PSALMS: 10

¹Why, ^A O LORD, do you stand far off?

Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

²In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,

who are caught in the schemes he devises.

³He boasts of the cravings of his heart;

he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.

⁴In his pride the wicked does not seek him;

in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

⁵His ways are always prosperous;

he is haughty and your laws are far from him;

he sneers at all his enemies.

⁶He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me;

I'll always be happy and never have trouble."

⁷His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats;

trouble and evil are under his tongue.

⁸He lies in wait near the villages;

from ambush he murders the innocent,

watching in secret for his victims.

⁹He lies in wait like a lion in cover;

he lies in wait to catch the helpless;

he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

¹⁰His victims are crushed, they collapse;

they fall under his strength.

¹¹He says to himself, "God has forgotten;

he covers his face and never sees." ¹

¹²Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God.

Do not forget the helpless.

¹³Why does the wicked man revile God?

Why does he say to himself,

"He won't call me to account"?

¹⁴But you, O God, do see trouble and grief;

you consider it to take it in hand.

The victim commits himself to you;

you are the helper of the fatherless.

¹⁵Break the arm of the wicked and evil man;

call him to account for his wickedness

that would not be found out.

¹⁶The LORD is King for ever and ever;

the nations will perish from his land.

¹⁷You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted;

you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,

¹⁸defending the fatherless and the oppressed,

in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more. ²

PSALMS: 40

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

¹I waited patiently for the LORD;

he turned to me and heard my cry.

²He lifted me out of the slimy pit,

out of the mud and mire;

he set my feet on a rock

and gave me a firm place to stand.

³He put a new song in my mouth,

a hymn of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear

and put their trust in the LORD.

⁴Blessed is the man

who makes the LORD his trust,

who does not look to the proud,

to those who turn aside to false gods. ^A

⁵Many, O LORD my God,

are the wonders you have done.

The things you planned for us

no one can recount to you;

were I to speak and tell of them,

they would be too many to declare.

⁶Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,

but my ears you have pierced ^BC;

burnt offerings and sin offerings

you did not require.

⁷Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--

it is written about me in the scroll. ^D ³

⁸I desire to do your will, O my God;

your law is within my heart."

⁹I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;

I do not seal my lips,

as you know, O LORD.

¹⁰I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;

I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.

I do not conceal your love and your truth

from the great assembly.

¹¹Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD;

may your love and your truth always protect me.

¹²For troubles without number surround me;

my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.

They are more than the hairs of my head,

and my heart fails within me.

¹³Be pleased, O LORD, to save me;

O LORD, come quickly to help me.

¹⁴May all who seek to take my life

be put to shame and confusion;

may all who desire my ruin

be turned back in disgrace.

¹⁵May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"

be appalled at their own shame.

¹⁶But may all who seek you

rejoice and be glad in you;

may those who love your salvation always say,

"The LORD be exalted!" ⁴

¹⁷Yet I am poor and needy;

may the Lord think of me.

You are my help and my deliverer;

O my God, do not delay. ⁵

PSALMS: 70

¹Hasten, O God, to save me;

O LORD, come quickly to help me.

²May those who seek my life

be put to shame and confusion;

may all who desire my ruin

be turned back in disgrace.

³May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"

turn back because of their shame.

⁴But may all who seek you

rejoice and be glad in you;

may those who love your salvation always say,

"Let God be exalted!"

⁵Yet I am poor and needy;

come quickly to me, O God.

You are my help and my deliverer;

O LORD, do not delay. ⁶

PSALMS: 100

A psalm. For giving thanks.

¹Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

²Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs.

³Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his ^A;

we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

⁴Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with praise;

give thanks to him and praise his name.

⁵For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

his faithfulness continues through all generations. ⁷

PSALMS: 130

A song of ascents.

¹Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;

²O Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

to my cry for mercy.

³If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,

O Lord, who could stand?

⁴But with you there is forgiveness;

therefore you are feared.

⁵I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,

and in his word I put my hope.

