the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the
hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

love you, O LORD, my strength.
2
The
LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my
God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He
is my shield and the horn A
of my salvation, my stronghold.
3
I
call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and
I am saved from my enemies.
4
The
cords of death entangled me;
the
torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
5
The
cords of the grave B
coiled around me;
the
snares of death confronted me.

In
my distress I called to the LORD;
I
cried to my God for help.
From
his temple he heard my voice;
my
cry came before him, into his ears.

The
earth trembled and quaked,

reached down from on high and took hold of me;

drew me out of deep waters.

He
rescued me from my powerful enemy,

my foes, who were too strong for me.

They
confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but
the LORD was my support.

brought me out into a spacious place;
he
rescued me because he delighted in me.
20
The
LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according
to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.

For
I have kept the ways of the LORD;
I
have not done evil by turning from my God.

All
his laws are before me;

have not turned away from his decrees.

have been blameless before him

have kept myself from sin.

The
LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,

the city of our God, his holy mountain.

1
O
my people, hear my teaching;
listen
to the words of my mouth.
2
I
will open my mouth in parables,
I
will utter hidden things, things from of old--
3
what
we have heard and known,
what
our fathers have told us.
4
We
will not hide them from their children;
we
will tell the next generation
the
praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,
his
power, and the wonders he has done.
5
He
decreed statutes for Jacob
and
established the law in Israel,
which
he commanded our forefathers
to
teach their children,
6
so
the next generation would know them,
even
the children yet to be born,
and
they in turn would tell their children.
7
Then
they would put their trust in God
and
would not forget his deeds
but
would keep his commands.
8
They
would not be like their forefathers--
a
stubborn and rebellious generation,
whose
hearts were not loyal to God,
whose
spirits were not faithful to him.
9
The
men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,
turned
back on the day of battle;
10
they
did not keep God's covenant
and
refused to live by his law.
11
They
forgot what he had done,
the
wonders he had shown them.

He
did miracles in the sight of their fathers
in
the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
13
He
divided the sea and led them through;
he
made the water stand firm like a wall.

He
guided them with the cloud by day

with light from the fire all night.

split the rocks in the desert

gave them water as abundant as the seas;

they continued to sin against him,

willfully put God to the test
by
demanding the food they craved.

spoke against God, saying,
"Can
God spread a table in the desert?

he struck the rock, water gushed out,

streams flowed abundantly.
But
can he also give us food?
Can
he supply meat for his people?"

When
the LORD heard them, he was very angry;
his
fire broke out against Jacob,
and
his wrath rose against Israel,
22
for
they did not believe in God
or
trust in his deliverance.
23
Yet
he gave a command to the skies above
and
opened the doors of the heavens;
he
gave them the grain of heaven.
25
Men
ate the bread of angels;
he
sent them all the food they could eat.
26
He
let loose the east wind from the heavens
and
led forth the south wind by his power.
27
He
rained meat down on them like dust,
flying
birds like sand on the seashore.
28
He
made them come down inside their camp,
all
around their tents.
29
They
ate till they had more than enough,
for
he had given them what they craved.

But
before they turned from the food they craved,
even
while it was still in their mouths,

God's
anger rose against them;
he
put to death the sturdiest among them,
cutting
down the young men of Israel.

In
spite of all this, they kept on sinning;
in
spite of his wonders, they did not believe.

So
he ended their days in futility
and
their years in terror.

Whenever
God slew them, they would seek him;
they
eagerly turned to him again.
35
They
remembered that God was their Rock,
that
God Most High was their Redeemer.
36
But
then they would flatter him with their mouths,
lying
to him with their tongues;
37
their
hearts were not loyal to him,
they
were not faithful to his covenant.
38
Yet
he was merciful;
he
forgave their iniquities
and
did not destroy them.
Time
after time he restrained his anger
and
did not stir up his full wrath. 8

He
remembered that they were but flesh,
a
passing breeze that does not return.

How
often they rebelled against him in the desert
and
grieved him in the wasteland!

Again
and again they put God to the test;
they
vexed the Holy One of Israel.

They
did not remember his power--
the
day he redeemed them from the oppressor,

the
day he displayed his miraculous signs in Egypt,
his
wonders in the region of Zoan.

He
turned their rivers to blood;
they
could not drink from their streams.

He
sent swarms of flies that devoured them,
and
frogs that devastated them.

He
gave their crops to the grasshopper,

produce to the locust.

He
destroyed their vines with hail
and

gave over their cattle to the hail,

livestock to bolts of lightning.

unleashed against them his hot anger,

wrath, indignation and hostility--

band of destroying angels.

prepared a path for his anger;

he brought his people out like a flock;

rejected Israel completely.

tent he had set up among men.

sent the ark of his might into captivity,

splendor into the hands of the enemy.

