FEBRUARY 16
PSALMS: 16, 46, 76, 106, 136
PROVERBS: 16
OLD TESTAMENT: 1 SAMUEL 2:22 - 4:22
NEW TESTAMENT: JOHN 5:24 - 47
PSALMS: 16
1 Preserve me, God, for in you do I take refuge.
2 My soul, you have said to the LORD,
"You are my Lord.
Apart from you I have no good thing."
3 As for the holy ones who are in the eretz,
They are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who give gifts to another god.
Their drink-offerings of blood I will not offer,
Nor take their names on my lips.
5 The LORD assigned my portion and my cup.
You made my lot secure.
6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places.
Yes, I have a good inheritance.
7 I will bless the LORD, who has given me counsel.
Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me.
Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices.
My body shall also dwell in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul in She'ol,
Neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.
11 You will show me the path of life.
In your presence is fullness of joy.
In your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.
PSALMS: 46
1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will we not be afraid, though the eretz changes,
Though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;
3 Though the waters of it roar and are troubled,
Though the mountains tremble with the swelling of it. Selah.
4 There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad,
The holy place of the tents of Ha`Elyon.
5 God is in the midst of her.
She shall not be moved.
God will help her at dawn.
6 The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved.
He uttered his voice, and the eretz melted.
7 The LORD of Hosts is with us.
The God of Ya`akov is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come, see the works of the LORD,
What desolations he has made in the eretz.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the eretz.
He breaks the bow, and cuts the spear apart.
He burns the chariots in the fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations.
I will be exalted in the eretz."
11 The LORD of Hosts is with us.
The God of Ya`akov is our refuge. Selah.
PSALMS: 76
1 In Yehudah, God is known.
His name is great in Yisra'el.
2 His tent is also in Shalem;
His dwelling-place in Tziyon.
3 There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow,
The shield, and the sword, and the weapons of war.
Selah.
4 Glorious are you, and excellent,
More than mountains of game.
5 Valiant men lie plundered,
They have slept their last sleep.
None of the men of war can lift their hands.
6 At your rebuke, God of Ya`akov,
Both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.
7 You, even you, are to be feared.
Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?
8 You pronounced judgment from heaven.
The eretz feared, and was silent,
9 When God arose to judgment,
To save all the afflicted ones of the eretz. Selah.
10 Surely the wrath of man praises you.
The survivors of your wrath are restrained.
11 Make vows to the LORD your God, and fulfill them!
Let all of his neighbors bring presents to him who is to be feared.
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes.
He is feared by the kings of the eretz.
PSALMS: 106
1 Praise the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
For his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD,
Or fully declare all his praise?
3 Blessed are those who keep justice,
He who does righteousness at all times.
4 Remember me, LORD, with the favor that you show to your people.
Visit me with your yeshu`ah,
5 That I may see the prosperity of your chosen,
That I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
That I may glory with your inheritance.
6 We have sinned with our fathers.
We have committed iniquity.
We have done wickedly.
7 Our fathers didn't understand your wonders in Mitzrayim.
They didn't remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses,
But were rebellious at the sea, even at the Sea of Suf.
8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake,
That he might make his mighty power known.
9 He rebuked the Sea of Suf also, and it was dried up;
So he led them through the depths, as through a desert.
10 He saved them from the hand of him who hated them,
And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11 The waters covered their adversaries.
There was not one of them left.
12 Then they believed his words.
They sang his praise.
13 They soon forgot his works.
They didn't wait for his counsel,
14 But gave in to craving in the desert,
And tested God in the wasteland.
15 He gave them their request,
But sent leanness into their soul.
16 They envied Moshe also in the camp,
And Aharon, the LORD's holy one.
17 The eretz opened and swallowed up Datan,
And covered the company of Aviram.
18 A fire was kindled in their company.
The flame burned up the wicked.
19 They made a calf in Horev,
And worshiped a molten image.
20 Thus they exchanged their glory
For an image of a bull that eats grass.
21 They forgot God, their Savior,
Who had done great things in Mitzrayim,
22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
And awesome things by the Sea of Suf.
23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them,
Had Moshe, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach,
To turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them.
24 Yes, they despised the pleasant land.
They didn't believe his word,
25 But murmured in their tents,
And didn't listen to the voice of the LORD.
26 Therefore he swore to them
That he would overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 That he would overthrow their seed among the nations,
And scatter them in the lands.
28 They joined themselves also to Ba`al-Pe`or,
And ate the sacrifices of the dead.
29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds.
The plague broke in on them.
30 Then Pinechas stood up, and executed judgment,
So the plague was stopped.
31 That was credited to him for righteousness,
To all generations forevermore.
32 They angered him also at the waters of Merivah,
So that Moshe was troubled for their sakes;
33 Because they were rebellious against his spirit,
He spoke rashly with his lips.
