ForA
the director of music. To the tune of "The Death of the Son."
A psalm of David.
1
I
will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
I
will tell of all your wonders.
2
I
will be glad and rejoice in you;
I
will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3
My
enemies turn back;
they
stumble and perish before you.
4
For
you have upheld my right and my cause;
you
have sat on your throne, judging righteously.
5
You
have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked;
you
have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
6
Endless
ruin has overtaken the enemy,
you
have uprooted their cities;
even
the memory of them has perished.
7
The
LORD reigns forever;
he
has established his throne for judgment.
8
He
will judge the world in righteousness;
he
will govern the peoples with justice.
9
The
LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a
stronghold in times of trouble.
10
Those
who know your name will trust in you,
for
you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.
11
Sing
praises to the LORD, enthroned in Zion;
proclaim
among the nations what he has done.
12
For
he who avenges blood remembers;
he
does not ignore the cry of the afflicted. 1
13
O
LORD, see how my enemies persecute me!
Have
mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,
14
that
I may declare your praises
in
the gates of the Daughter of Zion
and
there rejoice in your salvation.
15
The
nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their
feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
16
The
LORD is known by his justice;
the
wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.
Higgaion.

17
The
wicked return to the grave, C
all
the nations that forget God.
18
But
the needy will not always be forgotten,
nor
the hope of the afflicted ever perish.
19
Arise,
O LORD, let not man triumph;
let
the nations be judged in your presence.
20
Strike
them with terror, O LORD;
let
the nations know they are but men.

PSALMS:
39
For
the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
1
I
said, "I will watch my ways
and
keep my tongue from sin;
I
will put a muzzle on my mouth
as
long as the wicked are in my presence."
2
But
when I was silent and still,
not
even saying anything good,
my
anguish increased.
3
My
heart grew hot within me,
and
as I meditated, the fire burned;
then
I spoke with my tongue:
4
"Show
me, O LORD, my life's end
and
the number of my days;
let
me know how fleeting is my life.
5
You
have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the
span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each
man's life is but a breath.
Selah
6
Man
is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
He
bustles about, but only in vain;
he
heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.
7
"But
now, Lord, what do I look for?
My
hope is in you.
8
Save
me from all my transgressions;
do
not make me the scorn of fools.
9
I
was silent; I would not open my mouth, 3
for
you are the one who has done this.
10
Remove
your scourge from me;
I
am overcome by the blow of your hand.
11
You
rebuke and discipline men for their sin;
you
consume their wealth like a moth--
each
man is but a breath.
Selah
12
"Hear
my prayer, O LORD,
listen
to my cry for help;
be
not deaf to my weeping.
For
I dwell with you as an alien,
a
stranger, as all my fathers were.
13
Look
away from me, that I may rejoice again
before
I depart and am no more." 4
PSALMS:
69
For
the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of David.
1
Save
me, O God,
for
the waters have come up to my neck.
2
I
sink in the miry depths,
where
there is no foothold.
I
have come into the deep waters;
the
floods engulf me.
3
I
am worn out calling for help;
my
throat is parched.
My
eyes fail,
looking
for my God.
4
Those
who hate me without reason
outnumber
the hairs of my head;
many
are my enemies without cause,
those
who seek to destroy me.
I
am forced to restore
what
I did not steal.
5
You
know my folly, O God;
my
guilt is not hidden from you.
6
May
those who hope in you
not
be disgraced because of me,
O
Lord, the LORD Almighty;
may
those who seek you
not
be put to shame because of me,
O
God of Israel.
7
For
I endure scorn for your sake,
and
shame covers my face.
8
I
am a stranger to my brothers, 5
an
alien to my own mother's sons;
9
for
zeal for your house consumes me,
and
the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
10
When
I weep and fast,
I
must endure scorn;
11
when
I put on sackcloth,
people
make sport of me.
12
Those
who sit at the gate mock me,
and
I am the song of the drunkards.
13
But
I pray to you, O LORD,
in
the time of your favor;
in
your great love, O God,
answer
me with your sure salvation.
14
Rescue
me from the mire,
do
not let me sink;
deliver
me from those who hate me,
from
the deep waters.
15
Do
not let the floodwaters engulf me
or
the depths swallow me up
or
the pit close its mouth over me.
16
Answer
me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love;
in
your great mercy turn to me.
17
Do
not hide your face from your servant;
answer
me quickly, for I am in trouble.
18
Come
near and rescue me;
redeem
me because of my foes.
19
You
know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;
all
my enemies are before you.
20
Scorn
has broken my heart 6
and
has left me helpless;
I
looked for sympathy, but there was none,
for
comforters, but I found none.
21
They
put gall in my food
and
gave me vinegar for my thirst.
22
May
the table set before them become a snare;
may
it become retribution and A
a trap.
23
May
their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and
their backs be bent forever.
24
Pour
out your wrath on them;
let
your fierce anger overtake them.
25
May
their place be deserted;
let
there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26
For
they persecute those you wound
and
talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27
Charge
them with crime upon crime;
do
not let them share in your salvation.
28
May
they be blotted out of the book of life
and
not be listed with the righteous.
29
I
am in pain and distress;
may
your salvation, O God, protect me.
30
I
will praise God's name in song
and
glorify him with thanksgiving.
31
This
will please the LORD more than an ox,
more
than a bull with its horns and hoofs.
32
The
poor will see and be glad--
you
who seek God, may your hearts live!
33
The
LORD hears the needy
and
does not despise his captive people. 7
34
Let
heaven and earth praise him,
the
seas and all that move in them,
35
for
God will save Zion
and
rebuild the cities of Judah.
Then
people will settle there and possess it;
36
the
children of his servants will inherit it,
and
those who love his name will dwell there. 8
PSALMS:

