OLD TESTAMENT: SONG OF SONGS 1:1 - 4:16
NEW TESTAMENT: 2 CORINTHIANS 8:16 - 24
PSALMS: 17
A
prayer of David.
1
Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea;
listen
to my cry.
Give
ear to my prayer--
it
does not rise from deceitful lips.
2
May my vindication come from you;
may
your eyes see what is right.
3
Though you probe my heart and examine me at night,
though
you test me, you will find nothing;
I
have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
4
As for the deeds of men--
by
the word of your lips
I
have kept myself
from
the ways of the violent.
5
My steps have held to your paths;
my
feet have not slipped.
6
I call on you, O God, for you will answer me;
give
ear to me and hear my prayer.
7
Show the wonder of your great love,
you
who save by your right hand
those
who take refuge in you from their foes.
8
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide
me in the shadow of your wings
9
from the wicked who assail me,
from my mortal enemies who surround me. [1]
10
They close up their callous hearts,
and
their mouths speak with arrogance.
11
They have tracked me down, they now surround me,
with
eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
12
They are like a lion hungry for prey,
like
a great lion crouching in cover.
13
Rise up, O LORD, confront them, bring them down;
rescue
me from the wicked by your sword.
14
O LORD, by your hand save me from such men,
from
men of this world whose reward is in this life.
You
still the hunger of those you cherish;
their
sons have plenty,
and
they store up wealth for their children.
15
And I--in righteousness I will see your face;
when
I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing
your
likeness. [2]
PSALMS: 47
For
the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1
Clap your hands, all you nations;
shout
to God with cries of joy.
2
How awesome is the LORD Most High,
the
great King over all the earth!
3
He subdued nations under us,
peoples
under our feet.
4
He chose our inheritance for us,
the
pride of Jacob, whom he loved.
Selah
5
God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the
LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
6
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing
praises to our King, sing praises.
7
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing
to him a psalm A of praise.
8
God reigns over the nations;
God
is seated on his holy throne.
9
The nobles of the nations assemble
as
the people of the God of Abraham,
for
the kings B of the earth belong to God;
he
is greatly exalted. [3]
PSALMS: 77
For
the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm.
1
I cried out to God for help;
I
cried out to God to hear me.
2
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;
at
night I stretched out untiring hands
and
my soul refused to be comforted.
3
I remembered you, O God, and I groaned;
I
mused, and my spirit grew faint.
Selah
4
You kept my eyes from closing;
I
was too troubled to speak.
5
I thought about the former days,
the
years of long ago;
6
I remembered my songs in the night.
My
heart mused and my spirit inquired:
7
"Will the Lord reject forever?
Will
he never show his favor again?
8
Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has
his promise failed for all time?
9
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has
he in anger withheld his compassion?"
Selah
[4]
10
Then I thought, "To this I will appeal:
the
years of the right hand of the Most High."
11
I will remember the deeds of the LORD;
yes,
I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12
I will meditate on all your works
and
consider all your mighty deeds.
13
Your ways, O God, are holy.
What
god is so great as our God?
14
You are the God who performs miracles;
you
display your power among the peoples.
15
With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
the
descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
Selah
16
The waters saw you, O God,
the
waters saw you and writhed;
the
very depths were convulsed.
17
The clouds poured down water,
the
skies resounded with thunder;
your
arrows flashed back and forth.
18
Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,
your
lightning lit up the world;
the
earth trembled and quaked.
19
Your path led through the sea,
your
way through the mighty waters,
though
your footprints were not seen.
20
You led your people like a flock
by
the hand of Moses and Aaron. [5]
PSALMS:
107
1
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his
love endures forever.
2
Let the redeemed of the LORD say this--
those
he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3
those he gathered from the lands,
from
east and west, from north and south. A
4
Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding
no way to a city where they could settle.
5
They were hungry and thirsty,
and
their lives ebbed away.
6
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he delivered them from their distress.
7
He led them by a straight way
to
a city where they could settle.
8
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing
love
and
his wonderful deeds for men,
9
for he satisfies the thirsty
and
fills the hungry with good things.
10
Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom,
prisoners
suffering in iron chains,
11
for they had rebelled against the words of God
and
despised the counsel of the Most High.
12
So he subjected them to bitter labor;
they
stumbled, and there was no one to help.
13
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he saved them from their distress.
14
He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom
and
broke away their chains.
15
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing
love
and
his wonderful deeds for men,
16
for he breaks down gates of bronze
and
cuts through bars of iron. [6]
17
Some became fools through their rebellious ways
and
suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
18
They loathed all food
and
drew near the gates of death.
19
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he saved them from their distress.
20
He sent forth his word and healed them;
he
rescued them from the grave.
21
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing
love
and
his wonderful deeds for men.
22
Let them sacrifice thank offerings
and
tell of his works with songs of joy.
23
Others went out on the sea in ships;
they
were merchants on the mighty waters.
24
They saw the works of the LORD,
his
wonderful deeds in the deep.
25
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that
lifted high the waves.
26
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the
depths;
in
their peril their courage melted away.
27
They reeled and staggered like drunken men;
they
were at their wits' end.
