A
psalm of David.
1
Ascribe
to the LORD, O mighty ones,
ascribe
to the LORD glory and strength.
2
Ascribe
to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship
the LORD in the splendor of his A holiness.
3
The
voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the
God of glory thunders,
the
LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
4
The
voice of the LORD is powerful;
the
voice of the LORD is majestic.
5
The
voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the
LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6
He
makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
Sirion
B like a young wild ox.
7
The
voice of the LORD strikes
with
flashes of lightning.
8
The
voice of the LORD shakes the desert;
the
LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9
The
voice of the LORD twists the oaks C
and
strips the forests bare.
And
in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10
The
LORD sits D enthroned over the flood;
the
LORD is enthroned as King forever.
11
The
LORD gives strength to his people;
the
LORD blesses his people with peace. [1]
PSALMS: 59
For
the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam.
A When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill
him.
1
Deliver
me from my enemies, O God;
protect
me from those who rise up against me.
2
Deliver
me from evildoers
and
save me from bloodthirsty men.
3
See
how they lie in wait for me!
Fierce
men conspire against me
for
no offense or sin of mine, O LORD.
4
I
have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
Arise
to help me; look on my plight!
5O
LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel,
rouse
yourself to punish all the nations;
show
no mercy to wicked traitors.
Selah
6
They
return at evening,
snarling
like dogs,
and
prowl about the city.
7
See
what they spew from their mouths--
they
spew out swords from their lips,
and
they say, "Who can hear us?"
8
But
you, O LORD, laugh at them;
you
scoff at all those nations.
9
O
my Strength, I watch for you;
you,
O God, are my fortress, 10 my loving God. [2]
God
will go before me
and
will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11
But
do not kill them, O Lord our shield, B
or
my people will forget.
In
your might make them wander about,
and
bring them down.
12
For
the sins of their mouths,
for
the words of their lips,
let
them be caught in their pride.
For
the curses and lies they utter,
13
consume
them in wrath,
consume
them till they are no more.
Then
it will be known to the ends of the earth
that
God rules over Jacob. Selah
14
They
return at evening,
snarling
like dogs,
and
prowl about the city.
15
They
wander about for food
and
howl if not satisfied.
16
But
I will sing of your strength,
in
the morning I will sing of your love;
for
you are my fortress,
my
refuge in times of trouble.
17
O
my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you,
O God, are my fortress, my loving God. [3]
PSALMS: 89
A
maskil A of Ethan the Ezrahite.
1
I
will sing of the LORD's great love forever;
with
my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all
generations.
2
I
will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that
you established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
3
You
said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen
one,
I
have sworn to David my servant,
4 `I
will establish your line forever
and
make your throne firm through all generations.'"
Selah
5
The
heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,
your
faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
6
For
who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?
Who
is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?
7
In
the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
he
is more awesome than all who surround him.
8
O
LORD God Almighty, who is like you?
You
are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
9
You
rule over the surging sea;
when
its waves mount up, you still them.
10
You
crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
with
your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
11
The
heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
you
founded the world and all that is in it.
12
You
created the north and the south;
Tabor
and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
13
Your
arm is endued with power;
your
hand is strong, your right hand exalted. [4]
14
Righteousness
and justice are the foundation of your throne;
love
and faithfulness go before you.
15
Blessed
are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who
walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.
16
They
rejoice in your name all day long;
they
exult in your righteousness.
17
For
you are their glory and strength,
and
by your favor you exalt our horn. B
18
Indeed,
our shield C belongs to the LORD,
our
king to the Holy One of Israel.
19
Once
you spoke in a vision,
to
your faithful people you said:
"I have bestowed strength on a
warrior;
I
have exalted a young man from among the people.
20 I
have found David my servant;
with
my sacred oil I have anointed him.
21 My
hand will sustain him;
surely
my arm will strengthen him.
22 No
enemy will subject him to tribute;
no
wicked man will oppress him.
23 I
will crush his foes before him
and
strike down his adversaries.
24 My
faithful love will be with him,
and
through my name his horn D
will be exalted.
25 I
will set his hand over the sea,
his
right hand over the rivers.
