PROVERBS: 22
OLD TESTAMENT: JEREMIAH 16:16 - 18:23
NEW TESTAMENT: 1 THESSALONIANS 4:1 - 5:3
PSALMS: 22
For
the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A
psalm of David.
1
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why
are you so far from saving me,
so
far from the words of my groaning?
2
O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by
night, and am not silent.
3
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you
are the praise of Israel. A
4
In you our fathers put their trust;
they
trusted and you delivered them.
5
They cried to you and were saved;
in
you they trusted and were not disappointed.
6
But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned
by men and despised by the people.
7
All who see me mock me;
they
hurl insults, shaking their heads:
8
"He trusts in the LORD;
let
the LORD rescue him.
Let
him deliver him,
since
he delights in him."
9
Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you
made me trust in you
even
at my mother's breast.
10
From birth I was cast upon you;
from
my mother's womb you have been my God. [1]
11
Do not be far from me,
for
trouble is near
and
there is no one to help.
12
Many bulls surround me;
strong
bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13
Roaring lions tearing their prey
open
their mouths wide against me.
14
I am poured out like water,
and
all my bones are out of joint.
My
heart has turned to wax;
it
has melted away within me.
15
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and
my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you
lay me B in the dust of death.
16
Dogs have surrounded me;
a
band of evil men has encircled me,
they
have pierced C my hands and my feet.
17
I can count all my bones;
people
stare and gloat over me.
18
They divide my garments among them
and
cast lots for my clothing.
19
But you, O LORD, be not far off;
O
my Strength, come quickly to help me.
20
Deliver my life from the sword,
my
precious life from the power of the dogs.
21
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
Save
D me from the horns of the wild oxen.
22
I will declare your name to my brothers;
in
the congregation I will praise you.
23
You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All
you descendants of Jacob, honor him! [2]
Revere
him, all you descendants of Israel!
24
For he has not despised or disdained
the
suffering of the afflicted one;
he
has not hidden his face from him
but
has listened to his cry for help.
25
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great
assembly;
before
those who fear youE will I fulfill my vows.
26
The poor will eat and be satisfied;
they
who seek the LORD will praise him--
may
your hearts live forever!
27
All the ends of the earth
will
remember and turn to the LORD,
and
all the families of the nations
will
bow down before him,
28
for dominion belongs to the LORD
and
he rules over the nations.
29
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all
who go down to the dust will kneel before him--
those
who cannot keep themselves alive.
30
Posterity will serve him;
future
generations will be told about the Lord.
31
They will proclaim his righteousness
to
a people yet unborn--
for
he has done it. [3]
PSALMS: 52
For
the director of music. A maskil A of David. When Doeg the
Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of
Ahimelech."
1
Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man?
Why
do you boast all day long,
you
who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
2
Your tongue plots destruction;
it
is like a sharpened razor,
you
who practice deceit.
3 You
love evil rather than good,
falsehood
rather than speaking the truth.
Selah
4
You love every harmful word,
O
you deceitful tongue!
5
Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He
will snatch you up and tear you from your tent;
he
will uproot you from the land of the living.
Selah
6
The righteous will see and fear;
they
will laugh at him, saying,
7
"Here now is the man
who
did not make God his stronghold
but
trusted in his great wealth
and
grew strong by destroying others!"
8
But I am like an olive tree
flourishing
in the house of God;
I
trust in God's unfailing love
for
ever and ever.
9
I will praise you forever for what you have done; [4]
in
your name I will hope, for your name is good.
I
will praise you in the presence of your saints. [5]
PSALMS: 82
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
God presides in the great assembly;
he
gives judgment among the "gods":
2
"How long will you A defend the unjust
and show partiality to the wicked?
Selah
3
Defend the cause of the weak and
fatherless;
maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4 Rescue the
weak and needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
5
"They know nothing,
they understand nothing.
They walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6
"I said, `You are
"gods";
you are all sons of the Most High.'
7 But you
will die like mere men;
you will fall like every other ruler."
8 Rise up, O
God, judge the earth,
for all the nations are your inheritance. [6]
PSALMS: 112
1
Praise A the LORD. B
Blessed
is the man who fears the LORD,
who
finds great delight in his commands.
2
His children will be mighty in the land;
the
generation of the upright will be blessed.
3
Wealth and riches are in his house,
and
his righteousness endures forever.
4
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for
the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. C
5Good
will come to him who is generous and lends freely,
who
conducts his affairs with justice.
6
Surely he will never be shaken;
a
righteous man will be remembered forever.
7
He will have no fear of bad news;
his
heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
8
His heart is secure, he will have no fear;
in
the end he will look in triumph on his foes.
9
He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor,
his
righteousness endures forever;
his
horn D will be lifted high in honor.