1
The
LORD reigns,
let
the nations tremble;
he
sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let
the earth shake.
2
Great
is the LORD in Zion;
he
is exalted over all the nations.
3
Let
them praise your great and awesome name--
he
is holy.
4
The
King is mighty, he loves justice--
you
have established equity;
in
Jacob you have done
what
is just and right.
5
Exalt
the LORD our God
and
worship at his footstool;
he
is holy.
6
Moses
and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel
was among those who called on his name;
they
called on the LORD
and
he answered them.
7
He
spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
they
kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.
8
O
LORD our God,
you
answered them;
you
were to Israel A
a forgiving God,
though
you punished their misdeeds. B
9
Exalt
the LORD our God
and
worship at his holy mountain,
for
the LORD our God is holy. 9

A
song of ascents.
1
They
have greatly oppressed me from my youth--
let
Israel say--
2
they
have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
but
they have not gained the victory over me.
3
Plowmen
have plowed my back
and
made their furrows long.
4
But
the LORD is righteous;
he
has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.
5
May
all who hate Zion
be
turned back in shame.
6
May
they be like grass on the roof,
which
withers before it can grow;
7
with
it the reaper cannot fill his hands,
nor
the one who gathers fill his arms.
8
May
those who pass by not say,
"The
blessing of the LORD be upon you;
we
bless you in the name of the LORD." 10

