is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which
yields its fruit in season
and
whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever
he does prospers.
4 Not
so the wicked!
They
are like chaff
that
the wind blows away.
5 Therefore
the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor
sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For
the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but
the way of the wicked will perish. [1]
PSALMS: 31
For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 In
you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
let
me never be put to shame;
deliver
me in your righteousness.
2 Turn
your ear to me,
come
quickly to my rescue;
be
my rock of refuge,
a
strong fortress to save me.
3 Since
you are my rock and my fortress,
for
the sake of your name lead and guide me.
4 Free
me from the trap that is set for me,
for
you are my refuge.
5 Into
your hands I commit my spirit;
redeem
me, O LORD, the God of truth.
6 I
hate those who cling to worthless idols;
I
trust in the LORD.
7 I
will be glad and rejoice in your love,
for
you saw my affliction
and
knew the anguish of my soul.

have not handed me over to the enemy
but
have set my feet in a spacious place.
9 Be
merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress;
my
eyes grow weak with sorrow,

My life is consumed by anguish

Because of all my enemies,

am the utter contempt of my neighbors;

am a dread to my friends--

who see me on the street flee from me.

I am forgotten by them as though I were dead;

have become like broken pottery.

For I hear the slander of many;

is terror on every side;

conspire against me
and
plot to take my life.

But I trust in you, O LORD;

say, "You are my God."

My times are in your hands;
deliver
me from my enemies

from those who pursue me.

Let your face shine on your servant;
save
me in your unfailing love.
17
Let me not be put to shame, O LORD,
for
I have cried out to you;
but
let the wicked be put to shame
and
lie silent in the grave. B

Let their lying lips be silenced,
for
with pride and contempt
they
speak arrogantly against the righteous.
19
How great is your goodness,
which
you have stored up for those who fear you,
which
you bestow in the sight of men
on
those who take refuge in you.

In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from
the intrigues of men;
in
your dwelling you keep them safe [3]

accusing tongues.

Praise be to the LORD,
for
he showed his wonderful love to me
when
I was in a besieged city.

In my alarm I said,
"I
am cut off from your sight!"
Yet
you heard my cry for mercy
when
I called to you for help.

Love the LORD, all his saints!
The
LORD preserves the faithful,
but
the proud he pays back in full.

Be strong and take heart,
all

For

1 Hear
my cry, O God;
listen
to my prayer.
2 From
the ends of the earth I call to you,
I
call as my heart grows faint;
lead
me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For
you have been my refuge,
a
strong tower against the foe.
4 I
long to dwell in your tent forever
and
take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
Selah
5 For
you have heard my vows, O God;
you
have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6 Increase
the days of the king's life,
his
years for many generations.
7 May
he be enthroned in God's presence forever;
appoint
your love and faithfulness to protect him.
8 Then
will I ever sing praise to your name
and
fulfill my vows day after day. [5]
PSALMS: 91
1 He
who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will
rest in the shadow of the Almighty. A
2 I
will say B of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my
God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely
he will save you from the fowler's snare
and
from the deadly pestilence.
4 He
will cover you with his feathers,
and
under his wings you will find refuge;
his
faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You
will not fear the terror of night,
nor
the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor
the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor
the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A
thousand may fall at your side,
ten
thousand at your right hand,
but
it will not come near you.
8 You
will only observe with your eyes
and
see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If
you make the Most High your dwelling--
even
the LORD, who is my refuge--

then no harm will befall you,
no
disaster will come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you
to
guard you in all your ways;

they will lift you up in their hands,
so
that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you

"Because he loves me,"
says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call
upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him

A
song of ascents.
1 I
lift up my eyes to the hills--
where
does my help come from?
2 My
help comes from the LORD,
the
Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He
will not let your foot slip--
he
who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed,
he who watches over Israel
will
neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The
LORD watches over you--
the
LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the
sun will not harm you by day,
nor
the moon by night.
7 The
LORD will keep you from all harm--
he
will watch over your life;
8 the
LORD will watch over your coming and going
both

PROVERBS: 1
1 1 The
proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for
attaining wisdom and discipline;
for
understanding words of insight;
3 for
acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing
what is right and just and fair;
4 for
giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge
and discretion to the young--
5 let
the wise listen and add to their learning,
and
let the discerning get guidance--
6 for
understanding proverbs and parables,
the
sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The
fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but
foolsA despise wisdom and discipline.
8 Listen,
my son, to your father's instruction
and
do not forsake your mother's teaching.
9 They
will be a garland to grace your head
and
a chain to adorn your neck.
10
My son, if sinners entice you,
do
not give in to them.
11
If they say, "Come along with us;
let's
lie in wait for someone's blood,
let's
waylay some harmless soul;
12
let's swallow them alive, like the grave, B

we will get all sorts of valuable things

fill our houses with plunder;

How useless to spread a net

These men lie in wait for their own blood;

waylay only themselves!

Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it
takes away the lives of those who get it.

