PROVERBS: 13
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 66:1 - 24
NEW TESTAMENT: PHILIPPIANS 3:4 - 21
PSALMS: 13
For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How
long will you hide your face from me?
2
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and
every day have sorrow in my heart?
How
long will my enemy triumph over me?
3
Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give
light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4
my enemy will say, "I have overcome him,"
and
my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5
But I trust in your unfailing love;
my
heart rejoices in your salvation.
6
I will sing to the LORD,
for
he has been good to me. [1]
PSALMS: 43
1
Vindicate A me, O God,
and
plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
rescue
me from deceitful and wicked men.
2
You are God my stronghold.
Why
have you rejected me?
Why
must I go about mourning,
oppressed
by the enemy?
3
Send forth your light and your truth,
let
them guide me;
let
them bring me to your holy mountain,
to
the place where you dwell.
4
Then will I go to the altar of God,
to
God, my joy and my delight.
I
will praise you with the harp,
O
God, my God.
5
Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why
so disturbed within me?
Put
your hope in God,
for
I will yet praise him,
my
Savior and my God.[2]
PSALMS: 73
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
Surely God is good to Israel,
to
those who are pure in heart.
2
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I
had nearly lost my foothold.
3
For I envied the arrogant
when
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4
They have no struggles;
their
bodies are healthy and strong. A
5
They are free from the burdens common to man;
they
are not plagued by human ills.
6
Therefore pride is their necklace;
they
clothe themselves with violence.
7
From their callous hearts comes iniquity B;
the
evil conceits of their minds know no limits.
8
They scoff, and speak with malice;
in
their arrogance they threaten oppression.
9
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and
their tongues take possession of the earth.
10
Therefore their people turn to them
and
drink up waters in abundance. C
11
They say, "How can God know?
Does
the Most High have knowledge?"
12
This is what the wicked are like--
always
carefree, they increase in wealth.[3]
A
psalm of Asaph.
13
Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure;
in
vain have I washed my hands in innocence.
14
All day long I have been plagued;
I
have been punished every morning.
15
If I had said, "I will speak thus,"
I
would have betrayed your children.
16
When I tried to understand all this,
it
was oppressive to me
17
till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then
I understood their final destiny.
18
Surely you place them on slippery ground;
you
cast them down to ruin.
19
How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely
swept away by terrors!
20
As a dream when one awakes,
so
when you arise, O Lord,
you
will despise them as fantasies.
21
When my heart was grieved
and
my spirit embittered,
22
I was senseless and ignorant;
I
was a brute beast before you.
23
Yet I am always with you;
you
hold me by my right hand.
24
You guide me with your counsel,
and
afterward you will take me into glory.
25
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And
earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but
God is the strength of my heart
and
my portion forever. [4]
27
Those who are far from you will perish;
you
destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I
have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I
will tell of all your deeds. [5]
PSALMS: 103
Of
David.
1
Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all
my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2
Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and
forget not all his benefits--
3
who forgives all your sins
and
heals all your diseases,
4
who redeems your life from the pit
and
crowns you with love and compassion,
5
who satisfies your desires with good things
so
that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6
The LORD works righteousness
and
justice for all the oppressed.
7
He made known his ways to Moses,
his
deeds to the people of Israel:
8
The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow
to anger, abounding in love.
9
He will not always accuse,
nor
will he harbor his anger forever;
10
he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or
repay us according to our iniquities.
11
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so
great is his love for those who fear him;
12
as far as the east is from the west,
so
far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13
As a father has compassion on his children,
so
the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14
for he knows how we are formed, [6]
he
remembers that we are dust.
15
As for man, his days are like grass,
he
flourishes like a flower of the field;
16
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and
its place remembers it no more.
17
But from everlasting to everlasting
the
LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and
his righteousness with their children's children--
18
with those who keep his covenant
and
remember to obey his precepts.
19
The LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and
his kingdom rules over all.
20
Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you
mighty ones who do his bidding,
who
obey his word.
21
Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you
his servants who do his will.
22
Praise the LORD, all his works
everywhere
in his dominion.
Praise
the LORD, O my soul. [7]
PSALMS: 133
A
song of ascents. Of David.
1
How good and pleasant it is
when
brothers live together in unity!
2
It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running
down on the beard,
running
down on Aaron's beard,
down
upon the collar of his robes.
3
It is as if the dew of Hermon
were
falling on Mount Zion.
For
there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even
life forevermore. [8]
PROVERBS: 13
13
1 A wise son heeds his
father's instruction,
but
a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
2
From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things,
but
the unfaithful have a craving for violence.
3
He who guards his lips guards his life,
but
he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
4
The sluggard craves and gets nothing,
but
the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
5
The righteous hate what is false,
but
the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
6
Righteousness guards the man of integrity,
but
wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7
One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another
pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
8
A man's riches may ransom his life,
but
a poor man hears no threat.
