They
are corrupt, their deeds are vile;

The
LORD looks down from heaven
on
the sons of men
to
see if there are any who understand,
any
who seek God.
3
All
have turned aside,
they
have together become corrupt;
there
is no one who does good,
not
even one.
4
Will
evildoers never learn--
those
who devour my people as men eat bread
and
who do not call on the LORD?
5
There
they are, overwhelmed with dread,
for
God is present in the company of the righteous.
6
You
evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
but
the LORD is their refuge.
7
Oh,
that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When
the LORD restores the fortunes of his people,
let
Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! [1]

We
have heard with our ears, O God;
our
fathers have told us
what
you did in their days,
in
days long ago.
2
With
your hand you drove out the nations
and
planted our fathers;
you
crushed the peoples
and
made our fathers flourish.
3
It
was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor
did their arm bring them victory;
it
was your right hand, your arm,
and
the light of your face, for you loved them.
4
You
are my King and my God,
who
decrees B victories for Jacob.
5
Through
you we push back our enemies;
through
your name we trample our foes.
6
I
do not trust in my bow,
my
sword does not bring me victory;
7
but
you give us victory over our enemies,
you
put our adversaries to shame.

In
God we make our boast all day long,

we will praise your name forever.

But
now you have rejected and humbled us;

no longer go out with our armies.

You
made us retreat before the enemy,
and

You
have made us a reproach to our neighbors,

scorn and derision of those around us.

My
disgrace is before me all day long,
and
my face is covered with shame

at
the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,
because
of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17
All
this happened to us,
though
we had not forgotten you
or
been false to your covenant.
18 Our
hearts had not turned back;
our
feet had not strayed from your path.
19
But
you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals
and
covered us over with deep darkness.
20
If
we had forgotten the name of our God
or
spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21
would
not God have discovered it,
since
he knows the secrets of the heart?
22
Yet
for your sake we face death all day long;
we
are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23
Awake,
O Lord! Why do you sleep?
Rouse
yourself! Do not reject us forever. [3]
24
Why
do you hide your face
and
forget our misery and oppression?
25
We
are brought down to the dust;
our
bodies cling to the ground.
26
Rise
up and help us;
redeem
us because of your unfailing love. [4]

A

1
Why
have you rejected us forever, O God?
Why
does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
2
Remember
the people you purchased of old,
the
tribe of your inheritance, whom you redeemed--
Mount
Zion, where you dwelt.
3
Turn
your steps toward these everlasting ruins,
all
this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4
Your
foes roared in the place where you met with us;
they
set up their standards as signs.
5
They
behaved like men wielding axes
to
cut through a thicket of trees.
6
They
smashed all the carved paneling
with
their axes and hatchets.
7
They
burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they
defiled the dwelling place of your Name.
8
They
said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!"
They
burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9
We
are given no miraculous signs;
no
prophets are left,
and
none of us knows how long this will be.
10
How
long will the enemy mock you, O God?
Will
the foe revile your name forever?
11
Why
do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take
it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!
12
But
you, O God, are my king from of old;
you
bring salvation upon the earth. [5]
13
It
was you who split open the sea by your power;
you
broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
14
It
was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
and
gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.
15
It
was you who opened up springs and streams;
you
dried up the ever flowing rivers.
16
The
day is yours, and yours also the night;
you
established the sun and moon.
17
It
was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
you
made both summer and winter.
18
Remember
how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD,
how
foolish people have reviled your name.
19
Do
not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;
do
not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.
20
Have
regard for your covenant,
because
haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
21
Do
not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;
may
the poor and needy praise your name.
22
Rise
up, O God, and defend your cause;
remember
how fools mock you all day long.
23
Do
not ignore the clamor of your adversaries,
the
uproar of your enemies, which rises continually. [6]

