For
the director of music. Of David.
1
In
the LORD I take refuge.
How
then can you say to me:
"Flee
like a bird to your mountain.
2
For
look, the wicked bend their bows;
they
set their arrows against the strings
to
shoot from the shadows
at
the upright in heart.
3
When
the foundations are being destroyed,
what
can the righteous do A?"
4
The
LORD is in his holy temple;
the
LORD is on his heavenly throne.
He
observes the sons of men;
his
eyes examine them.
5
The
LORD examines the righteous,
but
the wicked B
and those who love violence
his
soul hates.
6
On
the wicked he will rain
fiery
coals and burning sulfur;
a
scorching wind will be their lot.
7
For
the LORD is righteous,
he
loves justice;
upright
men will see his face. 1
PSALMS:
41
For
the director of music. A psalm of David.
1
Blessed
is he who has regard for the weak;
the
LORD delivers him in times of trouble.
2
The
LORD will protect him and preserve his life;
he
will bless him in the land
and
not surrender him to the desire of his foes.
3
The
LORD will sustain him on his sickbed
and
restore him from his bed of illness.
4
I
said, "O LORD, have mercy on me;
heal
me, for I have sinned against you."
5
My
enemies say of me in malice,
"When
will he die and his name perish?"
6
Whenever
one comes to see me,
he
speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then
he goes out and spreads it abroad.
7
All
my enemies whisper together against me;
they
imagine the worst for me, saying,
8
"A
vile disease has beset him;
he
will never get up from the place where he lies."
9
Even
my close friend, whom I trusted,
he
who shared my bread,
has
lifted up his heel against me. 2
10
But
you, O LORD, have mercy on me;
raise
me up, that I may repay them.
11
I
know that you are pleased with me,
for
my enemy does not triumph over me.
12
In
my integrity you uphold me
and
set me in your presence forever.
13
Praise
be to the LORD, the God of Israel,
from
everlasting to everlasting.
Amen
and Amen3
PSALMS:
71
1
In
you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
let
me never be put to shame.
2
Rescue
me and deliver me in your righteousness;
turn
your ear to me and save me.
3
Be
my rock of refuge,
to
which I can always go;
give
the command to save me,
for
you are my rock and my fortress.
4
Deliver
me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from
the grasp of evil and cruel men.
5
For
you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD,
my
confidence since my youth.
6
From
birth I have relied on you;
you
brought me forth from my mother's womb.
I
will ever praise you.
7
I
have become like a portent to many,
but
you are my strong refuge.
8
My
mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring
your splendor all day long.
9
Do
not cast me away when I am old;
do
not forsake me when my strength is gone.
10
For
my enemies speak against me;
those
who wait to kill me conspire together.
11
They
say, "God has forsaken him;
pursue
him and seize him,
for
no one will rescue him."
12
Be
not far from me, O God;
come
quickly, O my God, to help me.
13
May
my accusers perish in shame;
may
those who want to harm me
be
covered with scorn and disgrace.4
14
But
as for me, I will always have hope;
I
will praise you more and more.
15
My
mouth will tell of your righteousness,
of
your salvation all day long,
though
I know not its measure.
16
I
will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD;
I
will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.
17
Since
my youth, O God, you have taught me,
and
to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
18
Even
when I am old and gray,
do
not forsake me, O God,
till
I declare your power to the next generation,
your
might to all who are to come.
19
Your
righteousness reaches to the skies, O God,
you
who have done great things.
Who,
O God, is like you?
20
Though
you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you
will restore my life again;
from
the depths of the earth
you
will again bring me up.
21
You
will increase my honor
and
comfort me once again.
22
I
will praise you with the harp
for
your faithfulness, O my God;
I
will sing praise to you with the lyre,
O
Holy One of Israel.
23
My
lips will shout for joy
when
I sing praise to you--
I,
whom you have redeemed.
all
day long,
for
those who wanted to harm me
have
been put to shame and confusion. 6
PSALMS:
101
Of
David. A psalm.
1
I
will sing of your love and justice;
to
you, O LORD, I will sing praise.
2
I
will be careful to lead a blameless life--
when
will you come to me?
I
will walk in my house
with
blameless heart.
3
I
will set before my eyes
no
vile thing.
The
deeds of faithless men I hate;
they
will not cling to me.
4
Men
of perverse heart shall be far from me;
I
will have nothing to do with evil.
5
Whoever
slanders his neighbor in secret,
him
will I put to silence;
whoever
has haughty eyes and a proud heart,
him
will I not endure.
