For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
How
long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How
long will you hide your face from me?
2
How
long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and
every day have sorrow in my heart?
How
long will my enemy triumph over me?
3
Look
on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give
light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4
my
enemy will say, "I have overcome him,"
and
my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5
But
I trust in your unfailing love;
my
heart rejoices in your salvation.
6
I
will sing to the LORD,
for
he has been good to me. 1
PSALMS:

1
Vindicate
A
me, O God,
and
plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
rescue
me from deceitful and wicked men.
2
You
are God my stronghold.
Why
have you rejected me?
Why
must I go about mourning,
oppressed
by the enemy?
3
Send
forth your light and your truth,
let
them guide me;
let
them bring me to your holy mountain,
to
the place where you dwell.
4
Then
will I go to the altar of God,
to
God, my joy and my delight.
I
will praise you with the harp,
O
God, my God.
5
Why
are you downcast, O my soul?
Why
so disturbed within me?
Put
your hope in God,
for
I will yet praise him,
my
Savior and my God. 2
PSALMS:
73
A
psalm of Asaph.
1
Surely
God is good to Israel,
to
those who are pure in heart.
2
But
as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I
had nearly lost my foothold.
3
For
I envied the arrogant
when
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4
They
have no struggles;
their
bodies are healthy and strong. A
5
They
are free from the burdens common to man;
they
are not plagued by human ills.
6
Therefore
pride is their necklace;
they
clothe themselves with violence.
7
From
their callous hearts comes iniquity B;
the
evil conceits of their minds know no limits.
8
They
scoff, and speak with malice;
in
their arrogance they threaten oppression.
9
Their
mouths lay claim to heaven,
and
their tongues take possession of the earth.
10
Therefore
their people turn to them
and
drink up waters in abundance. C
11
They
say, "How can God know?
Does
the Most High have knowledge?"
12
This
is what the wicked are like--
always
carefree, they increase in wealth. 3
A
psalm of Asaph.
13
Surely
in vain have I kept my heart pure;
in
vain have I washed my hands in innocence.
14
All
day long I have been plagued;
I
have been punished every morning.
15
If
I had said, "I will speak thus,"
I
would have betrayed your children.
16
When
I tried to understand all this,
it
was oppressive to me
17
till
I entered the sanctuary of God;
then
I understood their final destiny.
18
Surely
you place them on slippery ground;
you
cast them down to ruin.
19
How
suddenly are they destroyed,
completely
swept away by terrors!
20
As
a dream when one awakes,
so
when you arise, O Lord,
you
will despise them as fantasies.
21
When
my heart was grieved
and
my spirit embittered,
22
I
was senseless and ignorant;
I
was a brute beast before you.
23
Yet
I am always with you;
you
hold me by my right hand.
24
You
guide me with your counsel,
and
afterward you will take me into glory.
25
Whom
have I in heaven but you?
And
earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26
My
flesh and my heart may fail,
but
God is the strength of my heart
and
my portion forever. 4
27
Those
who are far from you will perish;
you
destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28
But
as for me, it is good to be near God.
I
have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I
will tell of all your deeds. 5
PSALMS:
103
Of
David.
1
Praise
the LORD, O my soul;
all
my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2
Praise
the LORD, O my soul,
and
forget not all his benefits--
3
who
forgives all your sins
and
heals all your diseases,
4
who
redeems your life from the pit
and
crowns you with love and compassion,
5
who
satisfies your desires with good things
so
that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6
The
LORD works righteousness
and
justice for all the oppressed.
7
He
made known his ways to Moses,
his
deeds to the people of Israel:
8
The
LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow
to anger, abounding in love.
9
He
will not always accuse,
nor
will he harbor his anger forever;
10
he
does not treat us as our sins deserve
or
repay us according to our iniquities.
11
For
as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so
great is his love for those who fear him;
12
as
far as the east is from the west,
so
far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13
As
a father has compassion on his children,
so
the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14
for
he knows how we are formed, 6
he
remembers that we are dust.
15
As
for man, his days are like grass,
he
flourishes like a flower of the field;
16
the
wind blows over it and it is gone,
and
its place remembers it no more.
17
But
from everlasting to everlasting
the
LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and
his righteousness with their children's children--
18
with
those who keep his covenant
and
remember to obey his precepts.
19
The
LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and
his kingdom rules over all.