Praise
the LORD, O my soul.
O
LORD my God, you are very great;
you
are clothed with splendor and majesty.
2
He
wraps himself in light as with a garment;
he
stretches out the heavens like a tent
3
and
lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters.
He
makes the clouds his chariot
and
rides on the wings of the wind.
4
He
makes winds his messengers, A
flames
of fire his servants.
5
He
set the earth on its foundations;
it
can never be moved.
6
You
covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the
waters stood above the mountains.
7
But
at your rebuke the waters fled,
at
the sound of your thunder they took to flight;
8
they
flowed over the mountains,
they
went down into the valleys,
to
the place you assigned for them.
9
You
set a boundary they cannot cross;
never
again will they cover the earth.
10
He
makes springs pour water into the ravines;
it
flows between the mountains.
11
They
give water to all the beasts of the field;
the
wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12
The
birds of the air nest by the waters;
they
sing among the branches.
13
He
waters the mountains from his upper chambers;
the
earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work.

He
makes grass grow for the cattle,
and
plants for man to cultivate--
bringing
forth food from the earth: [7]

wine
that gladdens the heart of man,
oil
to make his face shine,
and
bread that sustains his heart.

The
trees of the LORD are well watered,
the
cedars of Lebanon that he planted.

There
the birds make their nests;

stork has its home in the pine trees.

The
high mountains belong to the wild goats;
the
crags are a refuge for the coneys. B

The
moon marks off the seasons,
and
the sun knows when to go down.

You
bring darkness, it becomes night,
and
all the beasts of the forest prowl.

The
lions roar for their prey
and
seek their food from God.

The
sun rises, and they steal away;

return and lie down in their dens.

Then
man goes out to his work,
to
his labor until evening.

How
many are your works, O LORD!
In
wisdom you made them all;
the
earth is full of your creatures.
25
There
is the sea, vast and spacious,
teeming
with creatures beyond number--
living
things both large and small.

There
the ships go to and fro,
and
the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. [8]
27
These
all look to you
to
give them their food at the proper time.

When
you give it to them,
they
gather it up;
when
you open your hand,
they
are satisfied with good things.

When
you hide your face,
they
are terrified;
when
you take away their breath,
they
die and return to the dust.

you send your Spirit,
they
are created,
and
you renew the face of the earth.

May
the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may
the LORD rejoice in his works--

he
who looks at the earth, and it trembles,

touches the mountains, and they smoke.

I
will sing to the LORD all my life;

will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

May
my meditation be pleasing to him,
as
I rejoice in the LORD.

PROVERBS: 14

1
The wise woman builds her house,
but
with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

He
whose walk is upright fears the LORD,
but
he whose ways are devious despises him.

A
fool's talk brings a rod to his back,
but
the lips of the wise protect them.
4
Where
there are no oxen, the manger is empty,
but
from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.

A
truthful witness does not deceive,
but
a false witness pours out lies.

The
mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,
but
knowledge comes easily to the discerning.

Stay
away from a foolish man,
for
you will not find knowledge on his lips.

The
wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but
the folly of fools is deception.

Fools
mock at making amends for sin,
but
goodwill is found among the upright.

Each
heart knows its own bitterness,

no one else can share its joy.

1
The
words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the
territory of Benjamin. 2 The word of the LORD came to him in the
thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah, 3
and through the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, down to
the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah,
when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.
4
The
word of the LORD came to me, saying,
5
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew
A you,
before
you were born I set you apart;
I
appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
6
"Ah,
Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child."
7
But
the LORD said to me, "Do not say, `I am only a child.'
You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.
8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am
with you and will rescue you," declares the LORD.
9
Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, "Now, I
have put my words in your mouth. 10
See,
today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to
destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant."
11
The
word of the LORD came to me: "What do you see,
Jeremiah?"
"I
see the branch of an almond tree," I replied.
12
The
LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am
watching B to see that my word is
fulfilled."
13
The
word of the LORD came to me again: "What do you
see?"
"I
see a boiling pot, tilting away from the north," I answered.
14
The
LORD said to me, "From the north disaster will be
poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern
kingdoms," declares the LORD.
"Their kings will come and set up their thrones
in
the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they
will come against all her surrounding walls
16
I will pronounce my judgments on my people
because
of their wickedness in forsaking me,
in
burning incense to other gods
and
in worshiping what their hands have made.
17
"Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be
terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18
Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to
stand against the whole land--against the kings of Judah, its officials, its
priests and the people of the land.
19 They
will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will
rescue you," declares the LORD.