6
My
eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
that
they may dwell with me;
he
whose walk is blameless
will
minister to me.7
7
No
one who practices deceit
will
dwell in my house;
no
one who speaks falsely
will
stand in my presence.
8
Every
morning I will put to silence
all
the wicked in the land;
I
will cut off every evildoer
from
the city of the LORD. 8
PSALMS:
131
A
song of ascents. Of David.
1
My
heart is not proud, O LORD,
my
eyes are not haughty;
I
do not concern myself with great matters
or
things too wonderful for me.
2
But
I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like
a weaned child with its mother,
like
a weaned child is my soul within me.
3
O
Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both
now and forevermore. 9
PROVERBS:
11
11
1
The LORD abhors dishonest scales,
but
accurate weights are his delight.
2
When
pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but
with humility comes wisdom.
3
The
integrity of the upright guides them,
but
the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
4
Wealth
is worthless in the day of wrath,
but
righteousness delivers from death.
5
The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them,
but
the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
6
The
righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but
the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
7
When
a wicked man dies, his hope perishes;
all
he expected from his power comes to nothing.
8
The
righteous man is rescued from trouble,
and
it comes on the wicked instead.
9
With
his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor,
but
through knowledge the righteous escape.
10
When
the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
when
the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11
Through
the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but
by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. 10
12
A
man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor,
but
a man of understanding holds his tongue.
13
A
gossip betrays a confidence,
but
a trustworthy man keeps a secret.
14
For
lack of guidance a nation falls,
but
many advisers make victory sure.
15
He
who puts up security for another will surely suffer,
but
whoever refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe.
16
A
kindhearted woman gains respect,
but
ruthless men gain only wealth.
17
A
kind man benefits himself,
but
a cruel man brings trouble on himself.
18
The
wicked man earns deceptive wages,
but
he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
19
The
truly righteous man attains life,
but
he who pursues evil goes to his death.
20
The
LORD detests men of perverse heart
but
he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
21
Be
sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished,
but
those who are righteous will go free. 11
22
Like
a gold ring in a pig's snout
is
a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
23
The
desire of the righteous ends only in good,
but
the hope of the wicked only in wrath.
24
One
man gives freely, yet gains even more;
another
withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
25
A
generous man will prosper;
he
who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
26
People
curse the man who hoards grain,
but
blessing crowns him who is willing to sell.
27
He
who seeks good finds goodwill,
but
evil comes to him who searches for it.
28
Whoever
trusts in his riches will fall,
but
the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
29
He
who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind,
and
the fool will be servant to the wise.
30
The
fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and
he who wins souls is wise.
31
If
the righteous receive their due on earth,
OLD
TESTAMENT: 2 KINGS 18:13 - 19:37
13
In
the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah's reign, Sennacherib king of
Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
14
So
Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at
Lachish: "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay
whatever you demand of me." The king of Assyria exacted from
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents D
of silver and thirty talents E
of gold.
15
So
Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the temple of the
LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace.
16
At
this time Hezekiah king of Judah stripped off the gold with which he
had covered the doors and doorposts of the temple of the LORD, and
gave it to the king of Assyria.
17
The
king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer and his
field commander with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at
Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of
the Upper Pool, on the road to the Washerman's Field. 18
They
called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the
recorder went out to them.
19
The
field commander said to them, "Tell Hezekiah:
"`This
is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you
basing this confidence of yours? 20
You
say you have strategy and military strength--but you speak only empty
words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me?
21
Look
now, 13
you
are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which
pierces a man's hand and wounds him if he leans on it! Such is
Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 22
And
if you say to me, "We are depending on the LORD our God"--isn't
he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to
Judah and Jerusalem, "You must worship before this altar in
Jerusalem"?
23
"`Come
now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give
you two thousand horses--if you can put riders on them! 24
How
can you repulse one officer of the least of my master's officials,
even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen F?
25
Furthermore,
have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the
LORD? The LORD himself told me to march against this country and
destroy it.'"
26
Then
Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the field
commander, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we
understand it. Don't speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the
people on the wall."
27
But
the commander replied, "Was it only to your master and you that
my master sent me to say these things, and not to the men sitting on
the wall--who, like you, will have to eat their own filth and drink
their own urine?"
28
Then
the commander stood and called out in Hebrew: "Hear the word of
the great king, the king of Assyria! 29
This
is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot
deliver you from my hand.
30
Do
not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the 14
LORD when he says, `The
LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the
hand of the king of Assyria.'
31
"Do
not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make
peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from
his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own cistern, 32
until
I come and take you to a land like your own, a land of grain and new
wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey.
Choose life and not death!
