They

Will
the evildoers never learn--

how your enemies are astir,

cunning they conspire against your people;

the name of Israel be remembered no more."

With
one mind they plot together;

form an alliance against you--

the

my spirit grows faint within me;

When you sit to dine with a ruler,

put a knife to your throat
if
you are given to gluttony.

Do
not crave his delicacies,
for
that food is deceptive.

Do
not wear yourself out to get rich;
have
the wisdom to show restraint.

Cast
but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for
they will surely sprout wings
and
fly off to the sky like an eagle.

Do
not eat the food of a stingy man,
do
not crave his delicacies;

for
he is the kind of man
who

The
Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Col-Hozeh, ruler of the
district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its
doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Siloam, E
by the King's Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of
David. 16
Beyond
him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur,
made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs F
of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.
17
Next
to him, the repairs were made by the Levites under Rehum son of Bani.
Beside him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, carried
out repairs for his district.
18
Next
to him, the repairs were made by their countrymen under Binnui G
son of Henadad, ruler of the other half-district of Keilah. 19
Next
to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another
section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the
angle.
20
Next
to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from
the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest.
21
Next
to him, Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another
section, from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the end of it.
22
The
repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding
region.
23
Beyond
them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and
next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made
repairs beside his house.
24
Next
to him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from
Azariah's house to the angle and the corner, 25
and
Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting
from the upper palace near the court of the guard. Next to him,
Pedaiah son of Parosh 26
and
the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs up to a
point opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting
tower. 27
Next
to them, the men of Tekoa repaired another section, from the great
projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.
28
Above
the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own
house.
29
Next
to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to
him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made
repairs. 30
Next
to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of
Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of
Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31
Next
to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the
house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the
Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32
and
between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths
and merchants made repairs.

When
Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and
was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2
and
in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said,
"What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall?
Will they offer 11
sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back
to life from those heaps of rubble--burned as they are?"
3
Tobiah
the Ammonite, wwe are despised. Turn their insults back on their
own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5
Do
not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for
they have thrown insults in the face ofA
the builders.
6
So
we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the
people worked with all their heart.
7
But
when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of
Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem's walls had gone ahead and
that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. 8
They
all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up
trouble against it. 9
But
we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this
threat.
10
Meanwhile,
the people in Judah said, "The strength of the laborers is
giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the
wall."
11
Also
our enemies said, "Before they know it or see us, we will be
right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the
work."
12
Then
the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over,
"Wherever you turn, they will attack us."
13
Therefore
I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall
at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords,
spears and bows. 14
After
I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the
officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them.
Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your
brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."
15
When
our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had
frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to his own work. 12
NEW
TESTAMENT:
1 CORINTHIANS 7:25 - 40
25
Now
about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment
as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. 26
Because
of the present crisis, I think that it is good for you to remain as
you are. 27
Are
you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look
for a wife. 28
But
if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she
has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this
life, and I want to spare you this.
29
What
I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who
have wives should live as if they had none; 30
those
who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were
not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep;
31
those
who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For
this world in its present form is passing away.
32
I
would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned
about the Lord's affairs--how he can please the Lord. 33
But
a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world--how he
can please his wife—34
and
his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned
about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in
both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the
affairs of this world--how she can please her husband. 35
I
am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you
may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.
36
If
anyone thinks he is acting improperly toward the virgin he is engaged
to, and if she is getting along in years and he feels he ought to
marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get
married. 37
But
the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no
compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his
mind not to marry the virgin--this man also does the right thing. 38
So
then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry
her does even better. B
39
A
woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband
dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to
the Lord. 40
In
my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is--and I think that
I too have the Spirit of God. 13