word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Go and
proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem:
"`I
remember the devotion of your youth,
how
as a bride you loved me
and
followed me through the desert,
through
a land not sown.
3
Israel was holy to the LORD,
the
firstfruits of his harvest;
all
who devoured her were held guilty,
and
disaster overtook them,'"
declares
the LORD.
4
Hear
the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, [16]
all
you clans of the house of Israel.
5
This
is what the LORD says:
"What fault did your fathers find in me,
that
they strayed so far from me?
They
followed worthless idols
and
became worthless themselves.
6
They did not ask, `Where is the LORD,
who
brought us up out of Egypt
and
led us through the barren wilderness,
through
a land of deserts and rifts,
a
land of drought and darkness, A
a
land where no one travels and no one lives?'
7
I brought you into a fertile land
to
eat its fruit and rich produce.
But
you came and defiled my land
and
made my inheritance detestable.
8
The priests did not ask,
`Where
is the LORD?'
Those
who deal with the law did not know me;
the
leaders rebelled against me.
The
prophets prophesied by Baal,
following
worthless idols.
declares
the LORD.
"And I will bring charges against your children's children.

Cross over to the coasts of Kittim B
and look,
send
to Kedar C
and observe closely;
see
if there has ever been anything like this:
11
Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet
they are not gods at all.)
But
my people have exchanged their D

for
worthless idols.
12
Be appalled at this, O heavens,
and
shudder with great horror,"
declares
the LORD.
13
"My people have committed two sins:
They
have forsaken me,
the
spring of living water,
and
have dug their own cisterns,
broken
cisterns that cannot hold water.
14
Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth?
Why
then has he become plunder?
15
Lions have roared;
they
have growled at him.
They
have laid waste his land;
his
towns are burned and deserted.

Have you not brought this on yourselves
by
forsaking the LORD your God
when
he led you in the way?
18
Now why go to Egypt
to

Consider
then and realize
how
evil and bitter it is for you

you forsake the LORD your God

have no awe of me,"

"Long ago you broke off your yoke
and
tore off your bonds;

said, `I will not serve you!'
Indeed,
on every high hill
and
under every spreading tree
you
lay down as a prostitute.

I had planted you like a choice vine
of
sound and reliable stock.
How
then did you turn against me
into
a corrupt, wild vine?

Although you wash yourself with soda
and
use an abundance of soap,
the
stain of your guilt is still before me,"
declares
the Sovereign LORD.

"How can you say, `I am not defiled;
I
have not run after the Baals'?
See
how you behaved in the valley;
consider
what you have done.
You
are a swift she-camel
running
here and there,
24
a wild donkey accustomed to the desert,
sniffing
the wind in her craving--
in
her heat who can restrain her?
Any
males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at
mating time they will find her.
25
Do not run until your feet are bare
and
your throat is dry.
But
you said, `It's no use!
I
love foreign gods,
and
I must go after them.'
26
"As a thief is disgraced when he is caught,
so
the house of Israel is disgraced--
they,
their kings and their officials,
their
priests and their prophets.
27
They say to wood, `You are my father,'
They
have turned their backs to me
and
not their faces;
yet
when they are in trouble, they say,
`Come
and save us!'
28
Where then are the gods you made for yourselves?
Let
them come if they can save you
when
you are in trouble!
For
you have as many gods
as
you have towns, O Judah.
29
"Why do you bring charges against me?
You
have all rebelled against me,"
declares
the LORD.
30
"In vain I punished your people;
they
did not respond to correction.
Your
sword has devoured your prophets
like
a ravening lion.

my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you
should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!

Yes,
and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, A help these women who have
contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest

Rejoice
in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your
gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious

received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of

rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me.
Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be
content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in
need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being
content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living
in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me
strength.

Yet
it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you
Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I
set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving
and receiving, except you only;

for
even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in
need. 17 Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what
may be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and
even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the
gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing
to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his
glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

To
our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. [22]
