skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day
after day they pour forth speech;
night
after night they display knowledge.

There
is no speech or language
where
their voice is not heard. A

Their
voice B goes out into all the earth,
their
words to the ends of the world.
In
the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5
which
is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like
a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6
It
rises at one end of the heavens
and
makes its circuit to the other;
nothing
is hidden from its heat.
7
The
law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving
the soul.
The
statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making
wise the simple.
8
The
precepts of the LORD are right,
giving
joy to the heart.
The
commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving
light to the eyes.
9
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring
forever.
The
ordinances of the LORD are sure
and
altogether righteous. [1]

They
are more precious than gold,
than
much pure gold;
they
are sweeter than honey,
than
honey from the comb.
11
By
them is your servant warned;
in
keeping them there is great reward.

Who
can discern his errors?
Forgive
my hidden faults.

Hear
this, all you peoples;
listen,
all who live in this world,

low and high,
rich
and poor alike:

My
mouth will speak words of wisdom;
the
utterance from my heart will give understanding.
4
I
will turn my ear to a proverb;
with
the harp I will expound my riddle:
5
Why
should I fear when evil days come,
when
wicked deceivers surround me--
6
those
who trust in their wealth
and
boast of their great riches?
7
No
man can redeem the life of another
or
give to God a ransom for him--
8
the
ransom for a life is costly,
no
payment is ever enough--
9
that
he should live on forever
and
not see decay.
10
For
all can see that wise men die;
the
foolish and the senseless alike perish
and
leave their wealth to others.
11
Their
tombs will remain their houses A forever,
their
dwellings for endless generations,
though
they had B named lands after themselves. [3]

But
man, despite his riches, does not endure;
he
is C like the beasts that perish.

This
is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and
of their followers, who approve their sayings.

A
man who has riches without understanding

PSALMS: 79
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
O
God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they
have defiled your holy temple,
they
have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2
They
have given the dead bodies of your servants
as
food to the birds of the air,
the
flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3
They
have poured out blood like water
all
around Jerusalem,
and
there is no one to bury the dead.
4
We
are objects of reproach to our neighbors,
of
scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How
long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?
How
long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour
out your wrath on the nations
that
do not acknowledge you,
on
the kingdoms
that
do not call on your name;
7
for
they have devoured Jacob
and
destroyed his homeland.
8
Do
not hold against us the sins of the fathers;
may
your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for
we are in desperate need.
9
Help
us, O God our Savior,
for
the glory of your name;
deliver
us and forgive our sins
for
your name's sake.
10
Why
should the nations say,
"Where
is their God?" [5]
Before
our eyes, make known among the nations
that
you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.

May
the groans of the prisoners come before you;
by
the strength of your arm
preserve
those condemned to die.
12
Pay
back into the laps of our neighbors seven times
the
reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.
13
Then
we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
will
praise you forever;
from
generation to generation
we

For

O
God, whom I praise,
do
not remain silent,
2
for
wicked and deceitful men
have
opened their mouths against me;
they
have spoken against me with lying tongues.
3
With
words of hatred they surround me;
they
attack me without cause.
4
In
return for my friendship they accuse me,
but
I am a man of prayer.
5
They
repay me evil for good,
and
hatred for my friendship.
6
Appoint
A an evil man B to oppose him;
let
an accuser C stand at his right hand.
7
When
he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and
may his prayers condemn him.
8
May
his days be few;
may
another take his place of leadership.
9
May
his children be fatherless
and
his wife a widow.
10
May
his children be wandering beggars;

they be driven D from their ruined homes.

May
a creditor seize all he has;
may
strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.

no one extend kindness to him

the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD;

he never thought of doing a kindness,

hounded to death the poor
and
the needy and the brokenhearted.

He
loved to pronounce a curse--
may

found no pleasure in blessing--

it be F far from him.

He
wore cursing as his garment;
it
entered into his body like water,
into
his bones like oil.

May
it be like a cloak wrapped about him,
like
a belt tied forever around him.