⁶My soul waits for the Lord

more than watchmen wait for the morning,

more than watchmen wait for the morning.

⁷O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,

for with the LORD is unfailing love

and with him is full redemption.

⁸He himself will redeem Israel

from all their sins. ⁸

PROVERBS: 10

10 ¹The proverbs of Solomon:

A wise son brings joy to his father,

but a foolish son grief to his mother.

²Ill-gotten treasures are of no value,

but righteousness delivers from death.

³The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry

but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

⁴Lazy hands make a man poor,

but diligent hands bring wealth.

⁵He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,

but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

⁶Blessings crown the head of the righteous,

but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. ^A

⁷The memory of the righteous will be a blessing,

but the name of the wicked will rot.

⁸The wise in heart accept commands,

but a chattering fool comes to ruin.

⁹The man of integrity walks securely,

but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

¹⁰He who winks maliciously causes grief,

and a chattering fool comes to ruin.

¹¹The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,

but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. ⁹

¹²Hatred stirs up dissension,

but love covers over all wrongs.

¹³Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,

but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.

¹⁴Wise men store up knowledge,

but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.

¹⁵The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,

but poverty is the ruin of the poor.

¹⁶The wages of the righteous bring them life,

but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.

¹⁷He who heeds discipline shows the way to life,

but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

¹⁸He who conceals his hatred has lying lips,

and whoever spreads slander is a fool.

¹⁹When words are many, sin is not absent,

but he who holds his tongue is wise.

²⁰The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,

but the heart of the wicked is of little value.

²¹The lips of the righteous nourish many,

but fools die for lack of judgment.

²²The blessing of the LORD brings wealth,

and he adds no trouble to it. ¹⁰

²³A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct,

but a man of understanding delights in wisdom.

²⁴What the wicked dreads will overtake him;

what the righteous desire will be granted.

²⁵When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,

but the righteous stand firm forever.

²⁶As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,

so is a sluggard to those who send him.

²⁷The fear of the LORD adds length to life,

but the years of the wicked are cut short.

²⁸The prospect of the righteous is joy,

but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.

²⁹The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous,

but it is the ruin of those who do evil.

³⁰The righteous will never be uprooted,

but the wicked will not remain in the land.

³¹The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,

but a perverse tongue will be cut out.

³²The lips of the righteous know what is fitting,

but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. ¹¹

OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 57:15 - 59:21

¹⁵For this is what the high and lofty One says--

he who lives forever, whose name is holy:

"I live in a high and holy place,

but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,

to revive the spirit of the lowly

and to revive the heart of the contrite.

¹⁶ I will not accuse forever,

nor will I always be angry,

for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me--

the breath of man that I have created.

¹⁷ I was enraged by his sinful greed;

I punished him, and hid my face in anger,

yet he kept on in his willful ways.

¹⁸ I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;

I will guide him and restore comfort to him,

¹⁹ creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel.

Peace, peace, to those far and near,"

says the LORD. "And I will heal them."

²⁰But the wicked are like the tossing sea,

which cannot rest,

whose waves cast up mire and mud.

²¹"There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

58 ¹ "Shout it aloud, do not hold back.

Raise your voice like a trumpet. ¹²

Declare to my people their rebellion

and to the house of Jacob their sins.

² For day after day they seek me out;

they seem eager to know my ways,

as if they were a nation that does what is right

and has not forsaken the commands of its God.

They ask me for just decisions

and seem eager for God to come near them.

³ `Why have we fasted,' they say,

`and you have not seen it?

Why have we humbled ourselves,

and you have not noticed?'

"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please

and exploit all your workers.

⁴ Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,

and in striking each other with wicked fists.

You cannot fast as you do today

and expect your voice to be heard on high.

⁵ Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,

only a day for a man to humble himself?

Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed

and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?

Is that what you call a fast,

a day acceptable to the LORD? ¹³

⁶ "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

to loose the chains of injustice

and untie the cords of the yoke,

to set the oppressed free

and break every yoke?