34 They didn't destroy the peoples,
As the LORD commanded them,
35 But mixed themselves with the nations,
Learned their works.
36 They served their idols,
Which became a snare to them.
37 Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.
38 They shed innocent blood,
Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Kana`an.
The land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus were they defiled with their works,
And prostituted themselves in their deeds.
40 Therefore the wrath of the LORD was kindled against his people.
He abhorred his inheritance.
41 He gave them into the hand of the nations.
Those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them.
They were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 Many times he delivered them,
But they were rebellious in their counsel,
And were brought low in their iniquity.
44 Nevertheless he regarded their distress,
When he heard their cry.
45 He remembered for them his covenant,
And repented according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
46 He made them also to be pitied
By all those who carried them captive.
47 Save us, LORD, our God,
Gather us from among the nations,
To give thanks to your holy name,
To triumph in your praise!
48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Yisra'el,
From everlasting even to everlasting!
Let all the people say, ‘
"Amein.
" Praise the LORD!
PSALMS: 136
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
For his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods;
For his loving kindness endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
4 To him who alone does great wonders;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
5 To him who by understanding made the heavens;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
6 To him who spread out the eretz above the waters;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
7 To him who made the great lights;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
8 The sun to rule by day;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
9 The moon and stars to rule by night;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
10 To him who struck down the Mitzrian firstborn;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
11 And brought out Yisra'el from among them;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
12 With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
13 To him who divided the Sea of Suf apart;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
14 Made Yisra'el to pass through the midst of it;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
15 But overthrew Par`oh and his host in the Sea of Suf;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
16 To him who led his people through the wilderness;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
17 To him who struck great kings;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
18 And killed mighty kings;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
19 Sichon king of the Amori;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
20 `Og king of Bashan;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
21 And gave their land as an inheritance;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
22 Even a heritage to Yisra'el his servant;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
23 Who remembered us in our low estate;
For his loving kindness endures forever;
24 And has delivered us from our adversaries;
For his loving kindness endures forever:
25 Who gives food to every creature;
For his loving kindness endures forever.
26 Oh give thanks to the God of heaven;
For his loving kindness endures forever.
PROVERBS: 16
1 The plans of the heart belong to man,
But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes;
But the LORD weighs the motives.
3 Commit your deeds to the LORD,
And your plans shall succeed.
4 The LORD has made everything for its own end --
Yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.
5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD:
They shall assuredly not be unpunished.
6 By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for.
By the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
7 When a man's ways please the LORD,
He makes even his enemies to be at shalom with him.
8 Better is a little with righteousness,
Than great revenues with injustice.
9 A man's heart plans his course,
But the LORD directs his steps.
10 Inspired judgments are on the lips of the king.
He shall not betray his mouth.
11 Honest balances and scales are the LORD's;
All the weights in the bag are his work.
12 It is an abomination for kings to do wrong,
For the throne is established by righteousness.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings.
They value one who speaks the truth.
14 The king's wrath is a messenger of death,
But a wise man will pacify it.
15 In the light of the king's face is life.
His favor is like a cloud of the spring rain.
16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold!
Yes, to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil.
He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
18 Pride goes before destruction,
A haughty spirit before a fall.
19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor,
Than to divide the plunder with the proud.
20 He who gives heed to the Word finds prosperity.
Whoever trusts in the LORD is blessed.
21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent.
Pleasantness of the lips promotes instruction.
22 Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it,
But the punishment of fools is their folly.
23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth,
And adds learning to his lips.
24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25 There is a way which seems right to a man,
But in the end it leads to death.
26 The appetite of the laboring man labors for him;
For his mouth urges him on.
27 A worthless man devises mischief.
His speech is like a scorching fire.
28 A perverse man stirs up strife.
A whisperer separates close friends.
29 A man of violence entices his neighbor,
And leads him in a way that is not good.
30 One who winks his eyes to plot perversities,
One who compresses his lips, is bent on evil.
31 Gray hair is a crown of glory.
It is attained by a life of righteousness.
32 One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
One who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city.
33 The lot is cast into the lap,
But its every decision is from the LORD.
OLD TESTAMENT: 1 SAMUEL 2:22 - 4:22
2:22 Now `Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Yisra'el, and how that they lay with the women who served at the door of the tent of meeting. 23 He said to them, Why do you such things? for I hear of your evil dealings from all this people. 24 No, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: you make the LORD's people to disobey. 25 If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they didn't listen to the voice of their father, because the LORD was minded to kill them. 26 The child Shemu'el grew on, and increased in favor both with the LORD, and also with men.