Wisdom calls aloud in the street,
she
raises her voice in the public squares;
21
at the head of the noisy streets C she
cries out,
in
the gateways of the city she makes her speech:

"How long will you simple ones D love
your simple ways?
How
long will mockers delight in mockery
and
fools hate knowledge?
23
If you had responded to my rebuke,
I
would have poured out my heart to you
and
made my thoughts known to you.
24
But since you rejected me when I called
and
no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,

5since you ignored all my advice
and
would not accept my rebuke,
26
I in turn will laugh at your disaster; [10]
I
will mock when calamity overtakes you--
27
when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when
disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when
distress and trouble overwhelm you.

"Then they will call
to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me.
29 Since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the LORD,
30 since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm." [11]
OLD TESTAMENT: JOB 1:1 - 3:26
1 1 In
the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and
upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three
daughters, 3 and
he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen
and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the
greatest man among all the people of the East.
4 His sons used to take turns holding
feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and
drink with them. 5
When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have
them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for
each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in
their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.
6 One day the angels A came to present themselves before the LORD,
and Satan B also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan,
"Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD,
"From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."
8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth
like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."
9 "Does Job fear God for
nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and
his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so
that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But stretch
out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to
your face."
12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on
the man himself do not lay a finger."
Then Satan went out from
the presence of the LORD.
13 One day when Job's sons and daughters
were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, 14 a messenger
came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing
nearby, 15 and
the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword,
and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
16 While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up
the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell
you!"
17 While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and
swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the
sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
18 While he was still speaking, yet
another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting
and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in
from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them
and they [12]
are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe
and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:
"Naked I came from my
mother's womb,
and naked I will depart. C
The LORD gave and the LORD
has taken away;
may the name of the LORD
be praised."
22 In all this, Job did not sin by
charging God with wrongdoing.
2 1 On
another day the angels A came to present
themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself
before him. 2 And
the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come
from?"
Satan answered the LORD,
"From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."
3 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth
like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And
he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him
without any reason."
4 "Skin for skin!" Satan
replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But stretch
out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to
your face."
6 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his
life."
7 So Satan went out from the presence of
the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the
top of his head. 8
Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as
he sat among the ashes.
9 His wife said to him, "Are you
still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"
10 He replied, "You are talking like
a foolish B woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not
trouble?"
In all this, Job did not
sin in what he said. [13]
11 When Job's three friends, Eliphaz the
Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the
troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together
by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.
12 When they
saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep
aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads.
13 Then they sat on the ground with him
for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw
how great his suffering was.
3 1 After
this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 He said:
3 "May the day of my birth perish,
and the night it was said,
`A boy is born!'
4 That day--may it turn to darkness;
may God above not care
about it;
may no light shine upon
it.
5 May darkness and deep shadow A claim it once more;
may a cloud settle over
it;
may blackness overwhelm
its light.
6 That night--may thick darkness seize
it;
may it not be included
among the days of the year
nor be entered in any of
the months.
7 May that night be barren;
may no shout of joy be
heard in it.
8 May those who curse days B curse that day,
those who are ready to
rouse Leviathan.
9 May its morning stars become dark;
may it wait for daylight
in vain [14]
and not see the first rays
of dawn,
10 for it did not shut the doors of the
womb on me
to hide trouble from my
eyes.
11 "Why did I not perish at birth,
and die as I came from the
womb?
12 Why were there knees to receive me
and breasts that I might
be nursed?
13 For now I would be lying down in
peace;
I would be asleep and at
rest
14 with kings and counselors of the earth,
who built for themselves
places now lying in ruins,
15 with rulers who had gold,
who filled their houses
with silver.
16 Or why was I not hidden in the ground
like a stillborn child,
like an infant who never
saw the light of day?
17 There the wicked cease from turmoil,
and there the weary are at
rest.
18 Captives also enjoy their ease;
they no longer hear the
slave driver's shout.
19 The small and the great are there,
and the slave is freed
from his master.
20 "Why is light given to those in
misery,
and life to the bitter of
soul,
21 to those who long for death that does
not come, [15]
who search for it more
than for hidden treasure,
22 who are filled with gladness
and rejoice when they
reach the grave?
23 Why is life given to a man
whose way is hidden,
whom God has hedged in?
24 For sighing comes to me instead of
food;
my groans pour out like
water.
25 What I feared has come upon me;
what I dreaded has
happened to me.
26 I have no peace, no quietness;
I have no rest, but only
turmoil." [16]
NEW TESTAMENT: 1 CORINTHIANS 14:1 - 17
14 1 Follow
the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of
prophecy. 2 For
anyone who speaks in a tongue A does not
speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries
with his spirit. B 3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for
their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies
himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5 I would like every one of you to speak
in tongues, C but I would rather have you prophesy. He who
prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, D unless he interprets, so that the church may
be edified.
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and
speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some
revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
7 Even in the case of lifeless things
that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is
being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?
8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a
clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak
intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying?
You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of
languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I
do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker,
and he is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have
spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a
tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14 For if I pray in a tongue,
my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15 So what shall I do? I will pray with
my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I
will also sing with my mind. 16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how
can one who finds himself among those who do not understand E say "Amen" to your thanksgiving,
since he does not know what you are saying? 17 You may be giving thanks well
enough, but the other man is not edified. [17]
