me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people,

have sinned, even as our fathers did;

Horeb they made a calf

worshiped an idol cast from metal.

exchanged their Glory
for
an image of a bull, which eats grass.

They
forgot the God who saved them,
who
had done great things in Egypt,

miracles
in the land of Ham
and
awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

So
he said he would destroy them--
had
not Moses, his chosen one,
stood
in the breach before him
to
keep his wrath from destroying them.
24
Then
they despised the pleasant land;
they
did not believe his promise.
25
They
grumbled in their tents
and
did not obey the LORD.
26
So
he swore to them with uplifted hand
that
he would make them fall in the desert,
27
make
their descendants fall among the nations 7
and
scatter them throughout the lands.
28
They
yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor
and
ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29
they
provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds,
and
a plague broke out among them.
30
But
Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and
the plague was checked.
31
This
was credited to him as righteousness
for
endless generations to come.
32
By
the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD,
and
trouble came to Moses because of them;
33
for
they rebelled against the Spirit of God,
and
rash words came from Moses' lips. C

They
did not destroy the peoples
as
the LORD had commanded them,
35
but
they mingled with the nations
and
adopted their customs.

They
worshiped their idols,
which
became a snare to them.

They
sacrificed their sons
and
their daughters to demons.

They
shed innocent blood,

blood of their sons and daughters,
whom
they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,

the land was desecrated by their blood.

defiled themselves by what they did;
by

the LORD was angry with his people

handed them over to the nations,

enemies oppressed them

Many
times he delivered them,

he took note of their distress

To man belong the plans of the heart,
but
from the LORD comes the reply of the tongue.

a man's ways seem innocent to him,
but
motives are weighed by the LORD.

Commit
to the LORD whatever you do,
and
your plans will succeed.

The
LORD works out everything for his own ends--
even
the wicked for a day of disaster.

The
LORD detests all the proud of heart.
Be
sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Through
love and faithfulness sin is atoned for;
through
the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil.

When
a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD,
he

In
the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word
of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus
king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and to put
it in writing:

"This
is what Cyrus king of Persia says:
"`The
LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth
and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in
Judah. 3
Anyone
of his people among you--may his God be with him, and let him go up
to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the LORD, the God of
Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem. 4
And
the people of any place where survivors may now be living are to
provide him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with
freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.'"
5
Then
the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and
Levites--everyone whose heart God had moved--prepared to go up and
build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. 6
All
their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with
goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the
freewill offerings.
7
Moreover,
King Cyrus brought out the articles belonging to the temple of the
LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and had
placed in the temple of his god. A

counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.

For
the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19
For
it is written:
"I
will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the
intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

Where
is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of
this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21
For
since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know
him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to
save those who believe. 22
Jews
demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23
but
we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness
to Gentiles, 24
but
to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power
of God and the wisdom of God. 25
For
the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness
of God is stronger than man's strength.

Brothers,
think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were
wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of
noble birth. 27
But
God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God
chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28
He
chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the
things that are not--to nullify the things that are, 29
so
that no one may boast before him. 30
It
is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us
wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and 21
redemption. 31
Therefore,
as it is written: "Let
him who boasts boast in the Lord."

wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. A