9
The light of the righteous shines brightly,
but
the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
10
Pride only breeds quarrels,
but
wisdom is found in those who take advice.
11
Dishonest money dwindles away,
but
he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. [9]
12
Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but
a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
13
He who scorns instruction will pay for it,
but
he who respects a command is rewarded.
14
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning
a man from the snares of death.
15
Good understanding wins favor,
but
the way of the unfaithful is hard. A
16
Every prudent man acts out of knowledge,
but
a fool exposes his folly.
17
A wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but
a trustworthy envoy brings healing.
18
He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but
whoever heeds correction is honored.
19
A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but
fools detest turning from evil.
20
He who walks with the wise grows wise,
but
a companion of fools suffers harm.
21
Misfortune pursues the sinner,
but
prosperity is the reward of the righteous.
22
A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's
children,
but
a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. [10]
23
A poor man's field may produce abundant food,
but
injustice sweeps it away.
24
He who spares the rod hates his son,
but
he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
25
The righteous eat to their hearts' content,
but
the stomach of the wicked goes hungry. [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 66:1 - 24
66 1
This is what the LORD says:
"Heaven is my throne,
and the earth
is my footstool.
Where is the
house you will build for me?
Where will my
resting place be?
2 Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they
came into being?"
declares the
LORD.
"This is
the one I esteem:
he who is
humble and contrite in spirit,
and trembles
at my word.
3 But whoever sacrifices a bull
is like one
who kills a man,
and whoever
offers a lamb,
like one who
breaks a dog's neck;
whoever makes
a grain offering
is like one
who presents pig's blood,
and whoever
burns memorial incense,
like one who
worships an idol.
They have
chosen their own ways,
and their
souls delight in their abominations;
4 so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
and will
bring upon them what they dread.
For when I
called, no one answered, [12]
when I spoke,
no one listened.
They did evil
in my sight
and chose
what displeases me."
5 Hear
the word of the LORD,
you who tremble at his
word:
"Your brothers who hate you,
and exclude
you because of my name, have said,
`Let the LORD
be glorified,
that we may
see your joy!'
Yet they will
be put to shame.
6 Hear that uproar from the city,
hear that
noise from the temple!
It is the
sound of the LORD
repaying his
enemies all they deserve.
7 "Before she goes into labor,
she gives
birth;
before the
pains come upon her,
she delivers
a son.
8 Who has ever heard of such a thing?
Who has ever
seen such things?
Can a country
be born in a day
or a nation
be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner
is Zion in labor
than she
gives birth to her children. [13]
9 Do I bring to the moment of birth
and not give
delivery?" says the LORD.
"Do I close up the womb
when I bring
to delivery?" says your God.
10 "Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
all you who
love her;
rejoice
greatly with her,
all you who
mourn over her.
11 For you will nurse and be satisfied
at her
comforting breasts;
you will
drink deeply
and delight
in her overflowing abundance."
12 For
this is what the LORD says:
"I will extend peace to her like a river,
and the
wealth of nations like a flooding stream;
you will
nurse and be carried on her arm
and dandled
on her knees.
13 As a mother comforts her child,
so will I
comfort you;
and you will
be comforted over Jerusalem."
14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice
and you will
flourish like grass;
the hand of
the LORD will be made known to his servants,
but his fury
will be shown to his foes. [14]
15 See, the LORD is coming with fire,
and his
chariots are like a whirlwind;
he will bring
down his anger with fury,
and his
rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For with fire and with his sword
the LORD will
execute judgment upon all men,
and many will
be those slain by the LORD.
17 "Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the
gardens, following the one in the midst of A those who eat the flesh of pigs and rats and other abominable
things--they will meet their end together," declares the
LORD.
18 "And I, because of their actions and their imaginations, am
about to come B and gather all
nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory.
19 "I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those
who survive to the nations--to Tarshish, to the Libyans C and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and
to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They
will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 And they will bring all your brothers, from all the
nations, to my holy mountain in Jerusalem as an offering to the LORD--on
horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels," says the
LORD. "They will bring them, as the Israelites
bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the LORD in ceremonially clean
vessels. 21 And I will select some
of them also to be priests and Levites," says the LORD.
22 "As
the new heavens and the new earth that I make will
endure before me," declares the LORD, "so will your name and descendants endure. 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to
another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says the LORD. 24 "And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of
those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be
quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind." [15]
NEW TESTAMENT:
PHILIPPIANS 3:4 - 21
4 though
I myself have reasons for such confidence.
If anyone else thinks he
has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:
5 circumcised
on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew
of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal,
persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.
7 But
whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What
is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider
them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not
having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is
through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the
fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11
and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not
that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I
press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers,
I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I
press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me
heavenward in Christ Jesus.
15 All
of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point
you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only
let us live up to what we have already attained.
17 Join
with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live
according to the pattern we gave you. 18 For, as I have often told
you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross
of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their
stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. 20
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from
there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him
to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that
they will be like his glorious body. [16]