28
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and
he brought them out of their distress.
29
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the
waves of the sea were hushed.
30
They were glad when it grew calm,
and
he guided them to their desired haven.
31
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing
love
and
his wonderful deeds for men.
32
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people [7]
and
praise him in the council of the elders.
33
He turned rivers into a desert,
flowing
springs into thirsty ground,
34
and fruitful land into a salt waste,
because
of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35
He turned the desert into pools of water
and
the parched ground into flowing springs;
36
there he brought the hungry to live,
and
they founded a city where they could settle.
37
They sowed fields and planted vineyards
that
yielded a fruitful harvest;
38
he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,
and
he did not let their herds diminish.
39
Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled
by
oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40
he who pours contempt on nobles
made
them wander in a trackless waste.
41
But he lifted the needy out of their affliction
and
increased their families like flocks.
42
The upright see and rejoice,
but
all the wicked shut their mouths.
43
Whoever is wise, let him heed these things
and
consider the great love of the LORD. [8]
PSALMS: 137
1
By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when
we remembered Zion.
2
There on the poplars
we
hung our harps,
3
for there our captors asked us for songs,
our
tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they
said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
4
How can we sing the songs of the LORD
while
in a foreign land?
5
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may
my right hand forget its skill.
6
May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if
I do not remember you,
if
I do not consider Jerusalem
my
highest joy.
7
Remember, O LORD, what the Edomites did
on
the day Jerusalem fell.
"Tear
it down," they cried,
"tear
it down to its foundations!"
8
O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy
is he who repays you
for
what you have done to us--
9
he who seizes your infants
and
dashes them against the rocks. [9]
PROVERBS: 17
17
1 Better a dry crust with
peace and quiet
than
a house full of feasting, A with strife.
2
A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son,
and
will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.
3
The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but
the LORD tests the heart.
4
A wicked man listens to evil lips;
a
liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.
5
He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;
whoever
gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
6
Children's children are a crown to the aged,
and
parents are the pride of their children.
7
Arrogant B lips are unsuited to a fool--
how
much worse lying lips to a ruler!
8
A bribe is a charm to the one who gives it;
wherever
he turns, he succeeds.
9
He who covers over an offense promotes love,
but
whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
10
A rebuke impresses a man of discernment
more
than a hundred lashes a fool.
11
An evil man is bent only on rebellion;
a
merciless official will be sent against him. [10]
12
Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs
than
a fool in his folly.
13
If a man pays back evil for good,
evil
will never leave his house.
14
Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so
drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
15
Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent--
the
LORD detests them both.
16
Of what use is money in the hand of a fool,
since
he has no desire to get wisdom?
17
A friend loves at all times,
and
a brother is born for adversity.
18
A man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge
and
puts up security for his neighbor.
19
He who loves a quarrel loves sin;
he
who builds a high gate invites destruction.
20
A man of perverse heart does not prosper;
he
whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.
21
To have a fool for a son brings grief;
there
is no joy for the father of a fool. [11]
22
A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but
a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
23
A wicked man accepts a bribe in secret
to
pervert the course of justice.
24
A discerning man keeps wisdom in view,
but
a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
25
A foolish son brings grief to his father
and
bitterness to the one who bore him.
26
It is not good to punish an innocent man,
or
to flog officials for their integrity.
27
A man of knowledge uses words with restraint,
and
a man of understanding is even-tempered.
28
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,
and
discerning if he holds his tongue. [12]
OLD TESTAMENT: SONG OF SONGS 1:1 - 4:16
1 1
Solomon's Song of Songs.
2 Let
him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth--
for your love is more
delightful than wine.
3 Pleasing
is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like
perfume poured out.
No wonder the maidens
love you!
4 Take
me away with you--let us hurry!
Let the king bring me
into his chambers.
We rejoice and delight
in you A;
we will praise your love
more than wine.
How right they are to
adore you!
5 Dark
am I, yet lovely,
O daughters of
Jerusalem,
dark like the tents of
Kedar,
like the tent curtains
of Solomon. B
6 Do
not stare at me because I am dark,
because I am darkened by
the sun.
My mother's sons were
angry with me
and made me take care of
the vineyards;
my own vineyard I have
neglected.
7 Tell
me, you whom I love, where you graze your flock
and where you rest your
sheep at midday. [13]
Why should I be like a
veiled woman
beside the flocks of
your friends?
8 If
you do not know, most beautiful of women,
follow the tracks of the
sheep
and graze your young
goats
by the tents of the
shepherds.
9 I
liken you, my darling, to a mare
harnessed to one of the
chariots of Pharaoh.
10 Your
cheeks are beautiful with earrings,
your neck with strings
of jewels.
11 We
will make you earrings of gold,
studded with silver.
12 While
the king was at his table,
my perfume spread its
fragrance.
13 My
lover is to me a sachet of myrrh
resting between my
breasts.
14 My
lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms
from the vineyards of En
Gedi.
15 How
beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes are doves.
16 Oh,
how charming!
And our bed is verdant.
17 The
beams of our house are cedars;
our rafters are firs.