10
The wicked man will see and be vexed,
he
will gnash his teeth and waste away;
the
longings of the wicked will come to nothing. [7]
PSALMS: 142
A
maskil A of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.
1
I cry aloud to the LORD;
I
lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.
2
I pour out my complaint before him;
before
him I tell my trouble.
3
When my spirit grows faint within me,
it
is you who know my way.
In
the path where I walk
men
have hidden a snare for me.
4
Look to my right and see;
no
one is concerned for me.
I
have no refuge;
no
one cares for my life.
5
I cry to you, O LORD;
I
say, "You are my refuge,
my
portion in the land of the living."
6
Listen to my cry,
for
I am in desperate need;
rescue
me from those who pursue me,
for
they are too strong for me.
7
Set me free from my prison,
that
I may praise your name.
Then
the righteous will gather about me
because
of your goodness to me. [8]
PROVERBS: 22
22
1 A good name is more
desirable than great riches;
to
be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
2
Rich and poor have this in common:
The
LORD is the Maker of them all.
3
A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge,
but
the simple keep going and suffer for it.
4
Humility and the fear of the LORD
bring
wealth and honor and life.
5
In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares,
but
he who guards his soul stays far from them.
6
Train A a child in the way he should go,
and
when he is old he will not turn from it.
7
The rich rule over the poor,
and
the borrower is servant to the lender.
8
He who sows wickedness reaps trouble,
and
the rod of his fury will be destroyed.
9
A generous man will himself be blessed,
for
he shares his food with the poor.
10
Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife;
quarrels
and insults are ended.
11
He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious
will
have the king for his friend. [9]
12
The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge,
but
he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.
13
The sluggard says, "There is a lion
outside!"
or,
"I will be murdered in the streets!"
14
The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit;
he
who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.
15
Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
but
the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
16
He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth
and
he who gives gifts to the rich--both come to poverty.
17
Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise;
apply
your heart to what I teach,
18
for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
and
have all of them ready on your lips.
19
So that your trust may be in the LORD,
I
teach you today, even you.
20
Have I not written thirty B sayings for
you,
sayings
of counsel and knowledge,
21
teaching you true and reliable words,
so
that you can give sound answers
to
him who sent you?
22
Do not exploit the poor because they are poor
and
do not crush the needy in court,
23
for the LORD will take up their case
and
will plunder those who plunder them. [10]
24
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man,
do
not associate with one easily angered,
25
or you may learn his ways
and
get yourself ensnared.
26
Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge
or
puts up security for debts;
27
if you lack the means to pay,
your
very bed will be snatched from under you.
28
Do not move an ancient boundary stone
set
up by your forefathers.
29
Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He
will serve before kings;
he
will not serve before obscure men. [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: JEREMIAH 16:16 - 18:23
16 "But now I will send for many fishermen,"
declares the LORD, "and they will catch them.
After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every
mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks. 17 My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me,
nor is their sin concealed from my eyes. 18 I will repay them double for their wickedness and their
sin, because they have defiled my land with the lifeless forms of their vile
images and have filled my inheritance with their detestable idols."
19 O
LORD, my strength and my fortress,
my refuge in time of
distress,
to you the nations will
come
from the ends of the
earth and say,
"Our fathers
possessed nothing but false gods,
worthless idols that did
them no good.
20 Do
men make their own gods?
Yes, but they are not
gods!"
21 "Therefore
I will teach them--
this time I will teach
them
my power and might.
Then they will know
that my name is the
LORD.
17 1
"Judah's sin is engraved with an iron tool,
inscribed with a flint
point,
on the tablets of their
hearts
and on the horns of
their altars.
2 Even
their children remember [12]
their altars and Asherah
poles A
beside the spreading
trees
and on the high hills.
3 My
mountain in the land
and your B
wealth and all your treasures
I will give away as
plunder,
together with your high
places,
because of sin
throughout your country.
4 Through
your own fault you will lose
the inheritance I gave
you.
I will enslave you to
your enemies
in a land you do not
know,
for you have kindled my
anger,
and it will burn
forever."
5 This
is what the LORD says:
"Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who depends
on flesh for his strength
and whose
heart turns away from the LORD.
6 He will be like a bush in the wastelands;
he will not
see prosperity when it comes.
He will dwell
in the parched places of the desert,
in a salt
land where no one lives. [13]
7
"But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose
confidence is in him.
8 He will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends
out its roots by the stream.
It does not
fear when heat comes;
its leaves are
always green.
It has no
worries in a year of drought
and never
fails to bear fruit."
9 The
heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?
10 "I the LORD search the heart
and examine
the mind,
to reward a
man according to his conduct,
according to
what his deeds deserve."
11 Like
a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay
is the man who gains
riches by unjust means.
