1
The
LORD is my light and my salvation--

shall I fear?

LORD is the stronghold of my life--

evil men advance against me
to
devour my flesh, A

my enemies and my foes attack me,
they
will stumble and fall.
3
Though
an army besiege me,
my
heart will not fear;
though
war break out against me,
even
then will I be confident.

One
thing I ask of the LORD,
this
is what I seek:
that
I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all
the days of my life,
to
gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and
to seek him in his temple.

For
in the day of trouble
he
will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he
will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and
set me high upon a rock.

Then
my head will be exalted
above
the enemies who surround me;
at
his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;

will sing and make music to the LORD.

mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,

will say, `This C
one was born in Zion.'"

of Zion it will be said,
"This one and that one were born in
her,

How
good it is to sing praises to our God,
how
pleasant and fitting to praise him!

LORD builds up Jerusalem;

determines the number of the stars
and
calls them each by name.

Great
is our Lord and mighty in power;

27
1
Do not boast about tomorrow,
for
you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2
Let
another praise you, and not your own mouth;
someone
else, and not your own lips.
3
Stone
is heavy and sand a burden,
but
provocation by a fool is heavier than both.
4
Anger
is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but
who can stand before jealousy?
5
Better
is open rebuke
than
hidden love.
6
Wounds
from a friend can be trusted,
but
an enemy multiplies kisses.
7
He
who is full loathes honey,
but
to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8
Like
a bird that strays from its nest
is
a man who strays from his home.
9
Perfume
and incense bring joy to the heart,
and
the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest
counsel.
10
Do
not forsake your friend and the friend of your father,
and
do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes
you--
better
a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.

Be
wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;
then
I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. [8]

prudent see danger and take refuge,
but

quarrelsome wife is like

iron sharpens iron,

who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,

water reflects a face,

Death
and Destruction A are never satisfied,

neither are the eyes of man.

crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,

man is tested by the praise he receives.

Though
you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding
him like grain with a pestle,

Be
sure you know the condition of your flocks,
give
careful attention to your herds;

for
riches do not endure forever,

a crown is not secure for all generations.

When
the hay is removed and new growth appears
and
the grass from the hills is gathered in,

the
lambs will provide you with clothing,

the goats with the price of a field.

You
will have plenty of goats' milk
to
feed you and your family

TESTAMENT: NEHEMIAH 11:1 - 12:26

Now
the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast
lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while
the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns. 2 The people
commended all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
3
These
are the provincial leaders who settled in Jerusalem (now some Israelites,
priests, Levites, temple servants and descendants of Solomon's servants lived in
the towns of Judah, each on his own property in the various towns, 4
while other people from both Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem):
From
the descendants of Judah:
Athaiah
son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah,
the son of Mahalalel, a descendant of Perez; 5 and Maaseiah son of
Baruch, the son of Col-Hozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of
Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, a descendant of Shelah. 6 The
descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem totaled 468 able men.
7
From
the descendants of Benjamin:
Sallu
son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the
son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah, 8 and his
followers, Gabbai and Sallai--928 men. 9 Joel son of Zicri was their
chief officer, and Judah son of Hassenuah was over the Second District of the
city.
10
From
the priests:
Jedaiah;
the son of Joiarib; Jakin; 11 Seraiah son of Hilkiah, the son of
Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, supervisor
in the house of God,
12
and
their associates, who carried on work for the temple--822 men; Adaiah son of
Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of
Pashhur, the son of Malkijah, 13 and his associates, who were heads
of families--242 men; Amashsai son of Azarel, the son of Ahzai, the son of
Meshillemoth, the son of Immer,
14
and
his A associates, who were able men--128. Their chief officer was
Zabdiel son of Haggedolim. [11]

From
the Levites:
Shemaiah
son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni;
16 Shabbethai and Jozabad, two of the heads of the Levites, who had
charge of the outside work of the house of God; 17 Mattaniah son of
Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the director who led in thanksgiving
and prayer; Bakbukiah, second among his associates; and Abda son of Shammua, the
son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. 18 The Levites in the holy city
totaled 284.
19
The
gatekeepers:
Akkub,
Talmon and their associates, who kept watch at the gates--172 men.
20
The
rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the towns of
Judah, each on his ancestral property.
21
The
temple servants lived on the hill of Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge
of them.
22
The
chief officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, the son of
Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica. Uzzi was one of Asaph's
descendants, who were the singers responsible for the service of the house of
God. 23 The singers were under the king's orders, which regulated
their daily activity.
24
Pethahiah
son of Meshezabel, one of the descendants of Zerah son of Judah, was the king's
agent in all affairs relating to the people.
25
As
for the villages with their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath
Arba and its surrounding settlements, in Dibon and its settlements, in Jekabzeel
and its villages, 26 in Jeshua, in Moladah, in Beth Pelet, 27
in Hazar Shual, in Beersheba and its settlements, 28 in Ziklag,
in Meconah and its settlements, 29 in En Rimmon, in Zorah, in
Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam and their villages, in Lachish and its
fields, and in Azekah and its settlements. So they were living all the way from
Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.
31
The
descendants of the Benjamites from Geba lived in Micmash, Aija, Bethel and its
settlements, 32 in Anathoth, Nob and Ananiah, 33 in Hazor,
Ramah and Gittaim, 34 in Hadid, Zeboim and Neballat, 35 in
Lod and Ono, and in the Valley of the Craftsmen.

Some
of the divisions of the Levites of Judah settled in Benjamin. [12]

These
were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua.

The
Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who,
together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.
9
Bakbukiah
and Unni, their associates, stood opposite them in the services.
10
Jeshua
was the father of Joiakim, Joiakim the father of Eliashib, Eliashib the father
of Joiada, 11 Joiada the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan the father
of Jaddua.

In
the days of Joiakim, these were the heads of the priestly families:
of
Seraiah's family, Meraiah;
of
Jeremiah's, Hananiah;

of
Ezra's, Meshullam;
of
Amariah's, Jehohanan;

Malluch's, Jonathan;

The
family heads of the Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua,
as well as those of the priests, were recorded in the reign of Darius the
Persian. 23 The family heads among the descendants of Levi up to the
time of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the book of the annals. 24
And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of
Kadmiel, and their associates, who stood opposite them to give praise and
thanksgiving, one section responding to the other, as prescribed by David the
man of God.
25
Mattaniah,
Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the
storerooms at the gates. 26 They served in the days of Joiakim son of
Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra
the priest and scribe.

Therefore,
my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak to sensible people;
judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving
for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the
bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because
there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one
loaf.
18
Consider
the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the
altar? 19 Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is
anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, but the sacrifices of
pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be
participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and
the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the
table of demons. 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are
we stronger than he?
23
"Everything
is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is
permissible"--but not everything is constructive. 24 Nobody should
seek his own good, but the good of others.
25
Eat
anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
26 for, "The earth is the Lord's, and
everything in it." C
27
If
some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put
before you without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if anyone
says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for
the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake D—29
the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom
be judged by another's conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with
thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31
So
whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church
of God—33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am
not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. [14]