OLD
TESTAMENT:
EXODUS 8:1 - 9:35
8
1
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Go
to Pharaoh and say to him, `This is what the LORD says: Let my people
go, so that they may worship me. 2
If you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with
frogs. 3
The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and
your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and
on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. 4
The frogs will go up on you and your people and all your officials.'
"
5
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Tell
Aaron, `Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and
canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'
"
6
So
Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs
came up and covered the land. 7
But
the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also
made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
8
Pharaoh
summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD to take the
frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to
offer sacrifices to the LORD."
9
Moses
said to Pharaoh, "I leave to you the honor of setting the time
for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you
and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain
in the Nile."
10
"Tomorrow,"
Pharaoh said.
Moses
replied, "It will be as you say, so that you may know there is
no one like the LORD our God. 11
The
frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people;
they will remain only in the Nile."
12
After
Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the LORD about the
frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. 13
And
the LORD did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the
courtyards and in the fields. 14
They
were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15
But
when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and
would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.
16
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Tell
Aaron, `Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,'
and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats."
17
They
did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and
struck the dust of the ground, gnats came upon men and animals. All
the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18
But
when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they
could not. And the gnats were on men and animals.
19
The
magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But
Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD
had said.
20
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Get
up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the water
and say to him, `This is what the 13LORD
says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 21
If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you
and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses
of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground where
they are.
22"`
But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen,
where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you
will know that I, the LORD, am in this land. 23
I will make a distinction A
between my people and your people. This miraculous sign will occur
tomorrow.' "
24
And
the LORD did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh's palace
and into the houses of his officials, and throughout Egypt the land
was ruined by the flies.
25
Then
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to
your God here in the land."
26
But
Moses said, "That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer
the LORD our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we
offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not
stone us? 27
We
must take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to
the LORD our God, as he commands us."
28
Pharaoh
said, "I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the LORD your
God in the desert, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me."
29
Moses
answered, "As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the LORD, and
tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his
people. Only be sure that Pharaoh does not act deceitfully again by
not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD."
30
Then
Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, 31and
the LORD did what Moses asked: The flies left Pharaoh and his
officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32
But
this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the
people go.
9
1
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Go
to Pharaoh and say to him, `This is what the LORD, the God of the
Hebrews, says: "Let my people go, so that they may worship me."
2
If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, 3
the hand of the LORD will bring a terrible plague on your livestock
in the field--on your horses and donkeys and camels and on your
cattle and sheep and goats. 4
But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel
and that of Egypt, so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will
die.'"
5
The
LORD set a time and said, "Tomorrow
the LORD will do this in the land."
6
And
the next day the LORD did it: All the livestock of the 14
Egyptians died, but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died.
7
Pharaoh
sent men to investigate and found that not even one of the animals of
the Israelites had died. Yet his heart was unyielding and he would
not let the people go.
8
Then
the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take
handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air
in the presence of Pharaoh. 9
It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering
boils will break out on men and animals throughout the land."
10
So
they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed
it into the air, and festering boils broke out on men and animals. 11
The
magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were
on them and on all the Egyptians. 12
But
the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart and he would not listen to Moses
and Aaron, just as the LORD had said to Moses.
13
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Get
up early in the morning, confront Pharaoh and say to him, `This is
what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so
that they may worship me, 14
or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and
against your officials and your people, so you may know that there is
no one like me in all the earth. 15
For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your
people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16
But I have raised you up A
for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my
name might be proclaimed in all the earth. 17
You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. 18
Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm that
has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now. 19
Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in
the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every
man and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the
field, and they will die.'
"
20
Those
officials of Pharaoh who feared the word of the LORD hurried to bring
their slaves and their livestock inside. 21
But
those who ignored the word of the LORD left their slaves and
livestock in the field.
22
Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch
out your hand toward the sky so that hail will fall all over
Egypt--on men and animals and on everything growing in the fields of
Egypt."
23
When
Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the LORD sent thunder
and hail, and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the LORD
rained hail on the land of Egypt; 24
hail
fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in
all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. 25
Throughout
Egypt hail struck everything in the fields--both men and animals; it
beat down everything growing in the fields and stripped every tree.
26
The
only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen, where the
Israelites were.
27
Then
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. "This time I have sinned,"
he said to them. "The LORD is in the right, and I and my people
are in the wrong. 28
Pray
to the LORD, for we have had enough thunder and hail. I will let you
go; you don't have to stay any longer."
29
Moses
replied, "When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my
hands in prayer to the LORD. The thunder will stop and there will be
no more hail, so you may know that the earth is the LORD's. 30
But
I know that you and your officials still do not fear the LORD God."
15
31
(The
flax and barley were destroyed, since the barley had headed and the
flax was in bloom. 32
The
wheat and spelt, however, were not destroyed, because they ripen
later.)
33
Then
Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. He spread out his hands
toward the LORD; the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain no longer
poured down on the land.
34
When
Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he sinned
again: He and his officials hardened their hearts. 35
So
Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not let the Israelites go, just
as the LORD had said through Moses. 16
NEW
TESTAMENT:
MATTHEW 19:13 - 30
13
Then
little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on
them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought
them.
14
Jesus
said, "Let
the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the
kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
15
When
he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
16
Now
a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must
I do to get eternal life?"
17
"Why
do you ask me about what is good?"
Jesus replied. "There
is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the
commandments."
18
"Which
ones?" the man inquired.
Jesus
replied, " `Do
not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false
testimony, 19
honor your father and mother,'
D
and `love your neighbor as yourself.'
E"
20
"All
these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still
lack?"
21
Jesus
answered, "If
you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
22
When
the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great
wealth.
23
Then
Jesus said to his disciples, "I
tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of
heaven. 24
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
25
When
the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked,
"Who then can be saved?"
26
Jesus
looked at them and said, "With
man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
27
Peter
answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then
will there be for us?"
28
Jesus
said to them, "I
tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man
sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit
on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or
mother F
or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as
much and will inherit eternal life. 30
But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be
first. 17

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
