NEW TESTAMENT: ACTS 18:23 - 19:12
PSALMS: 8
For
the director of music. According to gittith. A A psalm of
David.
1
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth!
You
have set your glory
above
the heavens.
2
From the lips of children and infants
you
have ordained praise B
because
of your enemies,
to
silence the foe and the avenger.
3
When I consider your heavens,
the
work of your fingers,
the
moon and the stars,
which
you have set in place,
4
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the
son of man that you care for him?
5
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings C
and
crowned him with glory and honor.
6
You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you
put everything under his feet:
7
all flocks and herds,
and
the beasts of the field,
8
the birds of the air,
and
the fish of the sea,
all
that swim the paths of the seas. [1]
9
O LORD, our Lord,
how
majestic is your name in all the earth! [2]
PSALMS: 38
A
psalm of David. A petition.
1
O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or
discipline me in your wrath.
2
For your arrows have pierced me,
and
your hand has come down upon me.
3
Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
my
bones have no soundness because of my sin.
4
My guilt has overwhelmed me
like
a burden too heavy to bear.
5
My wounds fester and are loathsome
because
of my sinful folly.
6
I am bowed down and brought very low;
all
day long I go about mourning.
7
My back is filled with searing pain;
there
is no health in my body.
8
I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I
groan in anguish of heart.
9
All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;
my
sighing is not hidden from you.
10
My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even
the light has gone from my eyes.
11
My friends and companions avoid me because of my
wounds;
my
neighbors stay far away.
12
Those who seek my life set their traps,
those
who would harm me talk of my ruin;
all
day long they plot deception. [3]
13
I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear,
like
a mute, who cannot open his mouth;
14
I have become like a man who does not hear,
whose
mouth can offer no reply.
15
I wait for you, O LORD;
you
will answer, O Lord my God.
16
For I said, "Do not let them gloat
or
exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."
17
For I am about to fall,
and
my pain is ever with me.
18
I confess my iniquity;
I
am troubled by my sin.
19
Many are those who are my vigorous enemies;
those
who hate me without reason are numerous.
20
Those who repay my good with evil
slander
me when I pursue what is good.
21
O LORD, do not forsake me;
be
not far from me, O my God.
22
Come quickly to help me,
O
Lord my Savior. [4]
PSALMS: 68
For
the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song.
1
May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
may
his foes flee before him.
2
As smoke is blown away by the wind,
may
you blow them away;
as
wax melts before the fire,
may
the wicked perish before God.
3
But may the righteous be glad
and
rejoice before God;
may
they be happy and joyful.
4
Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol
him who rides on the clouds A--
his
name is the LORD--
and
rejoice before him.
5
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is
God in his holy dwelling.
6
God sets the lonely in families, B
he
leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but
the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
7
When you went out before your people, O God,
when
you marched through the wasteland,
Selah
8
the earth shook,
the
heavens poured down rain,
before
God, the One of Sinai,
before
God, the God of Israel.
9
You gave abundant showers, O God;
you
refreshed your weary inheritance. [5]
10
Your people settled in it,
and
from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor.
11
The Lord announced the word,
and
great was the company of those who proclaimed it:
12
"Kings and armies
flee in haste;
in the camps men divide the plunder.
Even
while you sleep among the campfires, C
the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,
its feathers with shining gold."
14
When the Almighty D scattered the kings in
the land,
it
was like snow fallen on Zalmon.
15
The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains;
rugged
are the mountains of Bashan.
16
Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains,
at
the mountain where God chooses to reign,
where
the LORD himself will dwell forever?
17
The chariots of God are tens of thousands
and
thousands of thousands;
the
Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
18
When you ascended on high,
you
led captives in your train;
you
received gifts from men,
even
from E the rebellious--
that
you, F O LORD God, might dwell there.
19
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
who
daily bears our burdens.
Selah
20
Our God is a God who saves;
from
the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death. [6]
21
Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies,
the
hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
22
The Lord says, "I
will bring them from Bashan;
I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
23 that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes,
while the tongues of your dogs have their share."
24
Your procession has come into view, O God,
the
procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
25
In front are the singers, after them the musicians;
with
them are the maidens playing tambourines.
