For
the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith.
A A psalm of David.
1
O
LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
or
discipline me in your wrath.
2
Be
merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint;
O
LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony.
3
My
soul is in anguish.
How
long, O LORD, how long?
4
Turn,
O LORD, and deliver me;
save
me because of your unfailing love.
5
No
one remembers you when he is dead.
Who
praises you from the grave B?
6
I
am worn out from groaning;
all
night long I flood my bed with weeping
and
drench my couch with tears.
7
My
eyes grow weak with sorrow;
they
fail because of all my foes.
8
Away
from me, all you who do evil,
for
the LORD has heard my weeping.
9
The
LORD has heard my cry for mercy;
the
LORD accepts my prayer.
10
All
my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;
they
will turn back in sudden disgrace. [1]
PSALMS: 36
For
the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD.
1
An
oracle is within my heart
concerning
the sinfulness of the wicked: A
There
is no fear of God
before
his eyes.
2
For
in his own eyes he flatters himself
too
much to detect or hate his sin.
3
The
words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;
he
has ceased to be wise and to do good.
4
Even
on his bed he plots evil;
he
commits himself to a sinful course
and
does not reject what is wrong.
5
Your
love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your
faithfulness to the skies.
6
Your
righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your
justice like the great deep.
O
LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
7
How
priceless is your unfailing love!
Both
high and low among men
find
B refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8
They
feast on the abundance of your house;
you
give them drink from your river of delights.
9
For
with you is the fountain of life;
in
your light we see light.
10
Continue
your love to those who know you,
your
righteousness to the upright in heart.
11
May
the foot of the proud not come against me, [2]
nor
the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12
See
how the evildoers lie fallen--
thrown
down, not able to rise! [3]
PSALMS: 66
For
the director of music. A song. A psalm.
1
Shout
with joy to God, all the earth!
2
Sing
the glory of his name;
make
his praise glorious!
3
Say
to God, "How awesome are your deeds!
So
great is your power
that
your enemies cringe before you.
4
All
the earth bows down to you;
they
sing praise to you,
they
sing praise to your name."
Selah
5
Come
and see what God has done,
how
awesome his works in man's behalf!
6
He
turned the sea into dry land,
they
passed through the waters on foot--
come,
let us rejoice in him.
7
He
rules forever by his power,
his
eyes watch the nations--
let
not the rebellious rise up against him.
Selah
8
Praise
our God, O peoples,
let
the sound of his praise be heard;
9
he
has preserved our lives
and
kept our feet from slipping.
10
For
you, O God, tested us;
you
refined us like silver.
11
You
brought us into prison
and
laid burdens on our backs.
12
You
let men ride over our heads; [4]
we
went through fire and water,
but
you brought us to a place of abundance.
13
I
will come to your temple with burnt offerings
and
fulfill my vows to you--
14
vows
my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when
I was in trouble.
15
I
will sacrifice fat animals to you
and
an offering of rams;
I
will offer bulls and goats.
Selah
16
Come
and listen, all you who fear God;
let
me tell you what he has done for me.
17
I
cried out to him with my mouth;
his
praise was on my tongue.
18
If
I had cherished sin in my heart,
the
Lord would not have listened;
19
but
God has surely listened
and
heard my voice in prayer.
20
Praise
be to God,
who
has not rejected my prayer
or
withheld his love from me! [5]
PSALMS: 96
1
Sing
to the LORD a new song;
sing
to the LORD, all the earth.
2
Sing
to the LORD, praise his name;
proclaim
his salvation day after day.
3
Declare
his glory among the nations,
his
marvelous deeds among all peoples.
4
For
great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
he
is to be feared above all gods.
5
For
all the gods of the nations are idols,
but
the LORD made the heavens.
6
Splendor
and majesty are before him;
strength
and glory are in his sanctuary.
7
Ascribe
to the LORD, O families of nations,
ascribe
to the LORD glory and strength.
8
Ascribe
to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring
an offering and come into his courts.