20
Praise
the LORD, you his angels,
you
mighty ones who do his bidding,
who
obey his word.
21
Praise
the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you
his servants who do his will.
22
Praise
the LORD, all his works
everywhere
in his dominion.
Praise
the LORD, O my soul. 7

A
song of ascents. Of David.
1
How
good and pleasant it is
when
brothers live together in unity!
2
It
is like precious oil poured on the head,
running
down on the beard,
running
down on Aaron's beard,
down
upon the collar of his robes.
3
It
is as if the dew of Hermon
were
falling on Mount Zion.
For
there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even
life forevermore. 8
PROVERBS:

1
A wise son heeds his father's instruction,
but
a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
2
From
the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things,
but
the unfaithful have a craving for violence.
3
He
who guards his lips guards his life,
but
he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
4
The
sluggard craves and gets nothing,
but
the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
5
The
righteous hate what is false,
but
the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
6
Righteousness
guards the man of integrity,
but
wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7
One
man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another
pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
8
A
man's riches may ransom his life,
but
a poor man hears no threat.
9
The
light of the righteous shines brightly,
but
the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
10
Pride
only breeds quarrels,
but
wisdom is found in those who take advice.
11
Dishonest
money dwindles away,
but
he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. 9
12
Hope
deferred makes the heart sick,
but
a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
13
He
who scorns instruction will pay for it,
but
he who respects a command is rewarded.
14
The
teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning
a man from the snares of death.
15
Good
understanding wins favor,
but
the way of the unfaithful is hard. A
16
Every
prudent man acts out of knowledge,
but
a fool exposes his folly.
17
A
wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but
a trustworthy envoy brings healing.
18
He
who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but
whoever heeds correction is honored.
19
A
longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but
fools detest turning from evil.
20
He
who walks with the wise grows wise,
but
a companion of fools suffers harm.
21
Misfortune
pursues the sinner,
but
prosperity is the reward of the righteous.
22
A
good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children,
but
a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. 10
23
A
poor man's field may produce abundant food,
but
injustice sweeps it away.
24
He
who spares the rod hates his son,
but
he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
25
The
righteous eat to their hearts' content,
but
the stomach of the wicked goes hungry. 11
OLD
TESTAMENT:
2 SAMUEL 19:11 - 20:13
11
King
David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: "Ask
the elders of Judah, `Why should you be the last to bring the king
back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has
reached the king at his quarters? 12
You
are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the
last to bring back the king?' 13
And
say to Amasa, `Are you not my own flesh and blood? May God deal with
me, be it ever so severely, if from now on you are not the commander
of my army in place of Joab.'"
14
He
won over the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one
man. They sent word to the king, "Return, you and all your men."
15
Then
the king returned and went as far as the Jordan.
Now
the men of Judah had come to Gilgal to go out and meet the king and
bring him across the Jordan. 16
Shimei
son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of
Judah to meet King David. 17
With
him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of
Saul's household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They
rushed to the Jordan, where the king was. 18
They
crossed at the ford to take the king's household over and to do
whatever he wished.
When
Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the
king 19
and
said to him, "May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember
how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left
Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind. 20
For
I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as
the first of the whole house of Joseph to come down and meet my lord
the king." 12
21
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, "Shouldn't Shimei be put to death
for this? He cursed the LORD's anointed."
22
David
replied, "What do you and I have in common, you sons of Zeruiah?
This day you have become my adversaries! Should anyone be put to
death in Israel today? Do I not know that today I am king over
Israel?" 23
So
the king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." And the king
promised him on oath.
24
Mephibosheth,
Saul's grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken
care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from
the day the king left until the day he returned safely. 25
When
he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, "Why
didn't you go with me, Mephibosheth?"
26
He
said, "My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said,
`I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with
the king.' But Ziba my servant betrayed me. 27
And
he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king
is like an angel of God; so do whatever pleases you. 28
All
my grandfather's descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord
the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who sat at
your table. So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the
king?"
29
The
king said to him, "Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide
the fields."
30
Mephibosheth
said to the king, "Let him take everything, now 13that
my lord the king has arrived home safely."
31
Barzillai
the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with
the king and to send him on his way from there. 32
Now
Barzillai was a very old man, eighty years of age. He had provided
for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy
man. 33
The
king said to Barzillai, "Cross over with me and stay with me in
Jerusalem, and I will provide for you."
