PSALMS:
5
For
the director of music. For flutes. A psalm of David.
1
Give
ear to my words, O LORD,
consider
my sighing.
2
Listen
to my cry for help,
my
King and my God,
for
to you I pray.
3
In
the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice;
in
the morning I lay my requests before you
and
wait in expectation.
4
You
are not a God who takes pleasure in evil;
with
you the wicked cannot dwell.
5
The
arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
you
hate all who do wrong.
6
You
destroy those who tell lies;
bloodthirsty
and deceitful men
the
LORD abhors.
7
But
I, by your great mercy,
will
come into your house;
in
reverence will I bow down
toward
your holy temple.
8
Lead
me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because
of my enemies--
make
straight your way before me. [1]
9
Not
a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their
heart is filled with destruction.
Their
throat is an open grave;
with
their tongue they speak deceit.
10
Declare
them guilty, O God!
Let
their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish
them for their many sins,
for
they have rebelled against you.
11
But
let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let
them ever sing for joy.
Spread
your protection over them,
that
those who love your name may rejoice in you.
12
For
surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you
surround them with your favor as with a shield. [2]
PSALMS: 35
Of
David.
1
Contend,
O LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight
against those who fight against me.
2
Take
up shield and buckler;
arise
and come to my aid.
3
Brandish
spear and javelin A
against
those who pursue me.
Say
to my soul,
"I am your salvation."
4
May
those who seek my life
be
disgraced and put to shame;
may
those who plot my ruin
be
turned back in dismay.
5
May
they be like chaff before the wind,
with
the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6
may
their path be dark and slippery,
with
the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7
Since
they hid their net for me without cause
and
without cause dug a pit for me,
8
may
ruin overtake them by surprise--
may
the net they hid entangle them,
may
they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9
Then
my soul will rejoice in the LORD
and
delight in his salvation.
10
My
whole being will exclaim,
"Who
is like you, O LORD?
You
rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the
poor and needy from those who rob them." [3]
11
Ruthless
witnesses come forward;
they
question me on things I know nothing about.
12
They
repay me evil for good
and
leave my soul forlorn.
13
Yet
when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and
humbled myself with fasting.
When
my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14
I
went about mourning
as
though for my friend or brother.
I
bowed my head in grief
as
though weeping for my mother.
15
But
when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
attackers
gathered against me when I was unaware.
They
slandered me without ceasing.
16
Like
the ungodly they maliciously mocked B;
they
gnashed their teeth at me.
17
O
Lord, how long will you look on?
Rescue
my life from their ravages,
my
precious life from these lions.
18
I
will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among
throngs of people I will praise you.
19
Let
not those gloat over me
who
are my enemies without cause;
let
not those who hate me without reason
maliciously
wink the eye.
20
They
do not speak peaceably,
but
devise false accusations
against
those who live quietly in the land.
21
They
gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha!
With
our own eyes we have seen it." [4]
22
O
LORD, you have seen this; be not silent.
Do
not be far from me, O Lord.
23
Awake,
and rise to my defense!
Contend
for me, my God and Lord.
24
Vindicate
me in your righteousness, O LORD my God;
do
not let them gloat over me.
25
Do
not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!"
or
say, "We have swallowed him up."
26
May
all who gloat over my distress
be
put to shame and confusion;
may
all who exalt themselves over me
be
clothed with shame and disgrace.
27
May
those who delight in my vindication
shout
for joy and gladness;
may
they always say, "The LORD be exalted,
who
delights in the well-being of his servant."
28
My
tongue will speak of your righteousness
and
of your praises all day long. [5]
PSALMS: 65
For
the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.
1
Praise
awaits A you, O God, in Zion;
to
you our vows will be fulfilled.
2
O
you who hear prayer,
to
you all men will come.
3
When
we were overwhelmed by sins,
you
forgave B our transgressions.
4
Blessed
are those you choose
and
bring near to live in your courts!
We
are filled with the good things of your house,
of
your holy temple.
