A
shiggaion
A
of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, a Benjamite.
1
O
LORD my God, I take refuge in you;
save
and deliver me from all who pursue me,
2
or
they will tear me like a lion
and
rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.
3
O
LORD my God, if I have done this
and
there is guilt on my hands--
4
if
I have done evil to him who is at peace with me
or
without cause have robbed my foe--
5
then
let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
let
him trample my life to the ground
and
make me sleep in the dust.
Selah
6
Arise,
O LORD, in your anger;
rise
up against the rage of my enemies.
Awake,
my God; decree justice.
7
Let
the assembled peoples gather around you.
Rule
over them from on high;
8
let
the LORD judge the peoples.
Judge
me, O LORD, according to my righteousness,
according
to my integrity, O Most High.
9
O
righteous God,
who
searches minds and hearts,
bring
to an end the violence of the wicked
and
make the righteous secure. 1
10
My
shield B
is God Most High,
who
saves the upright in heart.
11
God
is a righteous judge,
a
God who expresses his wrath every day.
12
If
he does not relent,
he
C
will sharpen his sword;
he
will bend and string his bow.
13
He
has prepared his deadly weapons;
he
makes ready his flaming arrows.
14
He
who is pregnant with evil
and
conceives trouble gives birth to disillusionment.
15
He
who digs a hole and scoops it out
falls
into the pit he has made.
16
The
trouble he causes recoils on himself;
his
violence comes down on his own head.
17
I
will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness
and
will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. 2
PSALMS:
37
Of
David.
1
Do
A
not fret because of evil men
or
be envious of those who do wrong;
2
for
like the grass they will soon wither,
like
green plants they will soon die away.
3
Trust
in the LORD and do good;
dwell
in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4
Delight
yourself in the LORD
and
he will give you the desires of your heart.
5
Commit
your way to the LORD;
trust
in him and he will do this:
6
He
will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the
justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
7
Be
still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do
not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when
they carry out their wicked schemes.
8
Refrain
from anger and turn from wrath;
do
not fret--it leads only to evil.
9
For
evil men will be cut off,
but
those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.
10
A
little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though
you look for them, they will not be found.
11
But
the meek will inherit the land
and
enjoy great peace. 3
12
The
wicked plot against the righteous
and
gnash their teeth at them;
13
but
the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for
he knows their day is coming.
14
The
wicked draw the sword
and
bend the bow
to
bring down the poor and needy,
to
slay those whose ways are upright.
15
But
their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and
their bows will be broken.
16
Better
the little that the righteous have
than
the wealth of many wicked;
17
for
the power of the wicked will be broken,
but
the LORD upholds the righteous.
18
The
days of the blameless are known to the LORD,
and
their inheritance will endure forever.
19
In
times of disaster they will not wither;
in
days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20
But
the wicked will perish:
The
LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,
they
will vanish--vanish like smoke.
21
The
wicked borrow and do not repay,
but
the righteous give generously;
22
those
the LORD blesses will inherit the land,
but
those he curses will be cut off. 4
23
If
the LORD delights in a man's way,
he
makes his steps firm;
24
though
he stumble, he will not fall,
for
the LORD upholds him with his hand.
25
I
was young and now I am old,
yet
I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or
their children begging bread.
26
They
are always generous and lend freely;
their
children will be blessed.
27
Turn
from evil and do good;
then
you will dwell in the land forever.
28
For
the LORD loves the just
and
will not forsake his faithful ones.
They
will be protected forever,
but
the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;
29
the
righteous will inherit the land
and
dwell in it forever.
30
The
mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and
his tongue speaks what is just.
31
The
law of his God is in his heart;
his
feet do not slip.
32
The
wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
seeking
their very lives;
33
but
the LORD will not leave them in their power
or
let them be condemned when brought to trial. 5
34
Wait
for the LORD
and
keep his way.
He
will exalt you to inherit the land;
when
the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
35
I
have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing
like a green tree in its native soil,
36
but
he soon passed away and was no more;
though
I looked for him, he could not be found.
37
Consider
the blameless, observe the upright;
there
is a future B
for the man of peace.
38
But
all sinners will be destroyed;
the
future C
of the wicked will be cut off.
39
The
salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
he
is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40
The
LORD helps them and delivers them;
he
delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because
they take refuge in him. 6

For
the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.
1
May
God be gracious to us and bless us
and
make his face shine upon us,
Selah
2
that
your ways may be known on earth,
your
salvation among all nations.
3
May
the peoples praise you, O God;
may
all the peoples praise you.
4
May
the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for
you rule the peoples justly
and
guide the nations of the earth.
Selah
5
May
the peoples praise you, O God;
may
all the peoples praise you.
6
Then
the land will yield its harvest,
and
God, our God, will bless us.
7
God
will bless us,
and
all the ends of the earth will fear him. 7
PSALMS:
97
1
The
LORD reigns, let the earth be glad;
let
the distant shores rejoice.
2
Clouds
and thick darkness surround him;
righteousness
and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3
Fire
goes before him
and
consumes his foes on every side.
4
His
lightning lights up the world;
the
earth sees and trembles.
5
The
mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before
the Lord of all the earth.
6
The
heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and
all the peoples see his glory.
7
All
who worship images are put to shame,
those
who boast in idols--
worship
him, all you gods!
8
Zion
hears and rejoices
and
the villages of Judah are glad
because
of your judgments, O LORD.
9
For
you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth;
you
are exalted far above all gods.
10
Let
those who love the LORD hate evil,
for
he guards the lives of his faithful ones
and
delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11
Light
is shed upon the righteous
and
joy on the upright in heart.
12
Rejoice
in the LORD, you who are righteous,
and
praise his holy name. 8