26 He
will call out to me, `You are my Father,
my
God, the Rock my Savior.'
27 I
will also appoint him my firstborn,
the
most exalted of the kings of the earth.
28 I
will maintain my love to him forever,
and
my covenant with him will never fail.
his
throne as long as the heavens endure.
30"If his sons forsake my law
and
do not follow my statutes,
31
if
they violate my decrees
and
fail to keep my commands,
32 I
will punish their sin with the rod,
their
iniquity with flogging;
33 but
I will not take my love from him,
nor
will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I
will not violate my covenant
or
alter what my lips have uttered.
35 Once
for all, I have sworn by my holiness--
and
I will not lie to David--
36 that
his line will continue forever
and
his throne endure before me like the sun;
37 it
will be established forever like the moon,
the
faithful witness in the sky."
Selah
38
But
you have rejected, you have spurned,
you
have been very angry with your anointed one.
39
You
have renounced the covenant with your servant
and
have defiled his crown in the dust.
40
You
have broken through all his walls
and
reduced his strongholds to ruins.
41
All
who pass by have plundered him;
he
has become the scorn of his neighbors.
42
You
have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you
have made all his enemies rejoice.
43
You
have turned back the edge of his sword
and
have not supported him in battle. [6]
44
You
have put an end to his splendor
and
cast his throne to the ground.
45
You
have cut short the days of his youth;
you
have covered him with a mantle of shame.
Selah
46
How
long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?
How
long will your wrath burn like fire?
47
Remember
how fleeting is my life.
For
what futility you have created all men!
48
What
man can live and not see death,
or
save himself from the power of the grave E?
Selah
49
O
Lord, where is your former great love,
which
in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50
Remember,
Lord, how your servant hasF been mocked,
how
I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51
the
taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD,
with
which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.
52
Praise
be to the LORD forever!
Amen
and Amen. [7]

make music to him with tambourine and harp.
4
For
the LORD takes delight in his people;
he
crowns the humble with salvation.
5
Let
the saints rejoice in this honor
and
sing for joy on their beds.
6
May
the praise of God be in their mouths
and
a double-edged sword in their hands,
7
to
inflict vengeance on the nations
and
punishment on the peoples,
8
to
bind their kings with fetters,
their
nobles with shackles of iron,
9
to
carry out the sentence written against them.
This
is the glory of all his saints.
Praise
the LORD. [21]
PROVERBS: 29
29
1
A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes
will
suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
2
When
the righteous thrive, the people rejoice;
when
the wicked rule, the people groan.
3
A
man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,
but
a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4
By
justice a king gives a country stability,
but
one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
5
Whoever
flatters his neighbor
is
spreading a net for his feet.
6
An
evil man is snared by his own sin,
but
a righteous one can sing and be glad.
7
The
righteous care about justice for the poor,
but
the wicked have no such concern.
8
Mockers
stir up a city,
but
wise men turn away anger.
9
If
a wise man goes to court with a fool,
the
fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
10
Bloodthirsty
men hate a man of integrity
and
seek to kill the upright. [22]
11
A
fool gives full vent to his anger,
but
a wise man keeps himself under control.
12
If
a ruler listens to lies,
all
his officials become wicked.
13
The
poor man and the oppressor have this in common:
The
LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
14
If
a king judges the poor with fairness,
his
throne will always be secure.
15
The
rod of correction imparts wisdom,
but
a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
16
When
the wicked thrive, so does sin,
but
the righteous will see their downfall.
17
Discipline
your son, and he will give you peace;
he
will bring delight to your soul.
18
Where
there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
but
blessed is he who keeps the law.
19
A
servant cannot be corrected by mere words;
though
he understands, he will not respond.
20
Do
you see a man who speaks in haste?
There
is more hope for a fool than for him.
21
If
a man pampers his servant from youth,
he
will bring grief A in the end. [23]
22
An
angry man stirs up dissension,
and
a hot-tempered one commits many sins.
23
A
man's pride brings him low,
but
a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
24
The
accomplice of a thief is his own enemy;
he
is put under oath and dare not testify.