27 There came a man of God to `Eli, and said to him, Thus says the LORD, Did I reveal myself to the house of your father, when they were in Mitzrayim [in bondage] to Par`oh's house? 28 and did I choose him out of all the tribes of Yisra'el to be my Kohen, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an efod before me? and did I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Yisra'el made by fire? 29 Why kick you at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in [my] habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Yisra'el my people? 30 Therefore the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, says, I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD says, Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. 32 You shall see the affliction of [my] habitation, in all the wealth which [God] shall give Yisra'el; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 The man of yours, [whom] I shall not cut off from my altar, [shall be] to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart; and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age. 34 This shall be the sign to you, that shall come on your two sons, on Hofni and Pinechas: in one day they shall die both of them. 35 I will raise me up a faithful Kohen, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever. 36 It shall happen, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, Please put me into one of the Kohanim' offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.
3:1 The child Shemu'el ministered to the LORD before `Eli. The word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision. 2 It happened at that time, when `Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see), 3 and the lamp of God hadn't yet gone out, and Shemu'el had laid down [to sleep], in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was; 4 that the LORD called Shemu'el; and he said, Here am I. 5 He ran to `Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. He said, I didn't call; lie down again. He went and lay down. 6 The LORD called yet again, Shemu'el. Shemu'el arose and went to `Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. He answered, I didn't call, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Shemu'el didn't yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him. 8 The LORD called Shemu'el again the third time. He arose and went to `Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. `Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9 Therefore `Eli said to Shemu'el, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call you, that you shall say, Speak, the LORD; for your servant hears. So Shemu'el went and lay down in his place. 10 The LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Shemu'el, Shemu'el. Then Shemu'el said, Speak; for your servant hears. 11 The LORD said to Shemu'el, Behold, I will do a thing in Yisra'el, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against `Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end. 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse on themselves, and he didn't restrain them. 14 Therefore I have sworn to the house of `Eli, that the iniquity of `Eli's house shall not be expiated with sacrifice nor offering forever. 15 Shemu'el lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Shemu'el feared to show `Eli the vision. 16 Then `Eli called Shemu'el, and said, Shemu'el, my son. He said, Here am I. 17 He said, "What is the thing that [the LORD] has spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you." 18 Shemu'el told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. He said, It is the LORD: let him do what seems him good. 19 Shemu'el grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 All Yisra'el from Dan even to Be'er-Sheva knew that Shemu'el was established to be a prophet of the LORD. 21 The LORD appeared again in Shiloh; for the LORD revealed himself to Shemu'el in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
4:1 The word of Shemu'el came to all Yisra'el. Now Yisra'el went out against the Pelishtim to battle, and encamped beside Even-Ha`ezer: and the Pelishtim encamped in Afek. 2 The Pelishtim put themselves in array against Yisra'el: and when they joined battle, Yisra'el was struck before the Pelishtim; and they killed of the army in the field about four thousand men. 3 When the people were come into the camp, the Zakenim of Yisra'el said, Why has the LORD struck us today before the Pelishtim? Let us get the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits [above] the Keruvim: and the two sons of `Eli, Hofni and Pinechas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 When the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Yisra'el shouted with a great shout, so that the eretz rang again. 6 When the Pelishtim heard the noise of the shout, they said, What means the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? They understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. 7 The Pelishtim were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. They said, Woe to us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore. 8 Woe to us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that struck the Mitzrim with all manner of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, and behave yourselves like men, O you Pelishtim, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 10 The Pelishtim fought, and Yisra'el was struck, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Yisra'el thirty thousand footmen. 11The ark of God was taken; and the two sons of `Eli, Hofni and Pinechas, were slain. 12 There ran a man of Binyamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn, and with dirt on his head. 13 When he came, behold, `Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. 14 When `Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What means the noise of this tumult? The man hurried, and came and told `Eli. 15 Now `Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see. 16 The man said to `Eli, I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army. He said, How went the matter, my son? 17 He who brought the news answered, Yisra'el is fled before the Pelishtim, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hofni and Pinechas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. 18 It happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that [`Eli] fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Yisra'el forty years. 19 His daughter-in-law, Pinechas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the news that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came on her. 20 About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, Don't be afraid; for you have brought forth a son. But she didn't answer, neither did she regard it. 21 She named the child Ikhavod, saying, The glory is departed from Yisra'el; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, The glory is departed from Yisra'el; for the ark of God is taken.
NEW TESTAMENT: JOHN 5:24 - 47
5:24 "Most assuredly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
25 Most assuredly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live.
26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself.
27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.
28 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice,
29 and will come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.
31 "If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.
32 It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true.
33 You have sent to Yochanan, and he has testified to the truth.
34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.
35 He was the lamp that burns and shines, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of Yochanan, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.
37 The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.
38 You don't have his word living in you; for whom he sent, him you don't believe.
39 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.
40 Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.
41 I don't receive glory from men.
42 But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves.
43 I have come in my Father's name, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?
45 "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moshe, on whom you have set your hope.
46 For if you believed Moshe, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
47 But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
