1
Do not envy wicked men,
do
not desire their company;
2
for
their hearts plot violence,
and
their lips talk about making trouble.
3
By
wisdom a house is built,
and
through understanding it is established;
4
through
knowledge its rooms are filled
with
rare and beautiful treasures.
5
A
wise man has great power,
and
a man of knowledge increases strength;
6
for
waging war you need guidance,
and
for victory many advisers.
7
Wisdom
is too high for a fool;
in
the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.
8
He
who plots evil
will
be known as a schemer.
9
The
schemes of folly are sin,
and
men detest a mocker.
10
If
you falter in times of trouble,
how
small is your strength!
11
Rescue
those being led away to death;
hold
back those staggering toward slaughter.
12
If
you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does
not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does
not he who guards your life know it?
Will
he not repay each person according to what he has done? 9

Eat
honey, my son, for it is good;
honey
from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14
Know
also that wisdom is sweet to your soul;
if
you find it, there is a future hope for you,
and
your hope will not be cut off.

Do
not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's house,
do
not raid his dwelling place;
16
for
though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again,
but
the wicked are brought down by calamity.
17
Do
not gloat when your enemy falls;
when
he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18
or
the LORD will see and disapprove
and
turn his wrath away from him.
19
Do
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of the wicked,
20
for
the evil man has no future hope,
and
the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21
Fear
the LORD and the king, my son,
and
do not join with the rebellious,
22
for
those two will send sudden destruction upon them,
and
who knows what calamities they can bring?
23
These
also are sayings of the wise:
To
show partiality in judging is not good:
24
Whoever
says to the guilty, "You are innocent"--
peoples
will curse him and nations denounce him.
25
But
it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and
rich blessing will come upon them. 10

An
honest answer
is
like a kiss on the lips.
27
Finish
your outdoor work
and
get your fields ready;
after
that, build your house.
28
Do
not testify against your neighbor without cause,
or
use your lips to deceive.

Do
not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me;

pay that man back for what he did."

I
went past the field of the sluggard,
past
the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment;

thorns
had come up everywhere,

ground was covered with weeds,
and
the stone wall was in ruins.

I
applied my heart to what I observed
and
learned a lesson from what I saw:

A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--

poverty will come on you like a bandit

NEHEMIAH 5:14 - 7:36a

Moreover,
from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to
be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second
year--twelve years--neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted
to the governor. 15
But
the earlier governors--those preceding me--placed a heavy burden on
the people and took forty shekels A
of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants
also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did
not act like that. 16
Instead,
I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled
there for the work; we B
did not acquire any land.
17
Furthermore,
a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as
those who came to us from the surrounding nations. 18
Each
day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me,
and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite
of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor,
because the demands were heavy on these people.
19
Remember
me with favor, O my God, for all I have done for these people.

When
word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our
enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in
it--though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—2
Sanballat
and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us meet together in
one of the villages A
on the plain of Ono."
But
they were scheming to harm me; 3
so
I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am carrying on a
great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I
leave it and go down to you?" 4
Four
times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the
same answer.
5
Then,
the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message,
and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6
in
which was written:
"It
is reported among the nations--and Geshem B
says it is true--that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and
therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these
reports you are about to become their king 7
and
have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in
Jerusalem: `There is a king in Judah!' Now this report will get back
to the king; so come, let us confer together."
8
I
sent him this reply: "Nothing like what you are saying is
happening; you are just making it up out of your head."
9
They
were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get
too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." 12
But I prayed, "Now strengthen my hands."
10
One
day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of
Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, "Let us meet in
the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple
doors, because men are coming to kill you--by night they are coming
to kill you."
11
But
I said, "Should a man like me run away? Or should one like me go
into the temple to save his life? I will not go!" 12
I
realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied
against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13
He
had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing
this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
14
Remember
Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of what they have done;
remember also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who
have been trying to intimidate me.
15
So
the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two
days. 16
When
all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were
afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that
this work had been done with the help of our God.
17
Also,
in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to
Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18
For
many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to
Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter
of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19
Moreover,
they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I
said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

After
the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the
gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed. 2
I
put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along withA
Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of
integrity and feared God more than most men do. 3
I
said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until
the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them
shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as
guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses."
4
Now
the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and
the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 5
So
my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and
the common people for registration by families. I found the
genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This
is what I found written there: 13

are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the
exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they
returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, 7

1
Now
about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all possess
knowledge. A
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2
The
man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to
know. 3
But
the man who loves God is known by God.
4
So
then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is
nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. 5
For
even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as
indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6
yet
for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came
and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom all things came and through whom we live.
7
But
not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols
that when they eat such food they think of it as having been
sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is
defiled. 8
But
food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat,
and no better if we do.
9
Be
careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a
stumbling block to the weak. 10
For
if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge
eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has
been sacrificed to idols? 11
So
this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your
knowledge. 12
When
you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak
conscience, you sin against Christ. 13
Therefore,
if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat
meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. 16
