¹O LORD, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory

above the heavens.

²From the lips of children and infants

you have ordained praise ^B

because of your enemies,

to silence the foe and the avenger.

³When I consider your heavens,

the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars,

which you have set in place,

⁴what is man that you are mindful of him,

the son of man that you care for him?

⁵You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings ^C

and crowned him with glory and honor.

⁶You made him ruler over the works of your hands;

you put everything under his feet:

⁷all flocks and herds,

and the beasts of the field,

⁸the birds of the air,

and the fish of the sea,

all that swim the paths of the seas. ¹

⁹O LORD, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth! ²

PSALMS: 38

A psalm of David. A petition.

¹O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger

or discipline me in your wrath.

²For your arrows have pierced me,

and your hand has come down upon me.

³Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;

my bones have no soundness because of my sin.

⁴My guilt has overwhelmed me

like a burden too heavy to bear.

⁵My wounds fester and are loathsome

because of my sinful folly.

⁶I am bowed down and brought very low;

all day long I go about mourning.

⁷My back is filled with searing pain;

there is no health in my body.

⁸I am feeble and utterly crushed;

I groan in anguish of heart.

⁹All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;

my sighing is not hidden from you.

¹⁰My heart pounds, my strength fails me;

even the light has gone from my eyes.

¹¹My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;

my neighbors stay far away.

¹²Those who seek my life set their traps,

those who would harm me talk of my ruin;

all day long they plot deception. ³

¹³I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear,

like a mute, who cannot open his mouth;

¹⁴I have become like a man who does not hear,

whose mouth can offer no reply.

¹⁵I wait for you, O LORD;

you will answer, O Lord my God.

¹⁶For I said, "Do not let them gloat

or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."

¹⁷For I am about to fall,

and my pain is ever with me.

¹⁸I confess my iniquity;

I am troubled by my sin.

¹⁹Many are those who are my vigorous enemies;

those who hate me without reason are numerous.

²⁰Those who repay my good with evil

slander me when I pursue what is good.

²¹O LORD, do not forsake me;

be not far from me, O my God.

²²Come quickly to help me,

PSALMS: 68

¹May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;

may his foes flee before him.

²As smoke is blown away by the wind,

may you blow them away;

as wax melts before the fire,

may the wicked perish before God.

³But may the righteous be glad

and rejoice before God;

may they be happy and joyful.

⁴Sing to God, sing praise to his name,

extol him who rides on the clouds ^A--

his name is the LORD--

and rejoice before him.

⁵A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,

is God in his holy dwelling.

⁶God sets the lonely in families, ^B

he leads forth the prisoners with singing;

but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

⁷When you went out before your people, O God,

when you marched through the wasteland,

Selah

⁸the earth shook,

the heavens poured down rain,

before God, the One of Sinai,

before God, the God of Israel.

⁹You gave abundant showers, O God;

you refreshed your weary inheritance. ⁵

¹⁰Your people settled in it,

and from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor.

¹¹The Lord announced the word,

and great was the company of those who proclaimed it:

¹²"Kings and armies flee in haste;

in the camps men divide the plunder.

Even while you sleep among the campfires, ^C

the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,

its feathers with shining gold."

¹⁴When the Almighty ^D scattered the kings in the land,

it was like snow fallen on Zalmon.

¹⁵The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains;

rugged are the mountains of Bashan.

¹⁶Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains,

at the mountain where God chooses to reign,

where the LORD himself will dwell forever?

¹⁷The chariots of God are tens of thousands

and thousands of thousands;

the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.

¹⁸When you ascended on high,

you led captives in your train;

you received gifts from men,

even from ^E the rebellious--

that you, ^F O LORD God, might dwell there.

¹⁹Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,

who daily bears our burdens.

²⁰Our God is a God who saves;

from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death. ⁶

²¹Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies,

the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.

²²The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan;

I will bring them from the depths of the sea,

²³ that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes,

while the tongues of your dogs have their share."

²⁴Your procession has come into view, O God,

the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.

²⁵In front are the singers, after them the musicians;

with them are the maidens playing tambourines.