May
this be the LORD's payment to my accusers,

those who speak evil of me.

But
you, O Sovereign LORD,
deal
well with me for your name's sake;
out
of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

For
I am poor and needy,
and
my heart is wounded within me.

I
fade away like an evening shadow;
I
am shaken off like a locust.

My
knees give way from fasting;

body is thin and gaunt.

I
am an object of scorn to my accusers;
when

Help
me, O LORD my God;
save
me in accordance with your love.

Let
them know that it is your hand,

you, O LORD, have done it.

may curse, but you will bless;

they attack they will be put to shame,

wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

With
my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD;

LORD, you have searched me
and
you know me.

know when I sit and when I rise;

perceive my thoughts from afar.

discern my going out and my lying down;

are familiar with all my ways.

a word is on my tongue
you
know it completely, O LORD.

You
hem me in--behind and before;
you
have laid your hand upon me.

Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too
lofty for me to attain.

Where
can I go from your Spirit?
Where
can I flee from your presence?

If
I go up to the heavens, you are there;

I make my bed in the depths, A you are there.

I rise on the wings of the dawn,

I settle on the far side of the sea,

there your hand will guide me,

the days ordained for me

precious to B me are your thoughts, O God!

vast is the sum of them!

I to count them,
they
would outnumber the grains of sand.

I awake,

am still with you.

If
only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away
from me, you bloodthirsty men!

They
speak of you with evil intent;
your
adversaries misuse your name.

Do
I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and
abhor those who rise up against you?

I
have nothing but hatred for them;
I
count them my enemies.
23
Search
me, O God, and know my heart;
test
me and know my anxious thoughts.
24
See
if there is any offensive way in me,
and
lead me in the way everlasting. [11]
PROVERBS: 19
19
1
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless
than
a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
It
is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
nor
to be hasty and miss the way.
3
A
man's own folly ruins his life,
yet
his heart rages against the LORD.
4
Wealth
brings many friends,
but
a poor man's friend deserts him.
5
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will not go free.
6
Many
curry favor with a ruler,
and
everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
7
A
poor man is shunned by all his relatives--
how
much more do his friends avoid him!
Though
he pursues them with pleading,
they
are nowhere to be found. A
8
He
who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he
who cherishes understanding prospers.
9
A
false witness will not go unpunished,
and
he who pours out lies will perish.
10
It
is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--
how
much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
11
A
man's wisdom gives him patience;
it
is to his glory to overlook an offense. [12]

A
king's rage is like the roar of a lion,
but
his favor is like dew on the grass.
13
A
foolish son is his father's ruin,
and
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.
14
Houses
and wealth are inherited from parents,
but
a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15
Laziness
brings on deep sleep,
and
the shiftless man goes hungry.
16
He
who obeys instructions guards his life,
but
he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.
17
He
who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and
he will reward him for what he has done.
18
Discipline
your son, for in that there is hope;
do
not be a willing party to his death.
19
A
hot-tempered man must pay the penalty;
if
you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
20
Listen
to advice and accept instruction,
and
in the end you will be wise.
21
Many
are the plans in a man's heart,
but
it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
22
What
a man desires is unfailing love B;
better
to be poor than a liar. [13]
23
The
fear of the LORD leads to life:
Then
one rests content, untouched by trouble.
24
The
sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he
will not even bring it back to his mouth!
25
Flog
a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke
a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26
He
who robs his father and drives out his mother
is
a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27
Stop
listening to instruction, my son,
and
you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28
A
corrupt witness mocks at justice,
and
the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
29
Penalties
are prepared for mockers,
and
beatings for the backs of fools. [14]