26
Praise God in the great congregation;
praise
the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
27
There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them,
there
the great throng of Judah's princes,
and
there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.
28
Summon your power, O God G;
show
us your strength, O God, as you have done before.
29
Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings
will bring you gifts.
30
Rebuke the beast among the reeds,
the
herd of bulls among the calves of the nations.
Humbled,
may it bring bars of silver.
Scatter
the nations who delight in war.
31
Envoys will come from Egypt;
CushH
will submit herself to God.
32
Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,
sing
praise to the Lord,
Selah
[7]
33
to him who rides the ancient skies above,
who
thunders with mighty voice.
34
Proclaim the power of God,
whose
majesty is over Israel,
whose
power is in the skies.
35
You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;
the
God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.
Praise
be to God! [8]
PSALMS: 98
A
psalm.
1
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for
he has done marvelous things;
his
right hand and his holy arm
have
worked salvation for him.
2
The LORD has made his salvation known
and
revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3
He has remembered his love
and
his faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all
the ends of the earth have seen
the
salvation of our God.
4
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst
into jubilant song with music;
5make
music to the LORD with the harp,
with
the harp and the sound of singing,
6
with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn--
shout
for joy before the LORD, the King.
7
Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the
world, and all who live in it.
8
Let the rivers clap their hands,
let
the mountains sing together for joy;
9
let them sing before the LORD,
for
he comes to judge the earth.
He
will judge the world in righteousness
and
the peoples with equity. [9]
PSALMS: 128
A
song of ascents.
1
Blessed are all who fear the LORD,
who
walk in his ways.
2
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings
and prosperity will be yours.
3
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within
your house;
your
sons will be like olive shoots
around
your table.
4
Thus is the man blessed
who
fears the LORD.
5
May the LORD bless you from Zion
all
the days of your life;
may
you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,
6
and may you live to see your children's children.
Peace
be upon Israel. [10]
PROVERBS: 8
8
1 Does not wisdom call
out?
Does
not understanding raise her voice?
2
On the heights along the way,
where
the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3
beside the gates leading into the city,
at
the entrances, she cries aloud:
4
"To you, O men, I
call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
5 You who
are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish, gain understanding.
6
Listen, for I have worthy things to say;
I open my lips to speak what is right.
7 My mouth
speaks what is true,
for my lips detest wickedness.
8 All the
words of my mouth are just;
none of them is crooked or perverse.
9 To the
discerning all of them are right;
they are faultless to those who have knowledge.
10 Choose my
instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom
is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
12
"I, wisdom, dwell
together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.
13 To fear
the LORD is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
14 Counsel
and sound judgment are mine;
I have understanding and power.
15 By me
kings reign
and rulers make laws that are just;
and all nobles who rule on earth. A
17 I love
those who love me,
and those who seek me find me.
18 With me
are riches and honor,
enduring wealth and prosperity.
19
My fruit is better than fine gold;
what I yield surpasses choice silver.
20 I walk in
the way of righteousness,
along the paths of justice,
21 bestowing
wealth on those who love me
and making their treasuries full.
22
"The LORD brought me
forth as the first of his works, BC
before his deeds of old;
23 I was
appointedD from
eternity,
from the beginning, before the world began.
24 When there
were no oceans, I was given birth,
when there were no springs abounding with water;
25 before the
mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he
made the earth or its fields
or any of the dust of the world.
27 I was
there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he
established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he
gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was the craftsman at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind. [12]
32
"Now then, my sons,
listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Listen to
my instruction and be wise;
do not ignore it.
34 Blessed is
the man who listens to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For
whoever finds me finds life
and receives favor from the LORD.
36 But
whoever fails to find me harms himself;
all who hate me love death." [13]
OLD TESTAMENT: 2 KINGS 13:1 - 14:29
13 1
In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king
of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned
seventeen years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD by following
the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he
did not turn away from them. 3 So the LORD's anger burned against
Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram
and Ben-Hadad his son.
4 Then
Jehoahaz sought the LORD's favor, and the LORD listened to him, for he saw how
severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 The LORD provided
a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the
Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they
did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused
Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole A
remained standing in Samaria.