9
Worship
the LORD in the splendor of his A holiness;
tremble
before him, all the earth.
10
Say
among the nations, "The LORD
reigns."
The
world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
he
will judge the peoples with equity.
11
Let
the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let
the sea resound, and all that is in it;
12
let
the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
Then
all the trees of the forest will sing for joy;
13
they
will sing before the LORD, for he comes,
he
comes to judge the earth.
He
will judge the world in righteousness
and
the peoples in his truth. [6]
PSALMS: 126
A
song of ascents.
1
When
the LORD brought back the captives to A Zion,
we
were like men who dreamed. B
2
Our
mouths were filled with laughter,
our
tongues with songs of joy.
Then
it was said among the nations,
"The LORD has done great things for
them."
3
The
LORD has done great things for us,
and
we are filled with joy.
4
Restore
our fortunes, C O LORD,
like
streams in the Negev.
5
Those
who sow in tears
will
reap with songs of joy.
6
He
who goes out weeping,
carrying
seed to sow,
will
return with songs of joy,
carrying
sheaves with him. [7]
PROVERBS: 6
6
1
My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
if
you have struck hands in pledge for another,
2
if
you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared
by the words of your mouth,
3
then
do this, my son, to free yourself,
since
you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
Go
and humble yourself;
press
your plea with your neighbor!
4
Allow
no sleep to your eyes,
no
slumber to your eyelids.
5
Free
yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like
a bird from the snare of the fowler.
6
Go
to the ant, you sluggard;
consider
its ways and be wise!
7
It
has no commander,
no
overseer or ruler,
8
yet
it stores its provisions in summer
and
gathers its food at harvest.
9
How
long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When
will you get up from your sleep?
10
A
little sleep, a little slumber,
a
little folding of the hands to rest--
11
and
poverty will come on you like a bandit
and
scarcity like an armed man. A
12
A
scoundrel and villain,
who
goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13
who winks with his eye,
signals
with his feet
and
motions with his fingers,
14
who plots evil with deceit in his heart--
he
always stirs up dissension.
15
Therefore
disaster will overtake him in an instant; [8]
he
will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
16
There
are six things the LORD hates,
seven
that are detestable to him:
17
haughty
eyes,
a
lying tongue,
hands
that shed innocent blood,
18
a
heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet
that are quick to rush into evil,
19
a
false witness who pours out lies
and
a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
20
My
son, keep your father's commands
and
do not forsake your mother's teaching.
21
Bind
them upon your heart forever;
fasten
them around your neck.
22
When
you walk, they will guide you;
when
you sleep, they will watch over you;
when
you awake, they will speak to you.
23
For
these commands are a lamp,
this
teaching is a light,
and
the corrections of discipline
are
the way to life,
24
keeping
you from the immoral woman,
from
the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.
25
Do
not lust in your heart after her beauty
or
let her captivate you with her eyes,
26
for
the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,
and
the adulteress preys upon your very life.
27
Can
a man scoop fire into his lap
without
his clothes being burned?
28
Can
a man walk on hot coals
without
his feet being scorched?
29
So
is he who sleeps with another man's wife; [9]
no
one who touches her will go unpunished.
30
Men
do not despise a thief if he steals
to
satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31
Yet
if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
though
it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32
But
a man who commits adultery lacks judgment;
whoever
does so destroys himself.
33
Blows
and disgrace are his lot,
and
his shame will never be wiped away;
34
for
jealousy arouses a husband's fury,
and
he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35
He
will not accept any compensation;
he
will refuse the bribe, however great it is. [10]
OLD
TESTAMENT: 2 CHRONICLES 17:1 -
18:24
17
1
Jehoshaphat
his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel. 2
He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and put garrisons
in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.
3
The
LORD was with Jehoshaphat because in his early years he walked in the ways his
father David had followed. He did not consult the Baals 4 but sought
the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of
Israel. 5 The LORD established the kingdom under his control; and all
Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.
