PROVERBS: 26
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 19:1 – 21:17
NEW TESTAMENT: GALATIANS 2:1 - 16
PSALMS: 26
Of
David.
1
Vindicate me, O LORD,
for
I have led a blameless life;
I
have trusted in the LORD
without
wavering.
2
Test me, O LORD, and try me,
examine
my heart and my mind;
3
for your love is ever before me,
and
I walk continually in your truth.
4
I do not sit with deceitful men,
nor
do I consort with hypocrites;
5
I abhor the assembly of evildoers
and
refuse to sit with the wicked.
6
I wash my hands in innocence,
and
go about your altar, O LORD,
7
proclaiming aloud your praise
and
telling of all your wonderful deeds.
8
I love the house where you live, O LORD,
the
place where your glory dwells.
9
Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
my
life with bloodthirsty men,
10
in whose hands are wicked schemes,
whose
right hands are full of bribes.
11
But I lead a blameless life;
redeem
me and be merciful to me.
12 My
feet stand on level ground;
in
the great assembly I will praise the LORD. [1]
PSALMS: 56
For
the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of
David. A miktam. A When the Philistines had seized him in
Gath.
1
Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me;
all
day long they press their attack.
2
My slanderers pursue me all day long;
many
are attacking me in their pride.
3
When I am afraid,
I
will trust in you.
4
In God, whose word I praise,
in
God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can mortal man do to me?
5
All day long they twist my words;
they
are always plotting to harm me.
6
They conspire, they lurk,
they
watch my steps,
eager
to take my life.
7
On no account let them escape;
in
your anger, O God, bring down the nations.
8
Record my lament;
list
my tears on your scrollB--
are
they not in your record?
9
Then my enemies will turn back
when
I call for help.
By
this I will know that God is for me.
10
In God, whose word I praise,
in
the LORD, whose word I praise--
11
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What
can man do to me? [2]
12
I am under vows to you, O God;
I
will present my thank offerings to you.
13
For you have delivered me C from death
and
my feet from stumbling,
that
I may walk before God
in
the light of life. D [3]
PSALMS: 86
A
prayer of David.
1
Hear, O LORD, and answer me,
for
I am poor and needy.
2
Guard my life, for I am devoted to you.
You
are my God; save your servant
who
trusts in you.
3
Have mercy on me, O Lord,
for
I call to you all day long.
4
Bring joy to your servant,
for
to you, O Lord,
I
lift up my soul.
5
You are forgiving and good, O Lord,
abounding
in love to all who call to you.
6
Hear my prayer, O LORD;
listen
to my cry for mercy.
7
In the day of my trouble I will call to you,
for
you will answer me.
8
Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord;
no
deeds can compare with yours.
9
All the nations you have made
will
come and worship before you, O Lord;
they
will bring glory to your name.
10
For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
you
alone are God. [4]
11
Teach me your way, O LORD,
and
I will walk in your truth;
give
me an undivided heart,
that
I may fear your name.
12
I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;
I
will glorify your name forever.
13
For great is your love toward me;
you
have delivered me from the depths of the grave. A
14
The arrogant are attacking me, O God;
a
band of ruthless men seeks my life--
men
without regard for you.
15
But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow
to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
16
Turn to me and have mercy on me;
grant
your strength to your servant
and
save the son of your maidservant. B
17
Give me a sign of your goodness,
that
my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for
you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me. [5]
PSALMS: 116
1
I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he
heard my cry for mercy.
2
Because he turned his ear to me,
I
will call on him as long as I live.
3
The cords of death entangled me,
the
anguish of the grave A came upon me;
I
was overcome by trouble and sorrow.
4
Then I called on the name of the LORD:
"O
LORD, save me!"
5
The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our
God is full of compassion.
6
The LORD protects the simplehearted;
when
I was in great need, he saved me.
7
Be at rest once more, O my soul,
for
the LORD has been good to you.
8
For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
my
eyes from tears,
my
feet from stumbling,
9
that I may walk before the LORD
in
the land of the living.
10
I believed; therefore B I said,
"I
am greatly afflicted."
11
And in my dismay I said,
"All
men are liars."
12
How can I repay the LORD
for
all his goodness to me?
13
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and
call on the name of the LORD.
14
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people. [6]
15
Precious in the sight of the LORD
is
the death of his saints.
16
O LORD, truly I am your servant;
I
am your servant, the son of your maidservant C;
you
have freed me from my chains.
17
I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
and
call on the name of the LORD.
