Of
David.
1
The
LORD is my light and my salvation--
whom
shall I fear?
The
LORD is the stronghold of my life--
of
whom shall I be afraid?
2
When
evil men advance against me
to
devour my flesh, A
when
my enemies and my foes attack me,
they
will stumble and fall.
3
Though
an army besiege me,
my
heart will not fear;
though
war break out against me,
even
then will I be confident.
4
One
thing I ask of the LORD,
this
is what I seek:
that
I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all
the days of my life,
to
gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and
to seek him in his temple.
5
For
in the day of trouble
he
will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he
will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and
set me high upon a rock.
6
Then
my head will be exalted
above
the enemies who surround me;
at
his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I
will sing and make music to the LORD.
[1]
7
Hear
my voice when I call, O LORD;
be
merciful to me and answer me.
8
My
heart says of you, "Seek his B face!"
Your
face, LORD, I will seek.
9
Do
not hide your face from me,
do
not turn your servant away in anger;
you
have been my helper.
Do
not reject me or forsake me,
O
God my Savior.
10
Though
my father and mother forsake me,
the
LORD will receive me.
11
Teach
me your way, O LORD;
lead
me in a straight path
because
of my oppressors.
12
Do
not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
for
false witnesses rise up against me,
breathing
out violence.
13
I
am still confident of this:
I
will see the goodness of the LORD
in
the land of the living.
14
Wait
for the LORD;
be
strong and take heart
and
wait for the LORD.
PSALMS: 57
1
Have
mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,
for
in you my soul takes refuge.
I
will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until
the disaster has passed.
2
I
cry out to God Most High,
to
God, who fulfills his purpose for me.
3
He
sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking
those who hotly pursue me;
Selah
God
sends his love and his faithfulness.
4
I
am in the midst of lions;
I
lie among ravenous beasts--
men
whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose
tongues are sharp swords.
5
Be
exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let
your glory be over all the earth.
6
They
spread a net for my feet--
I
was bowed down in distress.
They
dug a pit in my path--
but
they have fallen into it themselves.
Selah [2]
7
My
heart is steadfast, O God,
my
heart is steadfast;
I
will sing and make music.
8
Awake,
my soul!
Awake,
harp and lyre!
I
will awaken the dawn.
9
I
will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;
I
will sing of you among the peoples.
10
For
great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your
faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11
Be
exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let
your glory be over all the earth. [3]
PSALMS: 87
Of
the Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.
1
He
has set his foundation on the holy mountain;
2
the
LORD loves the gates of Zion
more
than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3
Glorious
things are said of you,
O
city of God:
Selah
4
"I will record Rahab A and Babylon
among
those who acknowledge me--
Philistia
too, and Tyre, along with Cush B--
and
will say, `This C
one was born in Zion.'"
5
Indeed,
of Zion it will be said,
"This one and that one were born in
her,
and
the Most High himself will establish her."
6
The
LORD will write in the register of the peoples:
"This one was born in Zion."
Selah
7
As
they make music they will sing,
"All my fountains are in you." [4]
PSALMS: 117
1
Praise
the LORD, all you nations;
extol
him, all you peoples.
2
For
great is his love toward us,
and
the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise
the LORD. A [5]
PSALMS: 147
1
Praise
the LORD. A
How
good it is to sing praises to our God,
how
pleasant and fitting to praise him!
2
The
LORD builds up Jerusalem;
he
gathers the exiles of Israel.
3
He
heals the brokenhearted
and
binds up their wounds.
4
He
determines the number of the stars
and
calls them each by name.
5
Great
is our Lord and mighty in power;
his
understanding has no limit.
6
The
LORD sustains the humble
but
casts the wicked to the ground.
7
Sing
to the LORD with thanksgiving;
make
music to our God on the harp.
8
He
covers the sky with clouds;
he
supplies the earth with rain
and
makes grass grow on the hills.
9
He
provides food for the cattle
and
for the young ravens when they call.
10
His
pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor
his delight in the legs of a man;
11
the
LORD delights in those who fear him,
who
put their hope in his unfailing love. [6]
12
Extol
the LORD, O Jerusalem;
praise
your God, O Zion,
13
for
he strengthens the bars of your gates
and
blesses your people within you.
14
He
grants peace to your borders
and
satisfies you with the finest of wheat.
15
He
sends his command to the earth;
his
word runs swiftly.
16
He
spreads the snow like wool
and
scatters the frost like ashes.
17
He
hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who
can withstand his icy blast?
18
He
sends his word and melts them;
he
stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
19
He
has revealed his word to Jacob,
his
laws and decrees to Israel.
20
He
has done this for no other nation;
they
do not know his laws.
Praise
the LORD. [7]
PROVERBS: 27
27
1
Do not boast about tomorrow,
for
you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2
Let
another praise you, and not your own mouth;
someone
else, and not your own lips.