TESTAMENT: EZRA 7:1 - 8:20

After
these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son of
Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 2 the son of
Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 3 the son of Amariah,
the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4 the son of Zerahiah, the
son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5 the son of Abishua, the son of
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest—6
this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of
Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him
everything he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was on him. 7
Some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers
and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King
Artaxerxes.
8
Ezra
arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king. 9
He had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month,
and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the
gracious hand of his God was on him. 10 For Ezra had devoted himself
to the study and observance of the Law of the LORD, and to teaching its decrees
and laws in Israel.
11
This
is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra the priest and
teacher, a man learned in matters concerning the commands and decrees of the
LORD for Israel:
12 A Artaxerxes, king of kings,
To
Ezra the priest, a teacher of the Law of the God of heaven:
Greetings.
13
Now
I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including priests and
Levites, who wish to go to Jerusalem with you, may go. 14 You are
sent by the king and his seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem
with regard to the Law of your God, which is in your hand. 15
Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and
his advisers have freely given to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in
Jerusalem, 16 together with all the silver and gold you may obtain
from the province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people
and priests for the temple of their God in Jerusalem. 17 With this
money be sure to buy bulls, rams and male lambs, together with their grain
offerings and drink offerings, and sacrifice them on the altar of the temple of
your God in Jerusalem.
18
You
and your brother Jews may then do whatever seems best with the rest of the
silver and gold, in accordance with the will of your God. 19 Deliver
to the God of Jerusalem all the articles entrusted to you for worship in the
temple of your God.
20
And
anything else needed for the temple of your God that you may have occasion to
supply, you may provide from the royal treasury.
21
Now
I, King Artaxerxes, order all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates to provide with
diligence whatever Ezra the priest, a teacher of the [15]
Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you—22 up to a hundred talents
B of silver, a hundred cors C of wheat, a hundred baths
D of wine, a hundred baths E of olive oil, and salt
without limit. 23 Whatever the God of heaven has prescribed, let it
be done with diligence for the temple of the God of heaven. Why should there be
wrath against the realm of the king and of his sons? 24 You are also
to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute or duty on any of
the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants or other workers at
this house of God.
25
And
you, Ezra, in accordance with the wisdom of your God, which you possess, appoint
magistrates and judges to administer justice to all the people of
Trans-Euphrates--all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach any who
do not know them. 26 Whoever does not obey the law of your God and
the law of the king must surely be punished by death, banishment, confiscation
of property, or imprisonment.
27
Praise
be to the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put it into the king's heart to
bring honor to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem in this way 28 and
who has extended his good favor to me before the king and his advisers and all
the king's powerful officials. Because the hand of the LORD my God was on me, I
took courage and gathered leading men from Israel to go up with
me.

of

the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;

of
the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200
men;
5
of
the descendants of Zattu, A Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him
300 men;
6
of
the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
7
of
the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;
8
of
the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
9
of
the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men; [16]
10 of the descendants of Bani, B Shelomith son of
Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;

of
the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;
12
of
the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;
13
of
the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones, whose names were Eliphelet, Jeuel
and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
14
of
the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.
15
I
assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there three
days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there.
16 So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan,
Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who
were men of learning,
17
and
I sent them to Iddo, the leader in Casiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and
his kinsmen, the temple servants in Casiphia, so that they might bring
attendants to us for the house of our God. 18 Because the gracious
hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the
descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah's sons and
brothers, 18 men;
19
and
Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his
brothers and nephews, 20 men. 20 They also brought 220 of the temple
servants--a body that David and the officials had established to assist the
Levites. All were registered by name. [17]

1
So
then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with
the secret things of God. 2 Now it is required that those who have
been given a trust must prove faithful. 3 I care very little if I am
judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4
My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord
who judges me. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;
wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and
will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his
praise from God.
6
Now,
brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so
that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is
written." Then you will not take pride in one man over against another. 7
For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you
did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did
not?
8
Already
you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have become kings--and
that without us! How I wish that you really had become kings so that we might be
kings with you! 9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on
display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We
have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.
10 We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are
weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored!
11
To
this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally
treated, we are homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we
are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when
we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of
the earth, the refuse of the world.
14
I
am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children. 15
Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have
many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.
16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason
I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He
will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I
teach everywhere in every church.
18
Some
of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19 But I
will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not
only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21
What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a
gentle spirit? [18]
