In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

rises at one end of the heavens

is hidden from its heat.

The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving

statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,

wise the simple.

The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.

commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.

The

Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--

who trust in their wealth

boast of their great riches?

man can redeem the life of another

give to God a ransom for him--

ransom for a life is costly,

payment is ever enough--

he should live on forever

not see decay.

A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.

Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,

we are in desperate need.

not remain silent,

wicked and deceitful men

opened their mouths against me;

words of hatred they surround me;

return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.

They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.

Appoint

knowledge is too wonderful for me,

can I go from your Spirit?

Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.

It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.

A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A

He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.

It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. 12

king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.

A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.

Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.

He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.

He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.

Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. 13
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.

Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and

After
these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son
of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 2
the
son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 3
the
son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4
the
son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5
the
son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of
Aaron the chief priest—6
this
Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of
Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had
granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was
on him. 7
Some
of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers
and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of
King Artaxerxes.
8
Ezra
arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the
king. 9
He
had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first
month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth
month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him. 10
For
Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of
the LORD, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.
11
This
is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra the priest
and teacher, a man learned in matters concerning the commands and
decrees of the LORD for Israel:
12
A Artaxerxes,
king of kings,
To
Ezra the priest, a teacher of the Law of the God of heaven:
Greetings.
13
Now
I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including priests
and Levites, who wish to go to Jerusalem with you, may go. 14
You
are sent by the king and his seven advisers to inquire about Judah
and Jerusalem with regard to the Law of your God, which is in your
hand. 15
Moreover,
you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his
advisers have freely given to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in
Jerusalem, 16
together
with all the silver and gold you may obtain from the province of
Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests
for the temple of their God in Jerusalem. 17
With
this money be sure to buy bulls, rams and male lambs, together with
their grain offerings and drink offerings, and sacrifice them on the
altar of the temple of your God in Jerusalem.
18
You
and your brother Jews may then do whatever seems best with the rest
of the silver and gold, in accordance with the will of your God. 19
Deliver
to the God of Jerusalem all the articles entrusted to you for worship
in the temple of your God.
20
And
anything else needed for the temple of your God that you may have
occasion to supply, you may provide from the royal treasury.
21
Now
I, King Artaxerxes, order all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates to
provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, a teacher of the 15
Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you—22
up
to a hundred talents B
of silver, a hundred cors C
of wheat, a hundred baths D
of wine, a hundred baths E
of olive oil, and salt without limit. 23
Whatever
the God of heaven has prescribed, let it be done with diligence for
the temple of the God of heaven. Why should there be wrath against
the realm of the king and of his sons? 24
You
are also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute
or duty on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple
servants or other workers at this house of God.
25
And
you, Ezra, in accordance with the wisdom of your God, which you
possess, appoint magistrates and judges to administer justice to all
the people of Trans-Euphrates--all who know the laws of your God. And
you are to teach any who do not know them. 26
Whoever
does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king must surely
be punished by death, banishment, confiscation of property, or
imprisonment.
27
Praise
be to the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put it into the
king's heart to bring honor to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem in
this way 28
and
who has extended his good favor to me before the king and his
advisers and all the king's powerful officials. Because the hand of
the LORD my God was on me, I took courage and gathered leading men
from Israel to go up with me.

of
the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel;
of
the descendants of David, Hattush 3

the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were registered
150 men;
4
of
the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with
him 200 men;
5
of
the descendants of Zattu, A
Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
6
of
the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
7
of
the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70
men;

of
the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him
80 men;
9
of
the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;

of
the descendants of Bani, B
Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;

of
the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28
men;
12
of
the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110
men;
13
of
the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones, whose names were
Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
14
of
the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.
15
I
assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped
there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I
found no Levites there. 16
So
I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan,
Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and
Elnathan, who were men of learning,
17
and
I sent them to Iddo, the leader in Casiphia. I told them what to say
to Iddo and his kinsmen, the temple servants in Casiphia, so that
they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. 18
Because
the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a
capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of
Israel, and Sherebiah's sons and brothers, 18 men; 19
and
Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and
his brothers and nephews, 20 men. 20
They
also brought 220 of the temple servants--a body that David and the
officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered
by name. 17

1
So
then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those
entrusted with the secret things of God. 2
Now
it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove
faithful. 3
I
care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed,
I do not even judge myself. 4
My
conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the
Lord who judges me. 5
Therefore
judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He
will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the
motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise
from God.
6
Now,
brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your
benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do
not go beyond what is written." Then you will not take pride in
one man over against another. 7
For
who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you
did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as
though you did not?
8
Already
you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have become
kings--and that without us! How I wish that you really had become
kings so that we might be kings with you! 9
For
it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of
the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been
made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.
10
We
are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but
you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 11
To
this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are
brutally treated, we are homeless.
12
We
work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we
are persecuted, we endure it; 13
when
we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become
the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.
14
I
am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear
children. 15
Even
though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have
many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the
gospel. 16
Therefore
I urge you to imitate me. 17
For
this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is
faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ
Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
18
Some
of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19
But
I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will
find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what
power they have. 20
For
the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21
What
do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a
gentle spirit? 18