34
But
Barzillai answered the king, "How many more years will I live,
that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king? 35
I
am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is
good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks?
Can I still hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your
servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 36
Your
servant will cross over the Jordan with the king for a short
distance, but why should the king reward me in this way? 37
Let
your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of
my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross
over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever pleases you."
38
The
king said, "Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for
him whatever pleases you. And anything you desire from me I will do
for you."
39
So
all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over.
The king kissed Barzillai and gave him his blessing, and Barzillai
returned to his home.
40
When
the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the
troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel had taken 14the
king over.
41
Soon
all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, "Why
did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him
and his household across the Jordan, together with all his men?"
42
All
the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "We did this
because the king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about
it? Have we eaten any of the king's provisions? Have we taken
anything for ourselves?"
43
Then
the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, "We have ten shares
in the king; and besides, we have a greater claim on David than you
have. So why do you treat us with contempt? Were we not the first to
speak of bringing back our king?"
But
the men of Judah responded even more harshly than the men of Israel.
20
1
Now
a troublemaker named Sheba son of Bicri, a Benjamite, happened to be
there. He sounded the trumpet and shouted,
"We
have no share in David,
no
part in Jesse's son!
Every
man to his tent, O Israel!"
2
So
all the men of Israel deserted David to follow Sheba son of Bicri.
But the men of Judah stayed by their king all the way from the Jordan
to Jerusalem.
3
When
David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines
he had left to take care of the palace and put them in a house under
guard. He provided for them, but did not lie with them. They were
kept in confinement till the day of their death, living as widows.
4
Then
the king said to Amasa, "Summon the men of Judah to come to me
within three days, and be here yourself." 5
But
when Amasa went to summon Judah, he took longer than the time the
king had set for him.
6
David
said to Abishai, "Now Sheba son of Bicri will do us more harm
than Absalom did. Take your master's men and pursue him, or he will
find fortified cities and escape from us." 7
So
Joab's men and the Kerethites and Pelethites and all the mighty
warriors went out under the command of Abishai. They marched out from
Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bicri.
8
While
they were at the great rock in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab
was wearing his military tunic, and strapped over it at his waist was
a belt with a dagger in its sheath. As he stepped forward, it dropped
out of its sheath.
9
Joab
said to Amasa, "How are you, my brother?" Then Joab took
Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10
Amasa
was not on his guard against the dagger in Joab's hand, and Joab
plunged it into his belly, and his intestines spilled out on the
ground. Without being stabbed again, Amasa died. Then Joab and his 15
brother
Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bicri.
11
One
of Joab's men stood beside Amasa and said, "Whoever favors Joab,
and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab!" 12
Amasa
lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the road, and the man saw
that all the troops came to a halt there. When he realized that
everyone who came up to Amasa stopped, he dragged him from the road
into a field and threw a garment over him. 13
After
Amasa had been removed from the road, all the men went on with Joab
to pursue Sheba son of Bicri. 16
NEW
TESTAMENT:
JOHN 21:1 - 25
21
1
Afterward
Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. A
It happened this way: 2
Simon
Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the
sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3
"I'm
going out to fish,"
Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you."
So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught
nothing.
4
Early
in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not
realize that it was Jesus.
5
He
called out to them, "Friends,
haven't you any fish?"
"No,"
they answered.
6
He
said, "Throw
your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some."
When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the
large number of fish.
7
Then
the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It
is the Lord!"
As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It
is the Lord,"
he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and
jumped into the water. 8
The
other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish,
for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. B
9
When
they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it,
and some bread.
10
Jesus
said to them, "Bring
some of the fish you have just caught."
11
Simon
Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large
fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12
Jesus
said to them, "Come
and have breakfast."
None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They
knew it was the Lord. 13
Jesus
came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the 17
same with the fish. 14
This
was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was
raised from the dead.
15
When
they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon
son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"
"Yes,
Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."
Jesus
said, "Feed
my lambs."
16
Again
Jesus said, "Simon
son of John, do you truly love me?"
He
answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus
said, "Take
care of my sheep."
17
The
third time he said to him, "Simon
son of John, do you love me?"
Peter
was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do
you love me?"
He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."
Jesus
said, "Feed
my sheep. 18
I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and
went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your
hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not
want to go."
19
Jesus
said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify
God. Then he said to him, "Follow
me!"

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
