heavens declare the glory of God;
the
skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2
Day
after day they pour forth speech;
night
after night they display knowledge.

There
is no speech or language
where
their voice is not heard. A
4
Their
voice B goes out into all the earth,
their
words to the ends of the world.
In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5
which
is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like
a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6
It
rises at one end of the heavens
and
makes its circuit to the other;
nothing
is hidden from its heat.
7
The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving
the soul.
The
statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making
wise the simple.
8
The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.
The
commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.
9
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring
forever.
The
ordinances of the LORD are sure
and
altogether righteous. [1]

They
are more precious than gold,
than
much pure gold;
they
are sweeter than honey,
than
honey from the comb.
11
By
them is your servant warned;
in
keeping them there is great reward.

Who
can discern his errors?
Forgive
my hidden faults.

Keep

Hear
this, all you peoples;
listen,
all who live in this world,

both
low and high,
rich
and poor alike:

My
mouth will speak words of wisdom;
the
utterance from my heart will give understanding.
4
I
will turn my ear to a proverb;
with
the harp I will expound my riddle:
5
Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--
6
those
who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches?
7
No
man can redeem the life of another
or
give to God a ransom for him--
8
the
ransom for a life is costly,
no
payment is ever enough--
9
that
he should live on forever
and
not see decay.
10
For
all can see that wise men die;
the
foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.
11
Their
tombs will remain their houses A forever,
their
dwellings for endless generations,
though
they had B named lands after themselves. [3]

But
man, despite his riches, does not endure;
he
is C like the beasts that perish.

This
is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and
of their followers, who approve their sayings.

A
man who has riches without understanding

PSALMS: 79
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.
8
Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for
we are in desperate need.
9
Help
us, O God our Savior,
for
the glory of your name;
deliver
us and forgive our sins
for
your name's sake.

Why
should the nations say,
"Where
is their God?" [5]
Before
our eyes, make known among the nations
that
you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.

May
the groans of the prisoners come before you;
by
the strength of your arm
preserve
those condemned to die.

Pay
back into the laps of our neighbors seven times
the
reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.
13
Then
we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
will
praise you forever;
from
generation to generation
we

For

O
God, whom I praise,
do
not remain silent,
2
for
wicked and deceitful men
have
opened their mouths against me;
they
have spoken against me with lying tongues.
3
With
words of hatred they surround me;
they
attack me without cause.
4
In
return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.
5
They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.
6
Appoint
A an evil man B to oppose him;
let
an accuser C stand at his right hand.
7
When
he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and
may his prayers condemn him.
8
May
his days be few;
may
another take his place of leadership.
9
May
his children be fatherless
and
his wife a widow.
10
May
his children be wandering beggars;
may
they be driven D from their ruined homes.
11
May
a creditor seize all he has;
may
strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.

May
no one extend kindness to him
or
take pity on his fatherless children.

hounded to death the poor
and
the needy and the brokenhearted.

He
loved to pronounce a curse--
may

wore cursing as his garment;

entered into his body like water,
into
his bones like oil.

May
it be like a cloak wrapped about him,

a belt tied forever around him.

May
this be the LORD's payment to my accusers,

those who speak evil of me.

you, O Sovereign LORD,
deal
well with me for your name's sake;
out
of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

For
I am poor and needy,
and
my heart is wounded within me.

I
fade away like an evening shadow;
I
am shaken off like a locust.

My
knees give way from fasting;

body is thin and gaunt.

I
am an object of scorn to my accusers;
when

Help

save
me in accordance with your love.

them know that it is your hand,

may curse, but you will bless;

wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD;

LORD, you have searched me
and
you know me.

You
know when I sit and when I rise;
you
perceive my thoughts from afar.

You
discern my going out and my lying down;
you
are familiar with all my ways.

Before
a word is on my tongue
you
know it completely, O LORD.
5
You
hem me in--behind and before;
you
have laid your hand upon me.
6
Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too
lofty for me to attain.
7
Where
can I go from your Spirit?
Where
can I flee from your presence?
8
If
I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if
I make my bed in the depths, A you are there.

If
I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if
I settle on the far side of the sea,

even
there your hand will guide me,
your
right hand will hold me fast.

If
I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me

the light become night around me,"

frame was not hidden from you

eyes saw my unformed body.
All
the days ordained for me
were
written in your book

one of them came to be.

How
precious to B me are your thoughts, O God!
How
vast is the sum of them!

Were
I to count them,
they
would outnumber the grains of sand.

I awake,

am still with you.

If
only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away
from me, you bloodthirsty men!

They
speak of you with evil intent;
your
adversaries misuse your name.

Do
I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and
abhor those who rise up against you?

I
have nothing but hatred for them;
I
count them my enemies.
23
Search
me, O God, and know my heart;
test
me and know my anxious thoughts.

