my father."

Then
Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and
he cried out, "Have everyone leave my presence!" So there
was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. 2
And
he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh's
household heard about it.
3
Joseph
said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still living?"
But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were
terrified at his presence.
4
Then
Joseph said to his brothers, "Come close to me." When they
had done so, he said, "I am your brother Joseph, the one you
sold into Egypt! 5
And
now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for
selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead
of you. 6
For
two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next
five years there will not be plowing and reaping. 7
But
God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and
to save your lives by a great deliverance. A
8
"So
then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to
Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. 9
Now
hurry back to my father and say to him, `This is what your son Joseph
says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don't 12
delay. 10
You
shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me--you, your children
and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.
11
I
will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to
come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will
become destitute.'
12
"You
can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is
really I who am speaking to you. 13
Tell
my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about
everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly."
14
Then
he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin
embraced him, weeping. 15
And
he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers
talked with him.
16
When
the news reached Pharaoh's palace that Joseph's brothers had come,
Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. 17
Pharaoh
said to Joseph, "Tell your brothers, `Do this: Load your animals
and return to the land of Canaan, 18
and
bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the
best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.'
19
"You
are also directed to tell them, `Do this: Take some carts from Egypt
for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. 20
Never
mind about your belongings, because the best of all Egypt will be
yours.' "
21
So
the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had
commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. 22
To
each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three
hundred shekels B
of silver and five sets of clothes. 23
And
this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the best
things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread
and other provisions for his journey. 24
Then
he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them,
"Don't quarrel on the way!"
25
So
they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land
of Canaan.
26
They
told him, "Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all
Egypt." Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them. 27
But
when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he
saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their
father Jacob revived. 28
And
Israel said, "I'm convinced! My son Joseph is still alive. I
will go and see him before I die." 13
NEW
TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 14:13 - 36
13
When
Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a
solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from
the towns. 14
When
Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and
healed their sick.
15
As
evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is
a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away,
so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
16
Jesus
replied, "They
do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
17
"We
have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they
answered.
18
"Bring
them here to me,"
he said. 19
And
he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five
loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and
broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the
disciples gave them to the people. 20
They
all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve
basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21
The
number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women
and children.
22
Immediately
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to
the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23
After
he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to
pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24
but
the boat was already a considerable distance A
from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25
During
the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the
lake.
26
When
the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's
a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27
But
Jesus immediately said to them: "Take
courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
28
"Lord,
if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the
water."
29
"Come,"
he said.
Then
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward
Jesus.
30
But
when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried
out, "Lord, save me!"
31
Immediately
Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You
of little faith,"
he said, "why
did you doubt?"
32
And
when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33
Then
those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are
the Son of God."
34
When
they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35
And
when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all
the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36
and
begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all
who touched him were healed. 14
