PROVERBS: 11
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 60:1 - 62:5
NEW TESTAMENT: PHILIPPINS 1:27 - 2:18
PSALMS: 11
For
the director of music. Of David.
1
In the LORD I take refuge.
How
then can you say to me:
"Flee like a bird to your mountain.
2 For look,
the wicked bend their bows;
they set their arrows against the strings
to shoot from the shadows
at the upright in heart.
3 When the
foundations are being destroyed,
what can the righteous do A?"
4
The LORD is in his holy temple;
the
LORD is on his heavenly throne.
He
observes the sons of men;
his
eyes examine them.
5
The LORD examines the righteous,
but
the wicked B and those who love violence
his
soul hates.
6
On the wicked he will rain
fiery
coals and burning sulfur;
a
scorching wind will be their lot.
7
For the LORD is righteous,
he
loves justice;
upright
men will see his face. [1]
PSALMS: 41
For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
Blessed is he who has regard for the weak;
the
LORD delivers him in times of trouble.
2
The LORD will protect him and preserve his life;
he
will bless him in the land
and
not surrender him to the desire of his foes.
3
The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed
and
restore him from his bed of illness.
4
I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me;
heal
me, for I have sinned against you."
5
My enemies say of me in malice,
"When
will he die and his name perish?"
6
Whenever one comes to see me,
he
speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then
he goes out and spreads it abroad.
7
All my enemies whisper together against me;
they
imagine the worst for me, saying,
8
"A vile disease has beset him;
he
will never get up from the place where he lies."
9
Even my close friend, whom I trusted,
he
who shared my bread,
has
lifted up his heel against me. [2]
10
But you, O LORD, have mercy on me;
raise
me up, that I may repay them.
11
I know that you are pleased with me,
for
my enemy does not triumph over me.
12
In my integrity you uphold me
and
set me in your presence forever.
13
Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,
from
everlasting to everlasting.
Amen
and Amen [3]
PSALMS: 71
1
In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
let
me never be put to shame.
2
Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness;
turn
your ear to me and save me.
3
Be my rock of refuge,
to
which I can always go;
give
the command to save me,
for
you are my rock and my fortress.
4
Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from
the grasp of evil and cruel men.
5
For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD,
my
confidence since my youth.
6
From birth I have relied on you;
you
brought me forth from my mother's womb.
I
will ever praise you.
7
I have become like a portent to many,
but
you are my strong refuge.
8
My mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring
your splendor all day long.
9
Do not cast me away when I am old;
do
not forsake me when my strength is gone.
10
For my enemies speak against me;
those
who wait to kill me conspire together.
11
They say, "God has forsaken him;
pursue
him and seize him,
for
no one will rescue him."
12
Be not far from me, O God;
come
quickly, O my God, to help me.
13
May my accusers perish in shame;
may
those who want to harm me
be
covered with scorn and disgrace. [4]
14
But as for me, I will always have hope;
I
will praise you more and more.
15
My mouth will tell of your righteousness,
of
your salvation all day long,
though
I know not its measure.
16
I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign
LORD;
I
will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.
17
Since my youth, O God, you have taught me,
and
to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
18
Even when I am old and gray,
do
not forsake me, O God,
till
I declare your power to the next generation,
your
might to all who are to come.
19
Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God,
you
who have done great things.
Who,
O God, is like you?
20
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you
will restore my life again;
from
the depths of the earth
you
will again bring me up.
21
You will increase my honor
and
comfort me once again.
22
I will praise you with the harp
for
your faithfulness, O my God;
I
will sing praise to you with the lyre,
O
Holy One of Israel.
23
My lips will shout for joy
when
I sing praise to you--
I,
whom you have redeemed.
24
My tongue will tell of your righteous acts [5]
all
day long,
for
those who wanted to harm me
have
been put to shame and confusion. [6]
PSALMS: 101
Of
David. A psalm.
1
I will sing of your love and justice;
to
you, O LORD, I will sing praise.
2
I will be careful to lead a blameless life--
when
will you come to me?
I
will walk in my house
with
blameless heart.
3
I will set before my eyes
no
vile thing.
The
deeds of faithless men I hate;
they
will not cling to me.