25
Fear
of man will prove to be a snare,
but
whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
26
Many
seek an audience with a ruler,
but
it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
27
The
righteous detest the dishonest;
the
wicked detest the upright. [24]
OLD
TESTAMENT: EZEKIEL 37:1 - 38:23
37
1
The
hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD
and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led
me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the
valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?"
I
said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know."
4
Then
he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to
them, `Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the
Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breathA enter you,
and you will come to life. 6
I will attach tendons to you and make
flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you
will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' "
7
So
I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a
rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I
looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there
was no breath in them.
9
Then
he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son
of man, and say to it, `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four
winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.'
"10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they
came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army.
11
Then
he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole
house of Israel. They say, `Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are
cut off.' 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: `This is what the
Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you
up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people,
will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from
them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will
settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and
I have done it, declares the LORD.' "
15
The
word of the LORD came to me: 16 "Son of
man, take a stick of wood and write on it, `Belonging to Judah and the
Israelites associated with him.' Then take another stick of wood, and write on
it, `Ephraim's stick, belonging to Joseph and all the house of Israel associated
with him.' 17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become
one in your hand.
18 "When
your countrymen ask you, `Won't you tell us what you mean by this?'
19 say
to them, `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am going to take the stick of
Joseph--which is in Ephraim's hand--and of the Israelite tribes associated with
him, and join it to Judah's stick, making them a single stick of wood, and they
will become one in my hand.' 20 Hold
before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21 and
say to them, [25]`This
is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations
where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back
into their own land. 22 I
will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be
one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided
into two kingdoms. 23
They
will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of
their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,
B
and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.
24 "`My
servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They
will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees. 25 They
will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your fathers
lived. They and their children and their children's children will live there
forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever. 26 I
will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I
will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary
among them forever. 27 My
dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my
people. 28 Then
the nations will know that I the LORD make Israel holy, when my sanctuary is
among them forever.'"
38
1
The
word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man,
set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of
A Meshech and Tubal; prophesy
against him 3 and say: `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against
you, O Gog, chief prince of B Meshech and Tubal. 4
I will turn you around, put hooks in your
jaws and bring you out with your whole army--your horses, your horsemen fully
armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing
their swords. 5 Persia, Cush C
and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, 6 also Gomer with all
its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops--the many
nations with you.
7 "`Get
ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command
of them. 8 After
many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land
that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the
mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out
from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. 9 You
and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a
storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.
10 "`This
is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind
and you will devise an evil scheme. 11 You
will say, "I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful
and unsuspecting people--all of them living without walls and without gates and
bars. 12 I
will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the
people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the
center of the land." 13 Sheba
and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all her villages D
will say to you, "Have you [26]
come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and
gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?" '
14 "Therefore,
son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: `This is what the Sovereign LORD says: In
that day, when my people Israel are living in safety, will you not take notice
of it? 15 You will come from your place in the far north, you and
many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty
army. 16 You
will advance against my people Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days
to come, O Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know
me when I show myself holy through you before their eyes.
17
"`This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Are you not the one I
spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel? At that time they
prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. 18 This is what will
happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be
aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD.
19 In
my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great
earthquake in the land of Israel. 20 The
fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature
that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will
tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will
crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. 21 I
will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign
LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22 I
will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down
torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on
the many nations with him. 23 And
so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the
sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.' [27]
NEW
TESTAMENT: JAMES 1:19 -
2:17
19
My
dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to
speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man's anger does not bring
about the righteous life that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of
all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word
planted in you, which can save you.
22
Do
not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
23
Anyone
who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at
his face in a mirror, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately
forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into
the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting
what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
26
If
anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his
tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to
look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being
polluted by the world.
2
1
My
brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.
2
Suppose
a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor
man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention
to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say
to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4
have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil
thoughts?
5
Listen,
my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world
to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
6
But
you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they
not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones
who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8
If
you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," A you
are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are
convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole
law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11
For he who said, "Do not commit
adultery," B also said, "Do not
murder." C If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder,
you have become a lawbreaker.
12
Speak
and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,
13
because
judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy
triumphs over judgment! [28]
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but
has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister
is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, "Go,
I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical
needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is
not accompanied by action, is dead. [29]

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