3
Stone
is heavy and sand a burden,
but
provocation by a fool is heavier than both.
4
Anger
is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but
who can stand before jealousy?
5
Better
is open rebuke
than
hidden love.
6
Wounds
from a friend can be trusted,
but
an enemy multiplies kisses.
7
He
who is full loathes honey,
but
to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8
Like
a bird that strays from its nest
is
a man who strays from his home.
9
Perfume
and incense bring joy to the heart,
and
the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest
counsel.
10
Do
not forsake your friend and the friend of your father,
and
do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes
you--
better
a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
11
Be
wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;
then
I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. [8]
12
The
prudent see danger and take refuge,
but
the simple keep going and suffer for it.
13
Take
the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold
it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman.
14
If
a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the morning,
it
will be taken as a curse.
15
A
quarrelsome wife is like
a
constant dripping on a rainy day;
16
restraining
her is like restraining the wind
or
grasping oil with the hand.
17
As
iron sharpens iron,
so
one man sharpens another.
18
He
who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and
he who looks after his master will be honored.
19
As
water reflects a face,
so
a man's heart reflects the man.
20
Death
and Destruction A are never satisfied,
and
neither are the eyes of man.
21
The
crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but
man is tested by the praise he receives.
22
Though
you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding
him like grain with a pestle,
you
will not remove his folly from him. [9]
23
Be
sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give
careful attention to your herds;
24
for
riches do not endure forever,
and
a crown is not secure for all generations.
25
When
the hay is removed and new growth appears
and
the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26
the
lambs will provide you with clothing,
and
the goats with the price of a field.
27
You
will have plenty of goats' milk
to
feed you and your family
and
to nourish your servant girls. [10]
OLD
TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 22:1 - 24:23
22
1
An
oracle concerning the Valley of Vision:
What
troubles you now,
that
you have all gone up on the roofs,
2
O
town full of commotion,
O
city of tumult and revelry?
Your
slain were not killed by the sword,
nor
did they die in battle.
3
All
your leaders have fled together;
they
have been captured without using the bow.
All
you who were caught were taken prisoner together,
having
fled while the enemy was still far away.
4
Therefore
I said, "Turn away from me;
let
me weep bitterly.
Do
not try to console me
over
the destruction of my people."
5
The
Lord, the LORD Almighty, has a day
of
tumult and trampling and terror
in
the Valley of Vision,
a
day of battering down walls
and
of crying out to the mountains.
6
Elam
takes up the quiver,
with
her charioteers and horses;
Kir
uncovers the shield.
7
Your
choicest valleys are full of chariots,
and
horsemen are posted at the city gates; [11]
8
the defenses of Judah are stripped away.
And
you looked in that day
to
the weapons in the Palace of the Forest;
9
you
saw that the City of David
had
many breaches in its defenses;
you
stored up water
in
the Lower Pool.
10
You
counted the buildings in Jerusalem
and
tore down houses to strengthen the wall.
11
You
built a reservoir between the two walls
for
the water of the Old Pool,
but
you did not look to the One who made it,
or
have regard for the One who planned it long ago.
12
The
Lord, the LORD Almighty,
called
you on that day
to
weep and to wail,
to
tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.
13
But
see, there is joy and revelry,
slaughtering
of cattle and killing of sheep,
eating
of meat and drinking of wine!
"Let
us eat and drink," you say,
"for
tomorrow we die!" [12]
14
The
LORD Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: "Till
your dying day this sin will not be atoned for," says the Lord, the LORD
Almighty.
15
This
is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says:
"Go, say to this steward,
to
Shebna, who is in charge of the palace:
16
What are you doing here and who gave you permission
to
cut out a grave for yourself here,
hewing
your grave on the height
and
chiseling your resting place in the rock?
17
"Beware, the LORD is about to take firm hold of you
and
hurl you away, O you mighty man.
18
He will roll you up tightly like a ball
and
throw you into a large country.
There
you will die
and
there your splendid chariots will remain--
you
disgrace to your master's house!
19
I will depose you from your office,
and
you will be ousted from your position.
20
"In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of
Hilkiah. 21 I will clothe him with
your robe and fasten your sash around him [13] and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to
those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David;
what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
23 I will drive him like a peg into
a firm place; he will be a seatA of honor for the house of his
father. 24 All the glory of his
family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots--all its lesser vessels,
from the bowls to all the jars.
25
"In that day,"
declares the LORD Almighty, "the peg driven into the
firm place will give way; it will be sheared off and will fall, and the load
hanging on it will be cut down." The LORD has spoken.
23
1
An
oracle concerning Tyre:
Wail,
O ships of Tarshish!
For
Tyre is destroyed
and
left without house or harbor.
From
the land of Cyprus A
word
has come to them.
2
Be
silent, you people of the island
and
you merchants of Sidon,
whom
the seafarers have enriched.
3
On
the great waters
came
the grain of the Shihor; [14]
the
harvest of the Nile B was the revenue of Tyre,
and
she became the marketplace of the nations.