"Do
not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, `The
LORD will deliver us.' 33
Has
the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the
king of Assyria? 34
Where
are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim,
Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 35
Who
of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land
from me? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?"
36
But
the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the
king had commanded, "Do not answer him."
37
Then
Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary
and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their
clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said.
19
1
When
King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth
and went into the temple of the LORD. 2
He
sent Eliakim the 15
palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests,
all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 3
They
told him, "This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of
distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point
of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4
It
may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the field
commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule
the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD
your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still
survives."
5
When
King Hezekiah's officials came to Isaiah, 6
Isaiah
said to them, "Tell your master, `This
is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard--those
words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
7
Listen!
I am going to put such a spirit in him that when he hears a certain
report, he will return to his own country, and there I will have him
cut down with the sword.'"
8
When
the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish,
he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.
9
Now
Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the Cushite A
king of Egypt, was marching out to fight against him. So he again
sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10
"Say
to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive
you when he says, `Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of
Assyria.' 11
Surely
you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the
countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12
Did
the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my 16
forefathers deliver them: the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the
people of Eden who were in Tel Assar?
13
Where
is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of
Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?"
14
Hezekiah
received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up
to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. 15
And
Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: "O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned
between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the
earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16Give
ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; listen to the
words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God.
17
"It
is true, O LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these
nations and their lands. 18
They
have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they
were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men's hands. 19
Now,
O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on
earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God."
20
Then
Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: "This
is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.
21
This
is the word that the LORD has spoken against him:
"`The
Virgin Daughter of Zion
despises
you and mocks you.
The
Daughter of Jerusalem
tosses
her head as you flee.
Against
whom have you raised your voice
and
lifted your eyes in pride?
Against
the Holy One of Israel!
23
By
your messengers
you
have heaped insults on the Lord.
And
you have said,
"With
my many chariots
I
have ascended the heights of the mountains,
the
utmost heights of Lebanon.
I
have cut down its tallest cedars,
the
choicest of its pines.
I
have reached its remotest parts,
the
finest of its forests.
24
I
have dug wells in foreign lands
and
drunk the water there.
With
the soles of my feet
I
have dried up all the streams of Egypt."
25
"`Have
you not heard?
Long
ago I ordained it.
In
days of old I planned it;
now
I have brought it to pass,
that
you have turned fortified cities
into
piles of stone.
26
Their
people, drained of power,
They
are like plants in the field,
like
tender green shoots,
like
grass sprouting on the roof,
scorched
before it grows up.
27
"`But
I know where you stay
and
when you come and go
and
how you rage against me.
28
Because
you rage against me
and
your insolence has reached my ears,
I
will put my hook in your nose
and
my bit in your mouth,
and
I will make you return
by
the way you came.'
29
"This
will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah:
"This
year you will eat what grows by itself,
and
the second year what springs from that.
But
in the third year sow and reap,
plant
vineyards and eat their fruit.
30
Once
more a remnant of the house of Judah
will
take root below and bear fruit above.
31
For
out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,
and
out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.
The
zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. 19
32
"Therefore
this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria:
"He
will not enter this city
or
shoot an arrow here.
He
will not come before it with shield
or
build a siege ramp against it.
33
By
the way that he came he will return;
he
will not enter this city,
declares
the LORD.
34
I
will defend this city and save it,
for
my sake and for the sake of David my servant."
35
That
night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and
eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up
the next morning--there were all the dead bodies! 36
So
Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed there.
37
One
day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his
sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword, and they
escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him
as king. 20
NEW
TESTAMENT:
ACTS 21:1 - 17
21
1
After
we had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed
straight to Cos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to
Patara. 2
We
found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail.
3
After
sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to
Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. 4
Finding
the disciples there, we stayed with them seven days. Through the
Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5
But
when our time was up, we left and continued on our way. All the
disciples and their wives and children accompanied us out of the
city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray. 6
After
saying good-by to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they
returned home.
7
We
continued our voyage from Tyre and landed at Ptolemais, where we
greeted the brothers and stayed with them for a day. 8
Leaving
the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip
the evangelist, one of the Seven. 9
He
had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
10
After
we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down
from Judea. 11
Coming
over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it
and said, "The
Holy Spirit says,
`In
this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and
will hand him over to the Gentiles.'
"
12
When
we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up
to Jerusalem. 13
Then
Paul answered, "Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am
ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name
of the Lord Jesus." 14
When
he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, "The Lord's will
21
be done."
15
After
this, we got ready and went up to Jerusalem. 16
Some
of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and brought us to the
home of Mnason, where we were to stay. He was a man from Cyprus and
one of the early disciples.

John 3:16-21 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, F that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.G 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