18
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in
the presence of all his people,
19
in the courts of the house of the LORD--
in
your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise
the LORD. D [7]
PSALMS: 146
1
Praise the LORD. A
Praise
the LORD, O my soul.
2
I will praise the LORD all my life;
I
will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
3
Do not put your trust in princes,
in
mortal men, who cannot save.
4
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on
that very day their plans come to nothing.
5
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose
hope is in the LORD his God,
6the
Maker of heaven and earth,
the
sea, and everything in them--
the
LORD, who remains faithful forever.
7
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and
gives food to the hungry.
The
LORD sets prisoners free,
8
the LORD gives sight to the blind,
the
LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the
LORD loves the righteous.
9
The LORD watches over the alien
and
sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but
he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10
The LORD reigns forever,
your
God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise
the LORD. [8]
PROVERBS: 26
26
1 Like snow in summer or
rain in harvest,
honor
is not fitting for a fool.
2
Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,
an
undeserved curse does not come to rest.
3
A whip for the horse, a halter for the donkey,
and
a rod for the backs of fools!
4
Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
or
you will be like him yourself.
5
Answer a fool according to his folly,
or
he will be wise in his own eyes.
6
Like cutting off one's feet or drinking violence
is
the sending of a message by the hand of a fool.
7
Like a lame man's legs that hang limp
is
a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
8
Like tying a stone in a sling
is
the giving of honor to a fool.
9
Like a thornbush in a drunkard's hand
is
a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
10
Like an archer who wounds at random
is
he who hires a fool or any passer-by.
11
As a dog returns to its vomit,
so
a fool repeats his folly.
There
is more hope for a fool than for him.
13
The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road,
a
fierce lion roaming the streets!"
14
As a door turns on its hinges,
so
a sluggard turns on his bed.
15
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
16
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes
than
seven men who answer discreetly.
17
Like one who seizes a dog by the ears
is
a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own.
18
Like a madman shooting
firebrands
or deadly arrows
19
is a man who deceives his neighbor
and
says, "I was only joking!"
20
Without wood a fire goes out;
without
gossip a quarrel dies down.
21
As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire,
so
is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. [10]
22
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they
go down to a man's inmost parts.
23
Like a coating of glaze A over earthenware
are
fervent lips with an evil heart.
24
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips,
but
in his heart he harbors deceit.
25
Though his speech is charming, do not believe him,
for
seven abominations fill his heart.
26
His malice may be concealed by deception,
but
his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27
If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it;
if
a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him.
28
A lying tongue hates those it hurts,
and
a flattering mouth works ruin. [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 19:1 – 21:17
19 1 An oracle concerning
Egypt:
See, the LORD rides on a
swift cloud
and is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt
tremble before him,
and the hearts of the
Egyptians melt within them.
2 "I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian--
brother will
fight against brother,
neighbor
against neighbor,
city against
city,
kingdom
against kingdom.
3 The
Egyptians will lose heart,
and I will
bring their plans to nothing;
they will
consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
the mediums
and the spiritists.
4 I will hand
the Egyptians over
to the power
of a cruel master,
and a fierce
king will rule over them,"
declares the Lord, the
LORD Almighty.
5 The waters of the river
will dry up,
and the riverbed will be
parched and dry.
6 The canals will stink;
the streams of Egypt
will dwindle and dry up.
The reeds and rushes
will wither,
7 also the plants along the Nile, [12]
at the mouth of the
river.
Every sown field along
the Nile
will become parched,
will blow away and be no more.
8 The fishermen will groan
and lament,
all who cast hooks into
the Nile;
those who throw nets on
the water
will pine away.
9 Those who work with
combed flax will despair,
the weavers of fine
linen will lose hope.
10 The workers in cloth
will be dejected,
and all the wage earners
will be sick at heart.
11 The officials of Zoan
are nothing but fools;
the wise counselors of
Pharaoh give senseless advice.
How can you say to
Pharaoh,
"I am one of the
wise men,
a disciple of the
ancient kings"?
12 Where are your wise men
now?
Let them show you and
make known
what the LORD Almighty
has planned against
Egypt.
13 The officials of Zoan
have become fools,
the leaders of Memphis A
are deceived;
the cornerstones of her
peoples
have led Egypt astray. [13]
14 The LORD has poured into
them
a spirit of dizziness;
they make Egypt stagger
in all that she does,
as a drunkard staggers
around in his vomit.
15 There is nothing Egypt
can do--
head or tail, palm
branch or reed.