6 His heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he
removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
7
In
the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah,
Nethanel and Micaiah to teach in the towns of Judah. 8 With them were
certain Levites--Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,
Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah--and the priests Elishama and Jehoram. 9
They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the
LORD; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.
10
The
fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so
that they did not make war with Jehoshaphat. 11 Some Philistines
brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him
flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred
goats.
12
Jehoshaphat
became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah 13
and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced
fighting men in Jerusalem. 14 Their [11]
enrollment by families was as follows:
From
Judah, commanders of units of 1,000:
Adnah
the commander, with 300,000 fighting men;
15
next,
Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;
16
next,
Amasiah son of Zicri, who volunteered himself for the service of the LORD, with
200,000.
17
From
Benjamin:
Eliada,
a valiant soldier, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields;
18
next,
Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.
19
These
were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified
cities throughout Judah.
18
1
Now
Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by
marriage. 2 Some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria.
Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged
him to attack Ramoth Gilead. 3 Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat
king of Judah, "Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?"
Jehoshaphat
replied, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the
war." 4 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek
the counsel of the LORD."
5
So
the king of Israel brought together the prophets--four hundred men--and asked
them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" [12]
"Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand."
6
But
Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire
of?"
7
The
king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we can
inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good
about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah."
"The
king should not say that," Jehoshaphat replied.
8
So
the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of
Imlah at once."
9
Dressed
in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were
sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance to the gate of
Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 10 Now
Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, "This is what the LORD says: `With these you will gore the Arameans until they are
destroyed.' "
11
All
the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. "Attack Ramoth Gilead and be
victorious," they said, "for the LORD will give it into the king's hand."
12
The
messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, as one man the other prophets are predicting success
for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably."
13
But
Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can
tell him only what my God says." [13]
14 When he arrived, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war
against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?"
"Attack and be victorious," he answered, "for they will be given into your hand."
15
The
king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but
the truth in the name of the LORD?"
16
Then
Micaiah answered, "I saw all Israel scattered on the
hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, `These people have no
master. Let each one go home in peace.' "
17
The
king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies
anything good about me, but only bad?"
18
Micaiah
continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw
the LORD sitting on his throne with all the host of heaven standing on his right
and on his left. 19 And the LORD
said, `Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and
going to his death there?'
"One
suggested this, and another that. 20
Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, `I will entice
him.'
"`By
what means?' the LORD asked.
21"`I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his
prophets,' he said.
"`You
will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. `Go and do it.'
22
"So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of
these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."
23
Then
Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. "Which way did
the spirit from A the LORD go when he [14]
went from me to speak to you?" he asked.
24
Micaiah
replied, "You will find out on the day you go to hide
in an inner room." [15]
NEW
TESTAMENT: ROMANS 9:25 -
10:13
25
As
he says in Hosea:
"I will call them `my people' who are not my people;
and
I will call her `my loved one' who is not my loved one,"
I
26
and,
"It
will happen that in the very place where it was said to them,
`You
are not my people,'
they
will be called `sons of the living God.'"
J
27
Isaiah
cries out concerning Israel:
"Though
the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,
only
the remnant will be saved.
28
For
the Lord will carry out
his
sentence on earth with speed and finality." K
29
It
is just as Isaiah said previously:
"Unless
the Lord Almighty
had
left us descendants,
we
would have become like Sodom,
we
would have been like Gomorrah." L
30
What
then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have
obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but Israel, who
pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32 Why not?
Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled
over the "stumbling stone." 33 As it is written: [16]
"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and
a rock that makes them fall,
and
the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
M
10
1
Brothers,
my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be
saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God,
but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know
the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they
did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law
so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5
Moses
describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them."
A 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, `Who will ascend into
heaven?' B "(that is, to bring
Christ down) 7 "or `Who will
descend into the deep? 'C "(that
is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your
heart," D that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:
9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God
raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10
For
it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your
mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says,
"Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to
shame." E 12 For there is no difference between Jew
and [17]
Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,
13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord will be saved." F [18]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