2 1
I am a rose A of Sharon,
a lily of the valleys.
2 Like
a lily among thorns
is my darling among the
maidens.
3 Like
an apple tree among the trees of the forest
is my lover among the
young men.
I delight to sit in his
shade,
and his fruit is sweet
to my taste.
4 He
has taken me to the banquet hall,
and his banner over me
is love.
5 Strengthen
me with raisins,
refresh me with apples,
for I am faint with
love.
6 His
left arm is under my head, [14]
How handsome you are, my
lover! [15]
and his right arm
embraces me.
7 Daughters
of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by
the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken
love
until it so desires.
8 Listen!
My lover!
Look! Here he comes,
leaping across the
mountains,
bounding over the hills.
9 My
lover is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Look! There he stands
behind our wall,
gazing through the
windows,
peering through the
lattice.
10 My
lover spoke and said to me,
"Arise, my darling,
my beautiful one, and
come with me.
11 See!
The winter is past;
the rains are over and
gone.
12 Flowers
appear on the earth;
the season of singing
has come,
the cooing of doves
is heard in our land.
13 The
fig tree forms its early fruit;
the blossoming vines
spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling;
[16]
my beautiful one, come
with me."
14 My
dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the hiding places on
the mountainside,
show me your face,
let me hear your voice;
for your voice is sweet,
and your face is lovely.
15 Catch
for us the foxes,
the little foxes
that ruin the vineyards,
our vineyards that are
in bloom.
16 My
lover is mine and I am his;
he browses among the
lilies.
17 Until
the day breaks
and the shadows flee,
turn, my lover,
and be like a gazelle
or like a young stag
on the rugged hills. B
3 1
All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my
heart loves; [17]
I looked for him but did
not find him.
2 I
will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and
squares;
I will search for the
one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but
did not find him.
3 The
watchmen found me
as they made their
rounds in the city.
"Have you seen the
one my heart loves?"
4 Scarcely
had I passed them
when I found the one my
heart loves.
I held him and would not
let him go
till I had brought him
to my mother's house,
to the room of the one
who conceived me.
5 Daughters
of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by
the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken
love
until it so desires.
6 Who
is this coming up from the desert
like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and
incense
made from all the spices
of the merchant?
7 Look!
It is Solomon's carriage,
escorted by sixty
warriors, [18]
the noblest of Israel,
8 all
of them wearing the sword,
all experienced in
battle,
each with his sword at
his side,
prepared for the terrors
of the night.
9 King
Solomon made for himself the carriage;
he made it of wood from
Lebanon.
10 Its
posts he made of silver,
its base of gold.
Its seat was upholstered
with purple,
its interior lovingly
inlaid
by A the
daughters of Jerusalem.
11 Come
out, you daughters of Zion,
and look at King Solomon
wearing the crown,
the crown with which his
mother crowned him
on the day of his
wedding,
the day his heart
rejoiced.
4 1
How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your
veil are doves.
Your hair is like a
flock of goats [19]
descending from Mount
Gilead.
2 Your
teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
coming up from the
washing.
Each has its twin;
not one of them is
alone.
3 Your
lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
your mouth is lovely.
Your temples behind your
veil
are like the halves of a
pomegranate.
4 Your
neck is like the tower of David,
built with elegance A;
on it hang a thousand
shields,
all of them shields of
warriors.
5 Your
two breasts are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a
gazelle
that browse among the
lilies.
6 Until
the day breaks
and the shadows flee,
I will go to the
mountain of myrrh
and to the hill of
incense.
7 All
beautiful you are, my darling;
there is no flaw in you.
8 Come
with me from Lebanon, my bride,
come with me from
Lebanon.
Descend from the crest
of Amana, [20]
from the top of Senir,
the summit of Hermon,
from the lions' dens
and the mountain haunts of
the leopards.
9 You
have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride;
you have stolen my heart
with one glance of your
eyes,
with one jewel of your
necklace.
10 How
delightful is your love, my sister, my bride!
How much more pleasing
is your love than wine,
and the fragrance of
your perfume than any spice!
11 Your
lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;
milk and honey are under
your tongue.
The fragrance of your
garments is like that of Lebanon.
12 You
are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride;
you are a spring
enclosed, a sealed fountain.
13 Your
plants are an orchard of pomegranates
with choice fruits,
with henna and nard,
14
nard and saffron,
calamus and cinnamon,
with every kind of
incense tree,
with myrrh and aloes
and all the finest
spices.
15 You
are B a garden fountain,
a well of flowing water
streaming down from
Lebanon. [21]
16 Awake,
north wind,
and come, south wind!
Blow on my garden,
that its fragrance may
spread abroad.
Let my lover come into
his garden
and taste its choice
fruits. [22]
NEW TESTAMENT: 2 CORINTHIANS 8:16 - 24
16 I
thank God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. 17
For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much
enthusiasm and on his own initiative. 18 And we are sending along
with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the
gospel. 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany
us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord
himself and to show our eagerness to help. 20 We want to avoid any
criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are
taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in
the eyes of men.
22 In
addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in
many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great
confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow
worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches
and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of
your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.