²⁶Praise God in the great congregation;

praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel.

²⁷There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them,

there the great throng of Judah's princes,

and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.

²⁸Summon your power, O God ^G;

show us your strength, O God, as you have done before.

²⁹Because of your temple at Jerusalem

kings will bring you gifts.

³⁰Rebuke the beast among the reeds,

the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations.

Humbled, may it bring bars of silver.

Scatter the nations who delight in war.

³¹Envoys will come from Egypt;

Cush ^H will submit herself to God.

³²Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth,

sing praise to the Lord,

³³to him who rides the ancient skies above,

who thunders with mighty voice.

³⁴Proclaim the power of God,

whose majesty is over Israel,

whose power is in the skies.

³⁵You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;

the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.

PSALMS: 98

A psalm.

¹Sing to the LORD a new song,

for he has done marvelous things;

his right hand and his holy arm

have worked salvation for him.

²The LORD has made his salvation known

and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

³He has remembered his love

and his faithfulness to the house of Israel;

all the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

⁴Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,

burst into jubilant song with music;

⁵make music to the LORD with the harp,

with the harp and the sound of singing,

⁶with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn--

shout for joy before the LORD, the King.

⁷Let the sea resound, and everything in it,

the world, and all who live in it.

⁸Let the rivers clap their hands,

let the mountains sing together for joy;

⁹let them sing before the LORD,

for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

and the peoples with equity. ⁹

PSALMS: 128

A song of ascents.

¹Blessed are all who fear the LORD,

who walk in his ways.

²You will eat the fruit of your labor;

blessings and prosperity will be yours.

³Your wife will be like a fruitful vine

within your house;

your sons will be like olive shoots

around your table.

⁴Thus is the man blessed

who fears the LORD.

⁵May the LORD bless you from Zion

all the days of your life;

may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,

⁶and may you live to see your children's children.

Peace be upon Israel. ¹⁰

PROVERBS: 8

8 ¹ Does not wisdom call out?

Does not understanding raise her voice?

²On the heights along the way,

where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

³beside the gates leading into the city,

at the entrances, she cries aloud:

⁴"To you, O men, I call out;

I raise my voice to all mankind.

⁵You who are simple, gain prudence;

you who are foolish, gain understanding.

⁶Listen, for I have worthy things to say;

I open my lips to speak what is right.

⁷My mouth speaks what is true,

for my lips detest wickedness.

⁸All the words of my mouth are just;

none of them is crooked or perverse.

⁹To the discerning all of them are right;

they are faultless to those who have knowledge.

¹⁰Choose my instruction instead of silver,

knowledge rather than choice gold,

¹¹for wisdom is more precious than rubies,

and nothing you desire can compare with her.

¹²"I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;

I possess knowledge and discretion.

¹³To fear the LORD is to hate evil;

I hate pride and arrogance,

evil behavior and perverse speech.

¹⁴Counsel and sound judgment are mine;

I have understanding and power.

¹⁵By me kings reign

and rulers make laws that are just;

¹⁶by me princes govern, ¹¹

and all nobles who rule on earth. ^A

¹⁷I love those who love me,

and those who seek me find me.

¹⁸With me are riches and honor,

enduring wealth and prosperity.

¹⁹My fruit is better than fine gold;

what I yield surpasses choice silver.

²⁰I walk in the way of righteousness,

along the paths of justice,

²¹bestowing wealth on those who love me

and making their treasuries full.

²²"The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, ^BC

before his deeds of old;

²³I was appointed ^D from eternity,

from the beginning, before the world began.

²⁴When there were no oceans, I was given birth,

when there were no springs abounding with water;

²⁵before the mountains were settled in place,

before the hills, I wa/s given birth,

²⁶before he made the earth or its fields

or any of the dust of the world.

²⁷I was there when he set the heavens in place,

when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,

²⁸when he established the clouds above

and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,

²⁹when he gave the sea its boundary

so the waters would not overstep his command,

and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

³⁰ Then I was the craftsman at his side.

I was filled with delight day after day,

rejoicing always in his presence,

³¹rejoicing in his whole world

and delighting in mankind. ¹²

³²"Now then, my sons, listen to me;

blessed are those who keep my ways.