See
if there is any offensive way in me,
and
lead me in the way everlasting. [11]
PROVERBS: 19
19
1
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.
3
A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A
8
He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.
10
It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
11
A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. [12]

A
king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.
13
A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.
14
Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15
Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.
16
He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
17
He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.
18
Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. [13]
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
29
Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and
beatings for the backs of fools. [14]

TESTAMENT: 1 SAMUEL 10:1 - 11:15

Then
Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul's head and kissed him, saying,
"Has not the LORD anointed you leader over his inheritance? A 2
When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel's tomb, at
Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, `The donkeys you set out
to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them
and is worried about you. He is asking, "What shall I do about my son?"'
3
"Then
you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men
going up to God at Bethel will meet you there. One will be carrying three young
goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. 4
They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will
accept from them.
5
"After
that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you
approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the
high place with lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps being played before them,
and they will be prophesying. 6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon
you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a
different person. 7 Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your
hand finds to do, for God is with you.
8
"Go
down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt
offerings and fellowship offerings, B but you must wait seven days
until I come to you and tell you what you are to do."
9
As
Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul's heart, and [15]
all these signs were fulfilled that day. 10 When they arrived at
Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came upon him in
power, and he joined in their prophesying. 11 When all those who had
formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other,
"What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the
prophets?"
12
A
man who lived there answered, "And who is their father?" So it became a saying:
"Is Saul also among the prophets?" 13 After Saul stopped prophesying,
he went to the high place.
14
Now
Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, "Where have you been?"
"Looking
for the donkeys," he said. "But when we saw they were not to be found, we went
to Samuel."
15
Saul's
uncle said, "Tell me what Samuel said to you."
16
Saul
replied, "He assured us that the donkeys had been found." But he did not tell
his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.
17
Samuel
summoned the people of Israel to the LORD at Mizpah 18 and said to
them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel,
says: `I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of
Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.' 19 But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of
all your calamities and distresses. And you have said, `No, set a king over us.'
So now present yourselves before the LORD by
your tribes and clans."
20
When
Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, the tribe of [16]
Benjamin was chosen. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of
Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri's clan was chosen. Finally Saul son of Kish
was chosen. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22
So they inquired further of the LORD, "Has the man come here yet?"
And
the LORD said, "Yes, he has hidden himself among the
baggage."
23
They
ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller
than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see
the man the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people."
Then
the people shouted, "Long live the king!"
25
Samuel
explained to the people the regulations of the kingship. He wrote them down on a
scroll and deposited it before the LORD. Then Samuel dismissed the people, each
to his own home.
26
Saul
also went to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by valiant men whose hearts God had
touched. 27 But some troublemakers said, "How can this fellow save
us?" They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul kept
silent.

Nahash
the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said
to him, "Make a treaty with us, and [17]
we will be subject to you."
2
But
Nahash the Ammonite replied, "I will make a treaty with you only on the
condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring
disgrace on all Israel."
3
The
elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days so we can send messengers
throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you."
4
When
the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people,
they all wept aloud. 5 Just then Saul was returning from the fields,
behind his oxen, and he asked, "What is wrong with the people? Why are they
weeping?" Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.
6
When
Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he burned
with anger. 7 He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent
the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, "This is what will be
done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel." Then the terror
of the LORD fell on the people, and they turned out as one man. 8
When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred
thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9
They
told the messengers who had come, "Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, `By the time
the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be delivered.'" When the messengers went and
reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 10 They said to
the Ammonites, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us [18]
whatever seems good to you."
11
The
next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of
the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until
the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them
were left together.
12
The
people then said to Samuel, "Who was it that asked, `Shall Saul reign over us?'
Bring these men to us and we will put them to death."
13
But
Saul said, "No one shall be put to death today, for this day the LORD has
rescued Israel."
14
Then
Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and there reaffirm the
kingship." 15 So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as
king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings
A before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great
celebration. [19]

TESTAMENT: JOHN 6:43 - 71

"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered.
44 "No one can come to me unless the Father
who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45
It is written in the Prophets: `They will all be
taught by God.' D Everyone who
listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;
only he has seen the Father. 47 I
tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
48 I am the bread of life.
49 Your forefathers ate the manna in
the desert, yet they died. 50 But
here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.
51 I am the living bread that came
down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
52
Then
the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his
flesh to eat?"
53
Jesus
said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat
the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks
my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is real food and my
blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats
my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
57 Just as the living Father sent me
and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because
of me. 58 This is the bread that
came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on
this bread will live forever." 59 He said this while teaching
in the synagogue in Capernaum. [20]

On
hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept
it?"
61
Aware
that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was
before! 63 The Spirit gives life;
the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit
E and they are life.
64 Yet there are some of you who do
not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did
not believe and who would betray him.
65
He
went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one
can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."
66
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67
"You do not want to leave too, do you?"
Jesus asked the Twelve.
68
Simon
Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal
life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
70
Then
Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet
one of you is a devil!"

(He
meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later
to betray him.) [21]