4
Be
ashamed, O Sidon, and you, O fortress of the sea,
for
the sea has spoken:
"I
have neither been in labor nor given birth;
I
have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters."
5
When
word comes to Egypt,
they
will be in anguish at the report from Tyre.
6
Cross
over to Tarshish;
wail,
you people of the island.
7
Is
this your city of revelry,
the
old, old city,
whose
feet have taken her
to
settle in far-off lands?
8
Who
planned this against Tyre,
the
bestower of crowns,
whose
merchants are princes,
whose
traders are renowned in the earth?
9
The
LORD Almighty planned it,
to
bring low the pride of all glory
and
to humble all who are renowned on the earth.
10
Till
C your land as along the Nile,
O
Daughter of Tarshish, [15]
for
you no longer have a harbor.
11
The
LORD has stretched out his hand over the sea
and
made its kingdoms tremble.
He
has given an order concerning Phoenicia D
that
her fortresses be destroyed.
12
He
said, "No more of your reveling,
O
Virgin Daughter of Sidon, now crushed!
"Up,
cross over to Cyprus E;
even
there you will find no rest."
13
Look
at the land of the Babylonians, F
this
people that is now of no account!
The
Assyrians have made it
a
place for desert creatures;
they
raised up their siege towers,
they
stripped its fortresses bare
and
turned it into a ruin.
14
Wail,
you ships of Tarshish;
your
fortress is destroyed!
15
At
that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king's life.
But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of
the prostitute:
16
"Take
up a harp, walk through the city,
O
prostitute forgotten; [16]
play
the harp well, sing many a song,
so
that you will be remembered."
17
At
the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her
hire as a prostitute and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of
the earth.
18
Yet
her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the LORD; they will not be
stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the LORD, for
abundant food and fine clothes.
24
1
See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth
and
devastate it;
he
will ruin its face
and
scatter its inhabitants--
2
it
will be the same
for
priest as for people,
for
master as for servant,
for
mistress as for maid,
for
seller as for buyer,
for
borrower as for lender,
for
debtor as for creditor.
3
The
earth will be completely laid waste
and
totally plundered.
The
LORD has spoken this word.
4
The
earth dries up and withers,
the
world languishes and withers, [17]
the
exalted of the earth languish.
5
The
earth is defiled by its people;
they
have disobeyed the laws,
violated
the statutes
and
broken the everlasting covenant.
6
Therefore
a curse consumes the earth;
its
people must bear their guilt.
Therefore
earth's inhabitants are burned up,
and
very few are left.
7
The
new wine dries up and the vine withers;
all
the merrymakers groan.
8
The
gaiety of the tambourines is stilled,
the
noise of the revelers has stopped,
the
joyful harp is silent.
9
No
longer do they drink wine with a song;
the
beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10
The
ruined city lies desolate;
the
entrance to every house is barred.
11
In
the streets they cry out for wine;
all
joy turns to gloom,
all
gaiety is banished from the earth.
12
The
city is left in ruins,
its
gate is battered to pieces.
13
So
will it be on the earth
and
among the nations,
as
when an olive tree is beaten, [18]
or
as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
14
They
raise their voices, they shout for joy;
from
the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty.
15
Therefore
in the east give glory to the LORD;
exalt
the name of the LORD, the God of Israel,
in
the islands of the sea.
16
From
the ends of the earth we hear singing:
"Glory
to the Righteous One."
But
I said, "I waste away, I waste away!
Woe
to me!
The
treacherous betray!
With
treachery the treacherous betray!"
17
Terror
and pit and snare await you,
O
people of the earth.
18
Whoever
flees at the sound of terror
will
fall into a pit;
whoever
climbs out of the pit
will
be caught in a snare.
The
floodgates of the heavens are opened,
the
foundations of the earth shake.
19
The
earth is broken up,
the
earth is split asunder,
the
earth is thoroughly shaken. [19]
20
The
earth reels like a drunkard,
it
sways like a hut in the wind;
so
heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion
that
it falls--never to rise again.
21
In
that day the LORD will punish
the
powers in the heavens above
and
the kings on the earth below.
22
They
will be herded together
like
prisoners bound in a dungeon;
they
will be shut up in prison
and
be punished A after many days.
23
The
moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed;
for
the LORD Almighty will reign
on
Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and
before its elders, gloriously. [20]
NEW
TESTAMENT: GALATIANS 2:17 -
3:9
17
"If,
while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves
are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18
If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. 19
For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ
lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of
God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for
nothing!" D
3
1
You
foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was
clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one
thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing
what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the
Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? 4
Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing?
5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because
you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?
6
Consider
Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to
him as righteousness." A 7Understand, then, that
those who believe are children of Abraham. 8 The Scripture foresaw
that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in
advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed
through you." B 9 So those [21]who
have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. [22]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