5
You
answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
O
God our Savior,
the
hope of all the ends of the earth
and
of the farthest seas,
6
who
formed the mountains by your power,
having
armed yourself with strength,
7
who
stilled the roaring of the seas,
the
roaring of their waves,
and
the turmoil of the nations.
8
Those
living far away fear your wonders;
where
morning dawns and evening fades
you
call forth songs of joy.
9
You
care for the land and water it;
you
enrich it abundantly.
The
streams of God are filled with water
to
provide the people with grain, [6]
for
so you have ordained it. C
10
You
drench its furrows
and
level its ridges;
you
soften it with showers
and
bless its crops.
11
You
crown the year with your bounty,
and
your carts overflow with abundance.
12
The
grasslands of the desert overflow;
the
hills are clothed with gladness.
13
The
meadows are covered with flocks
and
the valleys are mantled with grain;
they
shout for joy and sing. [7]
PSALMS: 95
1
Come,
let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let
us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2
Let
us come before him with thanksgiving
and
extol him with music and song.
3
For
the LORD is the great God,
the
great King above all gods.
4
In
his hand are the depths of the earth,
and
the mountain peaks belong to him.
5
The
sea is his, for he made it,
and
his hands formed the dry land.
6
Come,
let us bow down in worship,
let
us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
7
for
he is our God
and
we are the people of his pasture,
the
flock under his care.
Today,
if you hear his voice,
8
do
not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, A
as
you did that day at Massah B in the desert,
9
where
your fathers tested and tried me,
though
they had seen what I did.
10
For
forty years I was angry with that generation;
I
said, "They are a people whose hearts go
astray,
and
they have not known my ways."
11
So
I declared on oath in my anger,
"They shall never enter my rest." [8]
PSALMS: 125
A
song of ascents.
1
Those
who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which
cannot be shaken but endures forever.
2
As
the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so
the LORD surrounds his people
both
now and forevermore.
3
The
scepter of the wicked will not remain
over
the land allotted to the righteous,
for
then the righteous might use
their
hands to do evil.
4
Do
good, O LORD, to those who are good,
to
those who are upright in heart.
5
But
those who turn to crooked ways
the
LORD will banish with the evildoers.
Peace
be upon Israel. [9]
PROVERBS: 5
5
1
My son, pay attention to my wisdom,
listen
well to my words of insight,
2
that
you may maintain discretion
and
your lips may preserve knowledge.
3
For
the lips of an adulteress drip honey,
and
her speech is smoother than oil;
4
but
in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp
as a double-edged sword.
5
Her
feet go down to death;
her
steps lead straight to the grave. A
6
She
gives no thought to the way of life;
her
paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
7
Now
then, my sons, listen to me;
do
not turn aside from what I say.
8
Keep
to a path far from her,
do
not go near the door of her house,
9
lest
you give your best strength to others
and
your years to one who is cruel,
10
lest
strangers feast on your wealth
and
your toil enrich another man's house.
11
At
the end of your life you will groan,
when
your flesh and body are spent.
12
You
will say, "How I hated discipline!
How
my heart spurned correction!
13
I
would not obey my teachers
or
listen to my instructors.
14
I
have come to the brink of utter ruin
in
the midst of the whole assembly."
15
Drink
water from your own cistern,
running
water from your own well.
16
Should
your springs overflow in the streets,
your
streams of water in the public squares?
17
Let
them be yours alone, [10]
never
to be shared with strangers.
18
May
your fountain be blessed,
and
may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19
A
loving doe, a graceful deer--
may
her breasts satisfy you always,
may
you ever be captivated by her love.
20
Why
be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?
Why
embrace the bosom of another man's wife?
21
For
a man's ways are in full view of the LORD,
and
he examines all his paths.
22
The
evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the
cords of his sin hold him fast.
23
He
will die for lack of discipline,
led
astray by his own great folly. [11]
OLD
TESTAMENT: JOB 16:1 - 19:29
16
1
Then
Job replied:
2
"I
have heard many things like these;
miserable
comforters are you all!