16 In that day the
Egyptians will be like women. They will shudder with fear at the uplifted hand
that the LORD Almighty raises against them. 17 And the land of Judah
will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be
terrified, because of what the LORD Almighty is planning against them.
18 In that day five cities
in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the LORD
Almighty. One of them will be called the City of Destruction. B
19 In that day there will
be an altar to the LORD in the heart of Egypt, and a monument to the LORD at
its border. 20 It will be a sign and witness to the LORD Almighty in
the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors,
he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them. 21 So
the LORD will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will
acknowledge the LORD. They will worship with sacrifices and grain offerings;
they will make vows to the LORD and keep them. 22 The LORD will
strike Egypt with a plague; he will strike them and heal them. They will turn
to the LORD, and he will respond to their pleas and heal them.
23 In that day there will be a highway from Egypt
to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The
Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together. 24 In that day Israel
will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing on the earth. 25
The LORD Almighty will bless them, saying, "Blessed
be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance."
20 1 In the year that the supreme commander, sent by
Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it—2 at
that time the LORD spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz. He said to him, "Take off the sackcloth from your body and the sandals from
your feet." And he did so, going around stripped and barefoot. [14]
3 Then the
LORD said, "Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for
three years, as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush, A 4 so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot
the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks
bared--to Egypt's shame. 5 Those who
trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be afraid and put to shame. 6 In that day the people who live on this coast will say,
`See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and
deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?'"
21 1 An oracle concerning the
Desert by the Sea:
Like whirlwinds sweeping
through the southland,
an invader comes from
the desert,
from a land of terror.
2 A dire vision has been
shown to me:
The traitor betrays, the
looter takes loot.
Elam, attack! Media, lay
siege!
I will bring to an end
all the groaning she caused.
3 At this my body is
racked with pain,
pangs seize me, like
those of a woman in labor;
I am staggered by what I
hear,
I am bewildered by what
I see.
4 My heart falters,
fear makes me tremble;
the twilight I longed for [15]
has become a horror to
me.
5 They set the tables,
they spread the rugs,
they eat, they drink!
Get up, you officers,
oil the shields!
6 This is what the Lord
says to me:
"Go, post a lookout
and have him
report what he sees.
7 When he sees
chariots
with teams of
horses,
riders on
donkeys
or riders on
camels,
let him be
alert,
fully alert."
8 And the lookout A
shouted,
"Day after day, my
lord, I stand on the watchtower;
every night I stay at my
post.
9 Look, here comes a man
in a chariot
with a team of horses.
And he gives back the
answer:
`Babylon has fallen, has
fallen!
All the images of its
gods
lie shattered on the
ground!'"
10 O my people, crushed on
the threshing floor,
I tell you what I have
heard
from the LORD Almighty,
from the God of Israel.
11 An oracle concerning
Dumah B:
Someone calls to me from
Seir,
"Watchman, what is
left of the night?
Watchman, what is left
of the night?"
12 The watchman replies,
"Morning is coming,
but also the night.
If you would ask, then
ask;
and come back yet
again."
13 An oracle concerning
Arabia:
You caravans of
Dedanites,
who camp in the thickets
of Arabia,
14 bring water for the thirsty;
you who live in Tema,
bring food for the
fugitives.
15 They flee from the
sword,
from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow
and from the heat of
battle.
16 This is what the Lord says to me: "Within one year, as a servant bound by contract would count
it, all the pomp of Kedar will come to an end. 17 The survivors of the bowmen, the warriors of Kedar, will be
few." The LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken. [16]
NEW TESTAMENT: GALATIANS 2:1 - 16
2 1 Fourteen years later I
went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2
I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I
preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be
leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain. 3 Yet
not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though
he was a Greek. 4 This matter arose because some false brothers had
infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make
us slaves. 5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the
truth of the gospel might remain with you.
6 As for those who seemed
to be important--whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not
judge by external appearance--those men added nothing to my message. 7 On
the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the
gospel to the Gentiles, A just as Peter had been to the Jews. B
8 For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to
the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles. 9
James, Peter C and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me
and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given
to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. 10
All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very
thing I was eager to do.
11 When Peter came to
Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. 12
Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But
when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles
because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The
other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even
Barnabas was led astray.
14 When I saw that they
were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front
of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a
Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?
15 "We who are Jews by birth and not `Gentile
sinners' 16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law,
but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus
that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law,
because by observing the law no one will be justified. [17]