He
gave his people over to the sword;

was very angry with his inheritance.

Fire
consumed their young men,
and
their maidens had no wedding songs;

their
priests were put to the sword,

their widows could not weep.

the Lord awoke as from sleep,

Thus
the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until
the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

1
Now
Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo,
prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God
of Israel, who was over them.
2
Then
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak set to work to
rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were
with them, helping them.
3
At
that time Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai
and their associates went to them and asked, "Who authorized you
to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?" 4
They
also asked, "What are the names of the men constructing this
building?" A
5
But
the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews, and
they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his
written reply be received.
6
This
is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates,
and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of
Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7
The
report they sent him read as follows:
To
King Darius:
Cordial
greetings.
8
The
king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple
of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and
placing the timbers in the walls. The work is being carried on with
diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.
9
We
questioned the elders and asked them, "Who authorized you to
rebuild this temple and restore this structure?" 10
We
also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of
their leaders for your information.
11
This
is the answer they gave us:
"We
are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are
rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, one that a great
king of Israel built and finished. 12
But
because our fathers angered the God of heaven, he handed them over to
Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this
temple and deported the people to Babylon.
13
"However,
in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a
decree to rebuild this house of God. 14
He
even removed from 18
the temple B
of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to
the temple C
in Babylon.
"Then
King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had
appointed governor, 15
and
he told him, `Take these articles and go and deposit them in the
temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.'
16
So
this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in
Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under
construction but is not yet finished."
17
Now
if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives of
Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild
this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his
decision in this matter.

King
Darius then issued an order, and they searched in the archives stored
in the treasury at Babylon. 2
A
scroll was found in the citadel of Ecbatana in the province of Media,
and this was written on it:
Memorandum:
3
In
the first year of King Cyrus, the king issued a decree concerning the
temple of God in Jerusalem:
Let
the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices, and let its
foundations be laid. It is to be ninety feet A
high and ninety feet wide, 4
with
three courses of large stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be
paid by the royal treasury. 5
Also,
the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to
Babylon, are to be returned to their places in the temple in
Jerusalem; they are to be deposited in the house of God. there. 7
Do
not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor
of the Jews and the Jewish elders rebuild this house of God on its
site.
8
Moreover,
I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in
the construction of this house of God:
The
expenses of these men are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury,
from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop.
9
Whatever
is needed--young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the
God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and oil, as requested by the
priests in Jerusalem--must be given them daily without fail, 10
so
that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray
for the well-being of the king and his sons.
11
Furthermore,
I decree that if anyone changes this edict, a beam is to be pulled
from his house and he is to be lifted up and impaled on it. And for
this crime his house is to be made a pile of rubble. 12
May
God, who has caused his Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or
people who lifts a hand to change this decree or to destroy this
temple in Jerusalem.
I
Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence.
13
Then,
because of the decree King Darius had sent, Tattenai, governor of
Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates carried it
out with diligence. 14
So
the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the
preaching of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo.
They finished building the temple according to the command of the God
of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of
Persia. 15
The
temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth
year of the reign of King Darius.
16
Then
the people of Israel--the priests, the Levites and the rest of the
exiles--celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy. 17
For
the dedication of this house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two
hundred rams, four hundred male lambs and, as a sin offering for all
Israel, twelve male goats, one for each of the tribes of Israel. 18
And
they installed the priests in their divisions and the Levites in
their groups for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what
is written in the Book of Moses.
19
On
the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the
Passover. 20
The
priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially
clean. The Levites slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles,
for their brothers the priests and for themselves. 21
So
the Israelites who had returned from the exile ate it, together with
all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of their
Gentile neighbors in order to seek the LORD, the God of Israel. 22
For
seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
because the 19
LORD had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of
Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God,
the God of Israel. 20

Now
then, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and
you, their fellow officials of that province, stay away from 21

What,
after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom
you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6
I
planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. 7
So
neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God,
who makes things grow. 8
The
man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will
be rewarded according to his own labor.
9
For
we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
10
By
the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder,
and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful
how he builds. 11
For
no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which
is Jesus Christ. 12
If
any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones,
wood, hay or straw, 13
his
work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to
light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the
quality of each man's work. 14
If
what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15
If
it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but
only as one escaping through the flames.
16
Don't
you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit
lives in you?
17
If
anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple
is sacred, and you are that temple.
18
Do
not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the
standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he
may become wise. 19
For
the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is
written: "He
catches the wise in their craftiness"

and
again, "The
Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."

So
then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours, 22
whether
Paul or Apollos or Cephas C
or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are
yours, 23
and
you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. 22

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