When his life is half
gone, they will desert him,
and in the end he will
prove to be a fool.
12 A
glorious throne, exalted from the beginning,
is the place of our
sanctuary.
13 O
LORD, the hope of Israel, [14]
all who forsake you will
be put to shame.
Those who turn away from
you will be written in the dust
because they have
forsaken the LORD,
the spring of living
water.
14 Heal
me, O LORD, and I will be healed;
save me and I will be
saved,
for you are the one I
praise.
15 They
keep saying to me,
"Where is the word
of the LORD?
Let it now be
fulfilled!"
16 I
have not run away from being your shepherd;
you know I have not
desired the day of despair.
What passes my lips is
open before you.
17 Do
not be a terror to me;
you are my refuge in the
day of disaster.
18 Let
my persecutors be put to shame,
but keep me from shame;
let them be terrified,
but keep me from terror.
Bring on them the day of
disaster;
destroy them with double
destruction.
19 This
is what the LORD said to me: "Go and stand at the
gate of the people, through which the kings of Judah go in and out; stand also
at all the other gates of Jerusalem.
20 Say to them, `Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and all
people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem who come through these gates. 21 This is what the LORD says: Be careful not to carry a load on the
Sabbath day or bring it through the [15] gates of Jerusalem. 22 Do not bring a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath,
but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers. 23 Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and
would not listen or respond to discipline. 24 But if you are careful to obey me, declares the LORD, and bring no
load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day
holy by not doing any work on it, 25 then kings who sit on David's throne will come through the gates of
this city with their officials. They and their officials will come riding in
chariots and on horses, accompanied by the men of Judah and those living in
Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever. 26 People will come from the towns of Judah and the villages around
Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin and the western foothills, from the
hill country and the Negev, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain
offerings, incense and thank offerings to the house of the LORD. 27 But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying
any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I
will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume
her fortresses.'"
18 1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2
"Go down to the potter's house, and there I
will give you my message." 3 So I went down to the
potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he
was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into
another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then
the word of the LORD came to me: 6 "O house
of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the
LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so
are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be
uprooted, torn down and destroyed, 8
and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not
inflict on it the disaster I had planned. 9 And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom
is to be built up and planted, 10 and
if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the
good I had intended to do for it.
11 "Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in
Jerusalem, `This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you
and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you,
and reform your ways and your actions.' 12 But they will reply, `It's no use. We will continue with our own
plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.'"
[16]
13 Therefore
this is what the LORD says:
"Inquire among the nations:
Who has ever
heard anything like this?
A most
horrible thing has been done
by Virgin
Israel.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon
ever vanish
from its rocky slopes?
Do its cool
waters from distant sources
ever cease to
flow? A
15 Yet my people have forgotten me;
they burn incense
to worthless idols,
which made
them stumble in their ways
and in the
ancient paths.
They made
them walk in bypaths
and on roads
not built up.
16 Their land will be laid waste,
an object of
lasting scorn;
all who pass
by will be appalled
and will
shake their heads.
17 Like a wind from the east,
I will
scatter them before their enemies;
I will show
them my back and not my face
in the day of
their disaster."
18 They
said, "Come, let's make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the
law by the priest will not be lost, nor will counsel from the [17]
wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let's attack him with our
tongues and pay no attention to anything he says."
19 Listen
to me, O LORD;
hear what my accusers
are saying!
20 Should
good be repaid with evil?
Yet they have dug a pit
for me.
Remember that I stood
before you
and spoke in their
behalf
to turn your wrath away
from them.
21 So
give their children over to famine;
hand them over to the
power of the sword.
Let their wives be made
childless and widows;
let their men be put to
death,
their young men slain by
the sword in battle.
22 Let
a cry be heard from their houses
when you suddenly bring
invaders against them,
for they have dug a pit
to capture me
and have hidden snares
for my feet.
23 But
you know, O LORD,
all their plots to kill
me.
Do not forgive their
crimes
or blot out their sins
from your sight.
Let them be overthrown
before you;
deal with them in the
time of your anger. [18]
NEW TESTAMENT: 1 THESSALONIANS 4:1 - 5:3
4 1
Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in
order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in
the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
2 For
you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3 It
is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual
immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control his own body A
in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like
the heathen, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one
should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for
all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7 For God
did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore,
he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his
Holy Spirit.
9 Now
about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have
been taught by God to love each other. 10 And in fact, you do love
all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more
and more.
11 Make
it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work
with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may
win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
13 Brothers,
we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve
like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus
died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who
have fallen asleep in him.
15 According
to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left
till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen
asleep.
16 For
the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the
voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ
will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left
will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each
other with these words.
5 1
Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to
write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will
come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying,
"Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor
pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. [19]