4
Men of perverse heart shall be far from me;
I
will have nothing to do with evil.
5
Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,
him
will I put to silence;
whoever
has haughty eyes and a proud heart,
him
will I not endure.
6
My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
that
they may dwell with me;
he
whose walk is blameless
will
minister to me.[7]
7
No one who practices deceit
will
dwell in my house;
no
one who speaks falsely
will
stand in my presence.
8
Every morning I will put to silence
all
the wicked in the land;
I
will cut off every evildoer
from
the city of the LORD. [8]
PSALMS: 131
A
song of ascents. Of David.
1
My heart is not proud, O LORD,
my
eyes are not haughty;
I
do not concern myself with great matters
or
things too wonderful for me.
2
But I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like
a weaned child with its mother,
like
a weaned child is my soul within me.
3
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both
now and forevermore. [9]
PROVERBS: 11
11
1 The LORD abhors
dishonest scales,
but
accurate weights are his delight.
2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but
with humility comes wisdom.
3
The integrity of the upright guides them,
but
the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
4
Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
but
righteousness delivers from death.
5
The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them,
but
the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
6
The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but
the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
7
When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes;
all
he expected from his power comes to nothing.
8
The righteous man is rescued from trouble,
and
it comes on the wicked instead.
9
With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor,
but
through knowledge the righteous escape.
10
When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
when
the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11
Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but
by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.[10]
12
A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor,
but
a man of understanding holds his tongue.
13
A gossip betrays a confidence,
but
a trustworthy man keeps a secret.
14
For lack of guidance a nation falls,
but
many advisers make victory sure.
15
He who puts up security for another will surely
suffer,
but
whoever refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe.
16
A kindhearted woman gains respect,
but
ruthless men gain only wealth.
17
A kind man benefits himself,
but
a cruel man brings trouble on himself.
18
The wicked man earns deceptive wages,
but
he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
19
The truly righteous man attains life,
but
he who pursues evil goes to his death.
20
The LORD detests men of perverse heart
but
he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
21
Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished,
but
those who are righteous will go free.[11]
22
Like a gold ring in a pig's snout
is
a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
23
The desire of the righteous ends only in good,
but
the hope of the wicked only in wrath.
24
One man gives freely, yet gains even more;
another
withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
25
A generous man will prosper;
he
who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
26
People curse the man who hoards grain,
but
blessing crowns him who is willing to sell.
27
He who seeks good finds goodwill,
but
evil comes to him who searches for it.
28
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but
the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
29
He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only
wind,
and
the fool will be servant to the wise.
30
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and
he who wins souls is wise.
31
If the righteous receive their due on earth,
how
much more the ungodly and the sinner! [12]
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 60:1 - 62:5
60 1
"Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory
of the LORD rises upon you.
2 See, darkness covers the earth
and thick
darkness is over the peoples,
but the LORD
rises upon you
and his glory
appears over you.
3 Nations will come to your light,
and kings to
the brightness of your dawn.
4 "Lift up your eyes and look about you:
All assemble
and come to you;
your sons
come from afar,
and your
daughters are carried on the arm.
5 Then you will look and be radiant,
your heart
will throb and swell with joy;
the wealth on
the seas will be brought to you,
to you the
riches of the nations will come.
6 Herds of camels will cover your land,
young camels
of Midian and Ephah.
And all from
Sheba will come,
bearing gold
and incense
and proclaiming
the praise of the LORD.
7 All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you,
the rams of
Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be
accepted as offerings on my altar,
and I will
adorn my glorious temple. [13]
8 "Who are these that fly along like clouds,
like doves to
their nests?
9 Surely the islands look to me;
in the lead
are the ships of Tarshish, A
bringing your
sons from afar,
with their
silver and gold,
to the honor
of the LORD your God,
the Holy One
of Israel,
for he has
endowed you with splendor.
10 "Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
and their
kings will serve you.
Though in
anger I struck you,
in favor I
will show you compassion.
11 Your gates will always stand open,
they will
never be shut, day or night,
so that men
may bring you the wealth of the nations--
their kings
led in triumphal procession.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
it will be
utterly ruined.
13 "The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
the pine, the
fir and the cypress together,
to adorn the
place of my sanctuary;
and I will
glorify the place of my feet.