3
Will
your long-winded speeches never end?
What
ails you that you keep on arguing?
4
I
also could speak like you,
if
you were in my place;
I
could make fine speeches against you
and
shake my head at you.
5
But
my mouth would encourage you;
comfort
from my lips would bring you relief.
6
"Yet
if I speak, my pain is not relieved;
and
if I refrain, it does not go away.
7
Surely,
O God, you have worn me out;
you
have devastated my entire household.
8
You
have bound me--and it has become a witness;
my
gauntness rises up and testifies against me.
9
God
assails me and tears me in his anger
and
gnashes his teeth at me;
my
opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.
10
Men
open their mouths to jeer at me;
they
strike my cheek in scorn
and
unite together against me. [12]
11
God
has turned me over to evil men
and
thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.
12
All
was well with me, but he shattered me;
he
seized me by the neck and crushed me.
He
has made me his target;
13
his
archers surround me.
Without
pity, he pierces my kidneys
and
spills my gall on the ground.
14
Again
and again he bursts upon me;
he
rushes at me like a warrior.
15
"I
have sewed sackcloth over my skin
and
buried my brow in the dust.
16
My
face is red with weeping,
deep
shadows ring my eyes;
17
yet
my hands have been free of violence
and
my prayer is pure.
18
"O
earth, do not cover my blood;
may
my cry never be laid to rest!
19
Even
now my witness is in heaven;
my
advocate is on high.
20
My
intercessor is my friend A
as
my eyes pour out tears to God;
21
on
behalf of a man he pleads with God
as
a man pleads for his friend. [13]
"Only
a few years will pass
before
I go on the journey of no return.
17
1
My spirit is broken,
my
days are cut short,
the
grave awaits me.
2
Surely
mockers surround me;
my
eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3
"Give
me, O God, the pledge you demand.
Who
else will put up security for me?
4
You
have closed their minds to understanding;
therefore
you will not let them triumph.
5
If
a man denounces his friends for reward,
the
eyes of his children will fail.
6
"God
has made me a byword to everyone,
a
man in whose face people spit.
7
My
eyes have grown dim with grief;
my
whole frame is but a shadow.
8
Upright
men are appalled at this;
the
innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
9
Nevertheless,
the righteous will hold to their ways,
and
those with clean hands will grow stronger. [14]
10
"But
come on, all of you, try again!
I
will not find a wise man among you.
11
My
days have passed, my plans are shattered,
and
so are the desires of my heart.
12
These
men turn night into day;
in
the face of darkness they say, `Light is near.'
13
If
the only home I hope for is the grave, A
if
I spread out my bed in darkness,
14
if
I say to corruption, `You are my father,'
and
to the worm, `My mother' or `My sister,'
15
where
then is my hope?
Who
can see any hope for me?
16
Will
it go down to the gates of death B?
Will
we descend together into the dust?"
18
1
Then
Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2
When will you end these speeches?
Be
sensible, and then we can talk.
3
Why
are we regarded as cattle
and
considered stupid in your sight?
4
You
who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, [15]
is
the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
Or
must the rocks be moved from their place?
5
"The
lamp of the wicked is snuffed out;
the
flame of his fire stops burning.
6
The
light in his tent becomes dark;
the
lamp beside him goes out.
7
The
vigor of his step is weakened;
his
own schemes throw him down.
8
His
feet thrust him into a net
and
he wanders into its mesh.
9
A
trap seizes him by the heel;
a
snare holds him fast.
10
A
noose is hidden for him on the ground;
a
trap lies in his path.
11
Terrors
startle him on every side
and
dog his every step.
12
Calamity
is hungry for him;
disaster
is ready for him when he falls.
13
It
eats away parts of his skin;
death's
firstborn devours his limbs.
14
He
is torn from the security of his tent
and
marched off to the king of terrors.
15
Fire
resides A in his tent; [16]
burning
sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.
16
His
roots dry up below
and
his branches wither above.