³³Listen to my instruction and be wise;

do not ignore it.

³⁴Blessed is the man who listens to me,

watching daily at my doors,

waiting at my doorway.

³⁵For whoever finds me finds life

and receives favor from the LORD.

³⁶But whoever fails to find me harms himself;

all who hate me love death." ¹³

OLD TESTAMENT: JUDGES 11:1 - 12:15

11 ¹Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. ²Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. "You are not going to get any inheritance in our family," they said, "because you are the son of another woman." ³So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him.

⁴Some time later, when the Ammonites made war on Israel, ⁵the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. ⁶"Come," they said, "be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites."

⁷Jephthah said to them, "Didn't you hate me and drive me from my father's house? Why do you come to me now, when you're in trouble?"

⁸The elders of Gilead said to him, "Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be our head over all who live in Gilead."

⁹Jephthah answered, "Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me--will I really be your head?"

¹⁰The elders of Gilead replied, "The LORD is our witness; we will certainly do as you say." ¹¹So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.

¹²Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the ¹⁴ question: "What do you have against us that you have attacked our country?"

¹³The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah's messengers, "When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably."

¹⁴Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, ¹⁵saying:

"This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites. ¹⁶But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the desert to the Red Sea ^A and on to Kadesh. ¹⁷Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, `Give us permission to go through your country,' but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

¹⁸"Next they traveled through the desert, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.

¹⁹"Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, `Let us pass through your country to our own place.' ²⁰Sihon, however, did not trust Israel ^B to pass through his territory. He mustered all his men and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.

²¹"Then the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his men into Israel's hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the ¹⁵ land of the Amorites who lived in that country, ²²capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.

²³"Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? ²⁴Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the LORD our God has given us, we will possess. ²⁵Are you better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them? ²⁶For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn't you retake them during that time? ²⁷I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the LORD, the Judge, ^C decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites."

²⁸The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.

²⁹Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

³⁰And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD: "If you give the Ammonites into my hands,

³¹whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."

³²Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into his hands. ³³He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon. ¹⁶ ³⁴When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁵When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, "Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the LORD that I cannot break."

³⁶"My father," she replied, "you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me just as you promised, now that the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.

³⁷But grant me this one request," she said. "Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry."

³⁸"You may go," he said. And he let her go for two months. She and the girls went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. ³⁹After the two months, she returned to her father and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.

From this comes the Israelite custom ⁴⁰that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

12 ¹The men of Ephraim called out their forces, crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We're going to burn down your house over your head." ¹⁷ ²Jephthah answered, "I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn't save me out of their hands. ³When I saw that you wouldn't help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?"

⁴Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, "You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh." ⁵The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead asked him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he replied, "No," ⁶they said, "All right, say `Shibboleth.' " If he said, "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.

⁷Jephthah led ^A Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in a town in Gilead.

⁸After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel. ⁹He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years. ¹⁰Then Ibzan died, and was buried in Bethlehem.

¹¹After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years. ¹²Then Elon died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

¹³After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel. ¹⁴He ¹⁸ had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel eight years. ¹⁵Then Abdon son of Hillel died, and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites. ¹⁹

NEW TESTAMENT: JOHN 1:1 - 28

1 ^1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

²He was with God in the beginning.

³Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

⁴In him was life, and that life was the light of men. ⁵The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood ^A it.

⁶There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. ⁷He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. ⁸He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. ⁹The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. ^B

¹⁰He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. ¹¹He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

¹²Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—¹³children born not of natural descent, ^C nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

¹⁴The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, ^D who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

¹⁵John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'" ¹⁶From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. ¹⁷For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ²⁰ ¹⁸No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, ^EF who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

¹⁹Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. ²⁰He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. ^G"

²¹They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"

He said, "I am not."

"Are you the Prophet?"

He answered, "No."

²²Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"

²³John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, `Make straight the way for the Lord.'" ^H

²⁴Now some Pharisees who had been sent ²⁵questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

²⁶"I baptize with ^I water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.

²⁷He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."

²⁸This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²¹

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." H