A
song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1
Unless
the LORD builds the house,
its
builders labor in vain.
Unless
the LORD watches over the city,
the
watchmen stand guard in vain.
2
In
vain you rise early
and
stay up late,
toiling
for food to eat--
for
he grants sleep to A
those he loves.
3
Sons
are a heritage from the LORD,
children
a reward from him.
4
Like
arrows in the hands of a warrior
are
sons born in one's youth.
5
Blessed
is the man
whose
quiver is full of them.
They
will not be put to shame
when
they contend with their enemies in the gate. 9
PROVERBS:

7
1
My son, keep my words
and
store up my commands within you.
2
Keep
my commands and you will live;
guard
my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3
Bind
them on your fingers;
write
them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Say
to wisdom, "You
are my sister,"
and
call understanding your kinsman;
5
they
will keep you from the adulteress,
from
the wayward wife with her seductive words.
6
At
the window of my house
I
looked out through the lattice.
7
I
saw among the simple,
I
noticed among the young men,
a
youth who lacked judgment.
8
He
was going down the street near her corner,
walking
along in the direction of her house
9
at
twilight, as the day was fading,
as
the dark of night set in.
10
Then
out came a woman to meet him,
dressed
like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11
(She
is loud and defiant,
her
feet never stay at home;
12
now
in the street, now in the squares,
at
every corner she lurks.)
13
She
took hold of him and kissed him
and
with a brazen face she said:
14
"I
have fellowship offerings A
at home;
today
I fulfilled my vows.
15
So
I came out to meet you; 10
I
looked for you and have found you!
16
I
have covered my bed
with
colored linens from Egypt.
17
I
have perfumed my bed
with
myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18
Come,
let's drink deep of love till morning;
let's
enjoy ourselves with love!
19
My
husband is not at home;
he
has gone on a long journey.
20
He
took his purse filled with money
and
will not be home till full moon."
21
With
persuasive words she led him astray;
she
seduced him with her smooth talk.
22
All
at once he followed her
like
an ox going to the slaughter,
like
a deer B
stepping into a noose C
23
till an arrow pierces his liver,
like
a bird darting into a snare,
little
knowing it will cost him his life.
24
Now
then, my sons, listen to me;
pay
attention to what I say.
25
Do
not let your heart turn to her ways
or
stray into her paths.
26
Many
are the victims she has brought down;
her
slain are a mighty throng.
27
Her
house is a highway to the grave, D
leading
down to the chambers of death. 11
OLD
TESTAMENT:
DANIEL 5:1 - 31
5
1
King
Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and
drank wine with them. 2
While
Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold
and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father A
had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his
nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. 3
So
they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple
of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his
concubines drank from them. 4
As
they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of
bronze, iron, wood and stone.
5
Suddenly
the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the
wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the
hand as it wrote. 6
His
face turned pale and he was so frightened that his knees knocked
together and his legs gave way.
7
The
king called out for the enchanters, astrologers B
and diviners to be brought and said to these wise men of Babylon,
"Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be
clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and
he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom."
8
Then
all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing
or tell the king what it meant. 9
So
King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew more
pale. His nobles were baffled.
10
The
queen, C
hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet
hall. "O king, live forever!" she said. "Don't be
alarmed! Don't look so pale! 11
There
is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him.
In the time of your father he was found to have insight and
intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar
your father--your father the king, I say--appointed him chief of the
magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners. 12
This
man Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar, was found to have a
keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to
interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call
for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means."
13
So
Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, "Are
you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?
14
I
have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have
insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.
15
The
wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing
and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it. 16
Now
I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve
difficult problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what it
means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed
around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the
kingdom."
17
Then
Daniel answered the king, "You may keep your gifts for yourself
and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the
writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18
"O
king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty
and greatness and glory and splendor. 19
Because
of the high position he gave him, all the peoples and nations and men
of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to
put to death, he 12
put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to
promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.
20
But
when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was
deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21
He
was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived
with the wild donkeys and ate grass like cattle; and his body was
drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most
High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them
anyone he wishes.
22
"But
you his son, D
O Belshazzar, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. 23
Instead,
you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the
goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your
wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods
of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see
or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his
hand your life and all your ways. 24
Therefore
he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25
"This
is the inscription that was written:
MENE,
MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN
E
26
"This
is what these words mean:
Mene
F:
God
has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27
Tekel
G:
You
have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
28
Peres
H:
Your kingdom
is divided and given to the Medes and Persians."
29
Then
at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain
was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest
ruler in the kingdom.
30
That
very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, I
was slain, 31
and
Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two. 13
NEW
TESTAMENT:
2 PETER 2:1 - 22
2
1
But
there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will
be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive
heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing
swift destruction on themselves. 2
Many
will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into
disrepute. 3
In
their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have
made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and
their destruction has not been sleeping.
4
For
if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,
A
putting them into gloomy dungeons B
to be held for judgment; 5
if
he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its
ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and
seven others; 6
if
he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to
ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the
ungodly; 7
and
if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy
lives of lawless men 8
(for
that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in
his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—
9
if
this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials
and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing
their punishment. C
10
This
is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the
sinful nature D
and despise authority.
Bold
and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings;
11
yet
even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not
bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of
the Lord. 12
But
these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like
brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and
destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
13
They
will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea
of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and
blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you. E
14
With
eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the
unstable; they are experts in greed--an accursed brood! 15
They
have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of
Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16
But
he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey--a beast without
speech--who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's
madness.
17
These
men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest
darkness is reserved for them. 18
For
they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful
desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just
escaping from those who live in error. 19
They
promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of
depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20
If
they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they
are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21
It
would have been better for them not to have known the way of
righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on
the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22
Of
them the proverbs are true: "A
dog returns to
14
its
vomit,"
F
and, "A
sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