7 Nothing
had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and
ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and
made them like the dust at threshing time.
8 As
for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements,
are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9 Jehoahaz
rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash B his
son succeeded him as king.
10 In
the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became
king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned [14]
sixteen years. 11 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not
turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused
Israel to commit; he continued in them.
12 As
for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, all he did and his achievements,
including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the
book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 13 Jehoash rested with
his fathers, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in
Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14 Now
Elisha was suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of
Israel went down to see him and wept over him. "My father! My
father!" he cried. "The chariots and horsemen of Israel!"
15 Elisha
said, "Get a bow and some arrows," and he did so. 16"Take
the bow in your hands," he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken
it, Elisha put his hands on the king's hands.
17 "Open
the east window," he said, and he opened it. "Shoot!" Elisha
said, and he shot. "The LORD's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over
Aram!" Elisha declared. "You will completely destroy the Arameans at
Aphek."
18 Then
he said, "Take the arrows," and the king took them. Elisha told him,
"Strike the ground." He struck it three times and stopped.
19 The
man of God was angry with him and said, "You
should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated
Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times."
[15]
20 Elisha
died and was buried.
Now Moabite raiders used
to enter the country every spring. 21 Once while some Israelites
were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the
man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man
came to life and stood up on his feet.
22 Hazael
king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But
the LORD was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them
because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been
unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.
24 Hazael
king of Aram died, and Ben-Hadad his son succeeded him as king. 25 Then
Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he
had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Jehoash defeated him,
and so he recovered the Israelite towns.
14 1
In the second year of Jehoash A son of
Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2
He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in
Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoaddin; she was from
Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not
as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his
father Joash. 4 The high places, however, were not removed; the
people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. [16]
5 After
the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed the officials who had murdered
his father the king. 6 Yet he did not put the sons of the assassins
to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses
where the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not
be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their
fathers; each is to die for his own sins." B
7 He
was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and
captured Sela in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.
8 Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of
Israel, with the challenge: "Come, meet me face to face."
9 But
Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: "A thistle in
Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, `Give your daughter to my son in
marriage.' Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle
underfoot. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are
arrogant. Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and
cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?"
11 Amaziah,
however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah
king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 12 Judah
was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home.
13 Jehoash
king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of
Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the
wall of Jerusalem [17]
from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate--a section about six hundred feet
long. C
14 He
took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the
LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and
returned to Samaria.
15 As for the other events
of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war
against
Amaziah king of Judah,
are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16 Jehoash
rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And
Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.
17 Amaziah
son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash
son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18 As for the other events of
Amaziah's reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of
Judah?
19 They
conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men
after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 He was brought back by
horse and was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers, in the City of David.
21 Then
all the people of Judah took Azariah,D who was sixteen years old,
and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22 He was the one
who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his
fathers. [18]
23 In
the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of
Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not turn away from any of the
sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25 He
was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo E Hamath
to the Sea of the Arabah, F in accordance with the word of the LORD,
the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet
from Gath Hepher.
26 The
LORD had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was
suffering; there was no one to help them. 27 And since the LORD had
not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them
by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
28 As
for the other events of Jeroboam's reign, all he did, and his military
achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus and Hamath,
which had belonged to Yaudi, G are they not written in the book of
the annals of the kings of Israel?
29 Jeroboam
rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded
him as king. [19]
NEW TESTAMENT: ACTS 18:23 - 19:12
23 After
spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place
to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the
disciples.
24 Meanwhile
a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned
man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been
instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor B
and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila
heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God
more adequately.
27 When
Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the
disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who
by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in
public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
19 1
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road
through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2
and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit whenA
you believed?"
They answered, "No,
we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3 So
Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?"
"John's
baptism," they replied.
4 Paul
said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to
believe in the one coming after him, that is, in [20]
Jesus."
5 On
hearing this, they were baptized intoB the name of the Lord Jesus. 6
When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and
they spoke in tongues C and prophesied. 7 There were
about twelve men in all.
8 Paul
entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing
persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9 But some of them became
obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left
them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture
hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years, so that all the
Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.
11 God
did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even
handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their
illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. [21]