17
The
memory of him perishes from the earth;
he
has no name in the land.
18
He
is driven from light into darkness
and
is banished from the world.
19
He
has no offspring or descendants among his people,
no
survivor where once he lived.
20
Men
of the west are appalled at his fate;
men
of the east are seized with horror.
21
Surely
such is the dwelling of an evil man;
such
is the place of one who knows not God."
19
1
Then
Job replied:
2
"How
long will you torment me
and
crush me with words?
3
Ten
times now you have reproached me;
shamelessly
you attack me.
4
If
it is true that I have gone astray,
my
error remains my concern alone.
5
If
indeed you would exalt yourselves above me
and
use my humiliation against me,
6
then
know that God has wronged me [17]
and
drawn his net around me.
7
"Though
I cry, `I've been wronged!' I get no response;
though
I call for help, there is no justice.
8
He
has blocked my way so I cannot pass;
he
has shrouded my paths in darkness.
9
He
has stripped me of my honor
and
removed the crown from my head.
10
He
tears me down on every side till I am gone;
he
uproots my hope like a tree.
11
His
anger burns against me;
he
counts me among his enemies.
12
His
troops advance in force;
they
build a siege ramp against me
and
encamp around my tent.
13
"He
has alienated my brothers from me;
my
acquaintances are completely estranged from me.
14
My
kinsmen have gone away;
my
friends have forgotten me.
15
My
guests and my maidservants count me a stranger;
they
look upon me as an alien.
16
I
summon my servant, but he does not answer,
though
I beg him with my own mouth.
17
My
breath is offensive to my wife;
I
am loathsome to my own brothers.
18
Even
the little boys scorn me; [18]
and
drawn his net around me.
19
All
my intimate friends detest me;
those
I love have turned against me.
20
I
am nothing but skin and bones;
I
have escaped with only the skin of my teeth. A
21
"Have
pity on me, my friends, have pity,
for
the hand of God has struck me.
22
Why
do you pursue me as God does?
Will
you never get enough of my flesh?
23
"Oh, that my words were recorded,
that
they were written on a scroll,
24
that
they were inscribed with an iron tool on
B lead,
or
engraved in rock forever!
25
I
know that my Redeemer C lives,
and
that in the end he will stand upon the earth.
D
26
And
after my skin has been destroyed,
Yet
E in F my flesh I will see God;
27
I
myself will see him
with
my own eyes--I, and not another.
How
my heart yearns within me!
28
"If
you say, `How we will hound him,
since
the root of the trouble lies in him, G' [19]
29
you
should fear the sword yourselves;
for
wrath will bring punishment by the sword,
and
then you will know that there is judgment. H" [20]
NEW
TESTAMENT: 1 CORITHIANS 16:1 -
24
16
1
Now
about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to
do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set
aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I
come no collections will have to be made. 3 Then, when I arrive, I
will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your
gift to Jerusalem. 4 If it seems advisable for me to go also, they
will accompany me.
5
After
I go through Macedonia, I will come to you--for I will be going through
Macedonia. 6 Perhaps I will stay with you awhile, or even spend the
winter, so that you can help me on my journey, wherever I go. 7 I do
not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time
with you, if the Lord permits. 8 But I will stay on at Ephesus until
Pentecost, 9 because a great door for effective work has opened to
me, and there are many who oppose me.
10
If
Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for
he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am. 11 No one,
then, should refuse to accept him. Send him on his way in peace so that he may
return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.
12
Now
about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers.
He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
13
Be
on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 14
Do everything in love.
15
You
know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they
have devoted themselves to the service of the saints. I urge you, brothers,
16 to submit to such as these and to everyone who joins in the work,
and labors at it. 17 I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and
Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. 18
For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.
19
The
churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla
A greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at
their house. 20 All the brothers here send you greetings. Greet one
another with a holy kiss.
21
I,
Paul, write this greeting in my own hand.
22
If
anyone does not love the Lord--a curse be on him. Come, O Lord B!
23
The
grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
