For
the director of music. For flutes. A psalm of David.
1
Give
ear to my words, O LORD,
consider
my sighing.
2
Listen
to my cry for help,
my
King and my God,
for
to you I pray.
3
In
the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice;
in
the morning I lay my requests before you
and
wait in expectation.
4
You
are not a God who takes pleasure in evil;
with
you the wicked cannot dwell.
5
The
arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
you
hate all who do wrong.
6
You
destroy those who tell lies;
bloodthirsty
and deceitful men
the
LORD abhors.
7
But
I, by your great mercy,
will
come into your house;
in
reverence will I bow down
toward
your holy temple.
8
Lead
me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because
of my enemies--
make
straight your way before me. 1
9
Not
a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their
heart is filled with destruction.
Their
throat is an open grave;
with
their tongue they speak deceit.
10
Declare
them guilty, O God!
Let
their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish
them for their many sins,
for
they have rebelled against you.
11
But
let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let
them ever sing for joy.
Spread
your protection over them,
that
those who love your name may rejoice in you.
12
For
surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you
surround them with your favor as with a shield. 2
PSALMS:
35
Of
David.
1
Contend,
O LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight
against those who fight against me.
2
Take
up shield and buckler;
arise
and come to my aid.
3
Brandish
spear and javelin A
against
those who pursue me.
Say
to my soul,
"I
am your salvation."
4
May
those who seek my life
be
disgraced and put to shame;
may
those who plot my ruin
be
turned back in dismay.
5
May
they be like chaff before the wind,
with
the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6
may
their path be dark and slippery,
with
the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7
Since
they hid their net for me without cause
and
without cause dug a pit for me,
8
may
ruin overtake them by surprise--
may
the net they hid entangle them,
may
they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9
Then
my soul will rejoice in the LORD
and
delight in his salvation.
10
My
whole being will exclaim,
"Who
is like you, O LORD?
You
rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the
poor and needy from those who rob them." 3
11
Ruthless
witnesses come forward;
they
question me on things I know nothing about.
12
They
repay me evil for good
and
leave my soul forlorn.
13
Yet
when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
and
humbled myself with fasting.
When
my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14
I
went about mourning
as
though for my friend or brother.
I
bowed my head in grief
as
though weeping for my mother.
15
But
when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
attackers
gathered against me when I was unaware.
They
slandered me without ceasing.
16
Like
the ungodly they maliciously mocked B;
they
gnashed their teeth at me.
17
O
Lord, how long will you look on?
Rescue
my life from their ravages,
my
precious life from these lions.
18
I
will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among
throngs of people I will praise you.
19
Let
not those gloat over me
who
are my enemies without cause;
let
not those who hate me without reason
maliciously
wink the eye.
20
They
do not speak peaceably,
but
devise false accusations
against
those who live quietly in the land.
21
They
gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha!
With
our own eyes we have seen it." 4
22
O
LORD, you have seen this; be not silent.
Do
not be far from me, O Lord.
23
Awake,
and rise to my defense!
Contend
for me, my God and Lord.
24
Vindicate
me in your righteousness, O LORD my God;
do
not let them gloat over me.
25
Do
not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!"
or
say, "We have swallowed him up."
26
May
all who gloat over my distress
be
put to shame and confusion;
may
all who exalt themselves over me
be
clothed with shame and disgrace.
27
May
those who delight in my vindication
shout
for joy and gladness;
may
they always say, "The LORD be exalted,
who
delights in the well-being of his servant."
28
My
tongue will speak of your righteousness
and
of your praises all day long. 5
PSALMS:

For
the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.
1
Praise
awaits A
you, O God, in Zion;
to
you our vows will be fulfilled.
2
O
you who hear prayer,
to
you all men will come.
3
When
we were overwhelmed by sins,
you
forgave B
our transgressions.
4
Blessed
are those you choose
and
bring near to live in your courts!
We
are filled with the good things of your house,
of
your holy temple.
5
You
answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
O
God our Savior,
the
hope of all the ends of the earth
and
of the farthest seas,
6
who
formed the mountains by your power,
having
armed yourself with strength,
7
who
stilled the roaring of the seas,
the
roaring of their waves,
and
the turmoil of the nations.
8
Those
living far away fear your wonders;
where
morning dawns and evening fades
you
call forth songs of joy.
9
You
care for the land and water it;
you
enrich it abundantly.
The
streams of God are filled with water
to
provide the people with grain, 6
for
so you have ordained it. C
10
You
drench its furrows
and
level its ridges;
you
soften it with showers
and
bless its crops.
11
You
crown the year with your bounty,
and
your carts overflow with abundance.
12
The
grasslands of the desert overflow;
the
hills are clothed with gladness.
13
The
meadows are covered with flocks
and
the valleys are mantled with grain;
they
shout for joy and sing. 7
PSALMS:
95
1
Come,
let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let
us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2
Let
us come before him with thanksgiving
and
extol him with music and song.
3
For
the LORD is the great God,
the
great King above all gods.
4
In
his hand are the depths of the earth,
and
the mountain peaks belong to him.
5
The
sea is his, for he made it,
and
his hands formed the dry land.
6
Come,
let us bow down in worship,
let
us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
7
for
he is our God
and
we are the people of his pasture,
the
flock under his care.
Today,
if you hear his voice,
8
do
not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, A
as
you did that day at Massah B
in the desert,
9
where
your fathers tested and tried me,
though
they had seen what I did.
10
For
forty years I was angry with that generation;
I
said, "They
are a people whose hearts go astray,
and
they have not known my ways."
11
So
I declared on oath in my anger,
PSALMS:

A
song of ascents.
1
Those
who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which
cannot be shaken but endures forever.
2
As
the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so
the LORD surrounds his people
both
now and forevermore.
3
The
scepter of the wicked will not remain
over
the land allotted to the righteous,
for
then the righteous might use
their
hands to do evil.
4
Do
good, O LORD, to those who are good,
to
those who are upright in heart.
5
But
those who turn to crooked ways
the
LORD will banish with the evildoers.
Peace
be upon Israel. 9
PROVERBS:

5
1
My son, pay attention to my wisdom,
listen
well to my words of insight,
2
that
you may maintain discretion
and
your lips may preserve knowledge.
3
For
the lips of an adulteress drip honey,
and
her speech is smoother than oil;
4
but
in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp
as a double-edged sword.
5
Her
feet go down to death;
her
steps lead straight to the grave. A
6
She
gives no thought to the way of life;
her
paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
7
Now
then, my sons, listen to me;
do
not turn aside from what I say.
8
Keep
to a path far from her,
do
not go near the door of her house,
9
lest
you give your best strength to others
and
your years to one who is cruel,
10
lest
strangers feast on your wealth
and
your toil enrich another man's house.
11
At
the end of your life you will groan,
when
your flesh and body are spent.
12
You
will say, "How I hated discipline!
How
my heart spurned correction!
13
I
would not obey my teachers
or
listen to my instructors.
14
I
have come to the brink of utter ruin
in
the midst of the whole assembly."
15
Drink
water from your own cistern,
running
water from your own well.
16
Should
your springs overflow in the streets,
your
streams of water in the public squares?
never
to be shared with strangers.
18
May
your fountain be blessed,
and
may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19
A
loving doe, a graceful deer--
may
her breasts satisfy you always,
may
you ever be captivated by her love.
20
Why
be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?
Why
embrace the bosom of another man's wife?
21
For
a man's ways are in full view of the LORD,
and
he examines all his paths.
22
The
evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the
cords of his sin hold him fast.
23
He
will die for lack of discipline,
led
astray by his own great folly. 11
OLD
TESTAMENT:
2 SAMUEL 7:1 - 8:18
7
1
After
the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest
from all his enemies around him, 2
he
said to Nathan the prophet, "Here
I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a
tent."
3
Nathan
replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do
it, for the LORD is with you."
4
That
night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
5
"Go
and tell my servant David,
`This
is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell
in?
6
I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up
out of Egypt to this day.
I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.
7
Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any
of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel,
"Why
have you not built me a house of cedar?" '
8
"Now
then, tell my servant David,
`This
is what the LORD Almighty says:
I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler
over my people Israel. 9
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all
your enemies from before you.
Now
I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of
the earth. 10
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them
so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.
Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the
beginning 11
and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders A
over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your
enemies.
12
"`The
LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for
you: 12
When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise
up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body,
and I will establish his kingdom.
13
He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14
I will be his father, and he will be my son.
When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with
floggings inflicted by men.
15
But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from
Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me B;
your
throne will be established forever.'"
17
Nathan
reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
18
Then
King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said:
"Who
am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought
me this far? 19
And
as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have
also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this
your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD?
20
"What
more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign
LORD.
21
For
the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this
great thing and made it known to your servant. 13
22
"How
great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there
is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
23
And
who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth that God went
out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for
himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out
nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed
from Egypt? C
24
You
have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and
you, O LORD, have become their God.
25
"And
now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your
servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26
so
that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, `The LORD
Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David
will be established before you.
27
"O
LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant,
saying, `I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found
courage to offer you this prayer.
28
O
Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have
promised these good things to your servant. 29
Now
be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue
forever in your sight; for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and
with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed
forever."

1
In
the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them,
and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the 14
Philistines.
2
David
also defeated the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground and
measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them
were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the
Moabites became subject to David and brought tribute.
3
Moreover,
David fought Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to
restore his control along the Euphrates River. 4
David
captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers A
and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but a hundred of
the chariot horses.
5
When
the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David
struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6
He
put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans
became subject to him and brought tribute. The LORD gave David
victory wherever he went.
7
David
took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and
brought them to Jerusalem. 8
From
Tebah B
and Berothai, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a
great quantity of bronze.
9
When
Tou C
king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of
Hadadezer, 10
he
sent his son Joram D
to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in
battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought
with him 15
articles of silver and gold and bronze.
11
King
David dedicated these articles to the LORD, as he had done with the
silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12
Edom
E
and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek. He also
dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of
Zobah.
13
And
David became famous after he returned from striking down eighteen
thousand Edomites F
in the Valley of Salt.
14
He
put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to
David. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went.
15
David
reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his
people.
16
Joab
son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was
recorder;
17
Zadok
son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was
secretary;
18
Benaiah
son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's
sons were royal advisers. G

NEW
TESTAMENT:
JOHN 14:15 - 31
15
"If
you love me, you will obey what I command.
16And
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be
with you forever—17
the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither
sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and
will be C
in you. 18
I will not leave you as orphans;
I will come to you.
19
Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.
Because I live, you also will live.
20
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in
me, and I am in you.
21
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.
He
who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and
show myself to him."
22
Then
Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend
to show yourself to us and not to the world?"
23
Jesus
replied, "If
anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.
My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home
with him.
24
He who does not love me will not obey my teaching.
These words you hear are not my own;
they
belong to the Father who sent me.
25
"All
this I have spoken while still with you.
26
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I
have said to you. 27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28
"You
heard me say,
`I
am going away and I am coming back to you.'
If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for
the Father is greater than I.
29
I have told you now before 17it
happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30
I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world
is coming. He has no hold on me,
31
but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly
what my Father has commanded me.

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