⁷ Is it not to share your food with the hungry

and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter--

when you see the naked, to clothe him,

and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

⁸ Then your light will break forth like the dawn,

and your healing will quickly appear;

then your righteousness ^A will go before you,

and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

⁹Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;

you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,

with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

¹⁰ and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry

and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,

then your light will rise in the darkness,

and your night will become like the noonday.

¹¹ The LORD will guide you always;

he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land

and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring whose waters never fail. ¹⁴

¹² Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins

and will raise up the age-old foundations;

you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

¹³"If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath

and from doing as you please on my holy day,

if you call the Sabbath a delight

and the LORD's holy day honorable,

and if you honor it by not going your own way

and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

¹⁴ then you will find your joy in the LORD,

and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land

and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob."

The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

59 ¹ Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save,

nor his ear too dull to hear.

²But your iniquities have separated

you from your God;

your sins have hidden his face from you,

so that he will not hear.

³For your hands are stained with blood,

your fingers with guilt.

Yand your tongue mutters wicked things.

⁴No one calls for justice;

no one pleads his case with integrity.

They rely on empty arguments and speak lies;

they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.

⁵They hatch the eggs of vipers

and spin a spider's web.

Whoever eats their eggs will die,

and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.

⁶Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;

they cannot cover themselves with what they make.

Their deeds are evil deeds,

and acts of violence are in their hands.

⁷Their feet rush into sin;

they are swift to shed innocent blood.

Their thoughts are evil thoughts;

ruin and destruction mark their ways.

⁸The way of peace they do not know;

there is no justice in their paths.

They have turned them into crooked roads;

no one who walks in them will know peace.

⁹So justice is far from us,

and righteousness does not reach us.

We look for light, but all is darkness;

for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows. ¹⁵

our lips have spoken lies, ¹⁶

¹⁰Like the blind we grope along the wall,

feeling our way like men without eyes.

At midday we stumble as if it were twilight;

among the strong, we are like the dead.

¹¹We all growl like bears;

we moan mournfully like doves.

We look for justice, but find none;

for deliverance, but it is far away.

¹²For our offenses are many in your sight,

and our sins testify against us.

Our offenses are ever with us,

and we acknowledge our iniquities:

¹³rebellion and treachery against the LORD,

turning our backs on our God,

fomenting oppression and revolt,

uttering lies our hearts have conceived.

¹⁴So justice is driven back,

and righteousness stands at a distance;

truth has stumbled in the streets,

honesty cannot enter.

¹⁵Truth is nowhere to be found,

and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

The LORD looked and was displeased

that there was no justice. ¹⁷

¹⁶He saw that there was no one,

he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;

so his own arm worked salvation for him,

and his own righteousness sustained him.

¹⁷He put on righteousness as his breastplate,

and the helmet of salvation on his head;

he put on the garments of vengeance

and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak.

¹⁸According to what they have done,

so will he repay

wrath to his enemies

and retribution to his foes;

he will repay the islands their due.

¹⁹From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD,

and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory.

For he will come like a pent-up flood

that the breath of the LORD drives along. ^A

²⁰"The Redeemer will come to Zion,

to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,"

declares the LORD.

²¹"As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD. ¹⁸

NEW TESTAMENT: PHILIPIANS 1:1 - 26

1 ¹Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,

To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers ^A and deacons:

²Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

³I thank my God every time I remember you. ⁴In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy ⁵because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

⁶being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

⁷It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. ⁸God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

⁹And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, ¹⁰so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, ¹¹filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

¹²Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. ¹³As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard ^B and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. ¹⁴Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.

¹⁵It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.

¹⁶The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.

¹⁷The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. ^C ¹⁸But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, ¹⁹for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. ^D ²⁰I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. ²¹For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. ²²If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! ²³I am torn between the two: I desire to depart ¹⁹ and be with Christ, which is better by far; ²⁴but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. ²⁵Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, ²⁶so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me. ²⁰

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