14 The sons of your oppressors will come bowing before you;
all who
despise you will bow down at your feet [14]
and will call
you the City of the LORD,
Zion of the
Holy One of Israel.
15 "Although you have been forsaken and hated,
with no one
traveling through,
I will make
you the everlasting pride
and the joy
of all generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations
and be nursed
at royal breasts.
Then you will
know that I, the LORD, am your Savior,
your
Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,
and silver in
place of iron.
Instead of
wood I will bring you bronze,
and iron in
place of stones.
I will make
peace your governor
and righteousness
your ruler.
18 No longer will violence be heard in your land,
nor ruin or
destruction within your borders,
but you will
call your walls Salvation
and your
gates Praise.
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the
brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the LORD
will be your everlasting light,
and your God
will be your glory.
and your moon
will wane no more;
the LORD will
be your everlasting light,
and your days
of sorrow will end.
21 Then will all your people be righteous
and they will
possess the land forever.
They are the
shoot I have planted,
the work of
my hands,
for the
display of my splendor.
22 The least of you will become a thousand,
the smallest
a mighty nation.
I am the
LORD;
in its time I
will do this swiftly."
61 1
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on
me,
because the LORD has
anointed me
to preach good news to
the poor.
He has sent me to bind
up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for
the captives
and release from
darkness for the prisoners, A
2 to
proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance
of our God,
to comfort all who
mourn, [16]
3
and provide for those who grieve in Zion--
to bestow on them a crown
of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of
despair.
They will be called oaks
of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his
splendor.
4 They
will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places
long devastated;
they will renew the
ruined cities
that have been
devastated for generations.
5 Aliens
will shepherd your flocks;
foreigners will work
your fields and vineyards.
6 And
you will be called priests of the LORD,
you will be named
ministers of our God.
You will feed on the
wealth of nations,
and in their riches you
will boast.
7 Instead
of their shame
my people will receive a
double portion,
and instead of disgrace
they will rejoice in their
inheritance; [17]
and so they will inherit
a double portion in their land,
and everlasting joy will
be theirs.
8 "For I, the LORD, love justice;
I hate
robbery and iniquity.
In my
faithfulness I will reward them
and make an
everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their descendants will be known among the nations
and their
offspring among the peoples.
All who see
them will acknowledge
that they are
a people the LORD has blessed."
10 I
delight greatly in the LORD;
my soul rejoices in my
God.
For he has clothed me
with garments of salvation
and arrayed me in a robe
of righteousness,
as a bridegroom adorns
his head like a priest,
and as a bride adorns
herself with her jewels.
11 For
as the soil makes the sprout come up
and a garden causes seeds
to grow,
so the Sovereign LORD
will make righteousness and praise
spring up before all
nations. [18]
62 1
For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
for Jerusalem's sake I
will not remain quiet,
till her righteousness
shines out like the dawn,
her salvation like a
blazing torch.
2 The
nations will see your righteousness,
and all kings your
glory;
you will be called by a
new name
that the mouth of the
LORD will bestow.
3 You
will be a crown of splendor in the LORD's hand,
a royal diadem in the
hand of your God.
4 No
longer will they call you Deserted,
or name your land
Desolate.
But you will be called
Hephzibah, A
and your land Beulah B;
for the LORD will take
delight in you,
and your land will be
married.
5 As
a young man marries a maiden,
so will your sons C
marry you;
as a bridegroom rejoices
over his bride,
so will your God rejoice
over you. [19]
NEW TESTAMENT: PHILIPPINS 1:27 - 2:18
27 Whatever
happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then,
whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know
that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the
gospel
28 without
being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them
that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God. 29
For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on
him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the
same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
2 1
If you have any encouragement from being united with
Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any
tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider
others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to
your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your
attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who,
being in very nature A God,
did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but
made himself nothing,
taking the very nature B
of a servant,
being made in human
likeness.
8 And
being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to
death--
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore
God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 that
at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, [20]
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth,
11 and
every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the
Father.
12 Therefore,
my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now
much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and
trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act
according to his good purpose.
14 Do
everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become
blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved
generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you
hold out C the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of
Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. 17 But even if I am
being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from
your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too
should be glad and rejoice with me. [21]
